Planes and even airports in general weren't as secure as they are today. For instance, the cockpit of a passenger aircraft these days is fitted with locks on par with those used in a bank vault. And can only be opened from inside the cockpit. It wasn't always like that. Back then, only a curtain separated the pilots from the passengers.
