I know when my community was fighting for a piece of land with a very powerful man. I know we involved the press, and I know how much some of those pressmen suffered just for publishing things that actually happened.

In Nigeria there is something called criminal defamation.

If someone petitions the police that he has been criminally defamed, then the police will investigate.

The police will invite the other party in the course of its investigation.

If the other party refuses to appear, then the police can assume that he is fleeing and can apply to a magistrate for a warrant of arrest.



This is a response to your claim that it is a civil matter and that the police have no business in it.

So if a politician embezzles money, and a journalist exposes it, the politician will just use the police to bundle the journalist?

It is still the duty of the courts to determine if the man is innocent or guilty. The job of the police is to investigate what the writer wrote to see if it is true. And if it is true, then it is not defamation.

If a politician steals money, and a journalist writes about it, it is not defamation. So please let's be mindful of what we support because if this flies, every politician will use the police to torment whoever writes anything about them. They will basically become emperor's.

I still stand on my statement that the police are wrong on this.

In my opinion, I think the article may be true. The journalist had written that she used soldiers earlier. And now she's using the police. But it is still the duty of the courts to judge,and that of the police to investigate, not to kidnap and intimidate.

She should have sued the journalist like she would if the event happened in America where she is based.

You don't destroy your country and then run to another man's country, and still keep destroying your country from there.

Emoney is not particularly a good example for a law abider. So he shouldn't be used as a yardstick for measurement. What he used the police to do was just a show of power and nothing more. Same emoney has a case of fraud hanging on his head and he was sued. Not kidnapped by 10 armed police men in 2 Hilux vans.

You're simply wrong! Police have rights to investigate both civil and criminal matters. The case involved is a defamation suit and proper investigation must be done. If police invites you but you refuse to show then they have every right to arrest you as that is obstruction of justice. Defamation can be criminal if it results in imminent threat or loss to the accuser, it is even more imparative if the defamation was written and distributed online as that can be tied to the new cyber law.

There are over 10 different ways that the police could invoke probable cause in situations like this so it is best to comply. Even if you want to act stubborn, get a good lawyer and let him or her navigate the issue.

This is exactly how impunity gets instituted. If you commit a crime, the police should get an arrest warrant from a judge, after they have proven to the judge that you are a person of interest.

If the police invites you, you have a right to know why you're being invited. And if you don't show up, the police has to go to a judge and obtain an arrest warrant. Arrest warrants are given when it's determined that the case is a crime, and the person who is about to be arrested is a person of interest.

In a civil case such as this, it is only a courts that can determine if this is truly defamation, and not the police.

You're wrong and don't know your right, yet you are the first to tell another person that he's wrong.

If the court has already determined the case to be defamation, then it is now a crime.

And before arresting, in this case, kidnapping the guy, the police should also go to his place, and invite him. The fact that they arrested him at his place in Abuja shows that they know his place and have access to him.

The police you're here defending smartly left out the details of the so called defamation. You're turning the law on its head for something that you're not even sure you won't be a victim of tomorrow.

Like I said, the police has nothing to do with this matter yet. There's no evidence to prove that the police invited him, except what the police wrote up there. And if you're from this country you know that the words of the police are not to be trusted

That aside, it is the job of the court to serve him. This is completely a matter that the courts should handle. The police is not the court or a judge.

The answer to your question what the police should have done is simply "NOTHING"

The police does not settle matters. Only the courts do. And it's the duty of the courts to judge the journalist and determine whether he is guilty or innocent.

Defamation is something the courts settle, and not something ten policemen in 2 Hilux vehicles kidnap people for.

That reverend sister, if it was an American journalist that "defamed" her in the US? Is the police there going to kidnap the journalist with ten men and 2 Hilux vans, or is she not going to press charges?

If the government wants to modify the tax net, it should find a way to do it while increasing value, instead of doing it via rich class and poor class. Cos history has proven that the rich always come out winning, while the poor who supported those taxes because it's targeted at the rich who they hate, end up getting the short end of the stick

You don't eliminate sand totally by sealing the gutters.

You eliminate sand by building cities or estates, building proper drainages, increasing the living standards and income of the people, and yes, sweeping the roads.

Building the cities will prevent people from carrying sand tippers on the road. Because everything has already been built.

Proper drainages will clear the sand that comes in from winds and rains, and also harmattan.

High standard of living will ensure that people can afford these built up places, and also that the builders can adhere to the rules and building codes you will make to govern buildings and transportation of building materials.

Here in Nigeria, land is mapped out, government eats the money meant to build up these places. Then they start selling out lands to people who now build it up. Sand tippers everywhere overfilled and dropping sand all over the roads.
