TravelRe: Canada Spouse Open Work Permit (sowp)timeline by Creativebelle: 3:57am On Sep 06, 2023
Pls how does the closed work permit work? Do I need to get a job offer before applying?

Also if one gets a job offer ..can you apply for open work permit instead of closed work .

Lastly, the visa duration for sowp is it tied to one’s spouse’s study permit duration? Let’s say I have three months to graduation, will my spouse be issued three months visa?

Thank you everyone.

Thank you
Emmafe:
Yes, still at the discretion of the cbsa offer to allow or deny entry.

Pls if one converts from VV to work permit.. can you go in and come into Canada just as you would with a VV.. especially if you are yet to get a job?
Thank you
Emmafe:
Even thou I’ve made my research on flagpole before we even applied for my wife’s study visa, it still didn’t prepared me for the stressed we went through (she followed me for the whole process, I felt for her cry )

I flagpole on the rainbow bridge (3hrs from my place) in Niagara Falls, I was aware you’ve to get there very early bcox Dey answer only 10 ppl daily n it’s not a 24/7 border, flagploing starts 8am.

We got to Niagara on Monday evening, stayed Airbnb n left for the bridge Tuesday morning around 5am. I got to the bridge n was number 18, i heard someone said he came 1am, aaaaah. I felt they’ll answer everyone bcox to me the queue wasn’t that much. I walked to the USA side to flagpole n came back to Canada side to complete the process by 8am. When it was time Naso cbsa officer handled a yellow paper to 10 ppl and told the others to check other borders or check back tomorrow, it was then my eyes cleared.

My wife suggested we should sleep der, that’s d only way we can be guaranteed of an early spot the next day. 10pm we went back to the bridge with two other Nigerians we met. We slept at the bridge from 10pm-8am, d cold was insane, again you can’t leave the bridge, once you enter you’ve to go back to flagpole at usa border. It was a pleasant experience at all, I felt like a refugee 😭😭😭

Finally 8am came n I was the first in line, the whole process took less than 10mins. The officer asked for my wife’s study permit, our marriage certificate and asked my job in naija, he even read the purpose of travel I wrote in my application. My work permit was issue for the duration my wife’s study permit is valid.

I did medical in Nigeria, the officer said that doesn’t count, I will need updated one. So my permit has restrictions, can’t work in strip club, Agriculture occupation n child care/health service field.

If you’re flagpoling in border that opens 24/7, it will be more convenient. You can go anytime n will be attended to. My eyes is still heavy after 3hrs+ sleep cry

Sorry it’s too long n ignore typo abeg.

Anyone resuming Sheridan College in May… let’s connect
TravelRe: Parenting In Canada...lets Connect !!!! by Creativebelle(op): 11:10pm On Mar 17, 2023
Elementary Education is also different ..it’s way different from what we are used to in Nigeria.
They don’t bombard kids here with work..lol they barely do anything sef..interesting!
TravelRe: Parenting In Canada...lets Connect !!!! by Creativebelle(op): 9:55pm On Mar 17, 2023
You right tho but circumstance and threshold differs..
For me,I would perform better with my kids by my side..infact my academics would have suffered if my kids were not with me..
I do not encourage and will never encourage coming alone with kids.
Relocation is not a child’s play..one must have that at the back of their minds. If you must come with more come with plenty money and get ready to pay rents six months or more..once rent is settled..food na small thing..Kids must chop anyhow anyhow..
I know a lot of women who didn’t come with their kids but also in serious dilemma..confused if the kids should join or not! (Mama misses their kids and kids misses mama) what’s next?
It’s tougher for moms who’s husband can’t relocate yet cos not all husbands will pack up and leave especially if you got it good for you in Nigeria..cos na still the naija jobs/business made it possible to pay for four semester fees, rent, food etc for their families in Canada.
I also will never encourage any Husband to leave all behind and move..except you really need the greener pasture then you must move with your families.
So everyone must understand their family dynamics and what works best for them.
Cos truly most women on study permit who travel with their kids do it for the kids and the benefits of having a second passport not necessarily for greener pasture.
Understand what works for your family!
All of us go dey alright last last..
Throwaway12345:
Glad you are settling in. When we tell people to not bring in their kids, they would think you are lieing to them. The biggest hurdle to your initial success is how you land and how easy it is for you to move around and get things done.

You need a house close to school or place of work? Bringing in kids would scuttle this.

You need to do part time work while studying? Your kids would scuttle this.

You would spend *4 of what a regular person should spend with them if you insist on bringing them in. Ordinary 10mins drive destination that you should use a $3 bus you would have to take Uber amd pay $20. Carry trolley and car seat if they are toddlers or below 9. Imagine carrying trolley around in a new country when trying to find your foot and settle in?

Most times it isn't even about money, it is about the inconvenience. With all your money, you might not get daycare placement until 6months down the line. Even if you get it might be tens of kilometers away. And remember you can't buy a car without a license so you have to depend on Public transportation pending when you sort licensing. So how do you drop the kids and pick them up from daycare everyday? $20 uber to go drop before you find your way to school another $20 to take them back home.

How do you attend classes or go to work with a child? You lock them indoors? I don't even need to talk about Landlords and seeing you as the only parent who is on a student visa with a child. It is crazy to think anyone would do such. Why would you have a kid with you while studying without a partner to take of the kid? That's a red flag to them already because their understanding is you can't earn money to pay rent and they can't evict you easily. So you would toil to even get a landlord to agree to renting to you and might get ridiculous terms like paying 12months rent upfront or even more .

So please Nigerians should listen especially the female folks. Listen to people when they tell you the realities of here. Stop daydreaming and believing you wield some stupid powers or your God is different and has a Miracle in store somewhere to navigate you through bringing kids especially toddlers when coming over. You won't die if you leave them behind no matter how tough it is. Get over it and do the right thing for the kid. If you are trying to provide a better future for the kid, you need to be able to do that from a point of strength.

Of what use is the saner clime when you can't even work, get into debt paying $1000 per month day care fees , can't feed the kid properly, can't concentrate in class because of stress and pressure, have to pay more for everything because you choose to not follow basic logical reasoning? Studying is hard enough, ask even singke people here how they want to use assignments and coursework to kill them . Let alone when you now have to tend to kids.

Sorry for the strong words. But it annoys the hell out that people keep doing this even with all the advice given and posts shared. Stay back in Nigeria if you know your spouse isn't following you to come help with the child responsibiliies or you drop the kid and come alone. Don't even dare try thinking about coming alone with kids.

Yes majority are Indians.. you may have 50 Indians and just two Nigerians.. max 5 Nigerians.. in some cases could be only you sef..
skentelelady:
Why only Nigetians? Are the remaining students from the same country so it is easy for them to mix well?
I don't see age and natuonality as issue in mingling with people
TravelRe: Parenting In Canada...lets Connect !!!! by Creativebelle(op): 9:44pm On Mar 17, 2023
Doing perfectly well..not gonna work until I am done with school..so now it’s just schooling and my kids..hubby arrived to stay one month and go back..nothing on planet earth will stop me from travelling with my kids..what works for A may not work for B..I do not encourage it either..
If you coming, come big…Money money money ..come with plenty money ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
jasperonyx:
thank God for you, it's not easy ooo, when you wrote you will be coming with your kids, I wondered how you will manage, because the tales I hear eeh.
Also, I can understand about the age stuff.
You might be the only Nigerian, in midst of very younger people, haha, won't be easy ko.
TravelRe: Parenting In Canada...lets Connect !!!! by Creativebelle(op): 4:35pm On Feb 15, 2023
Has nothing to with tribe or African anything… just saying mingling comes easy when you are in the same age range esp when chances are “ you could be the only Nigerian in your class.. these two scenarios are not easy for any Nigerian

Join WhatsApp groups…they help relieve stress and you may make friends (

There are lots of WhatsApp groups for new immigrants ,students ,Moms for different regions.

Nigerian groups I mean!
TravelRe: Parenting In Canada...lets Connect !!!! by Creativebelle(op): 5:19am On Feb 15, 2023
For international student ,If you find your program tough or uninteresting…don’t waste time..change program immediately and pay attention to deadline for school fees refund

Else, you will forfeit your fees..

You don’t wanna add program stress to your stress!

Change program as soon as you land! Do not waste time!

These courses are tough and schooling here is a different ball game entirely..it’s hella stressful.

One surprising observation: Nigerians are sparsely populated in the Ontario province..one will wonder where all the people getting approvals are heading to….maybe other provinces…lol

Forget the hype! There are not a lot of us in the GTA/Toronto/Peel region

Chances are “you may be the only Nigerian in your class”

Try your best to make friends and mingle…it’s not gonna be easy but you can try!
TravelRe: Parenting In Canada...lets Connect !!!! by Creativebelle(op): 5:12am On Feb 15, 2023
Everything is finally aligning…

Wasn’t easy but we pushing…

Got an apartment…getting an accommodation is the most important..it’s the link to every other thing..

You need address for everything..

Kids finally started school and day care..

Coming alone with kids should not be encouraged…

Come alone or come with your spouse..

Ask question ( regardless of what the response may be)

Introvert may find it tough sha..

One more thing for applicant who are in their 40s or 50s…schooling may not be easy..your classmates may be younger and mingling may not be easy..

Get ready !

LANDING GIST!!!

So left Nigeria on the 25th December (Xmas day) (memorable day..lol)Landed in Toronto on the 26th.

Check in was stressful cos I had a lot to carry(no regrets tho) helps save cost while you navigate being a first timer in a Canada.

Check in Toronto was a breeze..lots of people arriving that day..baggage claim was stressful tho cos of the influx of people trying to get their luggage(s).

Officers just asked for my Study permit and a consent letter from dad(since he didn’t travel with us). I actually had the letter for Nigeria immigration (little did I know Canada immigration will ask ). Noticed these officers ask for things randomly..they don’t ask travelers for same requirements.

Booked a regular taxi to our hotel cos the Uber we booked won’t carry my two year old without a car seat..(haven’t had car seat issue since then) that particular Uber was just overly dramatic..tho it’s essential to have a car seat and a stroller still…

Hotel check in was easy..enjoyed my hotel and wished I would stay all through till I get an apartment..

Unfortunately,I spent just five days and moved to an Airbnb..currently at the Airbnb (nice apartment..fully furnished and feels like home.

Haven’t done anything major as it’s not an easy task getting an apartment cos of Choice, budget,Proximity to my school cos of the kids and most importantly requirements. The requirements from home owners/landlords are not what immigrants would have but of course, there are alternatives for this requirements like paying upfront or getting a guarantor (someone who lives in that province and meets all requirements to stand as a guarantor.

House search is still on…hopefully,I seal one soon..there are lots of house agents one can work with (Nigerians).

Popular places to search for houses online are kijiji,Facebook market place (beware of scam tho)

Getting an apartment is the key to other things like schooling and daycare for the kids..without getting a permanent apartment enrolling your kids in school and daycares may be impossible.

I rest my gist until I am fully settled…

In all, The country is cool..may have a rough start cos of course,it’s relocation (relocation is huge)

In all..it’s a 10/10 place to be..

Will be back soon for more gist…

PS: Bring plenty money when coming ooo..lol

Don’t say I didn’t tell you.. wink

Hey,
It’s specific to mums unfortunately. As for newborn’s passport, when we did ours in April (biometrics), we followed the instructions on the website. They didn’t ask for NIN and we got the passport in August. I don’t know if things have changed though.
Just Google Nigerian high commission Canada passport for newborn.
