Culture / Lagos’ Creative Brilliance Is Highlighted In Google’s Eko For Show by creatorcurator: 12:06pm On May 11, 2021

Known fondly as the Center of Excellence by most indigenes, it is a well-known fact that Eko – Lagos state – is the hub for art and culture. It seems that Google knows this as the internet powerhouse highlights the city’s creative brilliance in its Arts and Culture section.

To pique your interest, here are some highlights from the collaborative project.

Explore the Capital of Cool: City Tour with Folorunsho Coker

Makoko Floating City / THE GUARDIAN

The Director-General of Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Folorunsho Coker, highlights seven interesting places to visit in Lagos. From the floating city of Makoko to the Epe fish market, these spots all show the diverse cultural life of Lagos.

Eko ni Wa / We are Lagosian

Lola Shoneyin

This is probably one of my favorite sections from the Eko for Show project. Here, ten female authors [Jumoke Verissimo, Unoma Azuah, Lola Shoneyin, Sefi Atta, Precious Arinze, Chika Unigwe, Molara Wood, Sarah Ladipo Manyika, Ope Adedeji, and Ukamaka Olisakwe] share their personal Lagos story.

Rocking Afrobeat

Reekado Banks

The project also has a Q&A session with some of Lagos’ big-name Afrobeat stars. Here, Terra Kulture’s Bolanle Austin-Peters interviews the stars on their creative journey and goals. Some of the artists she sits down with include Skepta, Teni, and Kizz Daniel.

Pick Your Lagos: Eat the Food
All my foodies can agree that Nigerian food is the best…argue with your papa. This section of the project highlights all the unique, beautiful flavors and cuisine Lagos has to offer. It includes markets to visit as well as recipes to try.

These highlights are just the tip of the iceberg. Eko for Show has over 8000 photographs, three street view experiences, and 175 videos.

Music/Radio / Release Date For Dmx’s Posthumous Album, Exodus Announced by creatorcurator: 12:44am On May 11, 2021
DMX will always be remembered as one of greatest rappers to ever pick up a microphone. Just last month, he tragically passed away at 50 and since then, numerous fans and fellow rappers have issued touching tributes to the late star. At the time of his death, X was in the process of making a new album. However, the album will now be released posthumously as those closest to the late Ruff Ryder’s leader have continued the work, in an effort to preserve the integrity of the project.

Now, X’s album will be released later this month on the 28th of May. The project is called Exodus and will be entirely executive produced by the likes of Swizz Beatz, who spoke about the new project in a press release. “My brother X was one of the most pure and rare souls I’ve ever met. He lived his life dedicated to his family and music. Most of all, he was generous with his giving and loved his fans beyond measure,” Swizz said.

This album, X couldn’t wait for his fans all around the world to hear and show just how much he valued each and every single person that has supported him unconditionally.” The producer also shared the cover art of the project on Instagram.

This is phenomenal news for all Hip-Hop fans out there, especially X’s, and we have no doubt that Swizz Beatz put in his very best into the album. Posthumous releases are always a sensitive topic, but with X, it’s clear that those who were closest to him are well involved. Stay tuned.

Celebrities / Burna Boy Was Not Paid To Attend Rivers State Reception - Burna Boy's Mother by creatorcurator: 12:18am On May 11, 2021

Bose Ogulu, mother of Nigerian musician Burna Boy, has debunked claims that her son received money to attend a reception with Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, back in March.

In a recent interview with popular TV host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Bose said Burna was rather honoured because of what he achieved and it would have been disrespectful to turn down such honour from his place of origin. Recall that Burna Boy was hosted by Wike after his success at the 63rd Grammy Awards.

He became the first solo act in Nigeria to win a Grammy award when he beat Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Tinariwen to the Best Global Music Album award. According to unconfirmed reports, the 29-year-old was reportedly gifted a plot of land as well as funds to develop the land by Wike.

Nigerians did not disappoint, slating the African Giant mastermind for accommodating such gestures from a politician, made worse by the ongoing political crises in the Nation. However, it’s a good thing his mother, and part-time manager, Bose Ogulu is clearing the air on the incident.

Ogulu is a daughter of the music critic Benson Idonije, who was the manager of Fela Kuti, the late Afrobeat legend. With a Bachelor of Arts in foreign languages and a Masters of Arts in translation from the University of Port Harcourt, she had a successful career as a translator for the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce. She is the founder of Spaceship Collective, the holding company to Spaceship Records and Spaceship Publishing.

Music/Radio / The Prodigal By Mr P – Album Review by creatorcurator: 7:34pm On Apr 08, 2021

Singer, producer, Peter Okoye, aka Mr P, has finally released his debut solo album since he parted ways with his twin brother, Paul Okoye, aka Rude Boy.

The 39-year-old kicked off his solo career with singles like ‘Ebeano’, ‘Karma’, ‘My Way’, and ‘One More Night’ where he featured Niniola.

Reminiscing on when I first listened to Mr P sing alongside his brother Rude Boy when the pair was P- Square, you could argue there was hardly any better duo in the industry- no group had ever complemented each other that well since I knew Nigerian music.

They constantly gave us that R Kelly and Usher; ‘Same Girl’ experience and everyone loved them.

Peter nor Paul may not have been prolific lyricists like Usher and R Kelly but, you cannot dispute the impact they had on Nigerian music.

Their ‘Game Over’ album will remain one of the most iconic albums to ever be straight out of Naija. However, times have passed now, and boys have become men, or so they say.

For all the reasons we loved Peter and Paul Okoye, if one thing is certain since their split, it is that both have failed to reach those heights they once reached as P-Square.

I understand not too many terrific duos or bands separate and go on to enjoy individual commercial success but, I expect their music to mature.

That said, The Prodigal consists of 16 tracks, with hit singles such as ‘Follow My Lead’ and ‘Just Like That’ released earlier to create hype for the project.

The album features the likes of Simi, Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, American R&B star Tamar Braxton to mention but a few.

Asides sounding like it was sampled off one of P-Square’s project in ‘Invasion’, ‘Odo’, the opening song of the album welcomes you nicely to the experience with its blend of contemporary RNB and Afro Pop with nice vocals to go. I know lyrics have never been Peter’s strength but, this one takes the length of a rap song. Perhaps he (Mr P) was enjoying the sound in this one a tad too much and I do not blame him. You can’t not miss P-Square, even if you’re them.

A fusion of Afrobeat, Pop, and R&B, ‘Paloma’ is the second track in the album and features upcoming artist, Singah. The vocals were enjoyable, Singah’s especially, but the sound and lyrics again, fail to inspire.

I however liked ‘I DO’, the duet with Tiwa Savage. Savage’s vocals were charming and soulful- both artists complemented each other well and the rhythm was fresh and dynamic enough to have your mind invested in the song.

However, is it only me, or did ‘Boyfriend’ have the feel of a sequel to ‘Paloma’? One major problem with this album is that all the songs sound alike, save for a few standouts.

‘Just Like That’, was released earlier as one of the lead singles in the album. The Hip Hop/dancehall banger features Congolese-Swedish musician, Mohombi, and while it stands out from the rest of the songs, all I could remember while playing this one was a P-Square’s ‘Busy Body’ remix featuring Weird MC.

Again, ‘I Love You’ features three power houses: Simi, Teni, and Tamar Braxton. Surely, you’d expect more from such a star-studded song but, while it doesn’t overly disappoint, Mr P might have a difficult time convincing listeners he’s the genuine owner of the song, Honestly.

The singer and songwriter must be a huge fan of the TV show ‘Paloma and Diego’ to have referenced them twice in separate songs, maybe it was Singah. I can’t quite differentiate the message from both songs anyway.

‘Follow My Lead’ features Wande Coal and arguably presents us with the most standout sound and refrain to chant. It had Wande Coal written all over it though and might just prove the best song in the album. Wande never disappoints.

For a 16-track album, there aren’t many talking points. Maybe this is because of the consistently similar sound, lyrics, and delivery. We have a lot of things on our plates right now, and Mr P just somehow managed to miss all of that in favour of his consistent love themed lyrics. I find it bold and daring.

It seems Mr P is really invested in his old ways and hasn’t really evolved after several years of working solo.

Certainly, late GenY kids- people born in the 80’s and 90’s, constitutes the majority of his fanbase. I do wonder how this project might appeal to them given that we have different lenses through which we see the world now, and the songs in ‘The Prodigal’ are invariably consistent with P-Squares’ old ideas of RNB and love songs. It may just be the proverbial phrase “if something works for you, why change it?” at play here.

I reckon this album would be the one to reaffirm his rank and value in the industry as one of the pioneers of the Nigerian music that we’ve come to know and enjoy today and help him reconnect with fans, this time, as a solo artist.

Nevertheless, it just feels like the 39-year-old is driving us down the path of regurgitation. If this was supposed to solidify his stance as a solo artist and make us look beyond his P-Square days, ‘The Prodigal’ has only largely succeeded in making it more difficult to avoid pondering if breaking up P-Square and setting off on this solo-adventure was the right idea.

Make no mistake, diehard fans will still enjoy this. And we hope to see more from Mr P in the future.

Phones / Re: Why Should I Buy An iPhone? by creatorcurator: 11:14am On Mar 11, 2021
hoilakes:
Why do i need to break a bank before i use a phone, mostly the basic function of a mobile phone is to communicate, STORE... this iphone of a thing its even stressful for me... now in Nigeria either the phone is refurbished or new all these guys want to use it to oppress not mainly for the basic purpose again...

Thanks to other Phone brands like TECNO, Infinix, and the likes, the oppression would have been much to an unexplainable extent... With as moderate as 70k to 120k you will see better tecno with great features that can compete wella...

All is well

I get your point. But, truth is, people will always do with anything what they choose or want to with it. That doesn't make it the ideal or supposed use for it. I actually did not intend to undermine any phone brand, it's just comparing how durable each one and how they hold up and retain value over time.
Health / COVID-19: When Can I Get The Vaccine In Nigeria? by creatorcurator: 2:19pm On Mar 10, 2021
The first batch of the Astrazeneca-Oxford vaccines have finally arrived Nigeria. Manufactured in Mumbai, India, only about 4 million doses were shipped, with more set to arrive in the coming days. But if you’ve been cracking your head concerning how the vaccines are going to be distributed, given that we are well over 190 million people, here are key details you should know.

5th March: Official programme launch; frontline health workers vaccination begins.
6th March: National leaders, including the president gets vaccinated.

Therefore, If you have loved ones who fall into this age bracket, ensure that they register with the health center near them, and the date and venue for the vaccination would be communicated in due course.

People with Chronic Medical Conditions, such as Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, etc.

These conditions often have no cure and are rather managed for a long time, that is why they are can also be referred to as underlying medical conditions. When a person with one or more of these conditions is infected with COVID-19, it is very easy for them to develop pneumonia, require hospitalization, and sometimes, intensive care. Those who fall into this category are advised to visit their nearest health center for more information.

After majority of these people have been vaccinated, adults aged 18 and above can now get theirs, as more shipments arrive. All they have to do is register and comply with the appropriate authorities.

Phones / Why Should I Buy An iPhone? by creatorcurator: 2:10pm On Mar 10, 2021
Maybe you used to be a Tecno guy back in the 2010’s, or even the budget smartphone guy from flagship companies like Samsung, Sony, Motorola, etc. However, you make more bucks now and your budget for gadgets like smartphones, smart-gears, and laptops have gone up but, you still have a problem deciding on which flagship to buy.

I can tell you it’s not an easy decision to make, sometimes, even for experts like myself. Many die-hard android people may eventually settle for Samsung, yes, Samsung still makes the best android phones asides the Google pixel. For some other people, it’s a matter of “Priceeconomics.” These people that worry about prices and values are most likely to make the best decisions on which smartphone to invest in.
Why you should view buying smartphones as investments

The thing with technology is that there’s a steady transition or transformation; and with many companies forming part of the Android coalition, there’s always going to be price competition and a quicker devaluation of products. For instance, a Samsung flagship device with a Snapdragon 850 processor may find its match in Huawei device that’s probably going for a lesser price. The caveat is that if the Samsung device was released and purchased first, its resale value is likely to drop with the release of each equivalent device.

But then there is the Apple iPhone series, very much their own competition, especially among die-hard iPhone users. In fact, my belief is that android phones sell more units than iPhones because of price, of course, most iPhones are flagship devices, built to compete with the best phones in the market as at the time of their release. With longer software support, tailored software-hardware compatibility, the resale value of an iPhone rarely budges.
Why is this so?

For instance, the iPhone 7, released in September of 2016 with starting price at N168,000 (worst USD-NGN rates in 2016) for the 32gig version, presently sells at N75,000. That’s a 44% drop in value after 5 years. Although I didn’t take the present USD-Naira rates into consideration, there is no need when you remember that Samsung galaxy S7 was released in the same year, although in February and today goes for an average resale value of N40,000. Note that the galaxy S7 started at around N130,000 and that is about a 70% drop in value after 5 years.

Asides software support, premium components, and feel, perhaps other things like the iPhone being made by “Apple” makes its value die hard. And that’s why many Nigerians still flaunt their iPhone 6 after about 6 years of release. It would be quite interesting to know what your opinions or decisions would be after reading this. Would you rather spend huge money on that flagship android device which sells at about the same rate as its iPhone equivalent and lose money on the long run? Or would you rather buy a flagship apple device feel more financially secure when upgrading your device? Tell us in the comment section.
