If the police ask you to write a statement, which they normally do when they stop you on the road and take you to their station or when they invite you to their station, you should know how to write a good statement that will not implicate you. First, whether you write a statement as a witness or as a suspect, you must understand that your statement is very likely going to be used against you either in court or for the purpose of blackmail by some officers (not all). Therefore, take your statement writing as a serious matter. Remember that you have right to refuse to write a statement until your lawyer is present. But this normally leads to argument and hostile reactions from the police, and it may likely be a pretext for them not releasing you immediately. There are no hard and fast rules as to the content of a statement. It is supposed to be what you know in relation to an incident or the reason for you being brought to the station. Since the statement is not just a general view on anything you like, it is important that you know the reason for which you have been brought to the station. For those who have been suspected of committing an offense, make sure that before you start writing a statement, you ask the officer the offense for which you have been brought to the station. If he tells you that there is no offense, that they just want you to tell them all you know, you can politely say: No, Sir. The police force is meant to enforce the criminal law. Therefore, the police would not have any justification to bring you to the station except if they suspect that an offense has been committed somewhere by somebody - either you or someone else. And you need to know the offense and the person suspected before you could write your statement. Also, if you were arrested or invited as a result of a petition written against you, you must demand to read carefully that petition before you start giving your statement. When you start your statement, make sure you explain in your statement the reason for which you have been asked to make your statement. For instance, you can say something like: "I was stopped while driving my vehicle with registration number xxxxx on ________ street in _______ city. After showing my papers to officer xxxxxxx, I was taken to the police station and informed that my car was suspected of being stolen car" Then you make your statement. You will see that the police will not like this. But you should be able to state the summary of the circumstances that led to you having to make a statement in the station. I will say more about writing statements at police stations. For now, just get the idea that you should explain why you are making a statement and the offenses you were told you were suspected of. You should state that in your statement before you begin to write other things POST SCRIPT: The reason you have to state in your statement the reason for making a statement is obvious. Your statement when read by a third party can only make sense in the context of the matter that prompted the statement. So, if you didn't state the matter to which your statement relates, the police may change the matter down the line. Initially, you thought you were arrested because of stolen vehicle, but the police later charged it to kidnapping. If a judge is reading your statement in a kidnapping case, he will think you were evading the issues. He will think you were dodging the matter that you don't want to answer the question. And he will form a negative opinion of you based on your presumably inconclusive and evasive statement . So be careful and be wise (C) Lady Kuku Ikpidungise Posted as copied! |

Ghana’s President Breaks Record, Appoints 110 Ministers LAGOS MARCH 19TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has set a record a least in his country for appointing 110 ministers. Fifty-six of them are full ministers, while 50 are deputy ministers, with the remaining four ministers of state. In contrast Nigeria has 35 ministers. Britain has a total of 120 ministers for a population of about 65 million. Akufo-Addo, who was elected last December, promising to cut expenditure and fight corruption, said the appointments were necessary. But critics believed that it was an overdo, describing the size of government as “elephant” for a country the size of Ghana. Truly, the government size is a record for Ghana. It is the largest government since the country, of about 27 million inhabitants, adopted a democratic constitution in 1992. “I’m aware that people are concerned about what they see as maybe the cost of this large government,” Akufo-Addo admitted in an interview on national television. “It is a necessary investment to make for the rapid transformation of this country,” he said and added that ministers “are coming to work, it is not going to be a holiday”. But the opposition party is less convinced about the benefit of having such a big government. “We’re confronted with an elephant size of government and Akufo-Addo has proven that he’s a politician rather than a president,” said Haruna Iddrisu, leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress in Parliament. Following from the new wave of ministerial intake, the agriculture ministry now boasts a minister, a minister of state and three deputies. Four other ministries also have three deputies and a minister. Parliamentary sources told Reuters top government appointees receive monthly salaries of about $4,000 (£3,326) in addition to at least two cars, free fuel, a house, free utilities and personal protection. “It’s a case of jobs for the boys,” said politics lecturer, Geoffrey Molu, whose comment was echoed on social media and by commentators on Ghana’s radio and TV channels. Government spokesman, Nana Akomea, said criticism would stop if the government delivers on its ambitious agenda. . independent.co.uk. copy: lalasticlala |

Herdsmen, dressed in police uniform, armed with AK-47 rifles and other dangerous weapons, engaged a team of policemen in a gun battle, yesterday, in Delta State, leaving a number of police officers, including an Area Commander, injured, while some are missing. However, Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, who spoke to Vanguard on phone yesterday evening, said: “There was no injury. “What happened was that the policemen were fatigued. They entered the terrain they were not used to and some of them collapsed out of fatigue.” He said none was injured, but admitted that the Area Commander, who led the team and one other person were exhausted. Vanguard learned that the police team, including men of the Dragon, Quick Response Squad , QRS and Ughelli Area Command patrol team, led by the Area Commander, Ughelli, had stormed Orhorho community and surroundings in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state. The move was due to incessant reports of rape and attacks on villagers by herdsmen, who were taking cover in the bush. But as soon as the policemen arrived, the herdsmen opened fire. The police officers, numbering over 60, it was gathered, had stormed the community to enforce an ultimatum issued the herdsmen to leave. Though details of the incident were still sketchy at press time, sources said the head of the police team was among the wounded in the gun battle. A source, who craved anonymity, said police officers were ambushed by the herdsmen, who he said opened fire on them, as they were approaching the community. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/herdsmen-police-uniform-clash-police-delta-area-commander-injured/ |

THE CORPSE WERE BROUGHT INTO THE AREA COMMANDERS OFFICE THIS EVENING IN UGHELLI BEFORE THEY WERE SUBSEQUENTLY TRANSFERRED TO THE MORTUARY. THE BODIES WERE SERIOUSLY MUTILATED WITH THE HEAD CHOPPED OFF. THE DEATH OF THE TWO GALLANT OFFICERS IS INDEED A BIG BLOW TO THE NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE. |

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has apologized to Urhobo monarchs for an incident that occurred during Vice President Yemi Osinabajo’s visit to the state. He tendered the apology during the celebration of the 100th birthday anniversary of HRM Ovie Richard Ogbon, the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli south. The governor said: “I use this occasion to apologise once again to our traditional rulers for what happened during the visit of the vice president to our state, it was most unfortunate that it happened, no matter what, forgive the state and the nation. “This is a day of joy in Delta state and in our country, Nigeria; I congratulate all of you for this special blessing which can only come from God – for a king who has a lot of burden to carry to live up to a hundred years is very rare to see. “I believe that every day of your (the celebrant) life, you will continue to press on for the ultimate crown, you must work consistently to ensure that you get the crown of glory on the last day; you are a role model to a lot people, including me. |
