Jobs/VacanciesGet Social! 5 Simple Social Media Tactics That Lead To A Job by CVWizards(op): 6:26am On Nov 10, 2014
Do you stay up till all hours of the night, posting your CV and responding to ads on job boards? Is this the essence of your job hunt? If so, you are far from alone.

If you haven't been successful using this tactic, there is a good reason: Companies report that while 42 percent of their applicants come via job boards, only 14 percent of the people they hire come from this source. These numbers, and others in this article, were first revealed in Jobvite's 2013 Social Recruiting Survey of more than 1,600 recruiters and human resources professionals.

Across all industries, there is a whopping 94 percent adoption of social recruiting. These days, recruiting and hiring are all about networking, both in-person and online. It is hard to overstate the importance of your online presence as key to a successful job search.

As you might expect, 94 percent of recruiters use LinkedIn and 65 percent use Facebook. Lest you focus your energies only on the big two, bear in mind that more than half of recruiters and HR staffing specialists are using Twitter. And Jobvite identifies other "specialized, localized and up-and-coming social networks" that recruiters utilize to source talent: Instagram, Vimeo, GitHub, Stack Overflow, XING, Yammer and Pinterest.

Understand what sites are used for what purposes. Companies use different websites differently. For example, Twitter is great for a company showcasing itself. It is easy and free to send out tweets announcing open positions in an effort to gain corporate visibility and draw you to a company's website.

Facebook's company pages are used to create a following, to put out much more information about the values, products and services of a company. This way, it builds its own employer brand and reputation. More than half of all companies utilize Facebook as a means of bolstering their own employee referral programs where they reward current employees for bringing to their attention others who are successfully recruited to come on board.

Tip: Look at what companies are saying about themselves on Twitter and Facebook. Follow them, and begin to interact with them to gain your own credibility. Build relationships, followers and friends as a means of networking yourself inside a company.

Tip: Ignore LinkedIn at your own peril. This website does it all. Recruiters use it to search for candidates, contact them, keep tabs on people and vet them as well as posting jobs. Make certain that your profile is complete and up-to-date, join and become seen in LinkedIn's groups, and look for posted opportunities both in the main "Jobs" tab as well as those different jobs posted within the myriad of LinkedIn's groups accessible only to group members.

Understand what recruiters look for on social networks. At least for now, résumés remain a crucial explanation of your history and the value you offer to your next employer. But they don't generally speak to today's hiring buzzword: fit. That is why 93 percent of recruiters indicate that they are likely to look at a candidate's social profile, and more than 40 percent of recruiters have reconsidered a candidate (either positively or negatively) based on what they find.

Those charged to build strong pools of candidates know that they will find out much more about your personality, attitudes and general ability to communicate effectively by what you post. Moreover, they will be able to gauge your expertise and willingness to share it.

Tip: Create your own strategy for a multi-pronged social media presentation of your personal brand and expertise. Here are some of the "musts" that will go into this strategy:

1. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is accurate and complete with a great close-up headshot, skills, highlighted accomplishments at each of your current and previous positions and more.

2. Contribute your knowledge to become known as an expert in your field. Participate in LinkedIn's groups that deal with your skill sets, roles and industries. Then, make sure to branch out to some of the smaller niche social media sites like Stack Overflow (in technical fields) or others that are relevant to your own situation.

3. Follow companies and interact with their employees on Twitter.

4. By far, the single thing that you can do to generate a positive impression about yourself is post about your volunteer activities and nonreligious charitable donations. Talk about the causes you support, and show yourself to be a giving person.

5. Clean up your act. More than likely, you will alienate recruiters if they find you making any reference to involvement with illegal drugs, posting or tweeting anything of a sexual nature, using profanity, making spelling or grammatical errors or if you are pictured consuming alcohol.

When you take the time to embrace social media, you will become better known, liked, valued and trusted. And when this happens, you'll revel in your reputation.

Jobs/Vacancies5 Ways To Leverage Your December Job Hunt by CVWizards(op): 4:26am On Nov 09, 2014
While you might believe that the last couple weeks of the year are fallow, this season offers unique opportunities for job hunters. Here are some end-of-the-year tips you can implement now:

1. Keep your online network warm. Take advantage of the season to initiate communications with the people in your network. Review your first degree LinkedIn connections and reach out to them.

Make a list of all the people who helped you in one way or another in the last year, even by doing something small. Write a short note and tell them that you've been thinking about them, you're appreciative of their friendship and/or assistance, and you wish them a Happy New Year. Don't ask anything from them, but remind them that they should not hesitate to call on you if you can somehow assist them in the new year.

Use LinkedIn's Signal function (found in the News tab) to see which companies have hired people in your network, and also just scroll through your list of first degree connections in the Contacts tab to see who has been hired or promoted within the last few months. Make a point to reach out to these people, one at a time. Congratulate them (again) on their career progress, and extend your wishes for a productive and wonderful 2015. You might ask to speak with them soon just to "check in" and see how things are working out in their new role/job. When you do, take that opportunity first to listen to them and only then share what you have been up to without specifically asking them to help you in your job hunt. And once again, remind them that you hope to be able to help them and that they shouldn't hesitate to reach out to you.

2. Use holiday parties to network. It is easy to stay out of sight, not wanting to mingle and answer the question: "Are you still unemployed?" However, it is especially important to get out of the house and keep your face in front of family, peers, etc. You should try to keep the conversation focused on them rather than on yourself, and use information you gain about their work and activities as the basis for follow up conversations.

3. Use this time to self reflect. No doubt there are some quiet moments during this "down" time of the year. Go off by yourself somewhere, with a pad and pen. Write down all the things that you have been doing to get a job, to network with people, to master social media, and so forth. Figure out what parts of the job hunt you are really good at, and which parts need improvement. When you can identify what you need to do to become a more effective job hunter, you can then begin to create a plan of action. How will you go about improving your resume, enhancing your networking skills, or preparing for job interviews? What resources do you need, and how can you get them?

4. Figure out what you don't know and how you can learn it. Sometimes it is clear that you need to take an extra course or two, gain an additional certification or credential, or otherwise research a new position, company, or field of expertise. Cassi Fields, a Ph.D. psychologist who owns and runs Limited Exposure Theory Corporation in Washington, D.C. explains: "Oftentimes, job and promotion seekers have little knowledge of what the desired position entails."

Fields suggests that whether you're looking for a new job or to gain a promotion, you should seek to become a "pro-active protégée." You can do this by seeking out a mentor and asking people to teach you, and to give you the information that you will need to get ahead.

5. Keep your own spirits up. While this time of year should be filled with seasonal joy, it's all the more difficult for those feeling joyless. If you've had a long period of unemployment, are frustrated with your job hunt progress, or see your financial resources dwindling, it is easy to become down and depressed. Even in these circumstances, you retain control over certain things, and when you exercise that control you'll begin to feel better about yourself and your situation. People don't hire people they perceive to be depressed, overly anxious, or needy. They hire people who are optimistic and have a "can do" attitude.

Hiring managers don't—and shouldn't—see themselves as the answer to your problems. Instead, you must be the answer to theirs. Bearing all this in mind, remember the value of the adage, "Fake it till you make it." Use this time of year to put some spark back into your smile and spring into your step. Jettison unsuccessful routines, meet new people, and remember that with the new year comes new possibilities.

"I've sent my résumé to over 150 companies but I'm not getting any bites," complained a job hunter. "How many more jobs should I apply to in order to generate some interest?"

Some people treat job hunting as a numbers game. They hope that by applying to enough companies, sooner or later they will find success. While there is no one magic number of how many places a job searcher need apply, you shouldn't for a moment believe that applying to everything in sight is a winning strategy for career progression. Moreover, being unprepared for success might also be risky.

Imagine getting this call: "Hi Joe. This is Jane from ABC Corp. I'm responding to the résumé you submitted to us. Thanks so much for your interest. Can you tell me why this job appeals to you?"

Gulp. Joe's chances could be doomed from the get-go if he can't quickly summon to mind a better answer than: "Well … I applied to lots of jobs. Remind me which company you're calling from, and tell me about the job. Then I'll be able to explain it to you."

Already, Joe has blown his chance to show that he actually cares about this particular opportunity. Worse, he cemented in the mind of the interviewer that he is submitting frivolous applications out of desperation and likely isn't a serious candidate.

To be fair, you can't be expected to put in hours researching the details of every company before submitting an application. Nonetheless, it is important to have a clear sense of why you're interested in every company to which you apply, and what in your background should make that particular company interested in you.

If you want to make a hit, then take the time to understand the basics of your target companies' employment brand. Be prepared to tap into their carefully crafted reputation from your first conversation and all the way through the hiring process.

Here are five possible answers to the "why work here" question. Pick and choose from them, and expand with the facts of your particular situation. Thereby, you can demonstrate that you've done your research, your interest is real and your candidacy makes sense:

1. "I've known several colleagues over the years that have worked at your company, and they have all said great things."

2. "I was excited to see on your website that you feature employees talking about how great it is to work for your company. These days so many people seem to hate where they work for one reason or another. It's wonderful to see that your employees are proud to talk about how much they love their jobs."

3. "Your company's Facebook page is really engaging. I love how you [fill in the blank]."

4. "I'm connected on LinkedIn to many people who work at your company. When I reviewed their profiles, I saw that we all shared some things in common. [You might reference similar accomplishments, prior employers, colleges, etc.] It struck me that this is the kind of place where I can fit in and excel, so I was thrilled to see you have this opening."

5. "Your company is known for making great products that help people do X. But on top of that, I know of your company's leadership role in our community through your support of X, Y and Z events or causes. Your products and philanthropy show you to be a company that cares about both the bottom line and giving back to society."

Of course, to be in a position to make any of these kinds of statements you need to do a bit of work. Check out the company's own website and Facebook page to see what it does in the community. Follow it on LinkedIn, and do a search for people in your network who have experience working there. Then, look at several of their individual profiles to determine what you have in common with them. Search for the company in the news to see if it is mentioned for something with which you can identify.

You don't need to know every detail at the very beginning of the search, but you should know enough to justify a genuine belief in your own mind that there is a basis for you considering this company, and for that company to consider you.

When you go about things this way, you won't be able to apply to anything close to 150 jobs simultaneously. But the quality of your thoughtful and purposeful applications will produce a more focused target group of opportunities that can move your search forward. When you present a compelling answer to the "why are you interested in our company" question, you will be well on your way to establishing the basis for being seriously considered for a job that will advance your career at a company you respect and admire.

Jobs/Vacancies4 Tips For Older Job Seekers Facing Discrimination by CVWizards(op): 6:26am On Oct 30, 2014
"I'm 58 years old, out of work… and I'm not ready or financially able to retire. My age is really making it difficult to find a job," laments a job hunter.

Sounds familiar?

As an older worker, you can't eliminate age discrimination. But you can learn what lies behind it and take steps to differentiate yourself from stereotypes. By doing so, you increase your chances of receiving serious consideration. Here's how:

1. There is a natural inclination to believe that older workers aren't up-to-date with their skill sets. Tip: Don't be stuck in the past, and keep up-to-date with all things in your field. Show off recent training courses, certifications, or other credentials. If you aren't up to speed in your area of expertise, understand that employer rejection may be about your knowledge and skill sets, not your physical age. You can't go back to being 28, but you can continue to learn no matter how old you are. Also, be sure to delete references to outdated resources like DOS and WordPerfect 5.0 from your resume.

2. Younger managers may feel awkward hiring people who are about as old as their parents. Tip: Be aware of the unstated messages you convey. Imagine a 30-something hiring manager reading your resume that begins, "Twenty-eight years of experience doing X." You may intend to show longstanding experience and expertise. But the resume reader may imagine you saying, like a parent might: "I've been doing this since you were in diapers." If you don't want to call attention to your age, don't lead with age-related language. Instead, start with something like: "In my most recent role at Widget Company, I provided value by doing A, B, and C."

3. Hiring authorities fear that older workers are slowing down. Tip: Remain active, and show it. A Personal Interest resume section that references significant physical activity displays that you remain energetic and in shape. Community volunteerism and participation is another way to display that you do more than just what's expected.

4. Resume readers focus on what you have done for the last eight to 12 years. Tip: Remember that the purpose of a resume is to demonstrate your skills and relevant work experience. You don't need to list every job going back to the lemonade stand that you put in front of your house when you were age 5. It is perfectly reasonable to limit your resume to positions dating back 10 to 15 years, provided that you include this line: "Details of prior professional experience available upon request." This way, you acknowledge a longer history honestly, but recognize that you aren't relying on things you did early in your career to land a job today.

Get rid of your functional resume that focuses on skills rather than providing a chronological description of your professional path. Employers have figured out that older workers use them to obscure their age. Resume readers legitimately need to learn what you did quickly, along with where and when you did it. When you don't provide dates, you wave a red flag and invite the reader to conclude that you are both evasive and old. Provide the facts in an easy-to-follow format, which will lead to the inevitable conclusion: "This person is the answer to our needs."

Remember: Reality is what it is. Nonetheless, you do have the power to fashion your image as an energetic, with-it person. And when you do, you level the playing field between yourself and your younger competition.

Jobs/VacanciesIs The Roadblock To Getting A Job Inside Your Head? by CVWizards(op): 6:18am On Oct 29, 2014
A long period of unemployment often takes a significant psychological toll. As the days and weeks mount up, the tasks of job hunting become more daunting. Isolation from former co-workers takes hold. Bills mount up. Savings dwindle. Relationships fray. The feelings of rejection can become further amplified when prospective employers fail to respond. It is not at all uncommon for long-term unemployed individuals to experience situational depression—a very real disease that calls for intervention of one kind or another.

Be Well Partners Career Coach Stephanie Legatos works with those in Greater Boston undergoing transition who have an attitude of "I'm damaged goods. No one will want me." According to her, poor self-esteem is a "transcendent issue" that must be dealt with to undertake a successful job search.

What to do when you are down on yourself? Career counselors convey some common responses:

Claim Your Own Sense of Self-Worth

Tip: Legatos prods her clients to think about their own endearing qualities. "Think about why your spouse or partner loves you. Ask yourself what your best friend would say about why he or she thinks you are great," she suggests.

Another coach, Kim Meninger of Great Heights Coaching, advises her clients to "reconnect with your strengths, and understand what you do better than others. Once you claim this value, it will be easier to convey it to others."

Even when so many are unemployed through no fault of their own, job hunters are often plagued with their own irrational inner feelings of guilt. When this occurs, it becomes much easier to curl up in a corner than to get out of the house and go network with strangers.

Gail Liebhaber of Career Directions has 20 years of career counseling under her belt. She sees one of her tasks as helping people unburden themselves of the stigma they perceive about themselves.

Understand That Effective Networking is About Building Relationships, Not Amassing Contact Lists

Ironically, it can be self-isolating to spend hours online in a frantic effort to collect connections on the big three social networking sites: LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. This is especially true when you add people to your network without any personal interaction or discussion. It is important to have a clear strategy. If all you want is a large database, that's great. But if you want to be able to motivate your contacts to further your own objectives, it is important to see the social media sites as a means of fostering real relationships.

Meninger argues that online communities provide an "illusion of connectedness." Despite the fact that they claim hundreds of millions of members, she observes that the "social" part of social networking doesn't come easy to many job hunters. While she considers social media a useful tool, she reminds us: "Social media doesn't get you a job. People get you a job." In essence, one can be alone in the midst of a large crowd, whether in real life or online.

Tip: Be strategic in your decisions about with whom to link or friend. Meninger suggests that job hunters aim to have at least a 10- to 15-minute conversation either on the phone or in person with people they connect with, no matter how the connection is made.

Networking is a learned skill for most people. The old adage, "To get a friend, be a friend" is key. If people feel that you are interested in them only for what they can do for you, they are much less likely to want to deal with you. Turning a "contact" into a vital part of your network entails taking the time to learn about them. What do they do? How do they do it? What might you be able to contribute to their efforts? One of the reasons the business referral network BNI is successful is because it inculcates in its members the motto, "Givers Gain." Put differently: Give to Get.

It all comes down to this: When you know and appreciate your own value, you will be able to best interact with others. You will be able to contribute to their success, and gain an even greater sense of your own self-worth. By dispensing with the roadblocks that come from within yourself, you will clear the path for a more successful job search.

As children, we are already being asked by grownups – “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I want to be a Policeman, I want to be a Nurse, I want to be a Lawyer, I want to be Superman and other answers are being offered in a jiffy. But as we grow old and asked the same question, it seems that it is very difficult to answer anymore.

What is your career path? Choosing a career is different from choosing a job. Majority of job hunters do not even know what careers they really want. They just need a job to have income, buy some material things and pay the bills. You won’t last on a certain job if you don’t know your career path.

So choosing a career is a vital decision for every one of us. You must be very careful while choosing a career because once you have chosen a career, it is very difficult to backtrack or take a u-turn.

As early as possible, sit down and write in a piece of paper what you want to happen in your life. Do some soul searching and know what really drives you. In the piece of paper right down your interests, your values, your skills and personality preferences, know your passion and strengths. You need to have a well informed road map on your chosen career path. If you believe in your soul that teaching children is a vocation that fuels you, then go teaching. Get enrolled on education courses and be a teacher. When you have a job that does not fuel your passion, you will quit and find another job. Always remember the old adage – “Know Thyself.

The money versus passion debate is a normal scenario that keeps on going in your head as a job seeker. You need to survive so it’s okay to work as a fast food chain attendant even if what you want is to be a writer. For starters, it’s normal to have this predicament, but never ever throw your dream of becoming a writer. Remember that you can still write in your leisure time and follow your bliss.

If you are still in college and still lost on what career you want in life, feel free to visit your career counseling office and talk to the counselor. There are also online services and tests that can help you assess yourself on choosing the right career path. As an adult who is still looking for his right career path, there are lots of career guidance organizations and coaches who can be of help to you. You can also attend relevant workshops such as Connect Your Values to Career Satisfaction, Identify Your Skills and Accomplishments, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and DePaul Interest Finder (DIF).

As a job seeker always consider your inner bliss, your life purpose, your right career path. Just being employed in a job that stifles you is like being a rat on a spinning wheel. You just keep on running but actually get you nowhere.
Pack up your bags and bring your map towards the attainment of your right career path!

Finding the right person to hire can be equally exciting and stressful at the same time. You're motivated to find a new team member who can share the workload yet you're anxious because the pressure is on not to hire the wrong person. We all want candidates to show us they are as close to perfect as possible. Who doesn't want someone who can tackle the workload with little or no learning curve? While we want a new hire to deliver the goods, candidates are also inspecting you to see if they should commit to working with you and your team. Candidates take their hopes of an ideal next boss, employer and job very seriously. When you find the candidate that fits everything you need, you have to get them excited about the job, organization and growth potential. The best interviewers paint a descriptive picture of the role, team, experience they will earn and potential for opportunity. The best interviewers also don't overlook the key ways to attract ideal talent because they know the greatest candidates are coveted by everyone and they interview to win.

Here's a powerful secret to interviewing, candidates are searching for clues of your business savvy, trustworthiness and signs that you are someone they'd enjoy working with on a daily basis. Candidates need to trust you with their next career move which you need to recognize is a big decision very few take lightly. To build trust with a candidate, be transparent about what's not ideal in your current role or team and how you cope as well as the opportunities you've received and how they've benefit your career. The best candidates sense insincerity and crave honesty and authenticity in a future manager or co-worker.

To increase your chances of hiring the best person, show candidates you'll give them what they need. In a shaky economy, candidates worry more than ever about starting a job that's unstable or offers limited opportunity for growth. Candidates want to hear more about the role models on your leadership team and how your mentor program works. Explain how your succession programs successfully help navigate the career paths of your team into new and rewarding roles. Show that promoting from within is crucial to your success. Learn each candidate's career goals and then discuss the specific experience this role can offer so they realize you'll offer work that's meaningful to them.

Jobs/VacanciesHow Do You Know That You Are Choosing The Right Career? by CVWizards(op): 11:28am On Oct 24, 2014
Everyone has different skills, interests, experiences, aims and goals. Therefore, it is not necessary that if your father is an architect, you’d be one too. On the other side, most of us don’t even know their interests. But it is not such a big problem. With the help of a little guidance and some thinking, you can take this very important decision of your life.

There are many things to take care in job interviews but one must not take much pressure. Here are some useful tips that can help you land a successful job:

1. Research the Company/Organization
The web is a blessing, and this is the right use of it: Research about the organization you applied in, gather some facts and make use of it. You can look up their employment history, annual reports, service information or media reports. Anything that you believe is quotable during the interview (without looking overconfident) is worth remembering. Not only this, but when you look up them on web, you can also see what is it like to work there. So, if they ask you during the interview that why’d you want to work here, you can answer them what they exactly want to hear. This is absolutely truth.
But in Nigeria context saying or not saying those words does not guarantee you the job, if you dont no anybody. Anybody that truly wants to give you a job won't care about what you study in school. Is only those that don't have "level" that will be telling you that they wish you study a particular course or another. even when u give them the degree they wish you had,You will still hear words like ,i wish u make a 2.1, when u even make that 2.1 they will still say they wish is a first class, what about when u get that first class, they will still ask you to go for your masters first maybe before you finish that masters they would have retired, it is then you will no the true meaning of trust no man. My people before you go for any interview just pray for God GRACE. that is all.
Yes, God's grace is what everyone needs. Not only for interviews, but in everything we do.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: How To Answer The Interview Question: Tell Me About Yourself. by CVWizards(op): 5:44am On Oct 21, 2014
Don't just read the article and go your way. It will do you a lot of good to create a short statement about yourself. Look for a quiet place to practise so that it doesn't sound memorized, when you get to face the interviewer.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: I Graduated With A Pass. Is It Possible For Me To Get A Job Without Connection? by CVWizards(op): 7:31pm On Oct 20, 2014
Graduating with a poor grade means you've got a lot more work to do than your counterparts. You must therefore, humble yourself and be prepared to start from a lower position, and then work your way up. You can achieve this by building your skills and establishing good relationships with your colleagues and superiors. And very important, be on the lookout for internally advertised jobs.
Jobs/VacanciesInterview Question: You've Not Held A Similar Role. How Are You Going To Cope? by CVWizards(op): 3:17pm On Oct 20, 2014
Answer: Firstly, this is an obvious weakness. Weakness mean risk to an employer and they are looking for re-assurance that you will adapt to the new environment.

Relate your previous experience to similar situations where you moved departments and had a new role or were faced with new technology which you had to learn quickly. Turn this into a positive about “how you are able to adapt to changing circumstances and have a flexible approach. How you pick up new skills quickly. How you enjoy the challenge of the ever changing...... Read complete article at: http://blog.cvwizards.com.ng/?p=134
