the Mariam Ashley Yusuf Foundation in collaboration with Edo State ministry of education has launched a comprehensive campaign aimed at raising awareness among schools, educators, and community stakeholders about the dangers of human trafficking, sexual abuse, and drug abuse.
The campaign took place at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City and brought together various components of the education ecosystem, including unions, students, Corps Members, teachers, parents, and government agencies such as Edo State Migration Agency, NAPTIP, IOM, the NDLEA, the Nigeria Police, and representatives from the community. Together, they formed a unified effort to protect the Edo child from significant social vices.
Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the Edo State Commissioner for Education, officially opened the campaign, praising the initiative as timely given the state government’s ongoing education reforms. He stated, “Education is not just about academic performance; it is about shaping responsible citizens—the Edo Child. This campaign reinforces our collective resolve to safeguard the future of the Edo child from predators and destructive habits.”
Her Excellency, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Edo State, emphasized the urgent need to empower the Edo child with the knowledge and values necessary to resist negative influences. She noted, “Human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and substance abuse are real threats to the future of the Edo child. She called for action to strengthen prevention efforts, sustainable rehabilitation, and integration pathways for victims. Additionally, she launched her book titled "Stolen Dream," which recounts the story of a trafficking victim.
The program included interactive sessions, and open discussions, allowing students to learn from real-life scenarios and discover practical ways to respond. EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT: Fresh Facts Emerge on How ARISE News Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu Died During Abuja Robbery Attack
The last has not been heard about the tragic death of a young and vibrant journalist working with Arise TV, Somtochukwu Maduagwu who lost her life during a robbery attack at her residence in the early hours of Monday in the Katampe area of Abuja.
An eyewitness, Hon Ejiro Okpihwo who spoke to Abuja PR practitioner, AlexReports said the robbers in their large numbers had invaded the block of 3-storey building on that fateful morning.
In a bid to conduct a swift operation, they divided themselves in groups to be robbing the flats one after the other.
Somtochukwu Maduagwu who lived in the 3rd floor after sighting the robbers was gripped in fear and had attempted to escape over possible fear of being molested.
The eyewitness who lives in a house very close to the robbery scene said in the rising tension and chaotic environment, the now late TV anchor and ex beauty queen attempted to jump from third floor for her dear life while the robbers told her not to.
She however dived, landing on the floor with her head, which caused her a fatal injury.

The police were said to have arrived the scene about ten minutes later and met Somtochukwu Maduagwu battling for her life after the robbers had left.
She was immediately rushed to the hospital in the police vehicle before she finally died.
"What the public should know is that the lady was not shot, contrary to narrative that it was a planned assassination. She jumped all the way from third floor and hit her head on the floor", the eyewitness said.

The federal government has announced approval for the establishment of 9 new private universities in the country, ABUJAPRESS reports.
This came from a total of 79 active requests made by their promoters.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa announced the approval on Wednesday while briefing State House Journalists, after the Federal Executive Council FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The new universities include, Tazkiyah University, Kaduna, Kaduna State, Leadership University, Abuja, FCT, Jimoh Babalola University, Ilorin, Kwara State Bridget University Mbaise, Okirika-Nweke, Imo State and Greenland University, Jalingo, Taraba State.
Others are, JEFAP University, Suleja, Niger State, Azione Verde University, Amaigbo, Imo State, Unique Open University, Ojo, Lagos State and American Open University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Additionally, the FG also approved a seven year moratorium for the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions.
Alausa attributed the moratorium to none patronage of some of the previously approved institutions.
”We are doing this to further halt decays in tertiary institutions which may in future affect the quality of education and consequently cause unemployment of graduates from some of these institutions,” he said.

This was one of the activities lined up for his 40th birthday this week.

Also, in 2024 , at least 687 students benefited from her Foundation's scholarship outreach, an effort geared towards offering them opportunity for a brighter future.
The full scholarship which was targeted for minority primary students from low-income households also covers tuition fees and books.
Before then, at least 50 pupils of Community Secondary School Oraifite, Anambra, benefitted from humanitarian intervention of the non-governmental organisation, as it paid fees of 50 pupils of the school.
This year, an a bid to foster inclusiveness and give the physically challenged persons a sense of belonging, her non-governmental organization, Dr. Krystal Changchangi Foundation also organised a para-soccer tournament, where two sides slugged it out in para-soccer in Abuja.
