GAIYD Sensitizes Abuja Residents on Protection of Boy Child's Mental Health, Offers Free Medical Test
A non-governmental organisation, Great Achievers Initiative for Youth and Community Development (GAIYD) has held its 2025 annual street sensitization in Abuja the nation's capital, with a focus on the improvement of the boy child's mental health, ABUJAPRESS reports
With the theme, "Common Mental Health Issues in Boys", the outreach also featured free medical campaign, where medical professionals conducted free health screenings for blood pressure and hepatitis for residents of Abuja.
Speaking at the sensitization outreach, the founder of GAIYD, Dr. Hillary Akpua, noted that adequate attention has not been paid to the emotional and psychological struggles faced by young boys in the Nigerian society, noting that continued neglect could have long-term consequences for families and society.
“The boy-child has been neglected and it’s high time we started talking about the boy-child. The girl-child is important, but so is the boy-child. If we keep training only the girl-child, she ends up marrying an untrained man and the cycle of imbalance continues,” Akpua said.
Highlighting this year's theme, Akpua lamented the cultural silence around boys’ emotions. “A lot of boys are going through so much but because society tells them to ‘man up’, they bottle things up. That’s dangerous. Mental health is just as important as physical health,” he said.
He added, “It’s better to train a boy than to repair a broken man. Boys need safe spaces to talk, mentors to guide them, and support systems that validate their struggles. This is what GAIYD is committed to building.”
GAIYD has consistently championed initiatives such as community and school sensitizations, drug abuse awareness, and the One Boy, One Skill programme, among others, all aimed at equipping boys with tools for personal and emotional growth.
Dr. Akpua appreciated IGmart Med-Laboratory and Scientific Equipment Limited for providing medical supports. He also thanked Zoom 360, Specialists, Doctors and Nurses, for providing free dental checkup and care at the event.
A Medical Laboratory Scientist and CEO of Kayalte Medicals Limited, Linus Akawo, described the health screening as timely, especially as World Hepatitis Day approaches.
Also speaking, the Team Lead for Zoom 36 Dental Care, Jerry Tersoo, described the collaboration as impactful.
“We attended to 36 patients. Fifteen underwent dental cleaning, while others received consultations and follow-up treatment plans,” he said.
Tersoo noted that Zoom 36, which specializes in a range of oral health services including teeth whitening, implants, and root canal treatments, partnered with GAIYD to promote total wellness among young males.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November governorship election in Anambra, Amb. Sir Jude C. Ezenwafor has described as false online report that he has passed away at the medical facility, stating that he is in a "very stable" condition.
It could be recalled that Amb. Ezenwafor was hospitalized late Saturday following an attack by unidentified gunmen in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja.
The governorship hopeful had described his experience as near death when he escaped assassination attempt after he was attacked late Friday night in Abuja.
In a statement on Sunday by his Media Office, Ezenwafor said he is currently at a private medical facility in Abuja where an operation will be carried out by doctors to extract pieces of bullet lodged in his body following the attack.
"The above report is misleading, malicious and fake, aimed at diverting public attention and create wrong impression on the circumstances surrounding the attack on the governorship candidate in Wuse 2 Abuja, FCT.
"We want to state categorically clear that Hon. Ezenwafor sustained various degrees of injuries in his two legs yet to be operated any moment from now. He is very stable and receiving adequate treatment from a private hospital in Abuja", the statement reads in part.
He therefore urged the media to refrain from publishing unverified news for public consumption, especially on an intricate issue of such magnitude.
Amb. Ezenwafor also solicited for prayers and support from Nigerians for a successful surgical operation and quick recovery.

A former member of the Nigerian Senate, Sen. Dino Melaye has been called to bar, making him a duly certified advocate of the Nigerian Supreme Court, ABUJAPRESS reports.
He was among the 5,734 presented for call to bar in Abuja on Wednesday, a figure said to be the highest in the history of law school.

One of the Abuja most famous entertainers, Precious has lost his father, Nwaokike Precious Onyeamachi at the age of 82. He was from Oru East, Omuma Autonomous Community, in IMO STATE, ABUJAPRESS reports.
He died recently at the Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital Abuja after a prolonged illness, a family source says.
The entertainer who broke the news of his father on the social media described him as his best friend. "My beloved daddy just passed onto glory", he wrote.
The late Nwaokike has been described as a good father and husband who was also a committed Christian.
"Before his death, Daddy was a grandfather, Uncle, First Son of 6 children, graduate of Assemblies of God theological School, Uwu, in Edo state, and retired as a pastor with Over 50years of Service.
Daddy’s hobby was Reading the Bible and has read it for 257th Times but was targeting its 258th Times before his death. His Burial Arrangements on going" Stainless Precious revealed.

A support group made up of climate champions in the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the umbrella of APC Climate Change Network (ACCN), has thrown its weight behind Senator Tanko Al-Makura for the position of National Chairman of the APC after former chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje's resignation last week.
