Thanks for your response. Nice to know you have attended some SNAP sessions. Having been in contact with SNAP in Durban as well as ASAP in Somerset West and recieved some trainings too, I recognize that its good starting point. There may however be a need to build on this a lot more... If you get what I mean. Speech and Behaviour therapy is a lot more that a couple of seminars and courses. You may want to contact the international center for Behaviour analysis (Ajah, lagos) if interested in more in depth training. My son is doing great now and fully mainstreamed. I currently have a team of 19 board certified therapists/ technicians with trainings in different holistic therapies to support him and the other kids under my agency. It takes a great heart to want to work with kids with different abilities and I commend you. |
Please spread the word: An established artist or art teacher is urgently needed in Portharcourt to nurture and mentor a highly gifted boy who has innate and unbelievable skills in painting and drawing with mild cognitive and communication challenges (savant syndrome). The position is available on part time basis. If interested or know anyone interested, please send a mail to pleasantplacescentre@yahoo.com |
Hi Osunde Omorodion, I am 'excited' to see your contact all over this thread. I believe the more credible, authentic and good quality services are available for our kids, the smoother our journey to recovery. It would be nice to know your training background as a speech and behaviour therapist , the name of your agency and location.i have checked through RBTs, BCaBAs and BCBAs at the behaviour analyst certification board and did not see your name on the credential list. Please forgive my inquisitive self. I am just a little bit concerned. |
Hi, I am an 'autism mom' and I have undergone trainings in Applied behavior Analysis. I am currently a registered behavior technician( RBT) and have recently completed my BCABA coursework. Tired of the crap therapy services I was getting, I concentrated on building my own capacity to address the different emerging needs a child with autism or other challenges may have and have also undergone trainings in sensory integration therapy as well as techniques such as rhythmic movement therapy, brain gym, HANDLE, DPPT in other to provide help and functionality first for my son and the over 18 children I presently work with in my therapy centre located in Portharcourt. I also run an inclusive education school in Portharcourt. I also engage with a large network of parents and therapiats to provide ongoing trainings, support, counseling and referrals. I would love to share and learn from you and others on this forum. |

Hi Doc, We would seriously appreciate if you CAN refer us to a pediatric neurologist instead of accusing serious minded, caring and loving mothers working their butts off day and night trying to recover their kids and ensure they live a better life of trying to cut corners.Pray tell me,how many doctors do you know in Nigeria and even outside of Nigeria who understand and can manage autism?I for one would be very willing to sell all i own and borrow more to ensure my son gets the best of treatment.Trust me, we have tried it all.The teaching hospitals.....private doctors....neurologists etc and most of them DO NOT HAVE A CLUE!The closest they can guess is referrals for CT scans and MRI that usually show nothing.Thereafter the usually confused doctor not wanting to seem unknowing and incompetent prescribes 'Ritalin'.By the way, one of the parents who have been in contact through this forum is a consultant pediatrician in a teaching hospital married to a gynecologist and for 6 years they have watched their son continue to regress without a clue as to how to help him. I do not want to mention names but i have met with several pediatric neurologist in different states in Nigeria. Many are acclaimed as authorities in their field but they have been unable to help.Oh,we don't even count the trips to UK,Dubai and South Africa......the many Skype, phone and email consultations with doctors in India, South Africa,USA and UK that some of us mothers have made. Many have been useful because doctors over there care to listen, research and understand that autism is a Spectrum development disability and as such requires a multidimensional approach to addressing its many and varied symptoms. Pray tell me again,in what areas are we trying to cut corners? Speech, behavior and or occupational therapy? Sensory integration therapy? special diets like GFCF/SF or SCD,trying to live green and organic? Providing support to worn and tired out mothers? Standing up for our children and breaking the silence on autism? Please do your research sir !Autism can be managed and many children lose their diagnosis because their parents chose to 'cut corners' and not rely on doctors sitting on their high horses with their noses in their medical books! I am a SUPERMOM.I am doing the best that i can for my son who by the way is losing his diagnosis each passing day because i chose to 'cut corners'. GOD BLESS YOU DOC and thank you for you very 'encouraging' comment. ![]() |
@amenamen.my son is doing very well.I am amazed at how far we have come in the last one year and half.God has been merciful. My son talks now,his conversation skills are improving daily, so are his social skills. He can feed himself, responds to his name, better eye contact, hyperactivity has reduced a lot,he is more composed and focused and a lot of the behaviors that classified him as autistic are gone no.He is recovering very fast and at a pace that amazes me.A few months ago we discovered that he has an unusual gift for reading. He reads and pronounces very complex words and sentences to the amazement of many including his teachers.H e does social play and pretend play e.g attempting to feed his teddy, pretending to cook etc.He dresses and undresses himself without help. There are still some behaviors that we are still grappling with like he recently started echolalia which makes him repeat questions you ask him before he answers.so when you say 'what do yu want' he replies 'what do you want' before he says 'water'.He can answer 'yes' and 'no' appropriately and he enjoys playing pranks at me.He also says 'sorry' when he has done something to upset you and would pray before he sleeps. He writes and reads and identifies up 1 to 200 if he wants to.he knows his alphabets and phonics and would write both small and capital letters when in the mood.He vehemently refuses to have anything to do with numbers. If you ask him to write '1', he would write 'one' instead. He sometimes ignores parts of numbers e.g he would see 106 and say 6 or 10 leaving either the first part or last part behind. He still does speech and behavior therapy but we reduced to two hours at home daily. His therapist only goes to school twice weekly now though it was formerly everyday. He participates in assembly etc.I have had to change therapists and organizations about four times as most of them do not have a heart for the job or do not know what they are doing. He shows interest in music so we got him a set of drums and a piano which he uses sometimes. He is almost obsessed with shapes and would go to bed with a round object(any one) daily. He calls those objects circle. Over the past months,i have supplemented him, chelated and used homeopathy. These i did based on findings from specific tests we did to test for allergies, mineral and vitamin deficiencies, metabolic issues and heavy metals. He is completely off the GFCF diet after over a year on it.We however still limit his intake of processed foods, unhealthy snacks and drinks which make him spacey and hyperactive.Cellfood mineral oxygen water helped a lot with his gut issues. He still takes this daily. He also does his epsom baths weekly and bentonite clay bath weekly too.Essential oils like lavender, ylang ylang, vetiver and cedarwood used to massage his week helped his sleep too but he doesn't need them anymore.Homeopathy and supplements like DMG,Folinic acid,B6 and L carnosine also helped with his speech greatly. I started a Blackeberry group-SUPERMOMS as a support group for mums with children who have development challenges and many of the members are from Nairaland.Together we have embraced hope and every little improvement in our kids is worth celebrating.we share tips and ideas and no matter how distraught we feel, there is always someone on the group with a listening ear. @ Iguodela, your nephew may not be on the spectrum but he sure needs a lot of help.Early intervention is key and trust me, most of the work, you guys would have to do alone.I have met several doctors and most of them know next to nothing about autism or speech and development delays such as .Sadly, many do not want to know and this is not only in Nigeria.Getting a proper diagnosis is difficult. They like us mothers are groping for answers but unlike them,we cant wait! @K4KENNY,over time i have come to respect a mother's power or intuition. When a mum thinks there is something about her child, usually, there is.I would advice that you get him assessed and right away start addressing the issues you are identifying.Aggression and self injurious behaviors such as head banging are major red flags.I have attached an assessment form here which would give you an idea but PLEASE don't be quick to label your child as several tools will be used to determine if he is on the spectrum or not. Also, accurate diagnosis cant be made until he is 3 years old but you need not wait.Clean out his diet, help him eat healthy, socialize with his peers. Although quite difficult be sure to let him know that aggressive behaviors and tantrums are unacceptable behaviors. You can email me on gedaisy2000@yahoo.com |

Hi atise,my son is a little older and has been diagnosed with Autism.First things first, you need to see a paediatic neurologist to take a look at your son.I have seen a couple and most seem to be lost when it comes to issues like autism-dem no teach them for school,i think. .But then, you need to be sure that it is not merely a speech delay or another developmental challenge.Next,i would suggest you get in touch with a speech therapist Nice lady and very empathetic or someone with experience in autism and related disorders .Also read,read,read...research,research research and pray, pray, pray!. You may need to look at stuff like his diet, going green and bio as much as possible.Love him more, dress him in the best clothes, take him out as much as possible, talk to him, read stories, buy him good dvds that will help him develope speech.(no telletubies, waybuloo cos they don't talk and are nor good models for ur child) Try bumblebee dvd- www.bumblebeekids.com and 'your baby can read' dvds.Buy lots of books with pictures snd words.Find out what your child loves e.g music, painting etc and use it to reach him. Also pay attention to his feeding.how does he eat, what does he like to it,do certain foods make the symptoms you are seeing worse or better as well as his sleep pattern.you may need all these information to assist in getting him assessed and diagnosed. You can reach me on gedaisy2000@yahoo.com. I am not a doctor and i do not know too much.I am just a mother on the same journey who is bent on recovering her son one step at a time.I believe that God only gives special gifts to special people because he knows you will do a great job taking care of them with his help. Stay blessed, Daisy. |
Hi,Aigboma and HBOT, Thanks for taking out time to read and respond to my post.I have been very busy lately,so sorry for not responding.@HBOT,i am sure you mean well but my son does not have cerebral palsy. He was diagnosed with mild-moderate autism using several checklists including ATEC.I am currently doing several investigations and tests to see what might be affecting him and so far have been told he has gluten and egg allergies,he also has some heavy metal toxicities and yeast issues which i plan to address using biomedical treatment. For now, within a few months i have notice[left]d great improvements using a combination of speech and behavioral therapy as well as diet restrictions i.e taking him off most processed food, more veggies, fruits and fresh food. i also have replaced cow milk and dairy with rice milk.He is doing therapy 8 hours daily excluding weekends.I also try to take him out more so he can interact with other kids. I have been doing lots of research on my own and have heard of several therapies including HBOT which i understand has significant relief for some symptoms of autism and other developmental conditions but there is no major scientific proof. This is however the same with several other therapies such as son-rise,cranio sacral therapy, homeopathy, chelation etc and does not mean that they do not work.It is pertinent to point out here that autism symptoms are different in different individuals, suggesting also that its cause and possible treatment method varies from person to person. For now,i am not desperate enough to want to try every therapy that comes my way especially as Aigboma rightly pointed out,it is a child we are talking about. Speech therapy and diets have worked for us so far.Just yesterday i was trying to take my son to be bathroom to have his last 'wee' for the night as soon as i noticed him dozing off and he grumpily said 'no,I'm sleepy'! He wasn't talking that much just a few moths ago. My son is a special child and i am working on embracing his peculiarities- expand his strengths(he has quite a lot,far ahead of his peers and work on his weaknesses (mainly language and social skills). God gives special gifts to special people like me .I believe autism is treatable,i have read several recovery stories and have seen a child who is almost fully recovered(in Nigeria)!I hope i haven't bored you much with my rantings ![]() stay blessed. |
Hi Agiboma, Thanks for your response. We actually have and are still implementing the steps you pointed out above with him and that is why i think he has improved considerably. There are a few other issues i didn't raise especially as my post was getting too long E.G fetal distress at birth due to the cord around his neck and other social behaviors he exhibits like not playing with other children only adults, hiding under tables, chairs and in cupboards, hyperactivity especially at night and towards evenings.More importantly is the fact that he has words and can articulate them when he wishes, properly but for some reason decides to keep them to himself. For example he says words like 'My daddy' then goes quite on that for about a month or two before he says it again.he says 'mummy','eat', 'yummy-yummy' and 'good bye,see you , ' after which he goes mute for a very long time.other times he just screams ' say it!' and throws a tantrum. When that does not work,he just goes to the fridge or wherever to get what he wants by himself. When you ask him questions or coerce him to say he word,he just shuts his eyes and locks you out or he walks right out on you.Sometimes we catch him whispering words to himself like he is not sure of himself.Like i said, all these are recent improvements after we started working one on one with him at home and with the help of the speech enhancing DVDs and flashcards.I also started giving him omega 3(he hates to take it though) Trust me,i would love so much for NOTHING to be wrong. My husband and i are doing our best not to push or fret too much but you know how it is with being parents, there is that urge to do something to bring out the best in your child. This is why we are seeking for professional help.If for nothing, just to tell us that there is nothing unusual going on or to provide a second opinion based on what the therapist in Lagos told us after assessing him.We don't want to be too pushy but we also know that living in denial would not be beneficial to us or to our son. Still waiting for contact of speech therapists in Portharcourt. Thanks again. |
Hi All, I guess this is my first time of posting a new topic on the forum though i visit often. My son was 3 years in November and his expressive speech is delayed. He is a very sweet boy, very active and friendly even to strangers.he however has poor eye contact and limited speech. I had him evaluated by a speech therapist in Lagos last December and summary is that he needs speech therapy to help him along at least 3 times in a week. The challenge however is that i currently live in Warri where there is no such facility. My husband and i have discussed at length and have reached a decision to relocate preferably to portharcourt (due to his job and a few other considerations) or to Lagos if that does not work out. Please folks,i would appreciate if anyone can give me contact of speech therapists in Portharcourt if any,so we can have him re-evaluated for a second opinion and start therapy if need be. I have discussed with some paediatricians and very few can provide referrals or at least information on what the issue is. He (my son) started talking at about one year then stopped.I work with him daily using flash cards and DVDs i got form bumblebee.com and teachmetoread.com.He can read and identify his alphabet and phonics, his numerals 1 to 14,basic shapes and colours but only when i he wants to.He however has never answered his name, does not answer yes/no or basic questions, does not point at objects and has low eye contact.his attention span even for his age is very very short except when he is looking at a picture book which he loves. He has only recently been completely toilet trained. He has an older brother who is 5 years old most times i wish to believe what everyone say, that he would outgrow it, but what if he doesn't S I don't want to wish in another few years that i had sought help for him earlier. Please help. |

that up there was a joke though i call him that once in a while when i want to be funny or when i want to remind him that he's no longer a boy but a husband and father. We call each other baby cos thats what we have always called each other before our son came. Now that we have a son he still is my first baby, and always will ![]() |

very crazy indeed. If i were in her shoes,i would get it all in the open and tell my husband.keeping secrets like this can be disastrous.THE ex will blackmail her if she knows she's scared of letting her husband know.if her husband is mature and really loves her,he should invite the guy to a nuetral place and tell him that he knows of his past relationship with his wife, appreciates the fact that he also loves her, explain again that his wife has moved on with her life by getting married to him and advise mr ex to also move on.The man should be made to know that should he try anything funny, the issue will be reported to the police. I do before but i no do again no be wahala. It takes a real man to take a "no" for an answer ![]() |
na wao, i don't think banning one's hubby is the best way out of a misunderstanding in marriage no matter the offence.couples should learn to communicate.i also can't find any reason why a married couple should have sepearte rooms. In short the prist who wedded my husband and i advised that we should actually get a small bed for our room(not six spring o) that way, diffrences will be quickly resolved when body touch body-you know what i mean? From personal experience i can testify it works. As for your uncle,If you can advice him next time he should try to handle such issues in house.it gets more complicated when you involve third parties in your relationship ESPECIALLY family members. He should find a way to apologise for whatever he has done wrong even if it means going on hid knees.Make e no worry,no body go see am and if his wife is wise, she no go tell anybody talkless of getting bigheaded on account of that.
