Nairaland / General / Citiserve owing their Staff for 4 Months, shortpays them for October by Damco007(m): 6:12am On Nov 03, 2023
Imagine a company such as Citiserve that has been owing their staff for the past four months comprising of July, August, September and October, finally paid them for only October. Even to the extent of short paying them to the tune of Thirty-Three thousand naira in this hard economy. How cruel can some companies be. This is very horrible.
Nairaland / General / Why Do Big Companies Owe Their Staff Salary For Months by Damco007(m): 12:58pm On Oct 29, 2023
This post is meant to find out why companies such as Citi Serve Limited cannot pay their staff salary for 4 months running.

The economic situation we live in the country is very bad and as such any company that is doing well and deprives their staff of their salary for months without any cogent reason is heartless and should be highly condemned.

One of such Big companies is Citi Serve Limited. They have been owning their staff for the past 4 months without communicating to them when they plan to pay their monthly salary. This has left some of the staff to the mercy of their employers.

Please Nairalanders what do you think? Are there any provisions in our law to sue such companies.

Thank you

Foreign Affairs / Re: Top Scandals Of The Trump Presidency by Damco007(m): 11:40pm On Jan 16, 2021
Lets take a look at the the 3 most worst scandals of the Trump presidency

3. Ukraine Quid Pro Quo/ Trump–Ukraine scandal

The Trump–Ukraine scandal which involved efforts by U.S. president Donald Trump to coerce Ukraine into providing damaging narratives about his then-2020 rival, Democratic Party presidential candidate Joe Biden as well as misinformation relating to Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections.

Trump went on to block but later released payment of a congressionally mandated $400 million military aid package to allegedly obtain quid pro quo cooperation from his Ukrainian counterpart, president Volodymyr Zelensky. A number of contacts were established between the White House and the government of Ukraine, which culminated in a phone call between Trump and Zelensky on July 25, 2019

On September 24, 2019, the House of Representatives began a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump, led by six House committees. Trump was impeached on charges of abusing the power of his office and obstructing Congress, but was acquitted by the Senate with major support from the GOP senators.

2. The Corona Pandemic

The covid-19 corona pandemic which began globally was most felt in the United State. With at least 401,903 coronavirus deaths and 24,105,260 infection cases. The Trump administration had been accused of not paying serious attention to the virus.

Opinion polling had indicated that less than 50% of Americans trust information provided by Trump regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, as opposed to local government officials, state government officials, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci.

President Trump has been publicly optimistic through much of the pandemic; some of his optimistic messaging had diverged from that of his administration’s public health officials. Trump had downplayed the threat posed by the coronavirus to the United States, as well as the severity of the outbreak from January to mid-March.

From February to May, he had continually asserted that the coronavirus would “just go away”. It was until February 25 that the CDC had waited to first warn the American public to prepare for a local outbreak of the virus.

Trump has repeatedly uttered falsehoods regarding the pandemic, one of such falsehood was promoting unapproved treatments such as hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine. In such instances, scientists such as Anthony Fauci, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (director-general of the World Health Organization) have publicly countered his message to the public while providing the correct information.

Trump had never admitted mistakes in his handling of the outbreak, but has always blamed others. In October 2020, Trump and some of the people working within the White House, including his wife Melania Trump, former Presidential Counselor Kellyanne Conway, and White House communications director Hope Hicks tested positive with COVID-19 due to lack of precautionary measures been placed in the white house.

1. 2021 Storming of the United States Capitol
In an attempt to steal the 2020 elections. President Trump rallied his supporters into storming the United States Capitol.

The violent attack against the 117th United States Congress on January 6, 2021, carried out by a mob of supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump in an attempt to overturn his election defeat in the 2020 presidential election was perhaps the height of the Trump’s administration scandals.
At a “Save America” rally on January 6 morning, Trump supporters gathered in Washington, D.C. in response to his outcry on January 6 in support of his false claim that the 2020 election had been stolen from him, while demanding that his Vice President Mike Pence and Congress reject Biden’s victory.

He was accompanied by his son Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani, and several members of Congress. Trump told them to “fight like hell” to “take back our country”, while encouraging them to march over to the Capitol.

After the rally in which Trump incited his supporters, thousands of his supporters marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol, where a joint session of Congress were just beginning the Electoral College vote count. Many of the crowd breached the police perimeters as they stormed the building in an attempt to prevent the formalization of President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory by the legislators. The riot led to the evacuation and lockdown of the Capitol, including five deaths including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, while dozens more were injured.

In a Twitter video, Trump called the rioters “very special” and told them to “go home in peace” while yet repeating his false election claims. Having received pressured from the GOP lawmakers along with the threat of removal, and numerous resignations from his administrations, Trump went on to commit to an orderly transition of power in a televised statement.

It was only after the crowd had been dispersed from the Capitol later that evening, that the counting of the electoral votes resumed and was completed in the early morning hours. Pence against Trump expectation declared President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris thereby affirmation their victory.

In response to the events many social media and technology companies suspended or banned Trump’s accounts from their platforms with many business organizations cutting ties with him.

The storming of the Capitol was described as treason, insurrection, sedition, domestic terrorism, assault, and an attempt by Trump to carry out a coup d’état. A week after the riot, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump for “incitement of insurrection” with 10 GOP republicans joining the democrats in impeaching Trump making him the only U.S. president to be impeached twice.

Foreign Affairs / Top Scandals Of The Trump Presidency by Damco007(m): 11:39pm On Jan 16, 2021
In a couple of days the Presidency of Donald Trump will be coming to a end as the Biden administration starts off amidst the turmoil of the past week. Like every US presidency which draws a lot of studies and review around the world. The Trump Presidency will go into history as a very controversial one. It is undeniable that the 45th US President is a unique leader quite different from all his predecessors.

Every US administrations has had their own controversies and scandals at one time in history but today Dambela takes a look of the Top 10 scandals of the Trump which have come to define his presidency.

10. The Stormy Daniels–Donald Trump scandal

One of the most controversial actions of Donald Trump was his alleged affair with adult film actress Stormy Daniels whom he tried to stop from disclosing an affair they had in 2006. On January 12, 2018, The Wall Street Journal reported that in October 2016, U.S. President Donald Trump had arranged payment of $130,000 to Daniels had signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Initially, Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen denied Trump ever having such alleged affair, and fought to suppress the allegation based on the NDA, but he went on to publicly acknowledge making the payment a Month later.

Some of the issues raised over his actions were whether the payment violated federal campaign finance laws, either because the payment was not duly disclosed as a campaign contribution or because campaign funds may have been used towards the payment of Daniels.

President Trump on April 5 stated he had no knowledge of payment made by Cohen, but admitted on April 26 that Cohen had represented him in for the first time. In August 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to eight criminal charges, including a campaign finance violation for Daniels’ payment. Cohen was sentenced to three years in federal prison on various charges. Daniels went on to file three lawsuits against Trump and Cohen.

9. Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett

ourt nomination in the US has always been considered a political one but Trump Presidency was faced with allegations of stealing a Supreme Court Seat when on September 26, 2020, he announced the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States to fill in the vacancy left by the death of renowned Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who had passed on some weeks earlier. Prior to her nomination, Barrett was a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in South Bend, Indiana.

On October 26, the Senate voted to confirm Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court, with all but one member of the Republican Party voting in favor and all Democrats voting against; Barrett took the judicial oath on October 27.

The Democrats rebuked Republicans, for violating a precedent they had established in 2016 when they the GOP senators refused to consider President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland just more than nine months before the end of his term, while accusing them of hypocrisy. Her nomination was 35 days before the 2020 presidential election which made her nomination and confirmation as the shortest period of time between a nomination to the Supreme Court and an election in U.S. history.

8. Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections
The US 2016 U.S. presidential election between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump was fraught with allegations of Russian interference with the aim of harming the campaign of Hillary Clinton, thereby boosting the candidacy of Donald Trump. According to the U.S. intelligence agencies, the operation — code named Project Lakhta was ordered directly by Russian President Vladimir Putin As Presidential candidate, during the first presidential debate, Trump said he doubted whether anyone knew who hacked the DNC, and questioned the Russian interference. During the second debate, Trump said there might not have been hacking at all, and doubted Russia involvement.

He was accused by his rivals as encouraging Russian meddling. His actions at the Helsinki summit in 2018 was viewed as in Putin’s pocket and prompted bipartisan backlash. In 2020, the FBI revealed in their investigation the role of Roger Stone, a longtime confidant of President Donald Trump who was convicted the previous year in Robert Mueller’s investigation into ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, that Israel openly helped Russia to meddle in the election.

7. Veracity of False statements made by Donald Trump
Politicians are always known for their political lies. According to Carole McGranahan who wrote for the American Ethnologist journal in 2017.
“It has long been a truism that politicians lie. However, “Donald Trump is different” from other politicians. He stated, citing that Trump is the most “accomplished and effective liar” thus far to have ever participated in American politics

It is no doubt that President Donald Trump has made many false or misleading statements, including thousands throughout his presidency. Many Commentators and fact-checkers have described his false statements as “unprecedented” in American politics.

Trump is known to have made controversial statements and subsequently denied ever doing so. By January 13, 2021, The Washington Post’s Fact Checker database had already counted 30,529 false or misleading statements.

FactCheck.org a body responsible for fact checking false claims declared Trump the “King of Whoppers” stating, “In the 12 years of FactCheck.org’s existence, we’ve never seen his match. He stands out not only for the sheer number of his factually false claims, but also for his brazen refusals to admit error when proven wrong.

Some of President Trump’s false claims include:

i) President Trump has repeatedly claimed that he would “build the wall and make Mexico pay for it”. Eventually the funds used to build the wall was approved by the US senate after threats of Government lockdown.

ii) In January 2018, Trump claimed that texts between FBI employees Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were tantamount to “treason,” but The Wall Street Journal later reviewed them and concluded that the texts show no evidence of a conspiracy against Trump.

iii) In May 2018, Trump developed and promoted a false conspiracy theory alleging that the Obama administration had planted a spy inside his campaign to help his rival Hillary Clinton win the 2016 election.

iv) During the 2018 California wildfires which caused $3.5 billion in damages and killed 103 people, Trump on November 17, 2018, misrepresented a method which Finland used to control their wildfires. Trump stated that the President of Finland Sauli Niinistö called Finland a “forest nation” and “they spend a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problem.” President Niinistö would not recall mentioning raking Finland’s forests, rather Finland uses “a good surveillance system and network.” he stated debunking Trump’s claims.

v) Trump repeatedly and falsely characterized the economy during his first 28 months in office, as the best in American history.

vi) What best way to begin his administration with false claims. The day after his inauguration, he falsely accused the media of lying about the size of the crowd at his inauguration. His White House press secretary Sean Spicer backed up his claims about the inauguration size.

vii) Trump has on several occasions taken credit for business investments that began before he became president.

viii) On Family separation policy. President Trump has repeatedly and falsely said he inherited his administration’s controversial family separation policy from Obama, his predecessor. In November 2018, Trump stated, “President Obama separated children from families, and all I did was take the same law, and then I softened the law.

xi) Obamagate conspiracy theory: Trump and some of his supporters had alleged that Obama and his administration conspired to survey his presidential campaign for political purpose. Trump has nicknamed the series of events, Obamagate. However his critics have called his claims as an unfounded conspiracy theory.

x) Republican Party approval rating tweets: Since he took office in 2017, Trump has occasionally tweeted his approval rating between 94% and 98% in the Republican Party without citing any reliable source.

xi) Voting my mail: President Trump has repeatedly made false, misleading and baseless claims in his criticism of voting by mail in the United States prior to the US Presidential elections. Some of the claims included that other countries could print millions of mail-in ballots while claiming that about 80 million unsolicited ballots were being sent to Americans.

xii) Support for the Black Americans: Prior to the elections, Trump had claimed multiple times that his administration has done more for the black community than any US president in history while in most cases comparing to all presidents, with the exception of President Abraham Lincoln who abolished slavery in the United States. Many well known historians have always highlighted the achievements of President Lyndon B. Johnson who did most for the black community since Lincoln, for his Civil Rights Act of 1964 and his Voting Rights Act of 1965. Other historians also highlight the achievements of the presidencies of Harry Truman, Ulysses S. Grant, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama for the black community.

xiii) In 2016, during the GOP Presidential primaries. Trump as candidate suggested that Senator Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

xiv) His claims that he lost the popular vote in the 2016 election due to millions of illegal voters.

xv )Trump has promoted a number of conspiracy theories that have lacked merit including that his predecessor Barack Obama was not born in the United state, this he claimed from 2011 while questioning his citizenship. He only withdrew his false claims before the 2016 Presidential elections.

6. The George Floyd protests

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while he was been arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill. During his arrest Derek Chauvin, a white police officer in accompany of his colleagues knelt on Floyd’s neck for about nine and a half minutes after he was handcuffed while lying face down. His Two police collegues, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane, assisted him in restraining Floyd, while another officer, Tou Thao, prevented bystanders from interfering with Floyd arrest.

George Floyd eventually gave up after complaining of breathing difficulties, only after the medics had arrived. His dead lead to series of Civil unrest and police brutality protests that began in Minneapolis in the United States on May 26, 2020 and across the country.

The Trump administration drew widespread criticism for what critics called its hardline rhetoric and militarized response. The protests also led to a wave of monument removals and name changes throughout the world.

President Trump on June 11 challenged mayor Jenny Durkan and governor Jay Inslee to take back his city while suggesting the possibility of a military response President Donald Trump in response to the protest threatened to deploy the 82nd Airborne and 3rd Infantry Regiment. On June 3, he stated “If a city or state refuses to take the actions necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem.”This would require invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807

5. Sexual Assault allegations

Prior to becoming President. Trump has been accused of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, including non-consensual kissing or groping, by at least 20 women since the 1970s.

Some of this accusations have resulted in three instances of litigation: his then-wife Ivana also made such claim during their 1989 divorce litigation which she later recanted, businesswoman Jill Harth sued Trump in 1997 alleging breach of contract while also suing him for sexual harassment and, in 2017, a former The Apprentice contestant Summer Zervos filed a defamation lawsuit after Trump had accused her of lying about her sexual misconduct allegations against him.

Most controversial was his 2005 audio recording which was leaked during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump was recorded while bragging that a celebrity like himself “can do anything” to women, including “just start kissing them … I don’t even wait” and “grab ’em by the pussy”.

Trump went on to characterize those comments he made as “locker room talk” after there were several backlash. He went on to apologize for the crude language.

Another type of accusation was made, primarily after the audio recording surfaced, by several former Miss USA and Miss Teen USA contestants, who accused Trump of entering the dressing rooms of beauty pageant contestants. Trump, who owned the Miss Universe franchise, which includes both pageants, was accused of going into dressing rooms in 1997, 2000, 2001, and 2006, while contestants were in various stages of UnCloth. Trump had already referred to this practice during a 2005 interview on The Howard Stern Show, saying he could “get away with things like that” because he owned the beauty pageants the women and girls were competing in.

Trump has denied all the allegations against him, saying he was the victim of media bias, conspiracies, and a political smear campaign. In October 2016, Trump publicly vowed to sue all the women who have made allegations of sexual misconduct against him, as well as The New York Times for publishing the allegations, but he has yet to follow through with any legal action against the women who accused him.

In June 2019, a writer E. Jean Carroll alleged in a New York magazine that Trump had raped her in a department store dressing room in 1995 or 1996. Trump also denied ever meeting Carroll, despite a New York magazine had published a photo of Trump and her together in 1987.

The book All the President’s Women: Donald Trump and the Making of a Predator, by Barry Levine and Monique El-Faizy was published in October 2019, containing all 43 additional allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump.

4. Separating families at border

On May 7, 2018 The Trump Administration started a “zero tolerance” policy under which any person crossing the United States border may be charged with a federal misdemeanor. The policy was announced by Trump’s then Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. During remarks made on May 7 in Scottsdale, Arizona, he said, “If you are smuggling a child then we will prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you as required by law.”

There were protests against the Trump administration family separation policy as a reaction to the Trump administration policy of separating children from their parents or guardians who crossed the U.S. border either illegally or to request asylum, jailing the adults and locating the minors at separate facilities under the care of the Department of Health and Human Services.

How Did the US Thanksgiving End Up On The Fourth Thursday.

Have you ever wondered what’s so special about the US Thanksgiving day celebration and how it came to be. This Top 10 post helps addresses that. Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States, celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It was founded as a religious observance for all the members of the community to give thanks to God for a common purpose.

On Thanksgiving Day, families and friends usually gather for a large meal or dinner. The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year in the United states. As a federal holiday across the United States, government offices are closed and all employees are paid for that day. It is also a holiday for the New York Stock Exchange and most other financial markets and financial services companies.

1. The Thanksgiving event which most Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621.

2. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally in the United States on and off since 1789, with a proclamation by President George Washington after a request by Congress.

3. The US third president Thomas Jefferson did not declare any thanksgiving days during his presidency as he was a known deist who didn’t believe in the idea of divine intervention. The tradition was only renewed by his successor James Madison in 1814.

4. By 1858 proclamations appointing a day of thanksgiving were issued by the governors of 25 states and two territories.

5. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a a national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”, to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November 1863. Since then, Thanksgiving has been observed annually in the United States.

6. The Thanksgiving, New Years, Christmas, and July 4 independence day are the Four holidays included in the Holidays Act signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on June 28, 1870.

Roosevelt broke with this tradition due to November of that year having five Thursdays rather than the more-common four, He went on to declare the fourth Thursday as Thanksgiving rather than the fifth one. Roosevelt’s change was widely ignored. Twenty-three states went along with his recommendation while 22 states did not.

8. On December 26, 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill, from both houses of the U.S. Congress passing a joint resolution fixing the traditional last-Thursday date for the holiday beginning in 1942. This bill made it the first time making the date of Thanksgiving a federal law.

The turkey was then sent to a petting zoo were it spends the rest of their lives. The practice of pardoning turkeys in this manner has since then become a permanent tradition. Upon assuming the presidency in 1989, George H. W. Bush, who served as vice president under Ronald Reagan, made the turkey pardon a permanent annual tradition a tradition that has been carried on by every US president each year since then.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Donald Trump Admits That Joe Biden Won The American Presidential Election by Damco007(m): 7:44pm On Nov 15, 2020
Honestly we need Nigerian delegation led by Former president Goodluck Jonathan to prevail on Trump to admit defeat and accept the reality. Its time we teach them how to accept election defeat and not the other way round.
As for Trump, Its a lesson to all his likes. No man is God. Boosting of winning an election when you have failed to address some issues such as the Black lives matters, Corona virus devastation in the US, the internal division in his party and his Tax issues. He thinks the people are fools. Were he shot himself at the foot was telling his supporters to vote in-person decrying mail voting as fraud while democrats told their supporters to either vote by person or mail voting for those who can't go in person. So do the Maths and see why he lost.

He only loses when it does not favour him. He should stop acting like a child and accept defeat. Some days you win, some days you lose. That is the beauty of democracy.

Throwback:
It is time for Nigeria, ECOWAS, and African Union to send a high powered delegation to prevail on the American strong man called Donald Trump to step down after losing the election.

Such Nigerian/African delegation was successful in Gambia, to get Yahya Jammeh to step aside as an African strong man of many years after losing his last reelection.

Even Mugabe was prevailed upon to step aside in Zimbabwe.

Or we adopt the older Zimbabwean option where whoever was good enough to defeat Mugabe in a democratic election, would instead be offered the Prime Minister position a la Morgan Tsvangirai.

If Trump will not yield, I encourage the Nigerian government to impose sanctions on America until the dictatorship of Trump is brought to its knees.

This is what Trump has reduced American democracy to.

Nairaland / General / Top 10 Facts About The US Presidential Elections 2020 by Damco007(m): 5:41pm On Nov 07, 2020
The United States presidential elections whenever is held is always seen as a global affair. Since the first election of George Washington in 1788 to the last one held in 2016. All US Presidential elections have always drawn global attention. With 538 Electors, a candidate must receive at least 270 votes to be elected to the office of President or Vice President.

The US 2020 presidential elections have become a talking point not just in America, but in the rest of the world. After months of bitter campaigning and controversies, the US Presidential elections have finally come to an end, while the entire world awaits the result of this keenly-contested battle.

The US had over 100 million early votes – both in-person and via mail ballots – were cast even before the Election Day this year This was unlike the last three general elections in the county, this year the winner was not clear on the election night as counting of mail ballots is very cumbersome.

From the ongoing results and counting which is now rounding up. It is obvious the Democratic and former Vice President Joe Biden is leading in votes over his rival the incumbent president Donald Trump. In the meantime, we bring you some interesting Top 10 facts that make US election 2020 different from the previous ones held.

1. Voting by mail or otherwise: This year, the pandemic has sparked an unmatched shift to early voting, by mail or otherwise, and rising expectations that days or weeks might pass before the outcome is known. A record 100 million Americans opted for early voting in the presidential polls. Vote-by-mail is a new thing for many states in 2020, but for Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Utah, and Washington, all-mail elections are the norm. Oregon made record by having its very first vote-by-mail election all the way back in 1981.

2.An usual Polls amidst the pandemic: It is the first time a presidential election has been held in the throes of a deadly pandemic that has affected not only every corner of the country, but the rest of the world. During the 1918 midterm election, in the midst of the Spanish flu pandemic, saw voter participation drop 20% – although the fact that 2 million men were fighting in World War I also had an effect. By the time Republican Warren G Harding won in 1920, the flu had passed.

3. Most expensive elections: The 2020 US election cycle, including presidential and congressional races, came with an unprecedented $14 billion, making it the most expensive polls in history. The figure is more than the combined figures of the amount spent during the last two election cycles.

4. If defeated, Donald Trump will be the first president ever to be defeated by a former vice president and also the first incumbent US President to lose re-election since George Bush Sr. in 1992. While if Trump’s re-election would mark the first time in US history that voters re-elected four presidents in a row. The current record of three was set by the team of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe in the years from 1801 through 1824. Later, Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama also shared the record from 1993 and 2016.

5. Oldest President: If elected, Biden will beat Trump’s record as the oldest president ever to take the oath of office. Biden, who began his political career as the sixth youngest US senator in history when he was sworn in at 30 years, one month and 14 days old, would eventually become the oldest president elected and the oldest to serve at the age of 78 years and two months on Inauguration Day.

6. Biden could be the 15th vice president to ultimately get the top job, and one of only six to ascend by election rather than the resignation, natural death or assassination of a sitting president. The previous holder was George Bush Snr who as Vice President won the 1988 elections to became US 41 president.

7. If elected, Kamala Harris would become the first female US vice president in history. She will also be the first black woman to run for Vice President and the first south Asian VP nominee.

8. Former American Vice President and Democrat Presidential nominee Joe Biden broke the record of receiving the highest votes ever for a presidential candidate in the history of US politics. The previous holder was Barack Obama. In the 2008 elections, Barack Obama secured 69,498,516 votes, the most ever, and now Joe Biden has surpassed that tally with a record 74,816,005 votes at the time of this report.

9. Supreme court ruling on contensions results: President Trump has resulted to the Supreme court to contest some of the Presidential election results. The last time the result wasn’t clear within a few hours was in 2000, when the winner wasn’t confirmed until a Supreme Court ruling was made a month later which confirmed George Bush Jr. as the elected President.

10. The electoral college which began with 69 in the first US election of 1788 has since increased to 538 since 1964 till the present election. If the Electoral College were to tie — 269 Biden, 269 Trump — the House of Representatives would be responsible for deciding the next president. Instead of each representative getting a vote, however, each state delegation would get one vote, regardless of the state’s size. That means that the party that holds the majority of representatives in each state would presumably be able to vote for its candidate.

Religion / Re: Pastor Chris Oyakhilome: It's Not Trump That They Hate, It's You, The Christians by Damco007(m): 5:35pm On Nov 07, 2020
Its amazing how many people especially Nigerians see Trump as a Messiah. The guy is simply a con and Transactional politician who will only support you if he can get something from you. Not because he believes in what you believe but what he intends to get from you. He knows Christians plays a big role in determining who emerges as president. How come he never spoke or defended Christianity in all his business deals until he contested for President.
The democrats may not be perfect with their policies especially those that run contrary to Church but to paint Trump a con and divisive man who is good at telling lies at any chance he gets a Christ like figure is only attempting to ridicule our Christian Faith. I would have taken him serious if some his actions as a Person and President were in light with the Bible.

Golan007:
Let us just venerate him as St.Trump .

Better still, hang a portrait of him in every church.

Nonsense.

Foreign Affairs / US Decides: Nov 3 D-day by Damco007(m): 9:40pm On Nov 02, 2020
Just one day to the final US Presidential elections, tensions are high around the world as who becomes the next elected US President. While the incumbent Donald trump fights to secure a second Term. A former US Senator and Vice President under the Obama Presidency is keen on ending his presidency. If Donald Trump loses his bid, he will join Modern Presidents like Jimmy Carter, George Bush Sr. who lost their second term bid.

There has been several opinion and Tracker polls covering the election process. Just like the 2016 elections. Majority of polls favour Joe Biden defeating the incumbent president.

From result polls, Biden’s Path to 270 seems to widens while Trump’s Path Narrows. There are 13 Battleground states also regarded in the US politics as Swing states that could make or mar each candidates chances of winning the elections. The swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin are seen as very competitive and decisive on who emerges as winner of the race.

These 13 states could hold the key to the 2020 presidential election. For this battleground states, Joe Biden and Donald Trump will focus their efforts towards winning the 270 electoral votes needed to reach the White House.

The states that regularly lean to a single party are known as safe state while the Toss-up states which are currently Georgia and Iowa are those states with an unpredictable outcome as the votes could either way. If Biden is lucky to win all of the toss-up states, he would garner a huge 375 electoral votes, a total votes larger than any presidential candidate since Bill Clinton in 1996. in 2016, the trio of the midwestern states that powered Trump’s 2016 victory were Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. But these states are now leaning towards Biden.

Race to 270 electoral vote
Major Poll trackers categorizes states as either Safe Republican, Likely Republican, Lean Republican, Toss-up, Lean Democratic, Likely Democratic or Safe Democratic. For a candidate to be declared a winner. He needs 270 out of 538 Electoral Votes to secure the presidency. According to US News. 3.Area 51 (Nevada)

This Air Force facility which is commonly known as Area 51, is located within the Nevada Test and Training Range. This restricted secret military base of the US forces exists 83 miles north of Nevada. The facility has captured the imagination of both Hollywood lovers and conspiracy theorists for decades. The top-secret military base (which is still operational) is surrounded by barren desert, and the secrecy surrounding its Cold War-era stealth aircraft testing led to rumors of UFOs and aliens, wild government experiments and even a staged moon landing on the premises.

Some curious civilians do explore the area around the base, which has become a bizarre tourist destination, although visitors aren’t permitted inside the facility. Officially known as Groom Lake, its fame dates back to 1947 which is often linked with the Roswell New Mexico UFO incident. Legend has it that this top-secret military base hosts a lab where alien bodies and technology are still hidden today after after a UFO crash-landing in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, making the facility one of the weirdest places on Earth.

It’s the world’s most secretive airport and synonymous with conspiracy theories. This still-operational Air Force facility, known as Area 51, drew attention during its Cold War-era aircraft testing, which spawned rumours of sinister experiments, a staged moon landing and a lab run by aliens. Entering the base is strictly forbidden, need I mention nearly impossible.

Area 51 is most often referred in US pop culture. The area is believed to have a moonlike surface. This is a place used for the development of aircraft and weapons system by the US military. It’s scrutinized at all times to restrict any kind of foreign intrusion, While it’s true the military base is secretive (most military bases are), many of the conspiracy claims surrounding Area 51 have been thoroughly debunked by experts.

2. The Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt)
The Great Pyramid of Giza has been captivating mankind for thousands of years. The only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that is still intact, it continues to be one of the most visited tourist attractions on Earth. Visitors and scholars alike are still baffled by how the 455-foot-tall pyramid was created without modern tools, although common theories are that they were constructed using some type of ramp system.

The Pyramids of Giza will always be a source of wonder and bafflement, and because of that, it’s one of the most mysterious places on our list. The pyramids have been shrouded in questions ever since the day that they were discovered, and a plethora of unsolved mysteries exist about the inside of the pyramid which has an unsolved mystery inside of an unsolved mystery? The Giza trio of Pyramid tombs which is still shrouded in mystery has keep scholars continuously theorizing how such a structure could be created back then without a modern tool as we have now.

For centuries, people have wondered about, explored, and studied how the pyramids were built with such limited materials and without the use of modern technology. Let’s not forget the pyramids date back 4,000 years, so how possible could something so huge, strong, and precise could have been built with no modern technology tools still beats the imagination of many. Did slaves build it? Did aliens do it? Were the ancient Egyptians as advanced as we are today, No one knows as everything was wiped out.

There’s this major belief that the Pyramids of Giza, specifically the Great Pyramid of Giza, were built as tombs for rulers and wealthy people. Which would make sense in the level of dedication. Secret, unexplored rooms continue to be discovered, even up until very recently.

It is believed that the Great Pyramid of Khufu was built between 2589 BC and 2504 BC, and reached a height of 481 feet (146 meters). Don’t forget for historical records that Khufu’s pyramid remained the tallest building in the world until the 14th century, when England’s Lincoln Cathedral took the record.

Plenty of mystery continues to remain to this day how ancient builders constructed the huge pyramids out of 2.5-ton stone in the literal center of the Earth with absolutely no technology or modern facilities.

And top on our list:

1. The Bermuda Triangle
If there is one place around the world that has fascinated scholars and Travelers for decades is the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle is perhaps the most famous mysterious place in the world. This area which is about 500,000 square miles (more than 1,290,000sqkm) sits in the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, San Juan in Puerto Rico and Miami in Florida.

Legend has it that anything traveling over the triangle will be sucked up into a mysterious void, even though storms did occur during one or more “mysterious disappearance.” It has been reported that more than 20 planes and 50 ships are said to have mysteriously vanished into thin air or crashed without explanation while passing through this place. Though vessels manage to pass through the area with ease every day with no more disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. The unexplained accidents have still captured the public imagination.

The Bermuda triangle was said to “vanish” ships and airplanes without a trace. Theories have range from suggestions of supernatural activity to the more logical hypotheses that it’s down to magnetic compass variation or rogue waves. Some scholars have however disagreed with the legend explaining that most of the “mysterious disappearances” cited by believers weren’t mysterious at all, since the ships and planes may have fallen during storms or didn’t even sink within the triangle’s borders.

What secrets lurk in the triangle of ocean between Florida’s southern tip, Bermuda and San Juan, Puerto Rico? We may never know for years to come but either way, it’s a bit of a scary place to visit on this planet.

Hope you enjoyed our list. Do you agree with our list If you feel we miss any please feel free to add your list in our website comments section and we shall be glad to update in our next editions

6. Eternal Flame Falls (Chestnut Ridge Park, New York)

The Eternal Flame Falls remains one of the most craziest places in the world. It is a quaint waterfall located in Shale Creek Preserve, which is a section of Chestnut Ridge Park in Western New York. A small item at the waterfall’s base emits natural gas. Interestingly, it can be lit to produce a flame. This flame is visible all year round. It can be extinguished and must occasionally be re-lit. The flame is fueled by natural gases and burns bright right under a waterfall.

The bewitching orange-red glow that flickers behind this staggered waterfall, in New York’s Chestnut Ridge Park, is kept aflame by natural methane gas that seeps through cracks in the rock.

For travellers, If you follow the route to Shale Creek in New York’s Chestnut Ridge Park, you’ll find this strange orange-red light glowing behind a waterfall that looks like something out of a fairy tale. This Eternal Flame burning behind the water is fueled by natural methane gas escaping through cracks in the rock. Some may wonder, The flame isn’t quite eternal though — the water sometimes extinguishes the fire, but visitors most often reignite it with a lighter thereby keeping the magic alive.

5. Blood Falls (Antarctica)

Next on our list is one of the world’s coldest and driest place on the planet, Antarctica is home to a blood-red waterfall called Blood Falls that starkly pours down five stories along an icy white glacier. Most people won’t see Blood Falls in person, but even in photographs, the sight is arresting: a blood-red waterfall staining the snow-white face of Taylor Glacier. The place was documented in 1911 by geographer/geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor, a member of Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated expedition to the Antarctic. (Scott named the glacier for Taylor.)

Scientists finally determined that the grisly color comes from salty, iron-rich water from inside the glacier oxidizing and rusting once it’s exposed to oxygen. Amidst the unending whiteness of the snow, Blood Falls provides a creepy relief. The water is red in color due to the presence of huge amounts of Iron which certainly makes the list of the strangest places in the world.

Geologists originally thought the red colour was due to algae but the truth is actually much more interesting. It started around two million years ago when a saltwater pool was trapped inside Taylor Glacier.

Since then, glaciologists and microbiologists have sought to determine what causes the mysterious red flow. They’ve concluded that the source is a subterranean lake rich in the iron that gives the water its red hue. Some recent research has revealed microorganisms living 1,300 feet beneath the ice, are sustained by the iron and sulfur in the water. According to Forbes, the mystery surrounding Blood Falls has been solved. According to the researchers of the University of Alaska, the red coloring is due to “oxidized iron in brine saltwater, the same process that gives the iron a dark red color when it rusts.”

4.Easter Island heads (Chile)

This isolated island in the Pacific Ocean was once populated by the Rapa Nui civilization, which erected almost 1,000 giant stone statues known as moai approximately 900 years ago.

On this remote island far off the coast of Chile, hundreds and hundreds of stone heads and torsos stand stranded along long scenic paths. How the makers of this stones even managed to transport the 40-foot-tall (12m) statues, which weigh around 14 tonnes each, into place remains a mystery.

No one even know why they were placed there. Each stone heads weighs around 14 tons. These towering figures, which stand an average of 13 feet tall and weigh 14 tons apiece, captivated European explorers who first landed on the island in 1722. No one knows for sure why the ancient Polynesians carved and placed the statues across the island, though one recent theory hypothesizes that they were placed as markers of freshwater sources.

The giant carvings on Easter Island which are about 1,000 of them, have their torsos buried, leaving only human-like faces above ground. These Easter Island heads are some of the earliest examples of how prehistoric art came to be.

Before we mention our top 3 mysterious places. Lets mention other places worthy of note. Some of these places not on our top 10 are the following:
Crooked Forest (Poland)
Great Blue Hole, Belize
Lake Natron (Tanzania)
Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia

There are presently more than 50 mysterious spots around the world. But Dambela in her unique way brings you the Top 10 mysterious places. Have fun reading.

Starting off our list at the tenth position is:

10. The Nazca Lines – Peru
The Nazca Lines remains a well-visited site by Sci-Fi fans and extraterrestrial aficionados. However, it’s difficult to explain why the prehistoric Nazca culture created the enormous geoglyphs in 500 BC, which depicts an array of spiders, monkeys, figures, and flora.

For movie lovers and Harrison Ford fans, you may remember the Nazca Lines reference from the movie Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull where they played a huge role in enabling the explorer-cum-professor where the hidden city lied. For most people this place is not real even though it actually exists on the world map.

It remains one of the most unusual places in the world, these are humongous lines scarred into the desert landscapes of southern Peru. As explained in the movie itself, these only make sense from the skies (a plane!) from where people can make out the strange shapes carved into the otherwise barren desert landscape.

The pre-Columbian geoglyphs, which cover around 200 miles (322km), long had celestial associations or were seen as a giant calendar. The most popular theory is that they marked the locations of rituals surrounding water and crops – although the truth remains elusive to this day.

The prehistoric remains in South America are amongst the most awesome phenomenon and one of the most revered they UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing several thousands of tourists there every year.

9. Stonehenge (England)
This prehistoric monument dates back to more than 5,000 years ago is such a famous landmark that people might not even think of it as mysterious anymore. But many still wonder how and why these massive stones in England were made and arranged over the course of 2000 years has captivated researchers, historians and curious visitors to the site for generations.

There are still differing strange theories about Stonehenge, the mythical striking stones near the city of Salisbury, England. Some could indicate it was meant for a ancient burial ground, a UFO landing spot, a ritualistic druid site, or a Pagan winter solstice monument. However, there are as many speculations as there are invalid answers.

Nearly a million people visit Stonehenge, in southern England, every year. Many come during the summer solstice. This prehistoric monument is made up of huge stones that may have taken Neolithic builders as long as 1500 years to put into place. Some historians think Stonehenge was a place of healing, while others say it was a temple for worship.

It is widely accepted by researchers that it was built as a sacred temple and burial ground, but how the Neolithic people managed this massive architectural feat is still debated with the mysteries still remaining unsolved. The puzzling question is during an age of primitive tools, how were the heavy slabs moved and put into place? And why here?

This circle of rocks has long been one of the UK’s most well-known and mysterious sites, with historians and scientists baffled as to how its builders transported the monoliths 5,000 years ago. In 2019, close answers to this mystery came when Newcastle University students solved the riddle when they discovered that humans (not aliens) may have dragged the rocks in place using sledges lubricated with pig fat.

Stonehenge’s purpose does remain a mystery. The farmers and herders who built the structure starting 5,000 years ago continued to add to it over a period of 700 years. They left no written records behind, only a circle of striking stones near what is today Salisbury, England. If you’re fascinated by historic locations, check out these must-visit destinations for history lovers.

8. Door to Hell (Turkmenistan)
The Darvaza Crater, also known as the Door to Hell, still burns to this day and at night its glow can be seen from miles away. The crater is thought to have been created by a Russian natural gas drilling mishap in which engineers set the area on fire to stop the spread of dangerous gases, unaware of how long the fire would continue to burn. Its almost 50 years ago, when the gaping, fiery crater opened up in the desert of northern Turkmenistan in 1971.

Engineers were drilling a natural gas field in the northern Turkmenistan desert when a portion collapsed into an underground cavern. It was set alight to prevent gases from spreading and it’s still burning since then

7. Devil’s Bridge (Kromlau, Germany)
Very strange place with strange name I guess, This place with multiple places around the world having the name “Devil’s Bridge” due to some sort of supernatural connection, but the most famous one remains that located in the German town of Kromlau.

Known as Rakotzbrücke in German, this parabolic bridge dates back to the 1860s and is one of the most stunning bridges in the world. The Die Rakotzbrück bridge forms a perfect circle with its own reflection in the water below, a feat that could only be possible with some other worldly assistance. Strange! It is in fact one of the weirdest places across the world.

This is probably why the bridge is also known as the ‘Devil’s Bridge’. Constructed in the 19th century is famed for its unique construction accuracy, with the bridge and its reflection merging into a complete and perfect stone circle, no matter where you see it from. It seems that the makers of this spectacular bridge were more focused on its aesthetics than its utility. Both the ends of the Rakotzbrücke have thin rock spires installed, to make it look like natural basalt columns.

Rakotzbrücke is so pretty it could perhaps more aptly be called fairy-tale bridge. But its name, which means Devil’s Bridge, comes from its supernatural associations.
