Godwin Obaseki of People’s Democratic Party has been declared winner of the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.

Governor Obaseki polled a total of 307, 955 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu-Iyamu who secured 223, 619 votes.

Any outbreaks of these diseases across international borders, can be defined as pandemic, especially smallpox, which throughout history, has killed over 300-500 million people in its 12,000 year existence.


SIXTH CHOLERA PANDEMIC (1899 – 1923)
Death Toll estimate: 800,000+
Cause: Cholera

Like its five previous pandemic, the Sixth Cholera Pandemic originated in India where it killed over 800,000, before spreading to the Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia. The Sixth Cholera Pandemic was also known to be the source of the last American outbreak of Cholera (1910–1911).

Having learned from the past, the American health authorities, quickly sought to isolate the infected, and in the end only 11 deaths occurred in the U.S. By 1923 Cholera cases had reduced dramatically, although it was still a constant in India. The sixth cholera pandemic (1899–1923) like the first was a major outbreak of cholera beginning also in India, where it killed more than 800,000 people.

The cholera pandemic’s origin in India led to a rise in anti-Asian sentiment, especially towards Indian people and culture. Seven cholera pandemics have since then occurred in the past 200 years, with the first pandemic originating in India in 1817.

Generally considered the most deadly of the seven cholera pandemics, the third major outbreak of Cholera in the 19th century lasted from 1852 to Like the first and second pandemics, the Third Cholera Pandemic originated in India, spreading from the Ganges River Delta before tearing through Asia, Europe, North America and Africa and ending the lives of over a million people. Between 1852 and 1923, the world would see four more cholera pandemics.

British physician John Snow eventually succeeded in identifying contaminated water as the means of transmission for the disease while working in a poor area of London. That same year (1854) went down as the worst year of the pandemic, in which 23,000 people had died in Great Britain.

The third pandemic, which stretched from 1852–1859, was the deadliest. It devastated Asia, Europe, North America and Africa, killing 23,000 people in Great Britain alone in 1854, the worst single year of cholera.

Originally known as “Russian Flu” as it was called, this strain was thought to be an outbreak of the Influenza A virus subtype H2N2, though recent discoveries have instead found the cause to be the Influenza A virus subtype H3N8. The first cases were observed in May 1889 in three separate and distant locations, Bukhara in Central Asia (Turkestan), Athabasca in northwestern Canada, and Greenland. Due to the high population growth of the 19th century, specifically in urban areas, it helped the flu spread, and before long the outbreak had spread across the globe. In the end, the 1889-1890 Flu Pandemic claimed the lives of over a million individuals. Through this first true epidemic much was learned from it in the era of bacteriology.

7. ASIAN FLU (1956-1958)

Cause: Influenza


Asian Flu was a pandemic outbreak of Influenza A of the H2N2 subtype, which originated in China in 1956 and lasted until 1958. In its two-year spree, The Flu migrated from the Chinese province of Guizhou to Singapore, Hong Kong, and to the United States. The Asian Flu pandemic was another global outing for influenza. Having originated in China, the disease went on to claim more than 1 million lives.
Estimates for the death toll of the Asian Flu vary depending on the source, but the World Health Organization places the final tally at approximately 2 million deaths, 69,800 of those in the US alone.

The first reported case on July 13, 1968 in Hong Kong took only 17 days before outbreaks of the virus were reported in Singapore and Vietnam, and within three months it had spread to The Philippines, India, Australia, Europe, and the United States. There were deaths of more than a million people, including 500,000 residents of Hong Kong, approximately 15% of its population at the time even though the pandemic had a comparatively low mortality rate (.5%).

Also known as the Plague of Galen, the Antonine Plague was an ancient pandemic which affected Asia Minor, Egypt, Greece, and Italy and historians suspect that it could have been smallpox or measles. This disease claimed almost up to 2 000 deaths per day in Rome, though the true cause is still historically unknown.
This unknown disease was brought back to Rome by soldiers after returning from Mesopotamia around 165AD; they had brought back along with them the spoils of victory, while unknown to them, they had spread a disease which ended up killing over 5 million people and decimating the Roman army. The Antonine Plague, which may have been smallpox, laid waste to the army and may have killed over 5 million people in the Roman empire.

First identified in Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1976, HIV/AIDS has truly proven itself as a global pandemic, killing more than 36 million people since 1981. The virus is thought to have originated from chimpanzees. Currently there are between 31 and 35 million people living with HIV, the vast majority of those are in Sub-Saharan Africa, where 5% of the population is infected, roughly 21 million people.

Due to the high level of global awareness, new treatments have been developed that make the virus far more manageable, and many of those infected go on to lead productive lives. Between 2005 and 2012 the annual global deaths from HIV/AIDS dropped from 2.2 million to 1.6 million. Now, about 64% of the estimated 40 million living with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) live in sub- Saharan Africa.

SARS (2002-2003) claimed 770 lives. Ebola which ravaged West Africa between 2014 and 2016, with 28,600 reported cases and 11,325 deaths. Other earlier centuries epidemic include The Plague of Athens: 430 B.C. The Great Plague of London: 1665-1666 claimed 100,000. The Great Plague of Marseille: 1720-1723 and the Russian plague: 1770-1772.

3. PLAGUE OF JUSTINIAN (541-542)

Cause: Bubonic Plague consisting of Yersinia pestis bacteria / Rats, fleas.


The plague is believed to have killed perhaps half the population of Europe, the Plague of Justinian which was an outbreak of the bubonic plague afflicted the Byzantine Empire and Mediterranean port cities, killing up to 25 million people in its long reign of terror. Necrosis of the limbs was one of the terrifying symptoms.

The Byzantine Empire which was ravaged by the bubonic plague, began to see the start of its decline. The plague would go on to reappear periodically afterward. Some historical estimates suggest that up to 10% of the world’s population died. The plague is named after the Byzantine Emperor Justinian who reigned A.D. 527-565. Under his reign, the Byzantine Empire reached its greatest extent, controlling territory that stretched from the Middle East to Western Europe.

Generally regarded as the first recorded incident of the Bubonic Plague, the Plague of Justinian left its mark on the world, having killed up to a quarter of the population of the Eastern Mediterranean and devastating the city of Constantinople eventually resulting in the deaths of 40% of the city’s population.

The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, mostly regarded by many as the deadliest in history, infecting an estimated 500 million people worldwide about one-third of the planet’s population. One-fifth of those infected died between 1918 and 1920 . The deadly flu was first observed in Europe, the United States and parts of Asia before it began to spread around the world.

At the time the outbreak began, there were no effective drugs or vaccines to treat it. Citizens were forced to wear masks. Schools, theaters and businesses were shuttered and bodies piled up in makeshift morgues. Despite the name Spanish Flu, the disease did not start in Spain. During the war, Spain as a neutral nation and did not enforce strict censorship of its press, which could therefore freely publish early accounts of the illness and casualties. The pandemic almost pushed some indigenous communities to the brink of extinction.

The Spanish flu became the first of two pandemics caused by the H1N1 influenza virus, with the second being the swine flu in 2009. In fact, more U.S. soldiers died from the 1918 flu than were killed in battle during the war. In what seemed like years. Former US Vice president Joe Biden who served under President Barack Obama has finally chosen one of his fierce rivals in the just concluded Democrats primary election as his running mate in the upcoming November Presidential elections.

Biden made his announcement in an email to his supporters.

"I know a thing or two about being Vice President. More than anything, Iknow it can't be a political decision. It has to be a governing decision. If the people of this nation entrust me and Kamala with the office of President and Vice President for the next four years, we're going to inherit a nation in crisis, a nation divided, and a world in disarray. We won't have a minute to waste. That's what led me to Kamala Harris," Biden said in the email.

He also recalled the first time he met Harris through his late son, Beau.

"They were both Attorneys General at the same time. He had enormous respect for her and her work. I thought a lot about that as I made this decision. There is no one's opinion I valued more than Beau's and I'm proud to have Kamala standing with me on this campaign," he said.

In a tweet, Harris who became the first Black and South Asian American woman chosen for national office by a major political party said she's honored to join Biden and will "do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief."

More reactions from the political world continue to trail the choice of Harris as running mate to a man that may likely be the oldest man to become a US President and also the second Catholic President after the renowed US President John F Kennedy.

Obama under whom Biden served called it "a good day for our country" in a tweet about the announcement.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a statement, called the choice of Harris a "historic and proud milestone for our country."

Also not left out are former US president Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton who was also the Democratic nominee for president in 2016 tweeted at Biden and Harris congratulating them.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer -- who was also a top contender for the position -- used "#WeHaveHerBack" in her tweet congratulating Harris.

Other Democrats including some of the women who were also on Joe Biden's vice-presidential shortlist have hailed his historic appointment of Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate.

I worked closely with her when I was in Sacramento and she was the District Attorney in San Francisco. I continue to work closely with her here in Washington, DC as we push to reform our nation's policing system."

Andrew Yang, former 2020 candidate, said in a statement: "A vice presidential candidate who's leading the fight for cash relief for American families is exactly what our country needs right now. …

Her name is on Montblanc pens, Chanel products and a jewelry line with Zales. On August 4, 1962, Marilyn died at age 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her home in Los Angeles.

Born John Winston Lennon. He was an English singer, songwriter and peace activist who gained global fame as the founder, rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist of the Beatles. He started the Plastic Ono Band with in 1969 with his second wife, Yoko Ono.


After the disbandment of the Beatles in 1970, He continued as a solo artist. His first solo LP John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band had the international top 10 singles “Give Peace a Chance”, “Instant Karma!”, “Imagine” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”.

In 2002, Lennon was voted eighth in a BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons, and in 2008, he was ranked by Rolling Stone the fifth-greatest singer of all time. In 1987, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, both as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1994. Their group Beatles’ streaming and digital sales also add up to about 2.2 million U.S. album-equivalents in 2019. His Fellow Beatle George Harrison made the list in the Top 11-20 list. He died of gunshots wound in Dec. 8, 1980, at the age 40.

Theodor Seuss “Ted” Geisel was an American children’s author, illustrator, cartoonist, poet, animator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. A multifaceted artist known for his work writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.
Most of his work includes most of the popular children’s books of all time, selling over 600 million copies with most of the work been translated into more than 20 languages by the time he died.


He had licensing deals with Hallmark and Universal Studios. He wrote children’s books, some of these classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), If I Ran the Circus (1956), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), and Green Eggs and Ham (1960). He had a fruitful career, publishing over 60 books many of which have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, five feature films, a Broadway musical, and four television series.

Geisel won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for Horton Hatches the Egg and again in 1961 for And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.
About 5 million of his books are sold each year. He died in Sept. 24, 1991 at the age of 87 of Oral cancer.

It was a dramatic turn of event in Lagos as a lady known as Seyitan Babatayo, who accused singer, Dapo Oyebanjo popularly known as D’banj, of raping her has been arrested by the police.

The arrest was confirmed by her lawyer Ojoge Omileye and partners during an interview with premium times on Tuesday in Lagos.

But Bala Elkana, the Lagos State Police spokeperson has claimed not to be aware of any such arrest.

Meanwhile, lawyers to D’banj , Mike Ozekhome chambers has asked Ms Seyitan Babatayo to pay compensation fee of 100 million naira for raising false accusation of rape against their client in order to assuage the battered image of their client D’banj.

It is indeed a sad news as another black man known as Rayshard Brooks was shot dead on Friday 13 June in Atlanta.

Rayshard Brooks, 27 an African America was shot by a police officer during a struggle on Friday evening.

Meanwhile protesters and demonstrators have taken to the streets,closing down major highway and burning down the Wendy restaurant that made the call to the police.

Authorities say the police had been called to the restaurant because Mr Brooks had fallen asleep in his car outside the Wendy restaurant which was blocking the drive -through lane. Mr Brooks resisted arrest and failed a breathalyzer test and was seen struggling with the police officers in the video footage released by the police authorities. He was shot and taken to the hospital and later died.

The police chief Erika Shields had resigned, one of the officers involved in the shooting , Garrett Rolfe has been dismissed and investigation is on going.

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has confirmed Erika Shield’s resignation.

Nigeria may face another $2.3bn fine in arbitration in France over an alleged breach of contract on Mambilla Hydroelectric project.
This is coming after a British commercial court awarded $9.6bn against the country in favour of Process and Industrial Development Company in a botched gas processing deal.

The Mambilla project is currently a subject of litigation instituted by Messrs Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited.

The issue in dispute, according to a report by The Cable, is a claim by the plaintiffs that a $5.8bn contract for the construction of the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project on the basis of Build, Operate and Transfer exists in their favour.

They claimed that after they were duly awarded the contract in 2003, some ‘vested interests’ in government in 2017 signed another contract with three Chinese companies, Sinohhydro Corporation of China, China Ghezouba Group Corporation of China and China Geo-Engineering Group Corporation, to form a joint venture for the execution of the same project.

It further accused the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, of taking the unilateral decision to remove the company from the contract.

The company also accused the then Minister of Power, Mr Babatunde Fashola, of reneging on his promise to support the project.

As a result, the SPTCL dragged the government and its Chinese partners before the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, France, over an alleged breach of contract.

The chief executive officer of SPTCL, Leno Adesanya, claimed that the company had spent millions of dollars on financial and legal consultants to raise about $6bn for the execution of the project.
