Nairaland GeneralIs The Nigerian Music Scene Making Or Marring Our Youths? by dammyjay93(op): 2:13pm On Oct 22, 2014
I was listening to a music mix CD today and there were about four simultaneous jamming songs that made me very sad for the Nigerian music scene. Now when I say “jamming songs”, I mean the songs that rock our parties nowadays, y’know those songs that we refer to as club bangers. I’m sure that by now, you have certain songs in your mind.
Now, as to why these songs made me very sad, it’s pretty simple. The songs were pretty cool in terms of beat, maybe the tune, aaaand that was it. The songs lacked substance; all of them. The lyrics made no sense whatsoever and it made me wonder why these songs even topped charts in the first place. It’d be very pretentious of me to say that if these songs came on in the club or at a party; I wouldn’t dance because there is no substance, but for my listening pleasure or if I decided to be serious with my life for once, these songs just don’t cut it. Countless times, we hear about how what entertains us enters us and out of the abundance of the heart and all that. But that isn’t even why I’m here.
From an insiders’ point of view, I’d say the average Nigerian’s reaction to most of the music that we have is the reason why youths don’t want to do much. For the average youth in this country, there is only one career choice; the one that will bring money fast fast. Now if we celebrate a song in which almost the whole song is spent repeating four lewd or made-up words, of course other innovative, hungry, more creative youths will pick up the thread and come up with four lewder and faker words – with the predictable backdrop of an awesome beat that will rock your socks off. We will celebrate that even more and before long, we will have teenagers saying random stuff and making four times what their parents make and then it becomes a continuous cycle because more young people will work to reach the same level of fame and wealth that their superstar peers have.
This is the reason why we have bad music everywhere; this is the reason why we will continue to have bad music everywhere. Granted, not everyone can be a Bez or an Asa or a Cobhams or a Waje or an Omawunmi or a Praiz or a 2Face or an Olamide or a Phyno or a Banky W and so on, but could you at least sing real words and say things that people can maybe relate to or understand when they hear it? I realize this pseudo-rant is basically self-contradictory coming from one of the many youths who enjoy said jollof music, but in the spirit of full disclosure, I always feel like some chick that is doing the walk of shame the morning after a hot night with a random stranger right after I move and grind to one of these pointless songs.
When all is said and done, my point is this: we need more great music, and less crap one liners and scattered music concepts squeezed into the awesome pool of a great beat that will confuse listeners as to whether the song makes sense or not.

HealthHow To Stop Bad Breath by dammyjay93(op): 1:54pm On Oct 22, 2014
Hello people, how’s the day going? Today was one of those days in which I had no idea what to write about until life chose a topic for me. Quick question; have you ever felt like dying or stapling a person’s lips shut when they’re speaking to you? Like, you literally just feel like dying, especially when this person is someone you can’t tell to shut up? It happened to me guys, it did. Mouth odor is real, it is REAL.
Mouth odor otherwise known as bad breath, also known as halitosis – if we’re being doctor-y about it, can be a result of a list of things like poor dental habits, unhealthy lifestyle habits, types of foods consumed and health problems. More often than not, it’s a mix of poor dental habits and foods consumed that cause bad breath. Now, I could go and on about the things you eat or do that make your breath smell so bad, but I’ll suggest things to stop it instead; because I really almost gave up the ghost today. Bad breath has to go.
WATER
Water is essential for fresh breath, because it helps to wash out hidden food particles trapped between your teeth. It is advisable to swish water around your mouth regularly, especially after eating, so as to clean out food particles and clean your mouth. Basically, water is just as good as mouthwash in keeping your mouth clean when used right.
KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLEAN
You should brush thoroughly at least twice a day – it’s already stale gist that dentists advise us to do this. After cleaning the teeth, the tongue should receive special attention too. This is because bacteria left on the tongue will start to smell bad after a while, and then you will be unable to set P off social media because your breath smells.
Also, flossing should be done regularly, because food and bacteria trapped between teeth and at the gum line can be removed only with floss; if it’s left to linger, it can lead to chronically bad breath.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU EAT
This point cannot be emphasized enough, especially for those of you who eat everything. Not every time put something in your mouth, sometimes lick tom tom and be happy. Eating foods or fruits high in sulphur compounds like cabbages, eggs and onions, among other foods, will lead to bad breath even after you clean your mouth, because as foods are digested and absorbed into the bloodstream, they are eventually carried to your lungs and given off in your breath.
So brethren, foods with pungent odors should be eaten in times when you plan not to speak to anyone for at least four hours. I kid.
CULTIVATE GOOD HEALTH HABITS
Bad health habits like smoking or chewing tobacco-based products can also cause bad breath and reduce your ability to taste foods. I’m pretty sure anyone who knows what chocolate tastes like would never want their ability to taste tampered with.
I could go on and on about this, but let’s stop here. Other things to do include using mouthwash, chewing breath mints, making sure not to get stressed so your tongue doesn’t dry out, and regular checkups with your dentist. Also, it’s important to note that sometimes, a serious illness like pneumonia or bronchitis among many others is the cause for prolonged mouth odor. So in the event that your mouth can’t stop smelling, go for a medical checkup. But then again, it could just be that you are a dirty dirty fellow.
In case you don’t know whether your mouth smells or not, and you want to find out, look for a friend and say ”HI” in the breathiest way possible; their reaction will tell you all you need to know. Thank me later. Peace, love and amala.

Christianity EtcNigeria Will Overcome Its Challenges And Not Collapse Before 2015 – Adeboye by dammyjay93(op): 9:46am On Oct 19, 2014
General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye has assured Nigerians that the country will overcome all the current security challenges including terrorism, unemployment, economic turbulence as well as the prediction of the collapse of the nation before 2015.
Speaking at the church’s National Headquarters in Ebute-Meta, Lagos where he conducted a worship service themed:
“A Sure House”, the man of God said rather than being troubled over these challenges, Nigerians should move closer to God, who has the ultimate solution to every challenge of life.
Pastor Adeboye who was represented by his Special Assistant on Administration and Personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola said that since human efforts have failed to restore hope and peace in the country, it is crucial to seek divine intervention to numerous challenges confronting the country.
In his words: “The prayer that a new Nigeria will emerge by our father in the Lord is a prophetic word regardless of whatever the nation is going through now.
You will recall that Elisah prayed and prophesied in the midst of uncertainty and we see the result.
We trust God that history will repeat itself in Nigeria too.
Nigerians should shun all forms of unrighteousness, move closer to God with their heart and not with mouth and diligently seek the face of God in prayer”.
He emphasized the need for those in positions of authority to seek the face of God in everything they are doing while also admonishing the followers to adhere to the basic truth and biblical doctrines.
Speaking on the growing housing deficit in the country, Pastor Odesola said effective policies should be developed to address this as it is done in other parts of the world, adding that provision of affordable houses can address several social challenges in the country.

Since the 17th century, Welsh couples have been demonstrating their fondness for one another by trading lovespoons. The intricately hand-carved wooden spoons are decorated with various symbols. Some lovespoons were handed down to younger generations and carvings were added, while others were created so men could show off their craft. Proving your woodworking prowess to your beloved’s father has disappeared from Welsh courtship rituals, but the lovespoons are still gifted as decorations — especially on Valentine’s Day.

The Dai people from the southwest of China still practice several ancient courtship traditions, including one that finds young singles gathering by the village bonfire at night. The women sit around it wearing billowing skirts, quietly turning their spinning wheels. Men draped in red blankets “visit” the women by circling them, serenading the group with various instruments. If a man takes a liking to one of the girls, he will approach her directly with a song. If a woman wants to get the attention of a guy, she will invite him to sit down by offering him a stool (she keeps it tucked under her skirt until the time is right). The men wrap their dates in blankets, and they quietly talk.

For young couples considering marriage, bundling became a popular practice across Europe and Colonial America. Serious lovebirds would test the law of attraction by sleeping fully clothed in bed with a board or sack between them to quell any sexual temptation. Sometimes they were even sewn into their sheets. Clearly, no one was playing “light as a feather” at this sleepover.
Sweethearts not ready for bundling expressed their desires in other ways — but only at a safe distance. A hot date back then consisted of hanging out at home under the watchful eyes of your parents, but there was a way around their incriminating gaze. EducationDifference Between Education And Schooling by dammyjay93(op): 6:55am On Oct 16, 2014
Education vs Schooling
‘She’s well educated.’
‘His schooling was completed traditionally.’
Education and schooling appear to be the same thing; however, on pondering the idiosyncrasies of both disciplines, they take on different meanings and outcomes. Is the process of ‘educating’ someone dissimilar to that of ‘schooling’ another, or is the process exactly the same? This article examines the differences and the similarities between the aspects of educationand schooling.
Definitions
Webster’s defines education as ‘knowledge and development resulting from an instructive process’, or more specifically, the act or progression of acquiring or imparting knowledge. Most people think a goodeducation is the result of completing a specific number of years in a formal instructive discipline, such as higher educations acquired in colleges and universities in a specific field of study.
Webster’s dictionary defines schooling as ‘the process of being taught, such as in a school’. ‘Schooling’ is often thought to occur in the lower grades, where children are taught the basics which enable them to continue learning at the higher educational institutions. ‘Schooling’ is also thought to be accomplished in a particular vocational skillor trade, such as a ‘mechanics’ or ‘beauty’ school.
The difference between the definitions is subjective.
History
As communities grew, knowledgeexpanded, inventions came more frequently, and a greater needfor the next generations to have a more formal educational process developed. The educational process began with the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic; eventually adding additional instruction, such as history, geography, music, sciences, philosophies, religion, social studies, and arts. Advanced mathematics, sciences, and many other disciplines, became part of the educational process.
No one actually knows when formal schooling began. Could it have beenwith the cavemen training their children with the survival skills to continue their lives, and pass their skills on to countless generations of descendents? Prior to written languages, learning processes existed solely as oral traditions; societies were developed based on communicating this knowledge, or ‘schooling’ the next generation. One of the earliest examples of schooling found, was in Egypt, around 3000BC.
Methodologies
There are many methods of getting a higher education, and many theories for the most expedient and superlative manner to accomplish the goals. There are many varieties of approaches to identify the student’s abilities and aptitudes, and appropriate methodologies that focus on how personalities affect learning abilities. All learners fall into a specific category of oral learners, visual learners, or kinesthetic learners, and different approaches are more effectivebased on their needs.
There are many varieties of ‘schooling’ that have been popular and unpopular over the last several centuries. Grouping students together in common locations has existed and continued since the ancient Greek times. Another method of schooling is called ‘self-paced’, and this is when the students learn at their own pace, and are not forced to follow a daily curriculum. Since students learn differently, there is not one all-encompassing solution for education or schooling.
Summary:
1. Webster’s defines education as ‘knowledge and development resulting from an instructive process’, but Webster’s dictionary defines schooling as ‘the process of being taught, such as in a school’.
2. Education improved as the communities developed, but no one knows when schooling actually began.
RomanceI Love You But I'm Not in love With You: 5 Signs You Could Be Headed For A Split by dammyjay93(op):
1. Familiarity:When we are in a long-term commitment, we can actually stop "seeing" the person we love for who they are, all they do for us and in the ways we saw them when we were first together. They become a regular habit who is now annoying, rather than enticing. Our partners become boring, which breeds contempt within us because there is no seduction anymore. This sense of familiarity can cause us to be one foot in and one foot out of our relationship. To avoid splitsville, you have to put both feet back in where laziness once was and commit to working on the relationship. But you cannot be a one-man band. Your partner must have the same goals, aspirations and motivations.
2. Lack of conversation:Conversations intimately connect people. If we lose this piece of our relationship, then there is no common ground for us to meet and find each other. Conversations are what make us smart, interesting and sexy to one another. When we start telling outside sources all we used to tell our partner, this is a clue the love is dying. If you reach for your partner to share your thoughts and feelings and there is no interest, to save your relationship you will need seek help to get these parts of the relationship in sync again or consider if its time to call it quits.
3. Obligation sex:Once sex becomes a task, the love and lust in the relationship quickly go downhill. Men connect emotionally through sex and women connect emotionally through attention outside of the bedroom. It's a catch 22. For a man to be attentive outside of the bedroom requires he have a sexual relationship with his partner and for a woman to want to have a sexual relationship with her man she needs attention outside of the bedroom. If no balance is found, sex becomes an uneventful, passionless task. To stay in love, both partners will need to make the sex an eventful place to want to be. Without sex you are roommates -- perhaps a roommate you love but one whom you are not in love with.
4. You'd rather be with friends:When friend time provides us more love and connection than time with our partner, we are starting down that slippery slope of getting the majority of our needs met outside of our relationship. When all we talk about with our friends is the negative aspects of our relationship, it is a sure sign we have fallen out of or are no longer in love with our partner. When you see this pattern happening, try communicating with your partner about it and gauge their interest in fixing it, otherwise you could be headed toward a split.
5. Time apart: When we would prefer a hot bath and a good book to time with our partner, we must evaluate if this relationship can fill us or if it has run its course. Alone time is necessary and wonderful, but when it is used as avoidance or distraction then maybe the love we thought we had isn't there.
The love is gone when we no longer see any good in our partner or we no longer see them as a positive contributor to our lives in a meaningful way. We may need to consider reevaluating our relationship when we feel uninspired or bored, when we feel negative energy in the presence or our partner, when the idea of intimacy with them revolts us and when being alone is a more attractive option for your happiness.

PS: If you can still see the good, work it out and nurture it. If not, maybe the love is gone and it's time to move on.
Family5 Good Reasons To Get Married While You're Young, According To Research by dammyjay93(op): 8:07am On Oct 15, 2014
While delaying marriage has advantages -- a lower divorce rate, higher income for womenand fewer and less intense arguments between spouses-- studies show there also may be benefits to tying the knot before age 30. (However, there is such a thing as marryingtooyoung. Research shows that marriages beginning when a woman is 18 are twice as likely to end in divorceas those beginning when she is 22.)
Below are five reasons to get married in your 20s.
1. It could make you happier.
According to the National Marriage Project's 2013 "Knot Yet" report, the highest percentage of people ages 20 to 28 who consider themselves "highly satisfied" with their lives are married, as opposed to single or cohabiting. What's more, the largest number of women who described their marriage as "very happy" tied the knot when they were 24 to 26. A 2010 studyfound that "the greatest indicated likelihood of being in an intact marriage of the highest quality is among those who married at ages 22–25."
2. You'll make more money (at least if you're a man).
An analysisof American Community Surveydata from 2008 to 2010 revealed that among men in their mid-30s, those who married in their 20s had the highest levels of personal income. Economists have found, in general, that married men earn more than single men-- even when you control for other factors like age and education.
3. You'll have more sex.
Couples who marry in their 20s tend to have more frequent sexthan those who marry later. In a 2011 paper, Dana Rotz of Harvard University wrote that "a four year increase in age at marriage is associated with a couple having sex about one time less per month." What's more, married people as a whole have more sexthan their single counterparts. The sooner you marry, the more time you'll be spending between the sheets.
4. You'll drink less alcohol.
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behaviorfound that married and engaged young adults reported lower frequency of drunkenness than those who are not in a serious romantic relationship. "Marriage and engagement likely carry with them a heightened sense of responsibility and obligation and a less active social calendar, which leads to less drunkenness," the study's authors wrote. Laying off alcohol has many health benefits, including weight loss, better sleep, better skinand a reduced risk of some cancers.
5. There's nothing to be gained from waiting -- if you think you're ready.
We certainly aren't advocating a rush to the altar, but if you feel like you're prepared for that next step, go for it. Research says there's no advantage to delaying marriage just for the sake of delaying it. A 2010 study by sociologists Norval Glenn and Jeremy Ueckerstates that "A 25-year-old person who meets an excellent marriage prospect would be ill-advised to pass up that opportunity only because he/she feels not yet at the ideal age for marriage. Furthermore, delaying marriage beyond the mid-twenties will lead to the loss during a portion of young adulthood of any emotional and health benefits that a good marriage would bring."

1. The Antwerp Diamond Heist
Antwerp, Belgium is one of the diamond capitals of the world, with 80 percent of the world’s diamonds passing through the city before being sold on the market. A number of heists have taken place there, most recently a still-unsolved $28 million robbery in 2007, but the biggest of them all took place in 2003, when a team of master criminals known as the School of Turin managed to walk away with $100 million in uncut diamonds from the Antwerp Diamond Center vault. For sheer scope, ingenuity, and risk, few robberies will ever measure up to this one. The criminals had been planning the heist for years, and using copied keys and faked security camera footage, they managed to bypass the vault’s multi-million dollar security system, which had been thought to be impenetrable. The thieves escaped without incident, but DNA left at the scene allowed them to be tracked to Italy, where most of the gang has since been captured. The $100 million in diamonds, meanwhile, seems to have disappeared for good.

2. The Banco Central Burglary
Considered to be among the biggest bank heists of all time, the Banco Central burglary took place in 2005 in Fortaleza, Brazil. The robbery was the result of painstaking planning by a small gang of burglars who tunneled over 250 feet to the bank’s vault from a nearby property. The robbers used a landscaping business as a front for their operation, an ingenious cover that allowed them to move massive amounts of dirt and rock out of the tunnel without looking suspicious. The tunnel itself was expertly constructed, and was said to have sophisticated lighting and even an air conditioning system. After three months of digging, the thieves finally broke into the vault and made off with over 165 million in Brazilian reals, or $70 million dollars U.S. Since then, police have made a number of arrests in connection with the burglary, and recovered roughly $9 million dollars of the haul, but the majority of the suspects are still at large.
