I moved to the US almost 2 weeks ago to continue my undergraduate studies (I left a Nigerian public uni to continue it in a school here). I stayed in Ohio for a while with my friend and yesterday, we were both driving to Louisville, KY to go visit a family member. After about an hour 30 mins into the 4-hour drive, we saw a cop with blinking sirene behind signalling us to stop. My friend is quite notorious for overspeeding because the express is quite huge, scantly and free without any bumps whatsoever. So there were times we were going at 120KM/h which is nuts. But that time, the cop busted us because we were going 26 km/h over the 60km/h speed limit.

My friend pulled over sharply, and the cop stopped behind us. The cop was a young white male in his early 30s. Then he came to us and calmly asked how we were doing. Then he told us that we were moving too fast, way above the speed limit. But the way he said it nicely, I was thinking it was just a warning. He then asked for a couple of information from my friend (the driver) and gave him a ticket. Now to move, the car didn't start. My friend started the car but it didn't even enter ignition. Then the cop came over asking what was happening. We explained to him and he suggested nicely that he'll use his battery to jump-start our car. I looked over at my friend like WHAAT? Cop? Omo this can't be real. Naija cops no fit do this oh. Plus he was so nice. At some point, he was even like if he knew our car was going to break down after stopping us, he wouldn't have stopped us at all. I was like is this how abroad police are nice? It was insane. I just couldn't wrap my head around a police officer doing that.

This man stayed with us for at least an hour trying to get the battery to charge. But at some point, the engine started to smoke and we figured the problem was more than the battery. The police officer then suggested that he call a toll truck and drive us to the nearest village so we get an inn to stay the night because we were literally in the middle of nowhere. He was like, "... you could do that. I'll give you guys some time to think of a game plan and then I'll be back to know what you decide." My head burst oh. Call toll truck, drive us to the nearest village? It was like I was in a movie. How can a police officer try to help us that way. I couldn't relate. Naija police go don bust you. Plus you get car and Iphone. Omo you gatz be yahoo be that.

At the end of the day, he radioed his colleagues to call a toll truck nearby and once they were there, they just took the car and gave us their contact card. Since they had a mechanic shop in their company, we decided to use them. We didn't pay them shishi on that spot. They just took the car. Of course we are going to pay all costs but it just shows how the system here works. This couldn't remotely happen in Nigeria. If you try it, you use your car do give away be that. It's gone because you can't trust anybody.

The police then took us to a nearby inn. Thinking that was where he was just going to drop us when we got there, I was shocked when he followed us inside. You won't believe that after we asked for the cost of a night and were about to pay, the policeman said we should not worry and that he'll pay. The cost was $118 (with tax). This man paid oh. That's a freaking N84,600 going by current exchange rates. I could not believe it. Nigerian police officers will take from you. They can't possibly give you anything, talk about giving your over 80K. I don't think there's any single Nigerian police officer that can do that sorry. I was shocked at how a police officer could do that.

My friend and I are still stuck on the road but hopefully, we'll get the car fixed and be on our way. It was an insane experience. Still can't believe such a thing was possible on planet earth.
