Education / What You Need To Do After Jamb Result Is Out [must Read] by DANO1011(m): 7:10am On Mar 21, 2016
Hello Jambites, you definitely have to know that there is a life after Jamb and your released result whether you passed in flying colours or not. As you all know that your pre-requisite into the University in Nigeria is the Joint Admission Matriculation Examination, hence the need for the examination.
THE Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) 2015/2016 Examination has been scheduled to commence on February 27, 2016. While some people have written the examination and seen the result, others are still preparing for theirs.
Our focus in this publication is to help students on what to do and what not after they have seen their 2016 result.
Education here in Nigeria is extremely crucial and as a result students at all cost try everything within their capacity and capability to get into school either due to peer pressure or pressure from parents, it’s very important to understand that you have to do things right in other to secure your place in the merit list of universities. You don’t want to wait until next year.
After your UTME, the next step is the examination known as the Post-UTME. Now, this is where you have to get it all right if your score in JAMB is not as high as expected. Annually, the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board releases the cut-off mark for getting into the Universities and it is mostly placed around the 180 mark. Although most universities obey this, it has become a custom for top most universities in Nigeria to peg theirs around 200.
Hence, the need to get way up above the 200 mark so as to make you one step into the university. For your POST-UTME, you have to find out what the cut-off mark for your chosen school is. Most of you whose school is outside their state have to either make calls or visit these schools to know what is going on as regards the POST-UTME.
Although universities have online platforms where they update prospective students with information as regards the date of the upcoming examination, it is just very expedient that you as a student should visit the school in question to get first-hand information as regards whatever you need to know.
Moreover, especially the students that have to travel miles, to other states to write the POST-UTME exams, you should visit your school few weeks before the exam to get acquainted with the school and it’s environs. Sometimes, as it were in the case of my days, you have to stay over in the school after your examination (on the day you write it) as you might be slated for morning or noon or a lil bit into evening depending on the amount of students writing the particular course or examination whatsoever.
Hence, the idea of visiting the school is to try and make friends with a trustworthy individual that might help you with accommodation to cover your stay for the few days you’ll be staying or till the next day after you are done with your examination and can’t travel back to your home or destination ( where you came from). You are saving yourself so much money that you’d have spent on accommodation for the few days.
Also, it’s a very rich experience to get a view of the school you want to get into. Not only will you feel fulfilled from the sights and scenarios of a university, you’d definitely be updated as to how and what the university life is all about, you’ll be inspired to want to do more in terms of studying smarter and harder for the exams in question, the one you are preparing for.
In addition, sought for POST-UTME past questions. Questions don’t fall from heaven, it is recreated out of the already had questions. Even some of the POST-UTME questions are gotten from the JAMB examination questions. Try every best possible to work on questions you find, even if it requires you to register in a tutorial center. To those who had few scores above 200, you need to buckle up for your POST-UTME especially as it is a decider.
These tutorial centres are updated and vast as regards POST-UTME hence the need to get yourself into a well grounded one. Not only will you be taught what to do and what not, they’ll provide you with ideas as to how to write the exam. This exam is a little bit different from the JAMB and requires a little bit more of intelligence and smartness. JAMB is the mile, POST-UTME is the extra-mile.
Also, make sure you have every print-outs you are supposed to have if possible a week before your examination. This tactic keep your mind at rest and help your concentrate on other related issues. And make sure you have them kept in a safe enclosure after multiple photocopies have been made.
God forbid, in case of an unexpected circumstance where you lose the printout, your already made photocopy perhaps will save the day.
Before the D-day of your POST-UTME exams, you have to check and uncheck. Put things that are needed to be in place, and check for things that you are missing. Make sure the materials you need for your movement and examination is in place.
On the day of your exam, say a word of prayer and believe (although it is advised to cultivate this habit all the time), dress properly, be of good behaviour, have your writing materials and POST-UTME printouts with you only. DO NOT carry a bag as you wouldn’t be allowed into the examination premises with it. It’s either you drop it somewhere of which the security is unsafe or something else. You do not want to lose your belongings due to ignorance.
Take the aforementioned advice and publication into consideration and be sure to have a fabulous result, as well as a place in your chosen university! Have a great and fulfilling career.

Health / 10 Things You Didn't Know About Coffee! by DANO1011(m): 7:27am On Mar 16, 2016
1. Coffee is the No. 1 source of antioxidants! New research has shown that coffee is a rich source of antioxidants, and contributes significantly to your daily total antioxidant intake. Antioxidants can help protect your cells from oxidation and your body from heart disease, cancer and premature aging!
2. Decaf has all same antioxidants! Whether you choose a caffeinated or decaffeinated blend, you will still get all the benefits of antioxidants since both contain similar content!
3. Coffee helps you learn better and stay more alert at work! Studies show that people who drink coffee are relaxed and more interested in their work. The caffeine in coffee helps restore and maintain alertness – improving performance and enhancing your mood. It is the perfect brew to get you through the second half of the working day! When studying, coffee helps improve attention and wakefulness, increasing attentiveness and by that it facilitates learning.
4. Coffee also enhances your physical performance! According to research, caffeine plays a role in providing energy for better physical performance. This could help athletes perform better at endurance exercises of short and long durations, as well as high intensity routines. It can also reduce post-workout muscle pain and feelings of fatigue during the last minutes of work-out.
5. Zero calories in every cup! 1 cup of soluble coffee (NESCAFE®) has less than 2 calories. In fact it is what you add to the coffee that adds calories. So remember to have your cup with less sugar and low fat milk or creamer!
6. Coffee can help protect your skin! Your skin is constantly exposed to harmful external factors such as UV light, which can affect the health of your cells and cause cell damage. But with the antioxidant-rich properties of coffee, you can help your skin fight the damaging effects of the sun and prevent wrinkles as well.
7. Coffee can help ease headaches! Research suggests that a cup of coffee could help relieve migraine symptoms and even stop it if consumed at the very early stage of a headache. This is because substances that dilate blood vessels cause vascular headaches. While substances like caffeine constrict blood vessels and help counter the painful effects of blood vessel dilation in your head.
8. Coffee does not interfere with calcium absorption! A popular misconception is that drinking coffee may lead to calcium loss from the body. However, recent evidence has shown that coffee has no negative effect on bone health. And of course, strong healthy bones are a result of a diet rich in calcium. Come to think of it, preparing your coffee with a full glass of milk will actually help you meet your needs in calcium.
9. You can drink 3-4 cups a day! For most coffee drinkers, the recommendation for moderate consumption is 300 mg of caffeine per day or the equivalent of 3-4 cups of soluble coffee.
10. Soluble coffee is 100% coffee! Soluble coffee is processed using pure coffee beans and water with no additives at all! It’s the selection of beans and the distinctive roasting process that provides its special aroma.
Drinking coffee is a great way to get together with family and friends! Sipping up, sharing conversations, it lifts our moods, relieves stress and enhances your performance in many ways! So the next time you’re looking for something to relax or cheer you up, reach out and experience the invigorating benefits of a refreshing cup of coffee!

Romance / Marriage And My Tradition: Taking A Wife In Hausa Land by DANO1011(m): 6:12pm On Mar 06, 2016
The Nikkah ‘the Islamic wedding’ is the process followed when taking a wife in the amongst the muslims in Hausa land. It has its unique way of practice and this distinguishes it from other forms of wedding practices all over the world. In recent times, the practice of Nikkah has tilted more towards a more cultural angle rather than its previous religious sacredness.

With the rise of westernization, people have generally adjusted the rulings to suite their convenience or desires.

In the Hausa culture of Nigeria, the typical practice is initiated when the family, close family friends of the groom (not necessarily including his parents), the to-be-groom’s guardian go to visit the family of the bride. It's an all men affair and that usually referred to as Na gani ina so which literally means ‘I like what I see’.

The groom’s family goes with a basket of a few things including fruits and kola nuts. This is for the acceptance or rejection by the bride’s father after which, according to tradition it is permissible for the man and the woman to ‘see’ each other.

The man and woman communicate with one another, share likes and dislikes basically, if the girl feels comfortable with marrying the man, she gives her consent. she communicates this to her parents who in turn activate the Gaisuwa meaning Greetings to their in-laws- to be. The Gaisuwa is a formal form of approval from the family of the bride to the groom's.

At this point however, the father of the bride can still withdraw his initial approval if issues arise that cannot be sorted out. If all goes well at this point, the relationship is committal and it is certain that the two will be marrying each other. It is also on this day, that the proper wedding dialogue begins and wedding date is agreed upon and chosen by a delegation of the two families. The setting of the date is called Sa rana.

The bride’s family goes home with some gifts for the bride referred to as Kai Kaya
meaning ‘Carrying Things’. Depending on the financial capability of the groom and his family, the items range from clothing, jewelleries, shoes, perfumes and many more.

Also, it is part of the Hausa culture for the groom to provide a house for the couple while the bride’s family has full responsibility of furnishing the house, especially her room, living room and the kitchen.

All these are done before the wedding proper. The wedding day is usually referred to as Fatihah . That is the day in which there is a solemnization of the two families and payment of sadaki the dowry.

Traditionally, the women folk aren’t expected at the wedding Fatihah and they usually never are present. Instead, the women are indoors busy at the Kunshi, preparing the bride for her final moment as a spinster and new beginnings as a wife. The kunshi is a ceremony just like a bridal shower where the older women apply generous amounts of perfume and scented flowers on the bride, lalei (henna) is applied on the arms and feet of the bride and her friends .

It serves as a form of decoration as flowers and other intriguing designs are drawn.
Depending on the families involved, a
Walimah ‘ wedding reception’ is held after the wedding Fatihah , it's a whole day’s ceremony, with food and drinks and merriment for family, friends and other well wishers.

After all has been said and done, the bride is taken to her husband’s house after series of admonishments from both parents, aunts, uncles and even her new parents-in-law. It's known as Kai Amarya and it means conveyance of the bride.

All in all, the Hausa Nikkah is usually a graceful and fun-filled ceremony with so many activities involved. For those of you non-Hausas looking to marry into this tribe, oh well! Start tightening your belts and scarves, cos’ it certainly is an adventurous journey to embark on! smiley

Due to reports by different jambites who wrote recently , jamb still didn't add any 40 additional marks for 2nd and 3rd march sets !
there's a high possibility that JAMB is only adding additional marks only for the 1st,2nd and 3rd sets due to technical problems they encounter during the exams.

Career / Re: Why Are There No Female Generals In The Nigerian Army? by DANO1011(m): 1:55pm On Feb 26, 2016
Kokolett:
All my life as a Nigerian I have never seen or heard about any female that attained the rank of a general, be it major general or lieutenant general.

I'm aware that there are many women in the force but have never heard about any female general. Is there a Nigerian law against women reaching that rank or is the usual glass ceiling in play? Does anyone know any female general or even colonel?
see when it comes to the milliatry , you should first take note of their type of recruitment :
1 REGULAR INTAKE
2 DSSC
4 SSC.
5 the Almighty cadet (RC)
the best way of gaining a generalship is to be recruited through the RC ( Regular combatants) which women were not allowed until 2010 when Godluck Jonathan was in power.
the first female RC graduated in NDA last year 2015 though the army latter stop the recruitment of females in NDA 2016 excluding Navy and air force .
