Hello Nuremac and Nairaland readers,

I sometimes feel so confused when I see NAFDAC number on some bottles that contains concoctions of questioned medical value and safety. I believe misunderstanding the causes, processes of producing symptoms, and possible ways to approach some diseases is making us to spend lot of money on drugs that no one can give a good explanation of how they can treat mentioned diseases. Years of medical research have shown that diseases can be clearly divided into medical and surgical with few that can be treated by both methods. Because there is no objective assessment of progress, coupled with analgesic effect of many of our traditional herbs, symptomatic relieve will be the re result of such treatment while the real pathology is still ongoing. This will leads to presentation at a terminal stage when very little can be done to tackle the real cause. Some of these drugs produce their effects at the detriment of other organs that may be severely damaged beyond refair.

I thus want to advise fellow Nigerians that is better to go and have a good understanding of any disease condition mentioned, and ask ourselves of how can oral drug treat intra-uterine neoplastic growth like Fibroid, before taking any drug. We need to find out how toxic are these drugs to other tissues of the body even if in reality they are effective.

If only NAFDAC is looking into all these, Nigeria would have been a safer place.

As a final year medical student in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, I decided to write my project on MENSTRUATION. I knew, from the cases we were seeing in ABUTH that women know very little of what they do monthly. Thus my project topic was MENSTRUATION: KNOWLEDGE ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.

The data I collected and subsequent statistical facts I generated from the data were shocking to even my supervisor"Dr S. H. Idris a consultant Community physician".

Only 6.63% of 347 students can correctly define menstruation! Women use all kind of things to manage menstrual blood. Am placing this in a public forum to remind our parents that is high time we started talking to our girls about the inevitable, teach them, educate them, and clear their doubts on issues related to menstruation.
