earthrealm:Why not run both the desulphator and the balancer concurrently on the bank? Is there any rule against that? I did just that for over a year when I was using Lead Acid batteries and it worked well. I had both the H02 balancer and Pulse desulphator hooked up on the same battery bank.

mank1234:Lithium batteries require only two stage charging algorithm; Constant Current (CC) and Constant Voltage (CV) charging. Set the Charge Controller to the maximum charge voltage for the battery pack in accordance to the battery chemistry and manufacturer's recommendation. This is the equivalent of Absorb Voltage in AGM/Flooded Batteries. It is advisable to use a value slightly lower than the max voltage in order to prolong the life of the battery. For instance, LiFePO4 chemistry has nominal value of 3.2v, minimum discharge is 2.5v and a maximum charge voltage of 3.65v per cell. A 12v pack usually comprise of 4cells in series to give 14.6v max and 10v minimum. So you have to set the Charge Controller absorb voltage to 14.6v. A slightly lower value of 14.2v will ensure that the pack is not fully charged, thereby prolonging the life of the battery exponentially. Most Lithium batteries can be charged at up to 1C during the CC phase until the max charge voltage is reached. The Charge Controller then enters the CV phase. The battery is considered fully charged when the charging current drops to about C/24 during the CV phase while maintaining the max charge voltage. Lithium batteries are very intolerant of over charge or over discharge. Incorporating a good BMS into the pack will manage the charging and discharging processes effectively. The BMS will ensure that none of the cells go above the maximum voltage or below the minimum voltage and also keep the cells voltages balanced. |

Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) batteries are already here I have used part of it to replace my AGM and Flooded Lead Acid batteries. I will have a small quantity to dispose off when we finish the project we imported them for.

mank1234: Barezzi:I have since learnt not to buy these so called high quality high-tech equipment where cheaper equivalents exist. The quality @Barezzi mentioned as reason to buy high priced brands translates into two factors; performance and longevity. Performance of top brands might be better than their Chinco equivalent on the surface but when you factor in price differentials the story might change. I most cases, performance difference is not more than 20% (where it exist) but price difference is in the order of 30-100%. On this point, one is therefore better off buying the cheaper Chinco version. Longevity on the other hand is also not a very good factor to consider when buying High-Tech gadgets. Today's state-of-the-art gadgets will be obsolete in one or two years. While the equipment might still work very well, the allure for improved performance and better features will force you to drop the equipment long before it's end of life. If I may ask, how many people are still using that expensive, durable Nokia 3310 we all bought back then? New technologies have since forced us to retire it despite the fact that it is still working perfectly well. One of the main limitation of Solar Panel deployment is space. I give you a practical example. More than ten years ago, I purchased and installed my first set of Solar Panels. They were 4units, 80W mono panel. Very expensive state-of-the-art panels for those days. Three years ago, I decide to upgrade because Solar panels have become cheaper, more efficient and smaller. I purchase 6units 300W Chinco (Roysolar) panels. Although my old panels were still working very well, I got rid of them because of space inefficiency and backward incompatibility. The space occupied by the old 320W panels is now sufficient to mount 900W of the new panels. Who knows what will be available in another 10years? Most of us in the forum will gladly get rid of our current "expensive" panel if a new technology suddenly appears that shrinks the size of the panel by half. This will allow for installation of more wattage on the same space. With my Chinco panels, I have harvested more than 10MWh and it is still going strong with an efficiency of over 4kwh/kw on a sunny day. How many people with the high priced panels have efficiencies that is better than that? If you are just venturing into renewable energy, I seriously recommend that you don't throw away your hard earned cash buying high-end products. You might just be paying for the name and durability that you don't need. Look out for equally good cheaper alternatives with the features you require. New innovations in technology will force you to replace it before their end-of-life. After all, we now live in a disposable world, as far as technology is concern. |
NiyiOmoIyunade:With 6.3KW array and 38kwh of battery storage, why are your water heater not on solar? Install timer switch on the water heaters and set them to run one after the other for 30 minutes each in the afternoon, preferably between 11am and 2pm. Once the water is boiled it is good for the next 24hours. I have a 4.5kw array, I run a borehole pump and four 20litre water heaters off it between 11am and 2:30pm. The last time I bought PHCN recharge was October, 2016 when I needed utility bill for banking purpose. |

It is about using a Potentiometer to measure Potential Difference (PD). The Potentiometer (POT) under reference in the thread is a three legged variable resistor that are used in circuits. That POT is either an adjustable voltage divider, variable resistor or rheostat and cannot be used to measure PD Resistors don't measure voltages, they rather limit current and create PD across it's terminals when current flows through. The PD across the POT can then be measured by a voltmeter or calculated from the formula V=IR. This is O'level physics. makavele:I am not a science student. I am a Physicist with 31years post graduate experience. You have probably not stated Primary School when I bagged my Physics degree. Have you seen anyplace where you can buy a Potentiometer off the shelf for measuring voltages? But voltmeters or multimeters are everywhere. So where is the preference. Before the advent of Field Effect transistors (FET), in laboratories where high precision is required, a circuit consisting of a POT, Galvanometer, known EMF source and an unknown EMF source is built in order to measure the EMF of the unknown source. It is the circuit that you are mixing up with the stand alone component POT. makavele:Since they started designing the input of Voltmeters with FETs, the accuracy/precision of voltmeters have sky rocketed. Nowadays, we have digital voltmeters with 99.999999% accuracy. So, Voltmeters are now much more accurate and sensitive than any potentiometer circuit. makavele:Once again, I will not degenerate to your level. I rest my case on this matter. |
makavele:What I stated is physics! A potentiometer inside a voltmeter is used as a variable resistor to calibrate the accuracy of the displayed value. That is one of the three uses of a potentiometer as stated in my earlier post. The fact remains that a potentiometer cannot and does not measure potential difference. It is essentially a resistor with a variable centre tap. There are many laymen in this forum, so it is important to give accurate information in order not to lead them astray. |
makavele:A potentiometer is not used for measuring potential difference, a voltmeter is used for that. A potentiometer is either an adjustable voltage divider, variable resistor or rheostat depending on how it's three legs are connected in the circuit. It can be used to adjust voltage setpoints upwards/downwards and also for accuracy calibration depending on the circuit design. |
babaegun:I can actually capture the data directly from the Midnite Classic CC via Modbus using Raspberry Pi without recourse to the Midnite website. I have not just gotten around to doing it. |

I am still searching for a way to automate the process. The classic 150 automatically upload the data to MyMidnite website every five minutes, I then download the CSV and upload to pvoutput website after sunset. Let me know if you find a way around. |

mank1234:For longevity, safety and extreme temperature (-20 to 55 deg Celcius), Lithium Titanate Oxide (LTO) battery is the best of the Lithium battery family. With cycle life >10,000cycles at 80% DOD, they can be fast charged from 0-90% in less than 10 minutes at 10C without thermal runaway. The only down side is that they are quite expensive. I have somethings off my sleeves concerning LTO batteries. I might have limited quantity to sale soon, being leftovers from a classified project. liquidcrystal73:Yes, it amount to the same power at the point of generation, that is, Panel end but different at the CC end due to cable loss. Parallel connections will result in higher current, lower voltage. The higher the current, the more the power lost in the cables Series connection will result in lower current, higher voltage thereby minimising the power lost in the cable. If you are not using appropriately rated cables for the installation, the cable loss can be very significant. |
damola1:Congrats on your acquisition of such highly rated batteries. Installation is not difficult, so you can do-it-yourself. For a nominal 24V setup, it is advisable that you use 8 of the batteries in series. I will also advise that you charge to 3.5v instead of 3.6v and discharge to 2.7v instead of 2.5v. This will greatly increase the cycle life of the batteries. You should also install a good quality BMS to protect the batteries against overcharge and over discharge. So, connect 8 batteries in series and set your charge controller to absorb voltage=28v, absorb time=1minute, float=28v. Also set the LVD of your inverter to 21.6v Since LiFePO4 batteries can delivery very high current when demanded (i.e short circuit), please endeavour to install appropriately rated DC circuit breaker on the battery. Make sure the BMS is capable of both High and Low Voltage Disconnect. Enjoy your investment. |

Barezzi:My charge controller has two auxiliary ports which can be configured to switch a relay on/off at preset battery voltages. I configured the Aux1 to switch on the relay powering the heavy loads DB when battery voltage hits 57.8V and switch off when battery voltage drops to 52.6V. This way, the opportunistic loads cannot drain my batteries even in bad weather. A programmable timer fires another relay at 4pm and switch the heavy loads DB to PHCN. It also switch the DB back to the inverter at 8am. |

There must have been a huge power surge in my area overnight. I woke up this morning to discover my Midnite Solar Surge Protection Device MNSPD300 completely damaged. There are many marketers in this thread, so reference to "a marketer" does not uniquely identify anyone. The posts I made represent a succinct and true account of what transpired between the marketer and I. So where is the smear campaign in it?
