TOPIC: BEWARE OF PRIDE 1

MEMORISE:
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” – (Proverbs 16:18)

13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

MESSAGE:

In our Bible reading for today, you will see that God told Elijah to anoint three people to replace him. This is because you can see pride in Elijah's response when he says, "And I, even I only, am left...". There is only one "I AM" and that is God Himself (Exodus 3:14). This is why, when Jesus Christ called Himself 'I AM' in John 8:58-59, the Jews were furious that He compared Himself to God. Of course, at that time, they did not know about John 1:1 and 14, which says Jesus is God who became flesh and dwelt amongst us. The name I AM must be reserved for God and God alone.

When you search the Scriptures, you would discover that the words 'I', 'me', 'my', 'mine' are the languages of pride. That was the language of Satan in Isaiah 14:12-15. When you find someone always saying 'I', 'my', you know you are most likely dealing with a proud fellow. Beware of this because the higher you go, the greater the risk of you saying 'I', 'my', 'me' all the time.

We see an example in the strong and anointed man of God called Samson. In Judges 15:14-16, where the power of God came upon him and he killed thousands of soldiers with a jaw bone, he said, "With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men”. There was no, "Thank You, Lord" to the One who sent down the power; it was all about himself. Even when God had clearly restored his strength in Judges 16:25-28, when the enemies had caught him and plucked out his eyes and he wanted to pray just one more prayer before dying, what did he say?

And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. (Judges 16:28)

It was about him all the way. That is why, as strong and anointed as he was, he fell so low that he ended up blind and grinding corn for his enemies before dying with them.

KEY POINT:
Beware of pride because it can make you fall so low that your enemies would begin to rejoice over you.

TOPIC: WHILE MEN SLEPT III

MEMORISE:

5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

MESSAGE:
Death is likened to sleep in (1 Corinthians 15:51). In other words, a believer who is spiritually asleep is actually in a state of spiritual death. (1 Thessalonians 5:5-9) tells us clearly that we should stay awake spiritually, be watchful and sober. Matthew 24:42 says you must stay awake and be watchful, for you do not know what day your Lord is coming. Romans 13:11 encourages us that the Lord's coming is nearer now than when we first believed.

Some believers keep going in and out of spiritual sleep. They feel it is normal to be cold and hot. I pity such people because their end is not usually good. A good example of this is Samson, who slept and woke up a number of times but the last sleep put him into the hands of his enemies. You may have slept a few times before and woken up again; however, you had better stop because there is always the last time a man would sleep and wake up to find himself being tortured by the enemy. If you used to love God with all your heart, but recently, other things have been competing with Him in your heart, then you are sleeping. God is saying to you like He said to the Ephesus Church in Revelations 2:4-5, "Return to your first love". Ephesians 5:14 says if you awake, Christ will shine on you again.

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. (Ephesians 5:14)

Beloved, get back to your first love now. Put away those sins that easily beset you. Go for a retreat, look for fellowships with genuine believers, make a habit of spending quality time daily in prayers and Bible study. Jesus is ready to shine on you again if you are willing to wake up and get back to Him. He loves you and He is calling you back home. Don't let the devil or anyone else hinder you from going back to the One who loves you enough to die for your sins. When He shines on you, everything the devil stole during your time of slumber shall be restored and you will become a better person at the end of the day.

ACTION POINT:
Spiritual sleep is likened to spiritual death. Go back to your first love before it is too late.

MESSAGE:

You are in a state of spiritual sleep when you profess to love God with your mouth, but your heart is far from Him. You are sleeping spiritually when you are no longer excited to spend time with the One you call your Father. David prayed to God to restore unto him the joy of his salvation. This means he had lost the joy he used to feel as a child of God (Psalm 51:2). When material things become more important than the spiritual, when you believe natural laws more than the word of God, then you are sleeping spiritually. I believe God that you will awake from every spiritual slumber today, in Jesus' name.

For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. (Isaiah 29:10)

When you see someone who keeps trying to cope with a problem instead of praying, it means he or she is already sleeping spiritually because the fellow cannot see what the devil is doing. If you make a decision when you are spiritually asleep, that decision is likely to be wrong because you would be spiritually blind. Before you decide on whom to marry or enter into a business venture with, make sure you are spiritually alert. When you sleep spiritually, you cannot discern spirits correctly. You would believe any false prophet who says things that appeal to you; you would embrace a wolf in sheep's clothing and hand over your pearls to pigs.

A leader in the Church cannot afford to sleep spiritually because the devil can attack the people under his or her leadership and God says their blood would be on that leader's head (Ezekiel 33:6-7). Therefore, if you are a leader in the house of God, more than anyone else, you must be spiritually alert. God forbid someone dies and goes to spend eternity in hell because of your spiritual negligence.

PRAYER POINT:
Father, awaken me from every spiritual sleep today, in Jesus' name.

When we attended Primary Primary School, most schools closed around
1 pm to 2pm.
Fathers were busy on 9-5 jobs
Most mothers were full time housewives or having their trades either in shops not too distant from the house or attached to their houses.

Many children went home after being properly drilled by teachers,able to their own Homework by themselves or got the assistance of older siblings,uncles, cousins,nieces or nephews.
That was in the 60s, 70s and early 80s.
Children rested well after school, played and also studied under some form of informal supervision. Those mothers asked for moderate homework for their children.

They were more present parents and when not present ,they relied on the whole village ,the people in the same compound to co raise their children. That came with it's pros and cons in terms of either genuine support or mild to horrible abuse of the child!

As we approached the mid and late 80s we witnessed the emergence of another generation of parents, especially mothers.
Super amazons who were more graduates than we had in the earlier decades.. now more mothers had to join the 9-5 work regime with their husbands. All closing by 4pm and working far from home and the school which their children attended.

Then came a torrent of requests to schools from this new crop of mothers , they were asking the school to keep their children for longer than 2pm ,infact some wanted the school to keep them till 6 pm when they would have closed from work.
With that came extra lessons, extra extra lessons and loads of homework.

The mothers got angry if teachers did not load the children up with more than enough homework daily and for weekends too.
They must have enough that will occupy them ,mothers too have to rest! Keeping the children busy is a must for these mothers.
In all of this , the schools asked to be incentivised in extra fees and mothers who were not working moms in terms of 9-5 were either coerced howbeit in a subtle manner to also pay for the extra extra lessons!
So that category of mothers who could easily take their children from school by 2pm began to either indulge themselves, dumping their children in those extra extra lessons instead of filling that gap at home until schools made those extra lessons mandatory for all learners.

Today, it is obvious who the real victims are in all of this challenging developments.

The real victims are those hapless children who have lost quality rest time , quality bonding time with parents and are under heavy performance pressure from parents and teachers!

Some respond in becoming irritable , easily distracted , absent minded and some even becoming deviant !

Children wake up by 5am , leave home by 6: 40 am , get home by 4:30 - 5 pm ,tired ,worn out eat , sit down to face their load of homework.
Home lesson teachers continue from where the school extra ,extra lesson teachers stopped! I pity the Nigerian child.

Now it is difficult to reverse all of the above because of the realities of our social economic environment but can we begin to ask questions and brainstorm on how we can ease this burden on our little ones ?

The boarding schools came to the rescue,while some are excellent, many are mere remand homes masquerading as boarding schools.

Full housewives are also enjoying the indulgence or coercion of keeping their children in the extra ,extra lessons!

How do we begin to address the very sweet opportunity of incentive by way of lesson fees to school and teachers?

Oyo state government has filed an appeal challenging the court ruling which invalidated the selection and installation of Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye as the Soun of Ogbomosoland.

Also an application for stay of execution pending the hearing and determination of the Appeal Defendants/Applicants against the judgment at the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Judicial Division has also been filed at the High court.

The application is also seeking for an order from the court restraining the Claimant/Respondent by himself or through his servants, agents, privies or otherwise howsoever prevent him from taking any step or further step in recognition or in pursuance of the Judgment of this Honourable Court, Coram: Honourable Justice K. A. Adedokun delivered on the 25th day of October, 2023 in Suit No: HOG/27/2022 BETWEEN: PRINCE MUHAMMED KABIR OLAOYE V. EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF OYO STATE & 11 ORS. in executing the ruling.

Justice K.A Adedokun had on 25th october in his judgment on suit no HOG/27/2023 between Prince Muhammed Kabir Olaoye Vs The Governor of Oyo State and 11 others said that the procedure for the nomination of the Soun of Ogbomoso the 12th Defendant was “ irregular, null and void.’’ for not strictly complying with the provisions of the Soun Chieftaincy declaration of 1958.

The same judge had in a suit no HOG/20/2023 instituted by Prince Taofeeq Akorede Olaoye also challenging Oba Olaoye in which the judgment was delivered on October 3, Justice Kareem Adeyimika Adedokun ruled that the procedure was “right, valid and proper.”

Dissatisfied with the judgment, the appeal filed by Akin Onigbinde SAN and Co in Ibadan on behalf of the Executive Governor of Oyo state, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde, Attorney General and Hon Commissioner of Justice, Oyo state and Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy matter.

The notice of appeal dated 27th october is seeking for an order setting aside the Judgment of the Trial Court of 25th October or an order of re-trial before another judge of the Oyo State High Court.

The six ground of appeal pointed out how the Trial Judge erred in his submission and how the judgment of 25th October, 2023 is against the weight of evidence before the Honourable Court.

The respondents includes , Prince Mohammed Kabir Olaoye, Ogbomoso North Local Government Kinnira, Ogbomoso, the Traditional Council of Ogbomoso North Kinnira, Ogbomoso, S. A. Mohammed, Esq.

Before Abuja, there was Lagos as our Federal Capital. And this is where I would want to believe that there is something about our North and Federal Capital Territories. Before independence and immediately after independence, Lagos had a succession of two ministers of Lagos Affairs, both were northerners. One was Alhaji Musa Yar'Adua, father of the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. There was also Muhammadu Ribadu, grandfather of our immediate past First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari. Years later, Nigeria moved to Abuja and a long line of FCT ministers was recorded for the North. Now, some of the power elite from the north are said to be bellyaching over a southerner currently holding the steering wheel of Abuja, Lagos' successor as the Federal Capital Territory. Leading the ground troops is fiery cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi. He and his army of angry purists are not happy with Nyesom Wike's presence as minister and with his ways in the FCT.

Juju musician, Ebenezer Obey, sings in one of his records that there is nothing new under the sun (Kò s'oun tuntun l'ábé òrun mó...). There is nothing the current FCT minister, Wike, is doing in Abuja today that was not done in Lagos of the first republic by Minister Ribadu in his days as Lagos Affairs Minister. Ribadu and Wike are more than two generations apart but if you ask 18th century Irish writer, poet and lyricist, Thomas Moore, to study the two and describe his findings in a poetic phrase, he would likely say he discovered a pair of kindred spirits. Guts for guts, tongue for tongue, their adjectival numerals would be six and half a dozen. Wike can talk and do anything; Ribadu could talk and do anything. He did what he had to do in Lagos before he was moved to the Ministry of Defence, then he died suddenly on May 1, 1965 at the age of 55. This is what Ribadu's biographer wrote on him and how he ran the affairs of Lagos: "Before going over to Defence, Ribadu held the post of Minister of Lagos Affairs where he was so effective for his admirable performance. He was in charge when the city was being rebuilt. He had several decisions not being implemented because of the opposition of some people to move out of their places of abode to new sites given them by the government after they had collected their compensations... (They) refused to move out in spite of constant reminders. One morning, he visited the area and to the surprise of the Power of Powers (Ribadu's nickname), instead of those people to come and plead, they shouted at 'Gambari'. He parked his car and sent a message for a tractor (a bulldozer) which he personally supervised (while it) pulled down buildings owned by those residents. From then, when Ribadu was seen, he was called 'Baba Eko' - the father of Lagos.

"A particular incident which made him more feared was the house of one feared babalawo or juju priest. Some prominent Lagosians who were good friends of Ribadu pleaded with him to skip that man's house for fear of serious consequences befalling him, but he ignored them. The chief priest himself visited Ribadu's quarters pouring some powder, and three times, deposited chained chickens, goat and even a ram. On Ribadu's order, his houseboys made feasts whenever these were brought in. Finally, he went to the (juju man's) house the day it was to be broken down. Today, the place is occupied by a multi-storey building housing several offices. This, indeed, was the man Ribadu. Contrary to what the Babalawo and his friends believed, not even a headache troubled the indefatigable Ribadu. Had he not put his feet firmly on the ground, probably we could not have done any development in Lagos as it is today" (see page 21-22 of 'The Power of Powers: A biography of the Late Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu' by Sidi H. Ali).

There are speculations about errant churches and mosques being threatened by Wike's bulldozers. Mosques are sacred; churches are sacred. But Islam and Christianity are against persons who disdain the law and break it with impunity. The two religions have special hell fires for law breakers. If a mosque or a church finds itself running foul of the law, should it not willingly pay the price? A priest's house was caught by the law in Lagos in the early sixties, Muhammadu Ribadu, the minister of Lagos Affairs, pulled down the sacred house. I do not think Wike would be doing anything new or strange if he also moves against sacred structures that offend the law.

Sheikh Gumi and his supporters spoke on the ownership status of Abuja. The sheikh has not stopped being in the news since then. (Apologies to Justice Victor Ovie Whisky and his Verdict '83), the Supreme Court and its Verdict '23 of last Thursday hasn't stopped Gumi from trending. Nor has the ghastly parting gift of filth and odium from Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad who declared that our judiciary had "become something else." Gumi said some things that were as weighty as heavy. He spoke about Abuja and its ownership. He spoke on who was qualified to wield power there and who was not. He called the FCT minister "a satanic person" who should never have occupied a space reserved for Abuja, a city of saints. Gumi said “The Minister of the FCT is a satanic person; I said it before when he was appointed and some people were grumbling." The sheikh said other things and it was from him that I learnt that nepotism has tribe and it is better in some than in others. Gumi said "Yet they kept blabbing about Buhari's so-called nepotism. There was an element of nepotism under Buhari, I reckon. But our (northern Muslim) nepotism is not evil because it does no harm to anyone. If it cannot promote your interest, it won't harm it either; here is the difference. That's why I keep warning that power should not slip from our hands into theirs. Look how they took over all juicy and lucrative positions in the country. And they believe they'll continue to govern us in the next four years and beyond. They think through their tricks they'll get re-elected for another four-year term to make eight years in power. But that will not happen while we're here by the will of God. Their ultimate goal is to impoverish the North..."

I asked questions and I was told Bola Tinubu's choice of a southerner as FCT minister is heresy to the powers in the North. They think Abuja is the North's property and a northerner must be in charge there in perpetuity.

But, shall we ask who really owns Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory? General Murtala Muhammed, the Kano man who created it, asked and answered that question at the very beginning. In his February 3, 1976 broadcast announcing that area as our new Federal Capital, he said it would "belong to all Nigerians" of all tribes and tongues. Here, I think I should quote him copiously: "The area is not within the control of any of the major ethnic groups in the country. We believe that the new capital created on such virgin lands as suggested will be for all Nigerians a symbol of their oneness and unity. The Federal Territory will belong to all Nigerians. The few local inhabitants in the area who need to be moved out of the territory for planning purposes will be resettled outside the area in places of their choice at government expense." But, until Tinubu's appointment of Wike to man that space, Abuja had been ruled as northern Nigeria's 20th state to the shame of its history and the promise that birthed it.

Why did Nigeria build a new Federal Capital? And why the name Abuja? Linguistic historians say 'Abuja' is a combination of two lexical items: one is the name of the historical person who founded that emirate, the other an adjective: Abu+ja; ja is the Hausa word for red or fair in colour, while Abu is the shortened form of Abubakar. If I would translate 'Abuja' to Yoruba, it would be 'Abú pupa.' Two researchers, Julius Unumen and Adewale Adepoju, quoting several credible sources, give insights into this in a seminal article with the title: 'Lessons of History for Planning and Development in Nigeria: The Example of the Contrast between Lagos and Abuja', published in the January 2019 edition of the African Research Review, number 53. According to them, the old Abuja was named after its founder, Abubakar (Abu) Makau, who was said to be 'red' (fair) in complexion. When, in 1976, Nigeria chose that site as its new capital, it gave it no name - it was just FCT. But by 1978, it had become absurd that a country's federal capital would be without a name. A committee was asked to recommend a name; it suggested Gurara (after River Gurara). The recommendation was rejected by the government which decided to snatch the name of the nearby Abuja emirate that contributed 80 percent of the FCT land. Would the Federal Capital Territory then be sharing a name with an emirate? The Olusegun Obasanjo military government said no, the virgin FCT must not be betrothed to any 'tribe or tongue'. The government proceeded to force the then reigning emir of Abuja, Alhaji Suleiman Bara, to drop the name of his domain and coin a new one. The new one is today's Suleja (Sule + ja) - the Sule in the name being coined from 'Suleiman' the fair complexioned emir. Now, why did Nigeria build a new Federal Capital?

In a 1984 article, Jonathan Moore of the Centre for International Affairs at Harvard University, United States, noted that "the removal of the seat of government from Lagos was a volatile issue throughout the period of British rule." Lord Lugard and his successor, Hugh Clifford, clashed over it. Before Lugard, there was Sir Ralph Moore who was the High Commissioner of the Niger Coast Protectorate and Sir Henry Edward McCallum, Governor of Lagos (1897-1899). Both grappled with the location issue. Indeed, Moore continues, "each administrator who followed Clifford until Nigeria's independence had to deal with the exigencies of the capital's location." Before and after independence, the issue of where the capital should be was one of the potent threats to the unity of the country. The Action Group and its leadership clashed several times with the NCNC and its Northern Peoples Congress over Lagos and where it should be. The war over Lagos and its status was a back and forth struggle. The matter remained alive throughout the first republic and in the life of the succeeding military governments. There were concerns of inadequate infrastructure, lack of land for expansion and what the system called "the dominance of a single tribe" in Lagos. (see 'The Political History of Nigeria's New Capital' by Jonathan Moore in the Journal of Modern African Studies, 22, 1 (1984) page 167-175).

The fate of Lagos as the capital was finally decided by the Murtala-Obasanjo regime in February 1976. It felt Nigeria needed a new capital city and went for it. On August 7, 1975, less than three months after he took over, General Murtala Mohammed set up the Justice Akinola Aguda Panel and charged it with the duty of locating a suitable place as the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. On the Aguda panel were Chief E.E. Nsefik, Dr. Tai Solarin, Professor O. K. Ogan, Alhaji Muhammed Musa Isma, Chief Owen Fiebai, Dr. Ajato Candonu and Colonel Monsignor Pedro Martins.

The Aguda panel submitted its report in December 1975 recommending that: "1. The city of Lagos is incapable of functioning as both a federal capital and state capital, due to the problem of inadequate land space for development commensurate with its status as the capital of Nigeria. 2. Lagos is identified with predominantly one ethnic group, and a new capital is needed in a location that would provide equal access to Nigeria’s great diversity of cultural groups. 3. A new capital is desirable that would be secure, ethnically neutral, centrally accessible, comfortable and healthful, and possess adequate land and natural resources to provide a promising base for urban development. 4. A new capital is needed as a symbol of Nigeria’s aspirations for unity and greatness" (see page XII of Akinola Arabambi's 'A critique of the Planning of Abuja, The New Federal Capital of Nigeria', an unpublished thesis submitted to the California Polytechnic State University in October 1980).

The Murtala Mohammed government accepted the recommendations and on February 5, 1976, it promulgated Decree 6 giving legal teeth to its white paper on the Aguda panel's report. The law carved out 8,000 square kilometers from states in an area in the Middle Belt part of Nigeria. It stated that "as from the promulgation of the decree (the FCT land) ceases to be portion of the states concerned and would henceforth be governed and administered by or under the control of the Federal Government of Nigeria. No other person or authority was permitted to continue to exercise control over the entire area of the new Federal Capital Territory besides the Federal Government of Nigeria. Similarly, ownership of the lands comprised in the territory was vested in the Federal Government of Nigeria," (see Unumen and Adepoju, 2019: 54). That law and all assurances given by Murtala Mohammed and the safety valves subsequently put in place by the succeeding military government of Obasanjo were wantonly subverted by the contradiction called Nigeria.

Abuja has had sixteen substantive ministers, fifteen of them came from the North. The exception is the incumbent. When you consider the pan-Nigerian character of the Aguda panel, the patriotic tone of its terms of reference and the nationalist innocence of its recommendations, you would feel sad at the great betrayal that Abuja has turned out to become. You would be ashamed of those who today think Abuja is their inheritance. It is on record that Dr Akinola Aguda, jurist without blemish, died regretting doing the duty of getting Abuja for Nigeria as Federal Capital. He lived to see a succession of governments at the federal level as they worked very hard to make Abuja another northern city/state. Aguda died 22 years ago but not before he wrote a piece for The Guardian with the title: 'My Regret about Abuja'. Dr Aguda's son, Olumuyiwa, an oba in Akureland, Ondo State, reinforced his dad's feeling of being used for parochial causes. In an interview published by the New Telegraph newspaper two months ago, the younger Aguda said his father was disappointed that "Abuja became more like (the) capital of the North."

Nigeria is built on a foundation of subversion of all things noble, and of iniquity and unfairness. But, I think on Abuja, a needle has fallen off the leper's hands. With Wike's appointment, a jinx of insults is broken. Today, the FCT belongs to all of Nigeria; it is no longer somebody's inheritance. God is great.

Minister of Budget and National Economic Planning Abubakar Atiku Bagudu said last week Thursday that Nigeria is so stone-broke, so impotently bankrupt it’s barely surviving. “There is no money anywhere in the country,” he said. “The government is just managing to pay salaries.” Oh really? Is the government also “managing” to fund the loud, in-your-face, insensitive hedonism of people in power?

Being “broke” is a boringly familiar refrain of APC governments. Type “Nigeria is broke” on Google, and you’ll find matches for it from at least 2016. Maybe PDP governments also made similar claims in the past, but my admittedly perfunctory Google search didn’t throw up any results. It doesn’t matter, though, because there are no political parties in Nigeria. There are only elites who are in power and elites who are out of power.

Lamentations about being “broke” while engaging in callously conspicuous consumption reminds me of a social media meme that trended a while ago in the United States. It’s called “not broke but broque.” “Broke,” we all know, is the informal term for being strapped for cash. “Broque,” on the other hand, is a playful lexical and semantic contortion of “broke.”

Also called “bougie broke,” broque means being heedlessly lavish and showy in expenditures while claiming to be cash-strapped. In other words, it’s reckless profligacy and financial irresponsibility amid privation. Applied to Nigeria, it’s the exponential rise in multiple subsidies for fat cats in and out of government amid an ostensible financial crunch.

It recalls my favorite Mahatma Ghandhi aphorism: “There is enough for everybody's need and not for everybody's greed.” Nigeria isn’t “broke” because of the need of everyday citizens; it’s “broke” because of the greed of the political elites. There is enough for everyone’s needs but there isn’t—and there won’t ever be— enough for the endlessly insatiable greed of the political elites and their underlings.

When government officials say Nigeria is “broke,” they often only mean that the finances of the nation have dwindled down to the point that meeting basic, age-old governmental obligations like paying starvation wages to workers is threatening to cause them to give up an inch of the extortionate indulgences they habitually luxuriate in.

If paying the miserly N30,000 a month to the federal minimum wage worker might lead to a little dip in the funds that finance the epicurean pleasures of people in government and their cronies, then Nigeria is “broke.”

For example, although every member of the Federal House of Representatives will get a car worth N160 million this year, the House voted Wednesday to defeat Edo State Rep. Anamero Dekeri’s motion on the “Need to compel JAMB, WAEC and NECO examination bodies to register students for free in the 2023-2024 examination exercise,” presumably because Nigeria is too “broke” to afford to fund the education of its youth who have the misfortune to be sired by poor parents.

And, although Nigeria is barely paying salaries and is too poor to fund fuel subsidies (about the only benefit poor people derived from the government), N57.6 billion will be spent this year to buy foreign luxury cars for legislators.

The Chairman of the Committee on Senate Services by the name of Sunday Karimi told newsmen on Tuesday that the price tag for the vehicles is steep because they are foreign, not locally manufactured cars, which are needed because of their reliability and durability. “These vehicles that you see [referring to their current cars that need to be replaced], go to Nigeria roads today, If I go home once, my senatorial district, I come back spending a lot on my vehicles because our roads are bad,” he said.

Then he threw a challenge to critics who are fixated on the luxuries of National Assembly members while ignoring the more extravagant opulence that members of the executive branch bask in. “We know ministers with more than three Land Cruisers, Prado, and other vehicles, and Nigerians are not asking them questions. Why us?” I think that’s a fair point.

In every budget, the Nigerian government allocates funds for the purchase of new, usually foreign, cars for people in the executive branch. I’ve always wondered what happens to the one-year-old cars that are replaced every year. Where do they go? Who gets them? No country in the rich, industrialized world buys new cars for government officials every year. But a perpetually “broke” country does.

Recall, too, that Nigeria has one of the world’s most expensive presidential air fleets. No one seems to know for certain how many aircraft we have in the presidential fleet, but estimates range from 10 to 7. After our unceasing reminders to Buhari— in the early days of his first term— of his promise to sell off the aircraft in the fleet, he lied to the world that he had sold two. He lied to repel continual public scrutiny.

Most importantly, though, a November 17, 2015, statement from the Buhari administration admitted that it cost the nation $15 million to maintain the presidential air fleet in just six months. That was how much it cost the British government to buy a dedicated plane for the British Prime Minister and the British Royal family in 2015.

Spending $30 million a year to maintain a presidential air fleet (if that cost hasn’t increased since then) is grossly offensive to basic decency for a country that interminably whines about being “broke” when it’s called upon to meet its obligation to its citizens. This is particularly unconscionable because presidential jets have now been converted to objects of transportational vanity by the family of the president.

Buhari inaugurated what, in a January 11, 2020, article I called the “Uberization and Keke NAPEPization of Presidential Jets.” In January 2020, it came to light that Buhari’s daughter, Hanan, paid a visit to Bauchi with the presidential jet "on a study tour... as part of her academic programme" at a London university where she was enrolled for a master's degree, according to Premium Times!

It also turned out that Hanan had actually used TWO presidential jets in the past to visit Kebbi State for her BA project on the Gwandu emirate. There was no precedent for that level of brazen abuse of the office of the president.

As I wrote at the time, “None of Obasanjo’s children ever used a presidential jet for personal vanity trips. We definitely never heard of any Yar’adua children using a presidential jet for private functions. And most people never even knew Jonathan had children. We barely heard of or saw them, and surely never ever read that any of them used a presidential jet without their dad in it.”

Tinubu has continued from where Buhari left off. His son, Seyi, flew on a presidential jet—and flaunted it—to watch a Polo game in Kano. Apparently, he has also turned our presidential jets to his Uber.

Also consider that although the Nigerian government always says it’s “broke,” it budgets billions of naira every year to feed the president and the vice president. In the United States, on the other hand, presidents pay for their own food from their pockets. As Gary Walters, a former White House Chief of Staff, told the (London) Guardian, “All those things that are personal in nature that we all pay for, the first family pays for.”

“It’s just the tradition that it’s continued on through time that the president will pay for their own food and, I guess, if they needed something for the house that was personal. Toothpaste, cologne or whatever,” William Bushong, a White House historian, told the Guardian.

“Nobody had told us that the president and his wife are charged for every meal, as well as for such incidentals as dry cleaning, toothpaste and other toiletries,” Ronald Reagan’s wife was reported to have said in 1981.

If Nigeria is truly “broke,” let it reflect this from the people in power. For starters, reduce the number of ministers to just 36. Cars for ministers and legislators should be replenished every four years, not every year, and should be locally manufactured.

I have more suggestions, but I know it’s wishful thinking to expect that the elite will change their ways. Nigerians are not even interested in demanding accountability from their oppressors. Why should the oppressors willingly give up their sinecure? Frederick Douglass was right when he said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

*SLEEP:* by way of definition is what happens to you when you close your eyes and intentionally relax your muscles by breathing deeply in and out until you go from conscious level to unconscious level and back to conscious level later. Sleep is accompanied by reduced mental and physical activity in which your consciousness is altered and sensitivity to your environment is reduced to a large extent.

There is something called a cycle of sleep. One cycle of sleep has 4 stages: First stage is called *FALLING ASLEEP* which lasts for 5-10 minutes. This is when you are trying to intiate sleep. This is followed by second stage called *LIGHT SLEEP* which lasts for an average of 10-30 minutes then followed by *DEEP SLEEP* which lasts for 20-40 minutes. It is during this deep sleep that our body repairs all the tissues that have damaged in our body and brain then this stage is followed by *PARALYSIS AND DREAM STAGE* which lasts for an average of 10-60 minutes. It is during this last stage that we dream. In total, one cycle of sleep lasts for an average of 90- 120 minutes. So when we sleep for 7-9 hours we go through this sleep cycle like 5 to 6 times at a stretch before we finally wake up back fully.

We are designed to share our daily 24 hours like this:
1. *WORK*: 8hours
2. *SLEEP*: 8hours
3. *OTHER AREAS OF LIFE:*(marriage, family, religion, career, education, socialization, friends, etc)

Many adults take the above formula for granted and cut some hours of sleep. Below is the implication of what you are doing to yourself 👇:

*As an adult, for every 1 hour of sleep you consistently cut out of these 7-9 hours of sleep you should have daily, if you are a man you are cutting your life span by 7 months overall, if you are a woman you are cutting your life span by 4 months overall. So if you cut 2 hours of sleep daily consistently out of that 7-9 hours, multiply the above overall reduction in your life span by 2.*

*6. Have a good rug on the floor because you may want to shift to the floor from the bed. Don't restrict yourself to bed alone. Have a couch inside your room where you can sleep sometimes.*

Marriage is, indeed, not a reward for good behavior, however, good behavior can guarantee finding a good partner and building a good home. The problem is that: there’s an over exaggeration of runs babes ending up with good men, as though good women don’t also end up with good men. This is a blatant lie. It’s the same way bad news spread easily. Good marriages have bad PR. Students with first class have bad PR. Have you noticed how in the Nigerian society, every form of excellence is usually minimized as not as rewarding?

They’ll say that school is a scam. They’ll give derisory examples of how first class students end up working for uneducated people. They’ll say good English doesn’t pay. It’s a constant stifling of excellence. But we know that in reality, going to school is an advantage. And people who taunt this narrative are usually people who failed in school. In reality, having a first class will place you above in some areas. Excellence pays. Moral excellence pays too.

A devout Christian woman, focused and purpose-driven will not settle with a randy man who sleeps around. People choose people with same or superior moral excellence. You can cite all outliers, but outliers are not the norm. A focused, disciplined and morally sound man would most likely not marry a woman who’s into RUNS, or a woman who post thirst traps, baring her body for public guzzling. Character attracts character, and character reflects values.

And in cases where you see men settle with such women who are obviously into RUNS and objectification of their bodies, those men are compensating with their own vices. It’s not usually an ideal solid marriage. While marriage is sacred, to some people, it’s just a contract. Just because you see married women twerking and sharing their sensual photos online, doesn’t mean they are happily married. They could be, but I do not believe that such marriages are biblically ideal. Same with women who marry unreasonable men, they know in many cases.

Some women know that their husbands are community joysticks, and into fraud, but faithfulness and legitimacy of income doesn’t matter to them. Now, is that an ideal marriage? Again, your marital choice is greatly contingent on character. Don’t be a good person because of marriage, but in most cases, you’ll need to be a good person to actually get a genuinely good partner and build a good marriage. Simple. Does it guarantee that the marriage will last?

I know some of you will bring up scenarios where these good men turn into cheats in marriage. Humans are fickle, but the man you married as a cheat is most likely to cheat than the other. This is the general truth, anything otherwise is an exception. It’ll be better to marry someone with a track record of moral excellence, than to start off with moral depravity. The chances that a lady sharing her body online would cheat on her husband is higher than that of a demure woman.

So please, stop parroting the narrative that good character doesn’t pay in marriage. It actually does. Marriage is too big. It’s more than just you, it’s also about the values you’ll teach your kids. Nobody wants to build a home with a woman who’s sensual photos is littered. No sensible woman wants the father of her kids to be an infamous morally depraved community penis or yahoo boy. Good behavior pays, and it trickles into marriage, greatly. You can pick the points or argue. I will be chilling away.

About 30 years ago, I slept at the Murtala Muhammed Airport for four days.

No, I was not a homeless vagabond.

I had bought the Nigeria Airways ticket to fly to the United States for a one-year sabbatical leave.

But when I arrived at the airport, I realized that my ticket was not honored, though I had bought it legitimately.

Whenever a plane was about to leave Lagos for New York, the NA officials posted a manifest list, and my name was not there.

They would ask me to wait for the next list.

This drama of “Your name is not yet listed, wait for the next manifest list” continued for four days.

I couldn’t leave the airport and return home because I lived in Ile Ife, and had bid my people goodbye for one year. They all expected I would be in NY already.

I was therefore forced to sleep by the door of the NA office at the airport, waiting for the release of the manifest list with my name on it.

I was not alone. There were hundreds of stranded passengers like me there—men, women, young, old, tall, short, thin fat—all sorts of people.

The Murtala Mohamed Airport was different then than what we have now.

There were no security officers. People drifted in and out in their hundreds. It was rowdy. There was no order of any sort. Food hawkers milled among the crowd of the stranded passengers like me, selling hot dogs, sandwiches, puff-puff, moin-moin, gala, meat pie, hamburgers, even rice and dodo.

People hawked sodas such as Cocacola, Fanta, Sprite and malt drinks.

The interior of the airport was packed like the Oyingbo market. There were also pickpockets and other fraudsters pulling fast tricks on unsuspecting victims.
I was hesitant to buy anything. I had changed all my naira to dollars at the rate of one dollar to three naira. But if I wanted to change my dollar back to naira, I could only collect one naira for my dollar at the airport, which would be a loss.

I was desperate when I got hungry. But someone was willing to give me two naira for a dollar, so I changed two dollars. I bought some moin-moin and coke.

The guys who helped me to change my money said I had no hope of traveling unless I was willing to bribe someone.

I was adamant. I wasn’t going to bribe anybody. It was my right to fly out, after all, I had paid for my ticket.

By day four, I lost hope of traveling out. I used my handbag as my pillow and reclined on the floor, to take a nap.

The young woman who slept a couple of feet away from me was also napping, snoring loudly. I asked her earlier, and she said she had been there for almost a week. She said she was ready at that point to accept the offer of a Nigeria Airways official who wanted sex in exchange for helping her to get on the manifest list.

For how long I had been asleep I couldn’t tell, when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I opened my eyes. It was Segun Odegbami, the famous international soccer star, who played for the Green Eagles. I thought I was dreaming. I had met him through a friend, Tunde Fagbenle, and we had shared drinks at Fagbenle’s house in Lagos a couple of times.

I couldn’t refer to him as my friend, and I didn’t even know he would recognize me or remember my name.

I was a fat nobody next to a big star like him, someone for whom Ebenezer Obey had waxed an album, with the chorus, “It is a gooooal, Odegbami,” a bestselling song throughout Nigeria.

When I opened my eyes and it was him, I wanted to close my eyes back, thinking I was just dreaming.

But he spoke to me. “Moyo, what are you doing on the floor here?”

I quickly sat up, wiped my eyes, and smile at him. I narrated my story.

He shook his head, and said with a sigh, “That’s Nigeria Airways for you. I came to see someone off to London, and as I was leaving I happened to see you.”

“Na so we see am o,” I told him.

“Where is your ticket?”

I dipped my hand inside the pocket of my agbada, made out of new Ankara textiles. It had double as my daywear and my pajamas for four days. I retrieved the ticket and gave it to him.

He said, “Excuse me for a minute. Let me go and talk with them.”

Then he went inside the Nigeria Airways office, and within minutes he was back, with two young men.

“Moyo, are you ready to go now,” Odegbemi said, “because a flight is leaving in about fifteen minutes.”

I didn’t need to say yes. My eyes said it all.

The two young men picked up my luggage.

Odegbami gave me a hug and wished me bon voyage.

The two young men led the way with my luggage—just a suitcase and my hand luggage.

They took me to the back of the airport, and there was a Peugeot 505 waiting for us.

They loaded my luggage in the boot and drove me down the tarmac to the huge aircraft about half a mile away.

From a persona non grata, I instantly transformed into a VIP, driven on the tarmac like a departing president.

Nobody checked my luggage for any contraband. Everything was loaded directly on the plane and I was given the luggage tags.

I walked to my seat and sank into it. I couldn’t help but notice that the plane was less than half full.

There were empty seats everywhere when the plane took off. Yet, there were scores of people waiting at the airport, denied their right to fly, after paying their fares.

I remembered the poor woman snoring next to me on the floor at the airport.

Tears began to fall from my eyes.

“If they ever see me again in that godforsaken country,” I swore silently, “they should cut off my head.”

One time, I used my wife’s photo as my WhatsApp profile picture. A little trick for whenever she is upset at me and I want to bribe her.

It works every time!

So, on this particular occasion, she was upset with me, and quickly, I changed my DP to her photo and posted her with some very romantic caption

Immediately she saw it, she smiled and then I asked her to accompany me to the mall close to the house so I can get her favorite snacks and drinks and add to the bribe

On our way back we stumbled upon a dry cleaning and laundry shop conveniently located behind our flat, and it became our go-to spot for washing and starching my office clothes.

During one visit, we realized we didn’t have physical cash with us, and the network was very sluggish that day

The owner had become familiar with us because we always go there together so my wife collected the owner’s number and assured him she’d send the money along with the receipt.

She was with my phone that day and so she saved his number on my phone, and when we got home, I messaged him and sent the receipt after the transfer

Later that night, he responded with a thank-you message and a kissing emoji.

I just smiled and showed my wife

He now asked if I’m home

I said yes

Then he asked if I’m alone

I said yes

He asked if I’ve eaten

I ignored him

Around 11pm he chatted me up and asked if he could call me on video call

I asked why

He said he just wants to see my face before he sleeps

I said okay he can call

He called and I picked

He was lying on the bed shirtless, me too I was on the bed, shirtless

As soon as he saw me, he shouted, Jesus and hung up

I and my wife had a good laugh

I tried calling him back, but he ignored my calls and eventually switched off his phone.

The next day, I went to his shop with more clothes and asked after him and the girl who works there said he traveled

It’s been two weeks and he has still not come back

Me, I am still waiting for the video call sha, in the meantime I’m still taking my clothes there and will continue to use their excellent laundry services because they wash my clothes very well

Tonight, I’ll call him video call again, that thing he wants to tell my wife, he must tell me, and this time around I’ll be naked.

TUESDAY FLAT OUT

The food you give to a slave is not to make him grow fat, but for him not to die (Oñje tí a ñfún erú, ki i se ki o baa sanra, ki o ma baa kú ni)! That was the closing remarks of Òsúntúndé, a character in the Yoruba epic drama, "Efunsetan Aniwura''. Òsúntúndé, one of the male slaves of Efunsetan Aniwura, the Iyalode of Ibadan, gives this line while discussing the parlous conditions of the slaves in the household of Efunsetan. Most of our leaders are just like Efunsetan Aniwura, or even worse than the legendary Iyalode of Ibadan, whose reign of terror and wickedness was terminated by Obadoke Latoosa Oyatoosa, simply, Aare Latoosa (c. 1820-1885). Latoosa, as the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Oyo Empire, had to rise to the occasion after Efunsetan, against all pleas, executed her female slave, Awero, who was put in the family way by one of the male slaves, Itawuyi. An attempt by Itawuyi to save his lover, Awero, also resulted in his death. That incident was the last Ibadan would take from a female overlord. Latoosa moved in and Iyalode was captured and made to sweep the Aare’s compound. Efunsetan died a sad woman on June 30, 1874. The entire Efunsetan’s reign of terror is recorded in the drama, “Efunsetan Aniwura”, written by the most prolific raconteur and literary icon, the late Professor Akinwumi Isola (December 24, 1939-February 17, 2018). Many have argued that Efunsetan was not as horrible as she is portrayed in the drama. Not a few believe till date that Iyalode Efunsetan was simply a victim of the “dominance of the phallus over the clitoris”. Interestingly, the playwright, Akinwumi, also agreed that if he had had access to the information he had later in life as against those available to him when he wrote the drama as an undergraduate (1968), he probably would have given a less notorious character portrait of the Ibadan strong woman. The arguments notwithstanding, the life of Iyalode Efunsetan Aniwura as depicted in the play, especially the miserable meals she served her slaves, mirrors how our present ruiners treat Nigerians, their conquered serfs.



There is a book “they did not want us to read.” That was how my late cousin and mentor, Ayegbusi Rufus Akanni (ARA), put it when he presented a copy to me as a gift, in 1989. The title is: “Just Before Dawn” (JBD), and the author is the inimitable writer, Kole Omotoso (Bankole Ajibabi Omotoso, April 21, 1943-July 19, 2023), who in his later domain, South Africa, was known as “Yebo Gogo Man”. JBD was not just a gift. I had instructions to read every episode of the narratives in the book and give a summary of each event according to my understanding. It was an order I carried out ‘compulsorily by force’! Why my late cousin decided to give me the book and asked for the tasking summaries, I cannot say. Needless, however, to say that I treasured the book, lent it out to so many people and had to rebind it when it was getting overused. Fortunately for me, I got a ‘new’ copy (obviously a pirated version) from a popular bookseller a few months ago. Omotoso’s JBD is the political Bible of Nigeria. In it, readers are given the ‘expo’ of how our rulers see the masses. On page 199, while introducing the politics of the Ibadan maverick political icon, the late Chief Adegoke Adelabu, aka, Penkelemes, Omotoso says “Adegoke Adelabu lived for the people.” Penkelemes gave a unique definition of the poor of the poor in Nigeria. He used the euphemism, “masses”, for them. To the man and his bombastic grammar, the masses “are known by their wants, distinguished by their disabilities and conspicuous by their incapacities.” Perfect definition! The First Republic politician knew that the poor must be saved from total annihilation by the serpentine rulers, and he had his own means of achieving that. Again, here is what Penkelemes said: “An overdose of doctrinaire socialism without a judicious admixture of progressive conservatism, of orthodox liberalism and of that centre-stabilizing process, leads inevitably to communism, to totalitarianism, to regimentation and to fanatical, ideological and doctrinal intolerance of opposition.” My Goodness! Forget the magniloquence and orotundity (I don’t want to copy the old lexicographer) of the dictions. No one can deny that for the Nigerian masses of today to be delivered from the knees of their leaders on their necks; they need exactly what Adelabu saw over 50 years ago! The poor Nigerians are on the crag. Their situation is iffy, a la Penkelemes.



Experts in the study of Standard Nigerian English (SNE) such as Ayo Bamgbose, Ayo Banjo, Festus Adesanoye, Andrew Thomas, David Jowitt, and many more, are united in their assertion that one of the basic features of SNE at the Lexico-Semantic level is “Semantic Shift or Extension”. This sociolinguistic term simply means that the semantic range (meanings) of a word can be restricted or narrowed and shifted or extended depending on the environment it is used (Contextualisation). When this is done, the hitherto original meaning of that word in its native First Language (L1) usage, assumes a different meaning in the Second Language (L2) situation. If there is anything that the locusts we have as leaders have contributed to the advancement of knowledge in the present political dispensation, it is the new meanings they have given to some lexicons that crept into the codification of SNE. When a man without teeth is given an Akara to eat, the tendency that it will turn to bone is high (Akara de enu akayin di eegun). A word that hitherto has simple and uncomplicated meaning, has assumed a different semantic interpretation in contemporary Nigeria. I am talking of the word “palliative”, which became even more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, but which gained prominence after the May 29, 2023, misadventure of President Bola Ahmed (Adekunle) Tinubu in announcing the removal of fuel subsidy without any plan to address the multiplier effects on the lives of the poor people. Desperate for a solution to the devil-may-care announcement, the government introduced what it called “palliative” to cushion the effects of the untold hardship Nigerians are subjected to. The first of such attempts was the now abandoned N8,000 per “vulnerable household” by the government. Following the outcry that greeted that venture, which not a few Nigerians regarded as a veiled scam, the government changed gear and announced that it would be giving each state the sum of N5,000,000, 000 to buy “palliatives” for the “vulnerable households” in the states across the federation. For a proper understanding of what those in government are doing to us, let us impose on ourselves here, a simple exercise in semantics to have a full grasp of the most abused word, “palliative”.



Shorter Oxford Dictionary (Sixth Edition) describes “palliative”, among other definitions, as: “A thing which gives superficial or temporary relief…” (Page 2079). On its part, Webster’s Universal Dictionary & Thesaurus defines it as: “Alleviating without curing” (Page 348). The International Webster’s Comprehensive of The English Language (Deluxe Encyclopedic Edition) describes it as “That which serves to palliate”, with the definition of “palliate” given as: “To relieve the symptom or effects of without curing…” (Page 909). Of all the definitions, the one I consider best as it relates to the current shenanigan of the government at pulling the wool over our faces is the definition by Cambridge Dictionary, which says “palliative” is “making a problem seem less serious but not solving the problem or making it disappear”. This is exactly the drama of the absurd Nigerians were made to behold on Saturday, October 14, 2023, when the Governor Dapo Abiodun government in Ogun State sent a 10kg bag of rice to the Shokeye Community Development Area (CDA), to be shared to the “vulnerable” households in the CDA. An unnamed man, who apparently is one of the leaders of the CDA, decided to call out the governor in a video, which has since gone viral. The man, who is the chief narrator in the video, displayed the branded 10kg bag of rice and asked how he was expected to share the rice to the “147 households in Shokeye Estate.” The livid resident noted: “In this estate, we have 147 houses with families and tenants. I'm confused now; I don't know how to share this with 147 households in Shokeye Estate. I'm talking to Dapo Abiodun now; if you people know that you cannot do something, then don't do it. We are not hungry; we are not beggars. So, we don't need your rice as palliative. This is not even up to one-eighth of a bag of rice. We don't need this rice; if you want to give us palliatives, don't insult us. This is an insult. Shokeye Estate refuses to be insulted." He advised the governor to return the rice to President Tinubu; that they should go and give it to their children.

Of course, sending a 10 kg bag of rice to an estate with 147 houses is nothing but ‘insult upon injury’ (what does that mean?)! Expectedly, the government came up with its predictable doltish explanation, the best of risible excuses anyone can offer! The usual culprit is the irritating cliché; “handiwork of the fifth columnist”. Lekan Adediran, the Chief Press secretary (CPS), to Governor Abiodun, while responding to the video, said that some agents of the opposition simply wanted to blackmail the governor. But he admitted that the government sent the wretched 10kg bag of rice to the CDA. Hear him: “This man is aware that the bag of rice is meant for one vulnerable family in the community, and not for all the residents. It was sent to him as the Chairman for onward transfer to a vulnerable widow in his community. But, instead of ensuring that it gets to the intended beneficiary, he chose to play politics with the palliative, exposing himself as the destructive opposition agent that he actually is…. He clearly got it wrong thinking that the government was ready to provide enough bags of rice that would go round every family in his community.” I want to believe that Adediran did not show the draft of his press statement to his principal before releasing it. What type of explanation is this? Did the government specify the particular “vulnerable widow” the rice was meant for? Or the CDA chairman was asked to use his discretion to identify the most “vulnerable widow” in an estate with 147 houses? How many such widows do we have in Shokeye Estate, for instance? How did Adediran and Governor Abiodun arrive at the conclusion that the “most vulnerable” person in Shokeye Estate, CDA, must be a widow? Are all widows poor, or are all vulnerable people widows?

The drama over the “government magic” called ‘palliative’ did not start with Governor Abiodun’s rice of poverty. While it is safe for Governor Abiodun to tag his Shokeye Estate CDA rice saga as handiwork of his political enemies, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State cannot say that with what happened on September 17, 2023, at Arigidi Akoko, where his Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Juliana Osadahun, was beaten to a pulp over the sharing of palliative in the locality. In the video of the event, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in one of the wards in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, Olumide Awolumate, was seen hitting the commissioner with a chair. Osadahun was badly injured and the party subsequently suspended Awolumate, a man whose name, when fully pronounced, says he is not disgraced when he enters the town because he knows his limits (Awolumate-iwon-ara-re-lo-mo).

As the APC ward Chairman, Awolumate was upset by the distribution formular for the ‘palliative’ rice sent to his domain, where the commissioner is the chairman of the committee set up to distribute the ‘palliative’. The ward APC chairman claimed that he was not included in the sharing formular, in addition to not knowing how many bags of rice came into his area. In 2020, during the outbreak of COVID-19, there were loaves of branded bread with the photographs of the current speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, being shared as “palliative” to ‘cushion’ the effects of the lockdown that was imposed during the pandemic. In some states, “the vulnerable” were given a sachet indomie each, and some quantity of gaari like the Efunsetan slaves who were fed to stay alive. During the October 2020 #EndSARS riots, many warehouses were attacked, and the “palliatives” stored up by politicians taken away freely by the hungry masses. Just recently, in Ibadan, a van conveying bags of rice was attacked by hungry and angry residents, who mistook the bags of rice to be part of the palliatives for the removal of fuel subsidy. Adamawa State also had its own share as residents invaded a warehouse and looted every item therein. There is anger in the land as hunger walks our streets in its stark unclothedness! When the two unpleasant situations agree to take a common stand, only the gods can tell the results!

If we were to take Governor Abiodun’s explanation that more bags of 10kg rice were sent to Shokeye Estate for distribution as true, we may want to probe further if the distribution of bags of rice is the solution to the biting economic hardship in the country. Where is the economic blueprint to take us out of the woods? Where are the policies, the directions, the plans, and projections? Why is Nigeria’s economy being run like that of a Point of Sales (POS) kiosk; the one my Igbo people call awara, awara? This is what should get everyone worried. And to think that in the midst of this 10kg-bag-of rice-for-the-vulnerable-households palava, members of the House of Representatives are set to take delivery of brand-new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) as official vehicles, is egregious, to say the least. The SUVs, a Toyota Prado brand, are said to be worth N130 Million each while the bulletproof ones meant for the key officers of the house cost N185 million each! This is happening in a country where a family of five is being given a 10 kg bag of rice as palliative, like the underfed slaves of Efunsetan. I wish someone would help to whisper to these locusts in high places that when what is edible is not available, the people will eat what is inedible!
