I lifted the old lady off the ground , into the house. I stared at Lola and felt a deep sense of pity for her. In her eyes I could see her world falling apart . Unlike myself who had Rita to protect me, even though lately she had been failing at that. Even not knowing anything about this Lola girl, one thing was very certain; she is a survivor , I thought to myself.

Rita didn't move an inch from where she stood. I ignored her and carried the old lady into a little sitting room. I placed her on the couch and noticed blood stains on her head. I turned her head in various directions trying to find the location, as Lola disappeared into a room in the house. In a nick of time she rushed out with a first aid box and disappeared again into another room. I turned to the door way and Rita was just staring at the old lady in aw.

"Why are you not helping . Just standing there, sometimes I don't get you. "

"Come, come close to me." Which I obeyed.

Lola, returned with a little bucket of water and emptied its content on the lady. She hurriedly tore a fresh syringe out and drew a green fluid from a little bottle. She seemed so confident and sure of what she was doing.

"Look at them closely, and tell me what you see." Rita whispered.


"Lola trying rescue her grandmother?"

"No no, thats obvious. I mean look closely ."

"Wow..." Rita placed her palm over my orificed mouth least I screamed my lungs out.

She grabbed me by the shoulder with a stern look.

"Don't ever do that. Never scream! Ever! " she exclaimed in a hushed tone.

What I had just seen shook ever bone in my body. Ever fibre of muscle in my body twitched .

I and Rita had seen two terribly different things, very different ; as offbeat as the appearances, and I find myself running out of adjectives to describe how to clearly give an account of this funny , yet irksome state I found myself , there is a tale I must tell, to fully understand what I had seen.


1985
(A year before my re-birth)

Humble Ben had struck again, and every newspaper, tabloid , journal , and magazine company was certain to make tons on money off this new story. Even the television stations, knew it was only wise to push all their programs aside for more viewer ratings as this was top priority . It was the talk of the town . Those who couldn't afford the television set where seen clustered at various news paper stands . Those who could had to wait till 4pm to watch the news. Sadly only one TV station was fully functional at the time. Some cheering the gang of robbers in excitement, others condemning the gang , and then followed by long heated arguments; the kind that last for hours with full grown bearded men raising their husky voices and shooting cannons of spittle. This was what the scene at almost every bus-stop , junction, intersection or commercial point in with a newspaper vendor in lagos looked like. This was what the media houses wanted; something else to occupy the masses with. Something to keep them talking .

Indeed the gang was just as notorious as the press had portrayed ,and no spice of overripe embellishment was added to this story. No one knew much about this gang, except of course one peculiar name; Humble Ben.

Like the old English outlaw, Robin Hood; being a crooked politician was a major requirement for the office of Victim ; of cause no serious thief robs the poor. They carried out most of their operation on the highway and long roads attacking convoys and entourages and quickly disappear like morning dew . They had a strict formation they usually followed after intense planing and simulations . These people were no joke, almost like they popped out of another time and the people of their time were too slow to catch up. Their strength was in stealth and camouflage. Blending into their victims lives, being a driver to the victim...

They hardly needed the bang! Bang! Approach, and when they did, they were very dangerous; as expected ,this was no burlesque game for any member of the gang.

The biggest problem the police had with taking down this gang was that every Tom, Dick and Harry claimed to have seen them. And of course they always left a souvenir with their name.

Some claimed Humble Ben was dark in complexion bursting with melanin , some claimed he was almost albino, some short, some tall, some bald, some even claimed he had thick Afro.

The truth was, there were no leads to taking down this Humble Ben, and the man was very true to his art.

Except of course, Humble Ben was no man, neither was Humble Ben a spirit or a Myth. Humble Ben was simply a beautiful young woman and I was staring right at her.
