Was nollywood existing as a brand name for Nigerian movies back then? Those were just under the Nigerian film industry not nollywood.

Just because living in bondage wasn't a Yoruba movie you are quick to say it wasn't the forerunner of the nollywood movies we have today.

Go to northern Nigeria and mention living in bondage then add any of those "strange" names you have up there and see which was really recognised as a nollywood movie.

Stop trying to shift the hands of the clock.

I really really tried not to reply you... For God sake!! I ! Am! Not! Yoruba!

To answer your first question "Nollywood is a sobriquet that originally referred to the Nigerian film industry."

Infact , it was untill 2002 it was referred to as "Nollywood".

I couldn't care less whatever tribe did the movie first, I am just explaining the facts which are very clear.

Nollywood is way older than that movie . These are things we learnt as children in fine art, and Herbert Ogunde's movies serve as very great examples. What else do you want to hear?

If its about recognition, he got a lot of international recognitions , even from the British Broadcasting cooperation.

I love what the igbo's did. Lovely movies. Till today, their impact on Nollywood is really great; but history would not be bent over tribalistic feeling.

That is why I gave you a link on wikipedia to read up and get a better understanding that in as much as he was a theatre man , he made movies...

Google this thing! Read a book! Broaden your horizon and drop that tribalistic sentimental bull shit!

angry

I dont know what is wrong with you nairalanders and tribalism.

You don't even know my tribe, you just assume cause I don't swing your way, I am one tribe or the other .

Ya all need re-orientation .

Okay I see a small boy on the thread I expect should be intellectual.
Nollywood is a national heritage and it didn't start with Living in Bondage.
As you can see, others, even Samanja , from the north, were players in the Nollywood project before the English-Igbo genre of Nollywood.
It's a national shame if our young ones like you have a poor sense of our national history, hence I am intervening to educate you.Like I said,I don't do tribalism because I was born and raised among all the beautiful Nigerian tribes and there was no Nairaland to corrupt my patriotism when I was your age

I couldn't have said it better... nairaland is just corrupting this children. The facts are there, and once you show them, they immediately brand you or identify you with a tribe .

What a generation!

You see the problem with Yoruba people in Nigeria. You keep mentioning Yoruba names and dramas as if to say life begins and ends in Lagos. Just as u guys were doing ur bits over there, the igbos were doing theirs too in eastern Nigeria and behold the igbos got the breakthrough first....
Let me even shock u the more, if bestsellers like "things fall apart" could come from the east as far back as then, what's made u think that there weren't other pioneers in other genres in eastern Nigeria. Abi is pa Hubert ogunde the first to act a play in the whole of Nigeria? Yoruba people and tribalism =5&6

Before I proceed to explain thing to you , with the hope that you put tribalism aside and put on your thinking and reasoning hat. I am not yoruba, not even close, probably more eastern than you.

Here are some dramas that Hubert did in his time Muritala Mohamed (1976)
Oree Niwon (1976)
Nigeria (1977)
Igba t' ode (1977)
Orisa N'la (1977)

And here are the films he did
Aiye (1980)
Jaiyesimi (1981)
Aropin (1982)
Ayanmo (1988)

Which earned him recognition from BBC
Man of the Theatre - BBC (1983)

Here is a link to wikipedia if you wish to know more

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubert_Ogunde

As for the very ignorant fellow up there that said people could not go to cinemas to watch Hubert Ogunde's movies, I would let you know that cinemas in lagos , like pen cinemas back in day , as I was told by my grand parents were packed full of people eager to watch.

There is no helping you people, you would rather choose tribalism than the truth , even if its glaring...

Any other non meaningful quote , i wouldn't reply .

Yorubas and lies and rebellious spirit and turning the truth upside-down.

Tufia!

Infact, all that the very intelligent fellow you quoted said , I never watched those movies, I was taught in fine art classes as a young secondary school student. So, I don't really blame you for not knowing , nor the ignorance; I blame our failed education system and the elderly people that should have taught you more, but instead inculcated tribalism into you.

I am not Youruba, but it saddens me as a people to see a living creature like you rather choose ignorance over the truth , just because a tribal hatred . We live in a time where its difficult for anyone to lie to anyone. Why dont you just check wikipedia or something and verify first before being tribalistic.

Its people like you that are making me contemplate on relocating out of this country...

You see. That is the problem with you young ones, lack of humility.
I just mentioned and listed films that are Nigerian films even with national popularity and you can easily and humbly read about them online.
There are films like Block busters like Aiye by Hubert Ogunde Group,Taxi Driver by Ade Love the father of the popular Afolayan brothers, Duro Ladipo group that were the awada kerikeri group, Baba Sala with that film he was shown committing suicide in a train track and so many other films of Nigerian actors and theater you may be too young to know and can easily read on.
Nollywood never started with living in bondage and it is pure ignorance to say that publicly.
The English-Igbo genre of Nigerian films came to the table very very very late and that's why it lacked depth like the preexisting genre of Nigerian films led by the Hubert Ogunde et al.
I just corrected and educated you with love

You Sir are very right. Good to know we still have intelligent people on this platform smiley

Tyrion's stupid plan which Jon Snow, Dany, and many other people stupidly agreed to backfired. What a shocker. Now the NK has a dragon.

Emilia Clarke is a terrible actress. I understand that it was difficult for them to get good British actresses who looked underaged and were willing to do casual nudity and simulated sex on camera, but they should have tried harder. Main characters should be played by very good actors.

Emilia Clarke can't act. One of her "children" was executed and she could not produce a single tear. Not even fake tears. Her character was smiling at Jon Snow when he woke up, shaking her head when he was apologizing. Wtf was that? She can portray 3 emotions: (1) anger (2) happiness (3) horniness. When she is required to portray other emotions like sadness or inner conflict, all she can do is stare blankly into space.

Lmao... Calm down naa, cut her some slack ... What would you say about the chic that acts Sansa's role...
