My apologies for the number of pictures that I’m going to post. I have a lot more pictures on the subject, but I’m going to try to post only a few pictures.

Let’s begin with the issue of ships.

1) That bridge will go over the Lagos Lagoon and the Lagos Lagoon is heavily silted and consequently, it is too shallow for ships to sail there. (Some independent “experts” brought up this issue when Governor Fashola was talking about moving goods from the Lekki Free Trade Zone by barge. I’ll come to that issue later).

2) Before any ship can get to the location where the bridge will be built, it’ll first have to sail under several bridges that are around the same height as the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge. If the ship chooses to sail via the Five Cowrie Creek, it’ll have to sail under the Independence Bridge (Onikan), the Five Cowrie Bridge (Falomo) and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge before it can get to where the 4th Mainland Bridge is. If It chooses to use the Elegbeta Channel, it’ll have to sail unde the Eko Bridge, the Carter Bridge and the 3rd Mainland Bridge before it can get to where the 4th Mainland Bridge is.

These bridges are too low for ships with high masts to sail under and that’s because the people that built the bridges knew that the Lagos Lagoon is too shallow for large ships.

Now, let’s come to the issue of boats.

I was posting about the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and someone brought up this issue that it was too low for boats to sail under. I knew that that’s not true, but I could also understand how the person could make that mistake. I took a lot of pictures of the bridge at that time, so I’ll use the pictures to illustrate the point. If you look at this picture below, you would think that the bridge is too low for boats to sail under.

www.nairaland.com/attachments/10758799_15546061465115800412389187234386943765879n_jpeg8fbe377b301b2695d5cbaaea7d2ba344

However, this is just a section of the bridge. This is the section that runs alongside the shoreline. The section of the bridge that spans the Five Cowrie Creek is actually much higher. In fact, another person on the 2014 thread complained that it was too steep. Boats can easily sail under that section that is high.

The four biggest boats that sail on the Five Cowrie Creek and the Lagos Lagoon are the Nire Prest (Prest Lunch and Dinner Cruise), Sea Cat and Dangote and Otedola’s identical yachts (Mariya and Nana). I have seen all four of them sail under the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge and I have pictures of the Prest and one of the yachts (I don’t know if it’s Dangote’s or Otedola’s because they are identical) sailing under the bridge.

Look at this picture here. This is the Prest preparing to sail under the bridge. You can see from this picture that the bridge slants upward. Note that the Prest is much bigger than it appears in this picture (as you’ll see later in this post).

The Prest is a double decker boat that’s used for birthday parties, conferences and other social activities. It also does a lunch and dinner cruise. There’s space for a kitchen and they also have a live band on board. I went out on Id El Maulud 2014 and got pictures of the boat as it was going under the bridge. Coincidentally, a man on a jet ski was chasing the boat as I took pictures and when I posted the pictures on social media a friend asked me when I took them. I told him and he said that he was the one on the jet ski.

I took this picture from the Prest Lunch and Dinner Cruise website to show you how big the boat is. None of the boats of the Lagos Ferry Service is as big as this, even though they are also quite big.

Finally, I revived this thread when I posted a link to this thread on another thread. However, this wasn’t the thread that I was initially searching for. There’s an older thread about this bridge and it provides more details. There was an image on that thread that showed that the 4th Mainland Bridge would also be a cable stayed bridge and it will also have a high section that boats can sail under.

In fact, barges often take containers across the Lagos Lagoon, despite the presence of all these bridges. There is a liter terminal at Ikorodu and another one at Epe. Containers are taken by barge from Apapa Port and Tin Can Island Port to these terminals in order to decongest the ports. Those barges sail under these bridges. Governor Fashola stated that goods will also be moved from the Lekki Free Trade Zone and Lekki Port across the Lagoon by barges.
