PoliticsComplete Salary Breakdown Of Nigerian Senators by DARREG(op): 2:47pm On Dec 06, 2013
Blogger Peter Okali has a post up detailing the salary of a Nigerian Senator. I’m going to quote most of it, so large hat-tip is due him. (1m Naira is about US$6,100)

Basic Salary (BS) – N2,484,245.50

Hardship Allowance @ 50% of Basic Salary – N1,242,122.70 (I love this kind of hardship)

Constituency allowance @ 200% of BS - N4,968,509.00

Furniture Allowance @ 300% of BS – N7,452,736.50

Newspaper allowance @ 50% – N1,242,122.70 (Which kind newspaper be this, abi na online or hard copy?)

Wardrobe allowance @ 25% – N621,061.37

Recess Allowance @ 10% – N248,424.55

Accommodation @ 200% – N4,968,509.00

Utilities @ 30% – N828,081.83

Domestic Staff @ 35% – N863,184.12

Entertainment @ 30% – N828,081.83

Personal Assistance @ 25% – N621,061.37

Vehicle Maintenance Allowance @ 75% – N1,863,184.12

Leave Allowance @ 10% – N248,424.55

One off payments (Severance gratuity) @ 300% – N7,452,736.50 (Once they get fired.)

Motor Vehicle Allowance @ 400% of BS – N9,936,982.00 – Every Four Years

Senator’s Salary per month – N2,456,647.70
Total = N29,479,749.00 Per Year
Allowance of Nigerian Senator: $1,500,000/year

To clarify, Nigerian senators get paid about $180,000 per year as a salary. On top of this, they get about $1.5m in allowances, as detailed above. And that’s what they receive officially. You can multiply that by a factor of 3-5 to account for the graft, backhanders, and additional income streams they enjoy whilst in office (and often thereafter). According to Peter, the senators – of which there are 109 – have been asking for an increase in their allowances to $183,000 per month, or $2.2m per year. By contrast, the US president gets paid $400,000 per year.

As Peter says:

Little wonder why everyone in Nigeria has political ambitions and will do whatever it takes to get there.

Indeed. And little wonder why most Nigerians are hopelessly poor and there is a General Strike kicking off tomorrow.

BusinessNairaland Should Embrace Wikipedia Approach And Reject Advertising by DARREG(op): 11:12am On Dec 04, 2013
I enjoy nairaland alot because it always keeps me informed and a tool to get diverse views about things. but I think nairaland should be a non-profit organisation and maintainance cost should be through donations and not advertising. If demanded I am willing to donate to Nairaland if it were a non-profit organisation as people do with wikipedia. I hardly click on advert banners on nairaland cos I dont have time but I believe there is more power in the posts and front page(which I think is a more viable means).

LIKE IF YOU BELIEVE NAIRALAND SHOULD BE NON-PROFIT
EducationAll Is Set For Team Covenant To Win The Inaugural NPUGA GAMES by DARREG(op): 10:51am On Dec 04, 2013
All is now set for the participation of the sport team of Covenant University at the 2013 Nigeria Private Universities Games (NPUGA) billed to hold at Joseph Ayo Babalola University from Saturday 14, to Saturday 21, December 2013.
Team Covenant is currently intensifying preparation towards the event under the watchful eyes of the Head Coach, John Obogo. Four other coaches and eight ancillary team officials are supporting him in ensuring a successful outing for the team.
Covenant University would be participating in nine sporting events, among which are Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, Chess, Scrabble, Badminton and Athletics. All which would be featuring the male and female team of the University, except football.
The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Charles Korede Ayo, in his goodwill message to NPUGA Council and participating teams said, “The reality of these Games is a further confirmation that Private Tertiary Institutions are not only out to rescue our educational system from decadence, but also creating an avenue for redeeming the battered image of Nigeria in sports through the instrumentality of organized games of this magnitude.”
He concluded by enjoining members of the sporting team of Covenant University to be good ambassadors of the University, upholding the spirit of sportsmanship, compete fairly with a good conscience in the fear of God.
Coach Obogo speaking ahead of one of their training session noted that the training schedule of the University’s representative has increased in intensity, with team spirit being on the high side, ahead of the University debut at the fifth edition of the competition, since formation of NPUGA council.
Furthermore, he affirmed the team’s readiness to do the University proud and make the games the sports council contribution to the Covenant University drive towards the Vision of being One of Ten in Ten in 2022.
According to him, “We would not just be known around the world for our academic excellence, but would also be celebrated for churning out quality and world class sportsmen and women,” he concluded.
Covenant University recognizes the importance of a sound and healthy body, thus the premium placed on the study of Total Man Concept Sports related topics since her inception in 2002.

Joavid: Love, real?? Nah
I know of the love that exists and connects between families I.e mother and child

Any other thing is fake.

There can be nothing like love between two strangers. What am aware of is a romantic relationship/friendship and being attracted to the qualities he/she possess(outward appearance and character).

EducationRe: Covenant University Bans 'Make-Up' And 'Heels' by DARREG(op): 10:38pm On Sep 11, 2013
Oyedepo is brilliant, both as a preacher and businessman.
The whole thing about ultra-conservative dress-code is about marketing; it makes good business sense, however hogwash, banal, trifling and hypocritical. It's a make-believe gambit, and gullible, money-miss-road parents are falling over it and over themselves to have their wards admitted into Oyedepo's university. My analysis is that the school is simply trying to project an image of seriousness and discipline. It's a PR thing. How else may Nigerian parents, who permanently see their children as kids even at 40, be bought over without selling the card of seriousness and discipline as the values a school represent?
Look well, though, it's all a veneer, and one seductive to parents, just as much as shielding off, as it were, all of CU's inadequacies from prying eyes. Make no mistake, many foolish parents will conclude CU to be the best just on the strength and myth of the dress-code idea.
The problem, however, is: Oyedepo is running his university like a secondary school and not a university...
CU is being run like an ideal secondary school!!!!
HOWEVER, OPENNESS, UNIVERSALISM, FREEDOM, BOTH ACADEMIC AND OTHERWISE, LIBERALISM, AUTHENTICITY, IDEALISM, ALL OF WHICH COMBINE TO KILL AND BURY CONSERVATISM, FORM THE DRIVING PRINCIPLES OF A UNIVERSITY WORTH THE NAME.
A true university does not set borders or limits on investigation or on the the human potential for authentic, kaleidoscopic being-hood.
For a university worth the name, anything and everything, in so far as it represents an idea is welcomed in an open atmosphere of constant debate. In a university, reason alone, not religion, not just the Bible or Koran or Bhagavad Gita, constitute the final arbiter.
The successes of the University as a human institution, as the harbinger of science, philosophy and art owe its being to pure reliance on man's highest faculty, REASON.
No-go areas don't exist for a university worth the name. Even God as a concept and possible being is not beyond query or bold interrogation in a university worth the name. Only open societies and institutions remain the hope of humanity for advancement, scientific and cultural breakthroughs, because conservationism stifles man's imagination and creative potential.
A TRUE UNIVERSITY DOES EVERYTHING IN THE NAME AND SPIRIT OF LIBERALISM, WARTS AND ALL!!!!
Hope somebody reading me understands.
