President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources,
Timipre Sylva, to visit the Bayelsa community
affected by a recent oil spillage and to probe
the degree of havoc caused by the incident.
Sylva disclosed this on Wednesday while
speaking to the state house correspondents
after a meeting with President Muhammadu
Buhari, The Cable reports.
A wellhead in the Santa Barbara South field had
blown on November 5 and since then, it had
been spewing oil into the water bodies.
It is jointly owned by Aiteo Eastern Exploration
and Production Company (AEEPCO) and the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC).
Aiteo, which acquired the oil mining lease, OML
29 in 2015, had said that it was working with oil
spill regulators to contain the leak.
Responding to queries about efforts made by
Buhari’s regime in ensuring proper prevention of
the oil spillage, he said the President had given
an order to the ministry to ascertain the level of
damage done at the site.
“And the question which is on the spillage in
OML 29, we are quite aware of it,” Sylva said.
“Unfortunately, it has happened. It is also one of
the issues I discussed with the president as a
minister and he has asked us to go and visit the
site to assess the situation and report back.”
“Definitely, we are quite concerned with what is
happening in Nembe and will be going there very
soon, tomorrow in fact, to go and look at what
is happening and report back.”
He said Buhari was concerned about the flowing
oil, saying that the adverse environmental
impact of the spill will not be tolerated by the
government.
“Mr. President is personally very interested and
we have discussed it and he said we should go
there and come back and report to him because
environmental degradation issues are things that
we are not going to condone but of course we’ll
work with the operators of OML 29 to ensure
that this spillage is brought under control as
quickly as possible,” he added.

Police are hunting a convicted felon
who fled Atlanta’s international
airport after his gun accidentally
discharged during a security search
and sparked panic, IgbereTV reports.
The incident on Saturday sent dozens
of passengers scurrying for cover and
resulted in three injuries, none of
which were caused by the discharge.
“We are actively pursuing this
individual,” Atlanta Police’s Major
Reginald Moorman said in a press
conference after identifying the
suspect as 42-year-old Kenny Wells.
The Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) said the
incident occurred after a “prohibited
item” was identified inside a
passenger’s baggage by an X-Ray
machine.
As a security officer opened the
compartment containing the item,
“the passenger lunged into the bag
and grabbed a firearm, at which point
it discharged.”
“The passenger then fled the area,
running out of the airport exit,” the
TSA said, adding that the officer had
told the passenger not to touch the
item.
One person was injured in a fall in the
ensuing panic and two others
complained of shortness of breath,
police said.
Shortly after the incident at around
1:30 pm (1830 GMT), the airport said
on Twitter that there was no active
shooter, and “there is no danger to
passengers or employees.”
Police gave the all-clear just before
3:00 pm.

Iraq has repatriated more than 400 of its nationals from Belarus on a special flight, and more flights are reportedly planned to take would-be migrants home. What happens to migrants that get across? The Polish border guard service says there have been 33,000 attempts to cross the border illegally so far this year, with 17,000 in October alone. More than 4,200 migrants have been apprehended crossing the Lithuanian border from Belarus this year, according to authorities there. Some of those who make it across are being held at migrant detention centres. But some are being pushed back to Belarus by Polish border guards - although international law states that anyone seeking protection must be given access to the asylum process even if they have crossed a border illegally. Poland's parliament has passed an amendment allowing border guards to immediately expel migrants who cross the border illegally, which is likely to be signed into law. A similar law was passed in Lithuania in August. Since then about 6,800 migrants have been stopped from entering Lithuania.

The troops of 25 Task Force Brigade on Friday repelled a terrorist attack on Damboa town in Borno State.

The troops were said to have overpowered militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in a gun battle, forcing them to flee.

The insurgents had reportedly stormed the town around 6:35 am, shooting in all directions.

This created tension among residents but troops reportedly engaged them in a heavy shootout, forcing them to retreat.

A source said the terrorists were first sighted around Mandara Garau on Thursday while converging in a large number of trucks.

He said the plan was to attack a transit camp for 'repentant' fighters in Sabon Gari, Damboa.

“They fled after they sighted the Airforce fighter jet on Thursday. Again, they returned this morning. They wanted to attack the ex-militants' transit camp in Sabon Gari, Damboa.

“So while attempting to infiltrate the town, the soldiers engaged them in a heavy shootout. Those who survived the troops' onslaught fled, abandoning their evil mission,” the source added.

Since the death of JAS leader, Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has been consolidating its grip in locations around Lake Chad.

Just recently, it appointed Wali Sani Shuwaram, a 45-year-old as the new leader (Wali) of ISWAP in Lake Chad.

The sect’s membership has swollen with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters under Shekau.
