Good day Nairalanders. I started experiencing what I could call rib pains on my right rib cage last Friday GMT +1. Considering my Job I assumed I had fractured my ribs somehow without knowing, but the pain persisted till Monday that was when I started observing this rashes in clusters along my rib cage. I later found out from a Medical examiner on board that it is shingles caused by a dormant variant of chicken pox. He also said there was no cure, just to manage the symptoms till it dissapears. He gave me an Antifungal/ corticosteroid cream to apply, one other drug and paracetamol to take. Note this is because there is a shortage of Medical supplies. The rash keeps increasing and the pain is getting worst. I have attached a photo of my condition as of this morning, pardon the image quality its from an outdated computer camera. Please Guys has anyone experienced this before? How do I handle the pain as in what pain relief drug should I use for the mean time as I am planning on Seeking Medical help in Equatorial Guinea where we'll be ashore in 72 hours. Dominique Lalaaticlalala I'd appreciate if this gets to FP. |

The Ukraine crisis entered a new state of intensity over the weekend, as the U.S. warned that movement by Russian troops — now numbering well over 100,000 along the Ukrainian border — and unspecified intelligence has led Washington to believe Moscow is on the brink of an invasion. “We are in the window. And an invasion could begin — a major military action could begin — by Russia, in Ukraine, any day now,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday on CNN. But it’s not just Russian troop movements that are setting off alarm bells. A large naval buildup in the Black and Mediterranean seas has created another threat to Ukraine near Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula that Russia invaded and annexed in 2014. “This is an unprecedented Russian naval presence,” Andrii Klymenko of Ukraine’s Institute of Black Sea Strategic Studies told Yahoo News via a translator, adding that 12 landing ships had appeared in the Black Sea on Friday. Such a concentration, he said, hasn’t been seen since the Cold War ended three decades ago. “We haven’t seen a movement like this in recent history,” retired U.S. Adm. James Foggo, who commanded European NATO naval forces until last year, similarly told Politico. According to Black Sea News, “On Saturday, Black Sea exercises started with more than 30 Russian military ships,” including submarines and cruisers. The drills are also using aviation and land troops in maneuvers, according to the website. The maneuvers, which officially began Feb. 13 and are scheduled to continue through Feb. 22, “will launch missile and bomb strikes” against sea, air and coastal targets, according to the TVzvezda.ru site. In its notification last week of the upcoming exercises in the Black Sea, a body of water that is about the size of the Northeastern U.S., the Russian government sent out a map showing “no-go zones,” shocking Mykhailo Samus, director of New Geopolitics Research Network, a think tank based in Kyiv. “On the map, they’re closing down nearly half of the Black Sea,” he told Yahoo News. “It's crazy.” While countries normally close off certain zones during military exercises, he said, “normally it’s not half the sea.” Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the Russian naval operation amounted to a blockade of the country, which relies on commercial sea vessels for over half of its exports. “The maneuvers make navigation” in both the Black and Azov seas “virtually impossible,” the Ukrainian government said. Previous thinking held that Russia was unlikely to strike before the Feb. 20 end of the Beijing Olympics to avoid antagonizing the Chinese government. But the U.S. announced at the end of last week that its view of the crisis had shifted and it is now bracing for an attack to come any day. The U.S. evacuated its embassy in Kyiv this weekend and told American citizens that it was “past time to leave” Ukraine. Other countries, including Canada, Israel, Japan, Australia and even Russia, have similarly evacuated embassy personnel. “Things could go crazy quickly,” President Biden warned in an NBC interview. Biden has vowed that the U.S. would not send troops to Ukraine, which is not a member of NATO, saying such an effort would risk “world war.” But the U.S. has promised a punishing round of sanctions and a unified Western response to a Russian invasion. The Kremlin has rejected and downplayed reports that it plans to attack Ukraine, but it has not stopped encircling its ex-Soviet bloc neighbor. In addition to naval movements in the south, tens of thousands of Russians are engaged in military exercises with Belarusian forces to Ukraine’s north; pro-Russian separatists are also conducting drills in the Donbass region in Ukraine’s east, where Russia has armed and financed a proxy war for nearly eight years. Washington has also been rapidly declassifying its intelligence on Russian movements, hoping that such transparency will frustrate Russian President Vladimir Putin’s operations. In particular, the U.S. has warned that the Kremlin is looking to stage a “false flag” attack to fabricate Ukrainian aggression and justify their supposed response. “The world should be prepared for Russia staging a pretext and then launching a potential military action,” Sullivan said Sunday. Inform Napalm, a respected volunteer Ukrainian intelligence group, spotted peculiar activity last week by Russian military near the Crimea Bridge, the almost 12-mile bridge constructed by Russia across the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov, which is uneasily shared by Russia and Ukraine. Inform Napalm’s spokesman Mykhailo Makaruk noted that the group had received reports “about Russian military engineers” on boats “working near the bridge.” “It is possible,” Makaruk added, “that they are planning to blow up their own bridge,” which opened in 2018 and connects Crimea to the Russian mainland. Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russian President Vladimir Putin chairs a meeting with members of the Security Council via teleconference call. (Alexey Nikolsky/Sputnik/AFP via Getty Images) Klymenko thinks such an act is in the realm of possibility. “We also think that a Russian staging [of a false flag event] is possible — either an attack on a Russian ship in the Sea of Azov or a mock sabotage act against the Kerch [Crimean] Bridge, which is Mr. Putin’s favorite toy,” he told Yahoo News. The Black Sea and Sea of Azov have been sites of mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine, particularly over the past eight years. “Since 2014, Russia has total dominance in the Black Sea — total dominance — because they have six submarines with Kalibr cruise missiles with a 2,500-kilometer range, which is covering not only Ukraine, but half of Europe,” said Samus. He said the situation in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov degraded rapidly after the events of late November 2018, when Russia blocked three Ukrainian military vessels from crossing from the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait to the Sea of Azov. After refusing the ships entrance, the Russian navy pursued the Ukrainian vessels, ultimately firing on them, ramming one, and arresting the 24 Ukrainian crew members. Samus was stunned by Russia’s show that it had no intention of abiding by international law, but also that NATO had so little to say about the incident. “International maritime law doesn’t exist in the Black Sea anymore,” Samus said. President Biden wears a mask while walking outside. President Biden walks away from Marine One to the White House. (Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images) Foggo, the retired U.S. admiral, recalled that incident earlier this month during an Atlantic Council webinar, calling it “outrageous” and “a violation of the Geneva Conventions.” Foggo added: “We didn’t do enough about it.” Adding to the apprehension, NATO — which reportedly had planned to send several ships to the Black Sea in late January — has been pulling back from those waters. “In 2021, there was a high concentration of NATO ships in the Black Sea,” said Klymenko. But they left, he said, the last being a French missile frigate that departed on Jan. 2. “Now there is an incomprehensible and dangerous pause,” he said. “We, as experts, government officials and diplomats, have been asking our partners for the past months to ensure the continued presence of NATO ships.” But NATO ships have yet to appear. (NATO did not respond to a request for comment.) Samus added that Ukraine doesn’t have much of a navy, and “NATO doesn't have any strategy in Black Sea.” A sign at a border crossing. (Chris McGrath/Getty Images) NATO ships are, however, in the nearby eastern Mediterranean, where three NATO allied aircraft carrier strike groups conducted exercises last week. However, Russian ships are also very near them in the Mediterranean — in what Klymenko fears may be a maneuver to prevent NATO vessels from entering the Black Sea. Samus isn’t certain what to expect, but he believes that Putin may try to avoid sanctions by not actually launching a war from the Black Sea. Instead, Russia could strangle the Ukrainian economy by blocking commercial ships from getting to Ukrainian ports — a “hybrid attack” that “could be a disaster for the Ukrainian economy.” Foggo, while applauding NATO’s unified response to the Russian threat, cautioned that the approach has thus far been far too “land-centric.” NATO “needs more maritime force,” he noted in the Feb. 4 Atlantic Council webinar, and it needs “a comprehensive NATO maritime strategy to deal with situations like this.” https://www.yahoo.com/news/russia-ukraine-black-sea-naval-blockade-175148404.html

Professor Banji Akintoye, Yoruba Historian and leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self- Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, has launched a mobile application, ‘Pajawiri' designed to track kidnapped victims and expose danger in Yoruba land. This was made known in a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson for the Ilana Omo Oodua group, Maxwell Adeyemi. Akintoye noted that Pajawiri is an innovative way of fighting and combating crimes in modern society. According to him, the mobile application and alert system can expose criminal elements wherever they are with their victims once the victims have the application installed on their phones, either on or off. He noted that the Security System has another system called AFINIHAN that can be used by those without android phones to link up with those with the full application. Speaking at the launch held in Ibadan, Oyo State, Akintoye, who joined the event virtually, said the emergence of PAJAWIRI is an evidence that the Yoruba people are too intellectually sophisticated to be subdued. Akintoye was quoted as saying, "We have now proven to the world that we cannot be captured nor be subdued. We are too intellectually sophisticated to be subdued. "It is these innovations and intellectual powers that we will deploy to get ourselves out of the quagmires of Nigeria.” On the attendant benefits of PAJAWIRI, Akintoye, added, “Every person in possession of the Pajawiri app on their telephone, will be able to activate the App instantly, whenever they find themselves in danger. By activating the app, they will be able to alert their families, their friends and their neighbours that they are in danger and that they need help. "In that way, no Yoruba person needs to be alone anywhere on their farms, schools, market places, shops and anywhere else. Any person who finds himself threatened by danger and who is in possession of Pajawiri will be able to alert other persons for help. "In short, Yoruba people today, are able now to enjoy security individually and collectively through the use of the App known as Pajawiri. "The Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide owes our engineers who have put this together an enormous debt of gratitude. The Yoruba people also owe a lot of gratitude to the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination groups, 'Ilana Omo Oduduwa' for all the encouragement and support that they have given to these engineers. "The creators of this App- Pajawiri have magnanimously offered to put this app Pajawiri freely at the disposal of every Yoruba person for the next thirty days. That is, from now till the 21st of January, 2022. This means that all Yoruba people can have the protection of Pajawiri without paying any fees for the next thirty days. "After that, those who choose to continue to enjoy the protection of Pajawiri will be able to do so with an affordable monthly subscription. That is for those of us who have Smartphones (Android, iOS or iPhone). For those of us who do not have smartphones (android, iOS or iPhone), there has been designed a hand-held alert device named AFINIHAN to work equally as effectively as the Pajawiri on the iPhone. "AFINIHAN - a tiny hand-held device that is able to perform wonders. This tiny device has been efficiently tested and will be available for purchase at a small affordable price. "The purpose of all these technological provisions, is that the Yoruba nation must carry all its people along in this provision of security," Akintoye said. The Coordinator of the PAJAWIRI PROJECT, Ayobami Abolaji, while speaking on the ideal features and benefits of the App, explained that the Pàjáwìrì App is a system to warn and protect through an alarm and alert system that will generate protective action for the community and each individual user. The United States-based IT expert said "The Pàjáwìrì app is designed to provide a technological solution or a system that allows people to warn others of impending dangers and arouse established Response Teams in the communities to stop and prevent various vices such as: Kidnapping, Raping, Armed Robbery, Arson, Theft, Accidents, Murders and Banditry against app users and their community members. "The Pàjáwìrì App is a technologically savvy information and communication application that alerts and locates the source and flashpoints of dangerous security breaches where unchallenged massacres of valuable human lives and properties are perpetrated. The Pàjáwìrì App proffers a modern-day means of curbing or permanently alleviating the fears that have gripped the inhabitants of any geographical location and settlements once and for all. "The Pàjáwìrì App was designed to be activated through a referral process only, in order to be able to know the identities of the app users and detect suspicious and criminal elements disguising as real users. It will be free to download by any user and will be operational after the referral activated the new user to have the referral identification. "AFINIHAN is an Android and iPhone (iOS) compatible application device that sends alert signals to the connected phone systems. It is a mobile alarm system that allows those without handheld phones to connect to and alert those with the smartphones and computer devices set up at data command and control centres established at various perimeters in the geographical entities that the app is operating from," Abolaji stated. http://saharareporters.com/2021/12/27/yoruba-nation-agitator-banji-akintoye-launches-mobile-app-track-kidnap-victims

The 40-year-old woman, from northern Jawzjan province, gave the baby to a childless couple in return for $104 (N43, 000 at the official rate of N410 to $1) which she hoped would buy enough food to last her family for another six months. An Afghan mother has been forced to sell one of her newborn twins to get money to feed the other amid the country's rapidly worsening food crisis. The 40-year-old woman, from northern Jawzjan province, gave the baby to a childless couple in return for $104 (N43, 000 at the official rate of N410 to $1) which she hoped would buy enough food to last her family for another six months, Daily Mail reports. Drought had forced the couple to move to a nearby city, where her husband and second- eldest son worked as labourers before the Taliban take-over in August collapsed Afghanistan's economy and work dried up. The UN now warns that more than half of Afghanistan's population faces starvation this winter, a problem compounded by the fact that many aid agencies fled the country as the government collapsed and international aid dried up. This family's plight was uncovered by Save the Children, which does still have workers on the ground who are distributing what food they have to those in need. Speaking to the charity workers, the Afghan mother explained that she had given birth to the twins - a boy and a girl - around four or five months ago, shortly after leaving their farm due to drought. Sitting in a bare room carpeted in rugs donated by a local mosque, the woman explained that all of the children's clothes are secondhand and donated by locals. She had initially planned to keep both children, but was barely able to get hold of enough food for even one of them - typically bread, and sometimes milk powder. Her husband, 45, works as a labourer but says there are only enough jobs for one day of work in five - and the day's wages, around $1, are enough for just two days of food. The second-eldest son also works in the nearby market, the mother said, pushing carts that stall owners use to carry their produce. But because he is young, owners often prefer to use stronger children and he frequently goes without work as well. With the new babies crying continually from hunger, the woman says a childless couple approached her and offered $104 to take her newborn son away. Initially she refused, but after several days of seeing the boy cry with nothing to eat - she decided that giving him away was the best option to provide for him and for her remaining children. She said: 'It was hard. Harder than you can imagine. I gave my child away because of destitution... I was unable to take care of him and I could not afford anything. 'I gave all of the money to my husband. He bought some rice, oil, and flour. We already finished them.' Her husband added: 'We need help, we are hungry and poor. 'There are no work opportunities in Afghanistan. We have children. We need flour and oil the most, which we don’t have. It’s also good to have firewood. 'I could not afford to buy meat in the last two or three months. We only have bread for the children which is not always available.' Save the Children provided the family with emergency packages for their home. They were given items for the kitchen, blankets, winter clothing, shoes, tool kits and other essential items such as a gas cooking stove. Workers also learned of a second case where another mother of twins was pressured by her family to leave one of them to die because she was suffering from malnutrition - but she refused to give up on the girl. The woman's 18-month-old twins are both unwell and weak. With the weather getting colder and the little suffering from severe malnutrition, the woman explained she can’t afford to care for her children as a single parent. "My son and my daughter cried all last night because they were hungry. We have nothing in my house. We have no food, no flour, we have nothing," she said. "My husband doesn’t send us money. (He says) 'let her die'. Everyone was telling me, "We 'will buy her, but I didn’t give her up." http://saharareporters.com/2021/12/10/mother-sells-her-newborn-child-money-feed-afghanist
