Olumide Babalola, Nigerian counsel to the Cable News Network (CNN), has called on the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to tender an apology to the medium for tagging it a fake news outfit after an investigative report carried out by the American media house on the killing of protesters at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020. In November 2020, Mohammed said a report by CNN on the Lekki shooting “did not just fall short of journalistic standards but reinforces the disinformation that is going around on the issue”. The minister, in the letter written to CNN, said the international platform left out a video which could have shown that “armed hoodlums invaded the Lekki Toll Gate that night, and could have hit any of the protesters as they shot sporadically”. “This is a ploy by the CNN reporter/presenter to manipulate viewers of its ‘investigative’ report and force them to draw the reporter’s desired conclusion,” the minister had written. In a statement on Tuesday, the CNN counsel said the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters report had vindicated the organization’s investigative report, titled, ‘How a bloody night of bullets and brutality quashed a young protest movement’. “Alhaji Lai Mohammed should eschew his pride and apologize to the CNN if he has any integrity left,” Babalola said. He added, “He has consistently claimed that the CNN’s report of the massacre was false, but the panel has vindicated the CNN’s position on the gruesome and wanton killings at the Lekki Tollgate. “Without necessarily saying more on this, since the same minister had earlier called on the CNN to apologize for fake news, which has now been quasi-judicially proved to be true, one would think the honorable thing for Alhaji Mohammed to do, as an elder statesman and learned gentleman, is to apologize to the CNN especially. “However, as we continue to wait on the minister and the Federal Government’s next move, I sympathize with families of all the victims of the Lekki massacre, while we pray for the souls of the departed and hope the government implements the report in full.” “In the light of the report by the judicial panel, Mohammed ought to eat the humble pie and apologize to the CNN." http://saharareporters.com/2021/11/17/cnn-lawyer-demands-apology-buhari’s-minister-lai-mohammed-over-lagos-endsars-report

The Nigerian Army says militants from the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) are planning to kill more military commanding officers following the death of Brig Gen Dzarma Zirkusu. Zirkusu, until his death, was the commander of the 28 Task Force in Chibok. SaharaReporters had reported that ISWAP fighters on Saturday engaged Nigerian troops at a military base in Askira, Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State in a gun battle. Some civilians had said they sighted the terrorists in a long convoy of gun trucks along Ngude axis towards Askira. The civilians added that they reported the movement of the terrorists to security forces but no action was taken before the deadly group stormed Askira town hours later. Hours after the incident, Director, Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu in a statement said a Brigadier General and three other soldiers were killed. While he identified the slain senior officer as Zirkusu, the army spokesperson was silent on the identities of the junior officers killed. In a military signal seen by SaharaReporters on Monday, the army authorities claimed the terrorists are planning to target more senior officers and commanders. It added that a “battle could have been lost if a commander is killed.” The signal read in full, “At about 130915A Nov 21, following attack on troops of115 Task Force Battalion Askira Uba by ISWAP terrorists, troops of 25 Brigade led by Brigade Commander, Brig Gen MF Babayo (N/10211) in conjunction with troops of 28TF Brigade carried out reinforcement to Askira. While on pursuit of the terrorist, troops made contact with the terrorist at Leho Village (N10°42'10.22" E12°50'47.76" ![]() in Askira LGA. “During the contact, own MRAP conveying the Brigade Commander deliberately rammed ISWAPs MRAP which led to destruction of ISWAPs MRAP while own MRAP engulfed in fire. However, the Brigade Commander and the MRAP crew were able to get out of the MRAP but the commander had serious chest injury due to the head on collision. Casualties on troops are one soldier and one CJTF WIA while equipment casualties are one x Phantom MRAP, 3 x AA Guns (2 DAMAGED), one x AK47 rifle, 2 x AK 47 Magazine and 60 x 7.62mm (SPECIAL) rounds. Enemy casualties are over 50 terrorists elements (including their commander) were killed. Enemies one x MRAP and 5 x GTs destroyed while tps recovered 3 x GTs, 2 x AA guns, 5 x AK47 rifles, one x HK MG and one x HK MG links were recovered. “At about 131745A Nov 21, the WIA were evacuated to 7 DMSH for further medical Management. Reinforcement team returned to HQ 25TF Bde Damboa at about 2000hours same day. Please find pictures attached. One of the major elements in battle is the Commander. Commanders of 25TF and 28TF Brigades put up amazing direction of command leading troops into battle. “Unfortunately, the 25TF Brigade Commander lost his life in the process. It is quite heroic but not to good that commanders are found in the fore front to lead battles. If the command should fall, then troops have not direction or fighting spirit. It is one of the rules of warfare that the battle could have been lost if a commander is killed; hence soldiers could retreat. “It should be note that ISWAP intends to follow this suit by targeting commanders. Commanders are now eager to motivate and inspire soldiers where moral is low. It is only significant that troops be always encouraged to show professionalism in the face of existing threats to fight without recourse the enemy of the State. Such motivational aspects of military trade craft should be encouraged as well as discipline while the Commanders highly directs and request appropriate from ASA need items and CAS to support the battle. Kindly forwarded for your information.” The ISWAP in a statement released on Sunday night had claimed 17 soldiers were killed. According to the group, 13 soldiers were killed when its fighters attacked troops at a military base in Askira town while four others including Brigadier General Zirkus were killed during an ambush at Bulguma, a few kilometres from Askira. ISWAP added that it razed down the army camp, a four-wheel vehicle and another armored vehicle parked inside the base. The militants also said another vehicle, a tank, different weapons, and ammunition were captured during the incident. http://saharareporters.com/2021/11/16/exclusive-iswap-fighters-planning-kill-more-military-commanders-–-nigerian-army-sends

The Cour De’appal De Cotonou, Benin Republic, where Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho) and his wife, were arraigned on Thursday has ordered the wife to be released this evening. SaharaReporters learnt from court officials that the court ruled that Igboho should be returned to custody. “They just finished from court. The wife is to be released this night and Sunday is to remain in custody. The matter was adjourned till Friday,” an official said. SaharaReporters had reported that Sunday Igboho was awaiting his fate at the Cour De’appal De Cotonou, Benin Republic, following his arraignment by the authorities of the country for immigration-related offences. Igboho was taken to court on Thursday afternoon. A source had told SaharaReporters that the activist was not for extradition to Nigeria. SaharaReporters had reported how Benin Republic police on Monday night arrested Igboho at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, while trying to fly from the country to Germany. The Department of State Services (DSS) had on July 1 raided the residence of the activist in Ibadan, Oyo state. Igboho had planned a ”Yoruba Nation Rally” in Lagos two days before the raid. A law enforcement officer identified as Popoola Abayomi has been arrested for selling illicit drugs to students of a federal university and cult members in Ogun State. The drug dealer who serves in the Lagos State Command of the undisclosed security agency was arrested on Wednesday, June 15, 2021, after agents monitored activities at his wife's shop for days. His wife’s shop was said to be used as his sales point in the Camp area of Abeokuta, according to Daily Trust. A spokesman for National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday in Abuja that one of his salesmen, a motorcycle rider known as Ogah, was trailed to the location around 8 pm and arrested with six pinches of Colorado weighing 1.17grammes before Popoola, who had been on the agency’s watchlist was nabbed with different illicit drugs including codeine, 17 bottles; cannabis, 22.26 grammes; tramadol, 230, 98 grammes; 61 tablets of flunitrazepam, 23.72 grammes; 113 tablets of molly, 48.16 grammes and sex drops, 43.92 grammes. “After the arrest of the two suspects, some student union officials of the institution blocked the NDLEA team with their official vehicle. The narcotic agents however restrained themselves and after hours of standoff succeeded in moving the suspects to custody,” Babafemi said. Similarly, one Adelodun Kamaldeen was arrested by operatives of the Oyo State Command of the NDLEA at General Area, Ilorin, Kwara State following the interception of a parcel containing cocaine and heroin that weighed 10.5 grammes and 4.8 grammes respectively on June 13. The following day, two ladies: Mary Peter, 40, and Mercy Oladele, 39, were arrested at Total Garden, Ibadan when NDLEA operatives acting on a tip-off, intercepted their commercial Micra car. The two women were arrested with seven bags of cannabis weighing 77.23 kg brought in from Ogbese, Ondo State, to supply a man they simply identified as Alhaji. According to them, they had earlier supplied the same Alhaji two bags before coming with the seven bags they were caught with. On Friday 18 June, operatives of the Oyo State Command of the agency, acting on intelligence raided the residence of one Alhaji Faruq at Elebu area, Akala Expressway, Oluyole LGA, Ibadan, where they recovered 43 ampoules of methylphenidate. Meanwhile, In Kaduna State, a drug trafficker, Segun Abraham, was arrested at the Panteka area of the state on 17 June with 211.5 kg of skunk while he was heading to Kano State. Also, a Nigerian returning from Pakistan, Ezenyeche Kingsley Ebuka, was arrested by NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos with five pellets of heroin weighing 250 grammes discovered in his anus. The suspect had arrived at the ‘D’ arrival hall of the airport on 14 June on a Turkish airline flight from Pakistan with the illicit drug inserted in his anus. He, however, failed to deceive narcotic officers during the inward clearance of passengers on the flight. Commending the Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna, and the MMIA commands of the agency for sustaining the offensive action against illicit drug trafficking and the cartels running it, Chairman/ Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig-Gen. Buba Marwa warned that the NDLEA will not spare any law enforcement agent hiding under the privilege of their uniform to engage in narcotic business. The Executive Secretary, Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Bello Shehu, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at an occasion on Saturday has warned secessionists and agitators to cease their agitation, saying Nigeria is a dominant force in West Africa. Buhari’s representative warned that those agitating for separation are naive and ignorant of war. Speaking through Shehu, the President gave an address as a Special Guest of Honour during the launch of the Kudirat Abiola Sabon Gari, Zaria Peace Foundation which took place at Ahmadu Bello University Hotels, Zaria, Kaduna State. According to Daily Post, Buhari said that the nation is not restructuring, adding that most people carrying the subject do not even understand what they are talking about. “And again, those who are discussing restructuring, my question is what are you going to restructure?” Buhari asked. “If you ask many Nigerians what are they going to restructure, you will find out that they have nothing to talk about. Some of them have not even studied the 1999 constitution. The 1999 constitution is almost 70 to 80 percent 1979 constitution. “The other issue is that those who are calling for restructuring and conference on what they call ethnic nationality, if you go to Southern Kaduna, Taraba, who is to represent them? We have different combinations of ethnicities in many states. Even Kano and Kaduna Igbo have properties. The same goes with Yorubas. “There are Fulani in Port Harcourt. So those calling for separation or restructuring, some of them I will say are very naive or even mischievously dangerous. Those agitating for restructuring are ignorant of war and its consequences because Nigeria is a dominant force in west Africa. “There is no government in the world that will cede their authority to the people that are not elected. “You are telling us to resolve a system and call for an obscure conference to come and discuss how we can move forward as a nation, that can never be done and no country will agree to that. “So those who are doing that should go back and meet their representatives in the House of Assembly and ask for whatever amendment of the constitution. Due process should be followed.” Lalasticlala Mynd44 http://saharareporters.com/2021/06/20/people-calling-secession-restructuring-nigeria-ignorant-war—buhari

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Sunday Asefon has vowed to disrupt the planned June 12 Democracy Day nationwide protest, SaharaReporters has gathered. Civil society organisations and human rights activists have called for a nationwide protest on June 12 against the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. According to various publicity posters, the protest will make 14 critical demands which are: Abolish 1999 constitution, End terrorism, End banditry, Isa Pantami must go (Minister of Communications and Digital Economy who expressed sympathy for terrorists), Free all detained activists, End insecurity, Justice for all EndSARS victims, Free Kogi2 (Two anti- President Muhammadu Buhari protesters – Larry Emmanuel and Victor Anene Udoka – who are being detained in Kogi State), Buhari Must Go, Revert electricity tariffs, End ASUP (Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics) strike, Revert fuel price, Revert party deregistration, and Free Nicholas Mbah. Asefon in meeting with Nigeria's Inspector of General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba on Tuesday however promised to mobilise against those planning the June 12 rally, using his power as NANS president, a source told SaharaReporters. “He met with the Inspector of General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba three days ago but the IGP refused to take pictures with him, telling him there was a crisis in NANS and he was not sure Asefon was in control. “Asefon then told him he is the original President with the structure of the students’ body. “He then asked the IGP for assistant and the condition given to him was to mobilise against the people planning protests on June 12 if truly he is the original NANS President. “He immediately promised the IGP to consider it done. He said they will initially join the rally and later disrupt it,” the source said. When contacted by SaharaReporters, Asefon admitted meeting the IGP on Tuesday but described the accusation as a fallacy. “That’s a fallacy, I met the IGP based on the insecurity in the country and I reported to him the stand of Nigerian students. I told him we want the police to be more proactive in protecting Nigerian students. That we want a safe school, that we want a safe campus. And we also discussed with him about our planned security submit," he said. On why NANS won’t be involved in the planned protest, he said, “It's everywhere on social media that some people are asking for #BuhariMustGo #EndNigeria #EndAPC #EndPDP and others which is not the interest of our own agitation. Our agitation is safe campus for Nigerian students.” http://saharareporters.com/2021/06/10/exclusive-nigerian-students-association-president-asefon-meets-police-inspector-general Lalasticlala Mynd44
