babyfaceafrica:What I know is that the 2 weeks lockdown might be longer than planned if we are to survive this. Hunger and hardship will kill faster than the virus. |
When San Francisco’s cases began to drop after two weeks without social gatherings, city officials lifted many of the bans in mid-November of 1918 — a mistake we can learn from. Citizens were still required to wear masks at performances and gatherings, but it wasn’t enough. Like Covid-19, the Spanish Flu spread rapidly between people at public gatherings, and the city didn’t socially distance for long enough. It wasn’t until February 1919 that San Francisco was free of the Spanish Flu. To avoid the same pitfalls that befell the Bay Area in 1918, we have to do one thing: stay home for as long as needed.
|
The masks probably helped slow transmission a little, but they were often poorly made from surgical gauze. Nurses volunteered to sew them in large batches in Oakland, as you can see below, but they were thin and small.
|
Churches were the only gathering spaces allowed to stay open, but worshippers stood outside with face masks on, as we can see in the photo below of St. Mary’s Cathedral, taken by an unknown photographer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that they got the same memo to stay six feet apart. Everyone at the outdoor Sunday service shown in this photo is wearing a mask, which was required by the city of San Francisco. Anyone who didn’t was a “dangerous slacker,”
|
Rather than postponing court cases as we are doing now, the courts chose to hold fresh-air trials outside. As we can see below in this photo taken in Portsmouth Square, it was a bootstrap operation.

Covid-19 has completely changed the way we live, and it feels unprecedented. But the world, and San Francisco, has actually been here before, a little over 100 years ago during the deadliest flu epidemic in American history, referred to as the 1918 Spanish Flu. Back then, the city — like now — shut down schools, emptied streets, improvised hospitals, canceled events, encouraged mask-wearing, and most of all, firmly warned to stay at home. Taking a look back at photos from that year, it can be jarring to see such similarities to today and interesting to see what they did differently (for better or worse.) In the image above, dozens of men lie in a warren of narrow beds separated by simple cloth screens, forming a sea of white. It’s reminiscent of photos we’re seeing today of hospitals crowded with Covid-19 patients around the world. But the men in this photo weren’t sick yet — like us, they’re practicing social distancing. Although… not up to our standards today. These men were sailors at the Naval Training Station on Yerba Buena Island, and the screens around them were an attempt to stop the spread of the disease altering their world. The 1918 flu started at the tail end of World War I, when everyone was exhausted and ready for an end to all the fighting. Little did they know, another deadly battle hadn’t even begun. The first case of what would later become known as the Spanish Flu was detected in March of 1918. The epidemic ended in the summer of 1919 with more than one-third of the world’s population having been infected with the virus and more than 50 million deaths. More people died from the disease than from the war. San Francisco saw 45,000 cases, and over 3,000 deaths. The “Spanish” nickname was coined after Spain’s king at the time, Alfonso XIII, became ill with it and the Spanish media was first to cover the disease, due to fewer restrictions during the war than other countries. Although the actual origin of the epidemic isn’t known for certain, historian J. S. Oxford, among others, hypothesized it actually started in the French trenches. Much like Covid-19, the Spanish Flu spread rapidly around the world. It was far more severe than the common flu and sometimes fatal to even young adults between 20 and 35. Similarly to today’s novel coronavirus, city officials believed a returning traveler brought the first case to San Francisco — back then, it was a San Franciscan coming home from Chicago in September of 1918. By mid-October the city had over 2,000 cases. Officials encouraged citizens to wash their hands frequently, avoid crowds, and be cautious about public transit at rush hour. Still, cases climbed, and San Francisco’s hospitals became overwhelmed. That’s when the city put in place what we now refer to as “shelter-in-place.” After some debate, on October 17 of 1918, the city ordered all “places of public amusement,” like movie theaters and dance halls, to close, in addition to shutting down schools and prohibiting social gatherings. People said I wasn't practising real Christianity hence I got discouraged and stopped going to church. Now they all know that it doesn't work. Just a charade. |
So where are the faith healers of the various religious traditions as the world is trying to find a remedy for Covid-19? Why can’t they command as they do during faith healing sessions that the coronavirus be dead and never infect anybody in Jesus or Allah’s name? Or have they stopped working and performing miracles? Have they ceased dispensing divinely orchestrated healings? Are faith healers, like scientists, also in their labs trying to ascertain a cure from the gods? Has the outbreak of the coronavirus marked an end to faith healing practices in Nigeria, Africa and the world? This question has become necessary because traditional, Christian and Islamic faith healing claims have been rampant. And they include claims of healing persons who are suffering from all sorts of illness, the blind, lame or those with HIV/AIDS. Faith healing is huge business enterprise. Surprisingly, following the Covid-19 crisis, individuals and institutions that claim to possess faith healing powers have been silent, surreally silent. Before the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic, a Nigerian faith healer said that he would go to China and spiritually destroy the virus. However since the virus came to Nigeria, nobody has heard from this prophet of God. He must be self-isolating or socially distancing himself to avoid being infected! Not only him, but other acclaimed faith healers in the country and across Africa have also been so quiet and have refused to make any direct or indirect claim to heal any infected person. Why? What went wrong? Is it because faith healing is no longer effective? Or that faith healing cannot apply to the coronavirus? From T.B Joshua to Enoch Adeboye, from Rev. Oyedepo, Pastor Mboro and Shepherd Bushiri, the celebrity faith healers have gone underground; they are unable to invite infected persons to their churches or worship centers for deliverance. Instead, they are complying with the ban on religious gatherings. So what happened to their acclaimed faith healing powers? Healing has been part of the religious enterprise. It is one of the mechanisms that religions have used to legitimize themselves and mobilize and maintain followership. It is claimed that religious healing powers are drawn from the deity and channeled through a human instrument, a prophet, messenger, priest, rabbi, imam, guru, etc who applies it to the sick and the infirm. By a special connection with the divine, such religious personalities are designated as holy and believed to have the ability to get rid of any disease. Incidentally, religions are known to dispense a special type of healing, a miraculous form of healing. This form of healing is counter-intuitive; it is a cure that defies commonsense. The main characters of the various religions are believed to have had healing powers; they cured persons with various ailments during their lifetime. Believers are of the notion that these prophets could still heal people from wherever they are at the moment. Thus the healing abilities of the divine messengers and incarnates have not ceased and will never cease! Religious healing powers have been transmitted and handed down to their successors and subsequent representatives of the divine or their messengers. Thus every religion is a healing system, a faith-healing system. Every religious center is a faith clinic and every religious leader is a faith doctor. Religious healing formations exist and are in active operation in traditional, Christian, Islamic and mixed strands. Also, Hindu, Confucian, Buddhist, Jewish, Bahai healing enterprises abound. The question is: why have these religious healing facilities been impotent and ineffective in the face of the Covid-19? Why are faith healers and faith healing not reckoned with in the management and containment of the coronavirus? Faith healing is often seen as a demonstration of supernatural benevolence or an affirmation of the transcendental capacity of the deities, spirits, and ancestors. So what happened to these supposed abilities of these superhuman agents? Do these deities exist or are they figments of various cultural imaginations? Why have faith healing potentials failed to manifest as the world grapples to contain the pandemic? Traditional faith healing enterprise claims to draw its potency from the ancestral spirits. It dispenses remedies that the ancestors have revealed, certified and handed down to their chosen human agents. What happened to this healing enterprise? Why has it not advanced a remedy for the coronavirus? Are traditional faith healers also searching for a cure for Covid-19? Is there a break down in communication and transmission between the ancestors and their earthly agents? If the traditional religious healers have no magical remedy for the virus, what does that say about the traditional religious healing formation? Is it a scam? Is it a scheme that self-styled healers use to defraud and exploit desperate gullible folks? Christian and Islamic faith healers also make wild claims about curing incurable diseases, and performing miracles. So where are the miracle mongers as the coronavirus is ravaging the world? Christian healers such as TB Joshua and Shepherd Bushiri have made fortune out of faith healing. They use the Bible to minister to the sick in Jesus' name. Christian faith healers claim to heal people by stretching their hands and speaking in tongues, by administering holy water, holy oil, and holy handkerchief. They claim to exorcise the demons that are responsible for various diseases. Faith healers compel sick people who are undergoing treatment in hospitals to abandon the recommended evidence-based medical procedures for faith healing rituals. They claim that the Christian God is the ultimate healer, that Dr. Jesus is better and superior to earthly medical doctors. Islamic mallams and marabouts also make wild faith healing claims. They invoke the name of Allah and use verses of the Quran to perform rituals that they claim could heal the sick. Or better, are we seeing an end to the faith healing enterprise? - Leo Igwe. http://saharareporters.com/2020/03/28/covid-19-and-end-faith-healing-leo-igwe |
Everrest9:Trump holds press briefing EVERY DAY. Here, we are on our own. |
It is well. |
US now has the most confirmed coronavirus infections anywhere in the world after figures topped 86,000 China has reported 81,000 infections while Italy has 80,404 - though still has the most deaths with 6,820 New York has been hardest hit with almost 40,000 cases, despite Trump saying governor Andrew Cuomo is exaggerating the need for ventilators which are used to keep critical patients alive 11 more states showing epicenter potential, amid fears the entire country could soon by hard-hit with virus Analysts say US death toll could top 80,000 despite Trump suggesting country could reopen on April 12 With 1,200 deaths from the disease the US is still some way behind hardest-hit Italy, where almost 7,000 people have been killed - though disease experts have warned the American death toll could eventually top 80,000. The number of coronavirus infections has now topped half a million worldwide with more than 20,000 dead, as the World Health Organisation warning that the US is likely to overtake Europe as the new epicenter of the disease. Despite the grim figures released Thursday, Donald Trump claimed that figures being released by China - which has claimed zero new domestic infections in recent days - could not be trusted, and that higher rates of testing in the US were behind the surge in cases. He also accused Andrew Cuomo - governor of hardest-hit New York - of exaggerating the state's need for ventilators, a key piece of equipment used to keep coronavirus patients in critical condition alive. 177 people died in New York City alone between Wednesday and Thursday. Meanwhile Dr Anthony Fauci, America's top disease expert, was forced to again pour cold water on Trump's repeated suggestion that the US could be back open for business by April 12. America has now surpassed China and Italy to report the largest number of coronavirus infections anywhere in the world at more than 86,000, though Italy still has the most deaths with more than 6,000 people killed. Coronavirus infections have been following an exponential growth curve in the US, roughly doubling every three days which is the same as was seen in European nations before they went into full lockdown. The US is now on a worse trajectory than China and Italy, which have both put draconian lockdowns into place, and South Korea which was initially one of the virus hotspots but used aggressive testing and contact tracing measures to bring the infection rate under control Figures show that a week after the tenth death New York's toll doubled nearly every 1.5 days; the worst-hit region of Italy, Lombardy, saw a doubling every three days. Cases have also accelerated at a faster rate in the US, than in Italy. Source: Dailymail.co.uk

hupernikao:I understand your point but I believe it is still far from my own perception of the holistic overview of Christianity. Trust me, I have gone extreme in Christianity. I have done all I could to rise above mere physical understanding of it all even to the extent of no longer relying on doctrines preached by pastors. I have seemingly been baptized by the Holy Spirit and grew to the point where I was able to decipher the difference between Christianity and religion - if there is actually something like that. In this case, I am not trying to prove or back the claim that there is a big difference between extreme spirituality and mere physical understanding of doctrines. Christian growth has different meanings to different people. I am not and will not dispute what it means to you. My point is despite all I have been taught, all I have learned on my own, all the extreme lengths I went to get an understanding, the steps I took to get closer to God after having studied the bible day and night in my own Holy spirit-led way, I have realized that nothing beats reality. Let's not look back at how my life was when I was a decent christain. Let's look at my life is now that I have stopped going to church and stopped praying. I no longer have the need to sow seeds or pray to get what I want. I just work hard towards it and I'll get it. I got married to the perfect woman for me without seeking the face of God first or praying hard for it. I knew what I wanted in a woman, I searched for her, found her and married her. And I have been VERY happy since. No prayers involved whatsoever. I have a decent business that provides and caters to my family. I am not very rich but I am not hungry and I have people I pay salaries monthly. I didn't seek the face of God first or prayed before delving into the business. I have never paid tithe or sowed any seeds in 5 years and I have never experienced anything like a devourer. Apart from when my wife gave birth, We have never spent a night in the hospital. My son is whole and hearty. I stopped believing that witches and wizards exist and I have had tremendous peace at night while I sleep. I hear the howlings of an owl and I do not get disturbed that a witch is outside my window. This seemingly "perfect" life I am living isn't supposed to be. It goes against every teaching in the Bible and in church. I am supposed to pray, fast, be holy, not forsake the gathering of the saints, and study the word of God day and night so I can have success (I am having success without studying the Bible). But here I am not doing all of that and yet my life hasn't evaporated into thin air. I don't pay tithe or pay offerings and yet no Cankerworm has come near me. I don't fight spiritual warfares and yet no demons have attacked me. This begs the question... Is it all a lie? Now my present reality is what I have listed above (and lots of others I didn't list). No prayers, no Christianity, no church activities, no spirituality, no holiness, etc. Just me deciding to live my life according to the best of my ability. In my present reality, I haven't been a Christian but my life is good. I kind of enjoy living without the shackles of Christianity. I have freed myself of beliefs and extremisms which I believe are very stressful. These don't mean I don't do what is right. I do not cheat people, I have become friends with everyone and no longer discriminate against anyone. I give to the needy, I buy stuff for people that needs them and I encourage my spouse to do the same also even when we are not buoyant. The appreciation we get is satisfying. In all, I have lived my life as a dedicated Christian and now I am living as a non-christain. It might not appeal to you, but from my perception, the difference is clear. |
