Politics / The Problem Of Corruption In My Country, Nigeria! by Davbams(m): 11:12am On May 09, 2016
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said, "corruption is the greatest bane of our society today". In my country Nigeria, the dishonest use of
position or power to ones advantage is not new and it is the order of the day. According to Transparency International, Nigeria is the
33rd most corrupt country in the world. Corruption is found in every institution: political, military, traditional, judicial institution and so
on. In Nigeria, taking bribes is now a common concept as fancy terms such as "appreciation" has been ascribed to it. Since, bribery
and corruption lie cheek by jowl, you will hardly find one without the other. Although some people believe corruption cannot be totally
eliminated, I am of the opposing opinion that with determination and diligence, corruption can be eliminated. The generally accepted
causes of corruption are greed and ostentatious lifestyles but in Nigeria, these are not the major causes. In order to solve the problem,
the major causes of corruption has to be removed. These include poor emoluments, absence of effective anti-corruption tools, lack of
transparency in the public service, culture and acceptance of corruption by the populace, impunity etc. In a country where according to
the National Bureau of Statistics about 100 million people are living below the poverty line of 1.25USD daily, where the leaders loot
freely, where the anti-corruption tools act like toothless bulldogs, how will a culture of corruption not be given birth to? In my opinion, all
these enabling factors must be removed to eliminate corruption.
