Phones / Re: In Need Of A Good Solar Power Bank by Davebi(m): 7:07pm On Sep 23, 2018
Hi Shalom51

1) Power banks are good for your phone as long as they are not fakes. Some fake power banks have sand in them so no matter how long you charge them for, they won't recharge your phone. And if they do, not for as long as you expect. Either way, make sure you buy a branded power bank. Just search the brand (like HetoGrow solar power bank) online and see what you find. Sellers of fake power banks never have good online presence. You deserve the best! For more info about power banks and quality considerations to look out for, see https://www.hetogrowshop.com/quality. Also follow the link to the User Manual page so you have a good understanding of what to expect before you buy.

2) Fake power banks have a high tendency to explode at any time. Also, all batteries have a risk of explosion. Remember how Samsung batteries randomly got swollen and exploded in 2015/2016? Samsung had to recall the particular model of phone that had that problem. That's what good brands do when there's a problem. Battery type is also risk factor. There are normally 2 types of batteries - Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer. Ion batteries have more power but are also consequently more risky. For more info see https://hetogrow..com/2017/10/which-power-bank-is-good-lithium-ion-or-lithium-polymer.html. However, fake power banks are particularly very risky because the manufactures are mostly crooks that don't care about safety. Good quality power banks should not explode. They'll normally have overcharge and high current protection. When batteries are being charged, the electrodes get excited and emit slightly higer radiation. In this state, there is a higher risk of explosion. That is why @HetoGrow we strongly advised customers not to use their phones when being charged. If you must, use a headphone and ONLY FOR A VERY SHORT TIME. Though the risk is small, it’s best to be safe than sorry especially if you are a very heavy phone user over long periods of time during which risks are heightened and accumulated. Have a look at this blog for more info https://hetogrow..com/2017/10/is-it-ok-to-use-smartphone-whilst-charging-it.html

3) Power from the sun won't damage your phone. Solar power produces DC current and that's basically what batteries are about, both input and output. The adaters you plug your phone into on the wall socket (which is AC current) functions as step down from 220V to 3.7-5Volts that mobile gadgets are powered by. Another thing that happens is that the AC current is converted into DC for storage in your battery. Similar thing happens with Laptop chargers - you'll notice the small box the charger cable plugs into. That box is the adapter that performs the step down and conversion. Phones and power banks also contain internal control circuits that control flow of current. If any of these items is bad or fake, then you may not get as much power as you expect. Also, faulty components can cause damage.

In addition, the size of the solar panel is limited to the size of the power bank hence the amount of power producible from the sun is limited. If you can, get one with extendable and/or detachable solar mat like this one >>> https://www.hetogrowshop.com/solar-power-bank-detachable-solar-mat. If not, not to worry, go for a good brand like HG to ensure the rated capacity is actually, what you get.

One more point, in reality, all power banks lose about 15%-20% power when being used. This is due to heat produced when being used, climate, resistance, natural degradation and some other factors. For instance if your phone battery is 2500 mah, and you buy 10000 mah power bank, you'd think that your phone will be recharged 4 times. Right? Well, wrong! You have to also consider the lost energy. Quick tip - look out for power banks that will give you a bit more - for instance, 10400 mah but advertised as 10k mah. I won’t say more than that smiley

Nairaland / General / How Corrupt Is Nigeria? by Davebi(m): 6:27pm On Sep 18, 2018
I wonder if Naija’s case is even worth discussing anymore.

Let me tell you a short but significant story
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola SAN, was in The UK about 2–3 years ago as keynote speaker at a seminar designed to encourage FDI and inward reinvestment by Diaspora Nigerians. During the interactive session, other Naija’s in the audience who had travelled from Nigeria to attend, accused Diaspora Naijas, of wanting soft landing at the expense of those living and investing in Naija.

After much banter a Naija dude in the audience felt inspired to invest. Buuuuuttttt…… What is the smartest thing to do before starting a business in Nigeria? (https://www.hetogrow.com/what-is-the-smartest-thing-to-do-before-starting-a-business) After investing, the Naira was suddenly devalued by 100% and Naira vs GBP fx rate fell sharply from circa N250 : GBP1 to circa N500 : GBP1. This wasn't good for business continuity. He thought of shutting down immediately but decided to try and wait it out as suggested by friends and associates. However, the pain got too much to bear. He decided to apply for FX from CBN. After much discussion with his bank and enquiry at CBN, it was agreed that the best route was CBN-FORM-Q. He sent in his application with supporting documents (Customs duty payment receipt, tax, form M, other clearing documents, etc) via the approved channel.

8 months later the application was still pending with no reason whatsoever. The guy (a Fellow Chartered Accountant who had worked in Nigeria in Oil & Gas and Banking) decided to use his social networks to find out what’s happening. One of his sources was able to track down the application inside CBN’s TED (Trade and Exchange Department). Apparently the file was pulled out from a drawer (or some location like that) followed by a comment like….”oh! Mr XYZ, we are still waiting for him to come and see us. This is clear solicitation and inducement of bribery.

Shocked by this the dude decided to escalate to Anti-corruption and Ethics Units also at CBN. Soon after frantic calls emanated from the TED about the application and in an attempt to cover their dirty back sides, they asked for more unnecessary and irrelevant documents. Nonetheless, the documents were quickly forwarded.

They then issued a letter instructing a fresh application be submitted via a route the letter clearly stated that the deadline had lapsed. Shocked by the stupidity, the dude queried this, demanding to know why they wanted him to apply for something he evidently wasn’t entitled to nor qualified for. No further response was received from CBN.

After waiting a further few months the dude escalated the matter to PEBEC allegeing incidence of bribery and corruption. In response to PEBEC’s enquiry, the TED denied the allegation and lied that the products for which FX was sought hadn’t been imported into Naija. The dude then responded with some questions
1. If nothing was imported, what was the Form M for?
2. What was the customs duty receipt for?
3. What about the other clearing documents that were submitted?
4. A basic check on the internet would have revealed that the goods were available on Jumia, Konga, OLX, Jiji and own online store as well as many other traditional stores. Was this basic check done?
5. Why did it take 8 months to get a response and only after escalation to Anti Corruption Unit? And what was the “come and see us” comment all about if not to frustrate the guy into doling out some cash before you do your job otherwise forget it?
6. What is the SLA and related CBN policy for such applications?

No further response was received from either CBN or PEBEC.

Meanwhile, in December the following year the dude decided to cut costs by closing his business centre to save on rent. He also let go of staff as he decided to withdraw from Naija - Just like Richard Branson did with his Virgin Atlantic.

Hear him….>>> https://howafrica.com/why-and-how-virgin-atlantic-airways-left-the-nigerian-market-sacked-all-nigerian-cabin-crew-closed-down-call-centre/ “We fought daily battle against government agents who wanted to daily make fortune from us, politicians who saw the government 49% as a meal to seek for all kinds of favour…watchdogs (regulatory body) that didn’t know what to do and persistently asking for bribes at any point…Nigeria people are generally nice but the politicians are very insane…that may be irony because the people make up the politicians…

“But those politicians are selfish…we did make N3billion for the federal government of Nigeria during the joint venture…realising that the government didn’t bring nothing to the table/partnership except dubious debts by the previous carrier, Nigeria Airways…The joint venture should have been the biggest African carrier by now if the partnership was allowed to grow, but the politicians KILLED it…Nigeria is a country we SHALL NEVER consider to doing business again..”

Today we have Nigeria Air. Similar to Nigeria Airways (which the cancer called corruption destroyed) I wonder what will befall it. Success doesn’t come by changing name o. You see, **Virgin Nigeria Airways** was renamed **Air Nigeria **and later changed to **Nigerian Eagle Airlines**. But where is it today? On 6 September 2012 Air Nigeria announced that it had made its staff redundant and ceased operations 4 days later.

Chaiiiiii ….. Naijaaaaa! I weep for you!! Sunny Okosun of blessed memory asked the question - which way Nigeria? I just dey cry oooooo….. tears full my eyes!
**Lyrics for Which Way Nigeria by Sonny Okosun - **Note …my best effort buy you’ll get the gist
“Which way nigeria
which way to go
i love my father land
o yeah
i want to know
yes i want to know
i love my fatherland…….
…. i want to know
which way nigeria is heading to
many years after independence
we still find it hard to start
how long shall we be patient till we reach the promised land, tell me
lets save nigeria
so nigeria wont die……”

Anyways, enough diversion. Back to the main story; as you can see, because some idiots at CBN wanted to be bribed before doing their jobs, landlords lost rental income and people lost their jobs. I can’t help but wonder how many others have suffered a similar fate. For those that paid the bribe and got their FX, how do they recover that cost if not by increasing the price of their goods and services? May be they even just packed up and left. Bribery/Corruption is like malignant cancer or other disease or virus that’s aggressively spreading and destroying Naija.
The question is - How corrupt is Naija? But I ask, what's the impact of of corruption in Nigeria?

Let me tell you another quick story.
About 7 years ago, a friend packed up from the UK and when to invest in Naija. He set up a business centre and quickly employed some people including family members to run it. He imported heavy duty generators and printing equipment. Everything was running smoothly. However, he quickly notice that whenever he travelled out of the country, running costs quickly skyrocketed and everything normalised when he got back in town. This continued for a while and he decided to change tactics by tightening all the loopholes and potholes. Can you see what the image implies? Even potholes tell the story!

The next thing that happened was that the heavy duty generators and other plant and machinery that were in perfecting working condition suddenly started breaking down. Things started disappearing and the business went downhill from there. After 2 years (about 5 years ago now) my friend ran back to the UK looking very emaciated. He said they wanted to kill him and he decided the people weren't worth helping. His summation was the people have a high tendency to cheat and steal. And some believe that they had certain rights they were denied hence felt justified to take what they could.

The guy has since rebuilt his life in the UK and is doing well for himself. Funny thing is that the so called family and friends who stole from him and destroyed his business still call him to ask for assistance. Ha! Needless to say what the guy’s reaction is each time they call him.
How corrupt is Naija? Hmmm… you tell me!
Despite these two/three bad experiences amongst many others I feel sure, we have a lot of honest and hardworking people in Nigeria who just want a chance/creative environment to demonstrate the positive things they can do. Someone asked a question about how other Africans view Nigerians. Have a look at my answer and check out the comments too - Dave Ebi's answer to How do other African countries view Nigeria? (http://qr.ae/TUNMTX) You’ll see we have a lot to offer and many await our rising up. But sadly, we let ourselves down too quickly too often.

The government and politicians have a major role to play in that department. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that there ain't much to hope for in that regard. With that in mind, Nigerians need to wake up and take responsibility. Perhaps start something new and chart a new course for themselves whilst standing up for their rights in a very intelligent and strategic manner rather than being way too myopic and permitting the status quo to persist. Take personal responsibility and stop saying “God will do it”. I get so angry when I hear statements like “Na God go save Naija”. Meanwhile, given the opportunity the various commentators will do a “sharp one on you”. Kaaaai!!!! Naija’s case is both cancer and scorpion’s venom mixed together.
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-0e91a860ff7b15f9bc739b3b1341a1f1

The government needs to stop wasting time and money chasing Foreign Direct Investment. They won’t “REALLY” come. If NaIja entrepreneurs who go back home to invest suffer so much at the hands of fellow Naija’s, why should foreigners “REALLY” come and invest? Look at a China today, for about 20 - 30 years they operated a model closed-economy. During that period they build themselves up and set up infrastructure and systems that would attract FDI’s. When they opened up their economy, the world was wowed and capital started flowing into China almost uncontrollably. Other examples include Singapore and Dubai (a desert country that has built an oasis in the desert). Today, China operates what I call a semi open economy - aggressively encouraging inward flow of key factors of modern production but strictly controlling what’s going out. Smart innit?

I can’t really blame them for doing what they feel they need to do to ensure national dignity and self preservation. Yes, there’s the other side of their story but that’s outside the scope of this question. My main point from their experience is that there’s a good lesson for Naija to learn. Buuuutttt…… will the powers that be learn it? We NEED Inspired Leadership.
I don tire buuuutttt…….. I too like Naija! Up NEPAaaaaaaa!! smiley smiley smiley

Education / Re: Why Are Nigerian Graduates Unemployable by Davebi(m): 1:09pm On May 09, 2018
10 Reasosn Too Many Nigerian Graduates Are Unemployable
1. The country is messed up by corruption and terrible leadership
2. The universities are rather static, producing half baked “hand out” graduates
3. The students are just lazy. Most tend to prefer short cuts rather than burning the midnight oil. When I was a student, I studied to know stuff so well that I could teach other students better that the lecturers taught us. I also had an interest in applying what I learnt to everyday life. Students nowadays don’t test and apply what they learn in school.
4. Poor communication skills. Oral and written communication is so bad I often have headaches conversing with many graduates. There’s gross lack of understanding and application of basic grammar and language structure. Many don't know when to use present, past, future tense let alone past participle or future perfect tense. Many can’t distinguish between “there” and “their”, his or he’s, etc. When you see such poor language on CV’s, applications or proposals, chances are you’ll bin them.
5. Most are unprepared for work. They just want to get a job, lazy about doing nothing and expect to be paid more than their employers.
6. There’s also so much “I know someone that knows someone” mentality; so they think they have right to get the job and expect to be treated specially.
7. Graduates are grossly ill prepared for interviews. They end up not giving a good account of themselves.
..
..
..
10. There’s also the annoying comment or expectation that “God will do it”.

The first important thing to know here is that if you’ve been invited to attend an interview, it means they think you can do the job. To get it, you must be able to demonstrate that you are employable. The second thing to bear in mind is that you are not the only one that wants the job. Don’t waste time praying to get the job. Prepare to get the job. If you're not getting interview invites, here's what you need to do.....

one can get a.power bank to support. Even if you have 10000mAh, Nigeria's power situation would still prove disruptive.

I agree 5k mAh won't last long especially if you use it for browsing, coupled with the weak network signals in Naija. They quickly suck up your credit and power. You'll definitely be fine with a 10k mAh power bank as long as it isn't a fake one smiley

Lol... The thing tire me. Poorly researched articles every where.

Well, if you guys think its a joke and poorly researched, wait till you start having all manner of sickness, if you are one of those who use phones whilst charging. And if you dont do that then you shouldnt be making statements that may make innocent people out there feel its ok to do that.

If you do use phone like that, then I'll tell you that a word is enough for the wise. Let "had I known" come first! Dont wait till you start having related health issues and begin to disturb God running from one hospital, prayer meeting or spiritual man/woman to the other.

Perhaps both of you should do your own research and tender counter factual evidence to support your seemingly misguided assumption.
Phones / Is It True That Branded Power Bank Won’t Explode? by Davebi(m): 3:40pm On Apr 26, 2017
Fa fa faaaa...foul! CAPITAL NO!! Every electronic gadget has a potential risk of explosion. Especially if used inappropriately.

However,
1) Branded products tend to come with a reliable manufacturing guaranty
2) Some like HetoGrow solar power banks - https://www.hetogrowshop.com/shop - tend to have double overcharge and discharge protection. This further reduces the risk of explosion due to volatility of current; and keeps battery charge for longer.
3) Branded power banks also come with detailed product spec and user manual which you must read to understand the limits of the product.

5 Reasons a Power Bank/Smartphone can Explode
1) Composition of the internal control circuit (ICC). It should be well fitted to prevent short circuit (ie, prevent sparks caused by loose wires that touch). It should control temperature and be able to shut down if a set level is exceeded, and to start working again when temperature declines back to as safe level. A key function is also to prevent overcharging and undercharging.
2) Faulty, wrong type, poor quality or recycled batteries
3) Use of improper or... https:///xi0H2J

When gadgets explode the impact can be very devastating. Authentic gadgets tend to have a Caution Section in the user manual. Here’s HetoGrow’s safety tips to note in using your power bank - https://www.hetogrowshop.com/manual

1) Do not drop, knock, disassemble or attempt to repair the product by yourself. I suppose unless if out of warranty & you’re an expert.
2) Avoid USB charge or use of the product in a moist area or wet condition.
3) Do not expose the product to a damaging heat source.
4) Do not throw into water or fire.
5) Keep away from explosive or flammable conditions or substances.
6) Keep away from children. Warranty does not cover wrong usage, human error or damage.
7) If USB charging where current is volatile, keep safe and avoid direct body contact.
8') Keep in normal room temperature. The standard operating temperature is 0°c - 45°c.
9) Keep product safe. As with mobile electronic products, do not abuse or use inappropriately.

For the best chance of avoiding an explosion you are better off with a top brand. See more pics and additional info https://hetogrow..com/2017/10/is-it-true-that-branded-power-bank-wont-explode.html

Think about the impact of the additional radiation on your body. You may not see it now but as you get older it will begin to manifest. Remember, we've not actually had mobile phones for long enough to assess and understand the impact on the human body.

Remember also that no part of the human body can really be replaced and feel the same. Ask anyone that has had a tooth pulled or had a serious medical condition. Radiation can also cause incurable diseases like cancer.

So, I totally agree with @Kondomatc ..."it can wait"
Phones / Why Is My Micro USB Charging Cable Charging At A Very Low Mah? by Davebi(m): 2:39pm On Apr 26, 2017
There are different types of USB cables out there and a lot are fakes. Same problem with power banks and you need to know how to spot them - https:///v5f6j2

What to do
1) check input specs/requirement of your device
2) check capacity of your cable. Also ensure its not broken
3) best to use 2.0 or 3.x USB charging/data cable if possible.  The higher the rating the faster the flow of current for High Speed/High Bandwidth or SuperSpeed transfer.
4) Might be worth checking the charging IC of... http://hetogrow..com/2017/10/why-is-my-micro-usb-charging-cable-charging-at-a-very-low-mah.html

Phones / Is It Ok To Use The Smartphone While It Is Charging With A Power Bank? by Davebi(m): 2:29pm On Apr 26, 2017
Caution! Risk of radiation.
There are health and safety issues to consider. The user manual https://www.hetogrowshop.com/manual and product specification should contain some cautionary notes about charging and bodily contact.

1) You risk exposure to further radiation. But you can reduce this risk if you use earphones. Ordinarily your phone heats up your ears when you use it. Imagine how excited the electromagnetic field gets, with the accompanying radiation, when you charge a battery. You don’t wanna have ear problems when you get older.

2) Another risk to consider is explosion/electrocution. There were several cases of this all over the world between 2014 and 2016. Due to the heat generated it is advised that you
a) do not leave phone under your pillow
b) do not leave phone on your body when in bed and ready to sleep
c) avoid using whilst....https://hetogrow..com/2017/10/is-it-ok-to-use-smartphone-whilst-charging-it.html

Most likely a fake!

Firstly, do you know what mah means? If you think about a car battery which is 35ah (45000mah) to 75ah (75000 mah), you'll begin to see that 50000 mah (50ah) cant really be packed into a mobile power bank of that size.

Go for HetoGrow solar power bank - https://www.hetogrowshop.com/shop. The Quality Assurance page gives informative clues about what to check before you buy including the below. On that page there's a Facebook link that shows pictures of fake power banks filled with sand and fake batteries.

Depends on the age of your phone. Most batteries have limited life cycle. Kinda like a standard car battery, after a while it becomes weak and you need to top up the acid/electrolyte and recharge it. But you can't do that with a phone battery. What you can do however, is get a quality power bank - https://www.hetogrowshop.com/shop. But before you buy, do your research and avoid buying a fake one. See tips on HetoGrow's Quality Assurance webpage.

If however you phone isn't over 18 months old, then your battery may still be in okay condition. The reason for the drain may well then be background apps. These apps that run in the background give us the spectacular performances we love about smartphones. Some of the background apps include your wifi or data. Leaving them on when not needed can be costly. Internet needs a lot of power and excellent network signal to function well. If weak, your phone tries hard to get the job done but in trying hard, it draws more power. See some practical steps to update your settings here - https://hetogrow..com/2017/10/Phone-battery-runs-down-quickly-do-I-need-a-power-bank.html

Also, technically, your phone battery drains faster at 30% than at 80-100%. There are other factors to consider. See HetoGrow's Quality Assurance page - https://www.hetogrowshop.com/quality and learn about:

Do some basic research before you buy such as reading comments on the ones you've seen online. Start with the one at the top. There's a reason its at the top. Also check and see if it has meaningful User Manual, Product Specification and Warranty.

DO NOT buy any mobile phone sized pb offering 20000 or 100000 mah. Its most likely a fake. If you read the below link you'll understand how to do basic weight test and compare to your phone battery; or a car battery that is about 35ah (equivalent to 35000mah) to 75ah (or 75000 mah). Caveat Emptor!

If this happens to you, best to take it out immediately and wipe dry with tissue paper or cloth that is very absorbent.

Best to avoid being in this situation. If you want to buy, go for water proof solar power bank like HG solar power bank chargers -

A good branded power bank is the one that gives you a warranty and provides meaningful user manual that is easy to understand. It should also be exactly what it “says on the tin” if not better.

There are too many fake products out there and it is very important to know how to spot and avoid them. HetoGrow’s long-ish Quality Assurance page explains specific things to look out for, key questions to ask and what the answers should be. Its a “must read”.

You should definitely go for HetoGrow Solar Power Bank - https://www.hetogrowshop.com/shop
