9jii: Jesus Christ we live in a democratic society. What took place today does not fall on Jonathan. It falls on David mark and whoever was in charge of security at that time. So u think the police forces called Jonathan and asked him to give them permission to storm parliament. This is similar to someone blaming Jonathan for the rampaging soldiers in Lagos that burned down BRT buses a couple months ago just because he is commander in chief of the army. |

I posted this in another thread... Its funny that APC does not seem to have a party platform. For a party that claims to be revolutionary and progressive the only thing I ever here from them is Jonathan this, Jonathan that... We are 2 and a half months away from elections and I have no idea what this party and her presidential candidates stand for. I mean what is their opinion on the local content policy in the oil and gas sector? Do they think it should be implemented in other sectors of the economy? what is their stance on the PIB Bill? (VERY IMPORTANT!!!) What do they think about the governments auto policy and its implementation? what do they think about Jonathans agricultural agenda? Do they think Nigeria is practicing true federalism? Do they think improvements can be made in its implementation? What steps are they going to take to curb corruption? What is the their stance on Nigeria's decision to refuse to sign the EU EPA agreement? (VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!!) Do they support resource control? How do they intend to put a stop to Boko harams activities and bring peace to the North? (VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!) How do they intend to solve our power problem? Do they agree with Jonathan's privatization of PHCN? What do they think of the federal governments plans to privatize the airports? How do they plan to diversify the economy? Are they pro big government or small government? Do they agree with the federal governments plans to privatize various sectors of the economy? What do they think about the current state of Nigeria's foreign policy? How do they intend to put a stop to Gas pipeline Vandalism in the country? (VERY IMPORTANT!!!) What is their thoughts on the Chinese and their growing footprint in Nigeria? Do they support the federal governments decision to give so many contracts worth billions of dollars to Chinese firms? MissMeiya: You have got to be kidding me... This is the problem with nairaland. There can never be discourse because no one is willing to present their points and be open for debate. If they can't dispute your points the next thing they do is berate you or insult you. look, The comment you made does not make sense. We have been talking about austerity measures, I raised a point that the govt will not punish the masses before feb 2015 due to thier desire to get re-elected. You then asked if 2015 was the end of the world. Again what do you mean by that? Are u questioning the Importance of feb 2015? If so then I have already told u why 2015 is important. 1 Like |

MissMeiya: You have got to be kidding me. Let me make it simple February 2015 = election Jonathan want reelection Jonathan not up tax Nigerians before 2015 election Jonathan defend naira before 2015 election Jonathan not want make life harder for Nigerians before election Why? Because Jonathan want win 2015 election |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 1:48pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
arsetalks: Nope we have about 38 billion dollars of reserves left. And yes the fall was attributed to market forces but ofcourse the CBN and the oil companies selling dollars to the market is what was slowing down the slide. Your talk about govt cost not being cut and GEJ feeding costs are a different topic all together. Plus If the govt begins to cut capital expenditure and reduce the wages of civil servants without cutting down on their own expenditure then ofcourse we will have a problem. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 1:35pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
arsetalks: Nope that's what we call market forces. You have to remember that these past 2 months has seen a drastic fall in oil prices. We have never had such a drastic fall since the 2008 crisis. This drastic fall is having an effect on the stock market and the naira. When oil stabilizes then the stock market and the naira should do so as well Plus when I talk about devaluation I am talking about 200 naira to 1 dollar. That is what some economic analysts are trying to tell the govt to do. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 1:31pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
pro2010: This whole talk of austerity is due to the present fall in oil prices. Oil is not going to stay this low. Oil is very oversold and is touching an enormous support area ($70 a barrel) by feb 2015 I see oil stabilizing between 80-90 dollars a barrel which is a good price for the nigerian govt. so there will be no need for austerity. You also have to remember that due to the trade surpluses nigeria has been having over the years, our government has been able to run a budget deficit and can still execute capital projects. One other thing to look out for is Russia. These sanctions are taking a toll on the country and if Russia is to implode look for oil to shoot up to historical levels even with the increase in shale production from the U.S. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 1:13pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
MissMeiya: No need to pity me. Let us both wait and see what the govt will include as luxury items. I can assure you whatever they include will have very little effect if any at all on the average man. After all 2015 elections are around the corner. Seriously I shouldn't be telling you guys this. All you guys claim to be such geniuses who are never easily fooled by the government but yet you guys don't understand basic political strategy. Impoverishing the masses further shortly before an election is off the cards right now. So no increase in taxes and no naira devaluation before feb 2015. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 1:06pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
arsetalks: They Will NOT devalue the naira before 2015 elections. Every Nigerian should know this by now. Just as they will not increase taxes on the populace before the elections, this is basic political strategy. Why do you think the cbn and oil companies have been using our reserves to support the naira these past 2 months? Again they will not devalue before feb 2015. Also by the time February 2015 arrives the value of oil should stabilize somewhere between 80-90 dollars which is more than enough to run Nigeria. So all this austerity will talk will be long forgotten. Plus due to nigeria running a surplus for the past few years The government has the ability to lower the benchmark oil price and still execute capital projects. ( that's good for the masses) Nigeria has problems but the country is no where as Bleep.ed as some political analysts want to paint it. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 12:50pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
arsetalks: We are not talking about oil prices. This thread is about austerity measures the government is taking which Is limiting public office holders travels and increase in taxes on ostentatious goods and oil is NOT an ostentatious good. Again this thread is about the steps govt is taking to cushion the effect of falling oil prices. What you are talking about is a whole other topic. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 12:14pm On Nov 17, 2014 |
Gistdutch: First they are limiting travel for public office holders. This means less money coming from the masses to support thier trips. The second is by increasing taxes on luxury goods only the rich will be affected. These are not regular goods that the average Nigerian can afford. Such things like Wine, Armoured vehicles, Diamonds, Yahcts, high level cars like porshe, e.t.c Also since majority of our luxury goods are imported the increase in taxes will not be able to touch the common man. Infact an increase in taxes on a luxury good like wine will be good for the economy. Since a substitute good to wine is beer, I see more rich Nigerians spending their money on beer, and since we manufacture our own beer in this country it means more money going into the economy. Think about the 68,000 households in abuja with $150,000 of spending power paying higher taxes and channeling their money back into the economy. “We have the benefit of being able to compare those two markets. In Abuja, there are over 68,000 households with annual expenditure of over $150,000 per household which is quite fantastic. For a retailer and investor, this statistics is quite compelling and emboldening. We know all these because we conduct our research which emboldens us in our investments.” http://businessdayonline.com/2013/10/equity-investor-targets-150000-household-spend-in-abuja-with-jabi-mall/#.VGnYAvnF-So |

retepmurt: It's not about believing the government. Its about having an understanding of politics. Jonathan is NOT going to increase the burden on the masses by cutting capital expenditure or increasing taxes. This is because he wants to be reelected come 2015. Do you know what will happen to his supporters base if he were to increase taxes on the masses? Its the same reason why the government has vehemently refused to devalue the naira from our current levels to 200 to 1 dollar and have instead opted to use our reserves to support the naira. Its all for the 2015 elections. |
Business / Re: Breaking!!! Prepare For AUSTERITY - FG by davitogreat(m): 11:40am On Nov 17, 2014 |
retepmurt: I am looking at the uninformed posts in this thread and shaking my head... Nobody knows what luxury/ostentatious goods are. Plus the increase in taxes on ostentatious goods cannot be passed on to the masses since the all of our ostentatious goods (apart from armoured vehicles) are imported. plus in regards to policies: We are not talking about eventually, we are talking about now. Plus the current government is not going to enact any policies that will affect the masses negatively due to the incoming 2015 elections. Also by February I see the price of oil coming of these lows to somewhere between 80 and 90 dollars so any cutting measures that affect the masses will not take place. |

retepmurt: Did u read the article? They are going to limit foreign visits by public officials and raise taxes on luxury goods. Or do non of you know what Luxury goods are? Products which are not necessary but which tend to make life more pleasant for the consumer. In contrast with necessity goods, luxury goods are typically more costly and are often bought by individuals that have a higher disposable income or greater accumulated wealth than the average. http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/luxury-goods.html In Nigeria things like wine, armored vehicles, yachts, diamonds would be classified as luxury goods. They never said they would cut public spending. |

the only people that are going to be affected by these austerity measure are the elites. So I don't know why people are all up in arms about it. These means the decline in oil is making our leaders wake up to their responsibilities. 3 Likes |

Nope. Blacks make up 12% of the us population and are an integral part of American history. They were brought there as slaves and on their backs and with their blood America was built. They went through oppression, dehumanization and slavery (all of which they still experience today apart from slavery) and yet a black man was able to rise to the most powerful position in the land. A white man ruling nigeria or any other african country can never be compared. After all white men conquered africa and still control many parts of Africa today economically. (Francophone Africa is a good example) |

Adminisher: You dont need the economist to know the naira was overvalued. Also I just like to post links to backup my statements. Plus the economist is a reputable source or do you think those illiterate Nigerians who keep blabbing about how our economy was well managed and our naira was stable under abacha are right? Plus tell me what Nigeria was producing and exporting that justifies abacha pegging the naira at 22 to 1 dollar? Again the naira under abachas regime never followed market forces. It was fixed and manipulated by him. It is only from Obasanjors regime that the naira has been trading under market forces, and as we can all see the naira has continued to weaken due to -Increase In spending power of the populace -increase in foreign and local investments in various sectors of the economy (these investors need things like raw resource materials and machinery to do their work and since Nigeria doesn't produce either to satisfy demand they will import) -decline in value of oil (basically increase in importation of goods into the country and falling oil prices is the reason for the naira weakening) 10 Likes |

i find it funny that he is talking about the Naira being Stronger under Abachas Regime. I guess he does not know that the naira never followed market levels and was grossly overvalued under Abacha's regime and it was a way Abacha and his cronies could make quick cash on the heads of the masses. http://www.economist.com/node/273201 Mr Obasanjo has taken effective action to start expunging the virus of state intervention from the Nigerian economy. Most important, he has liberalised the exchange rate again. Under Abacha, the naira was grossly overvalued, but only the ruler's cronies could buy hard currency at the official rate. They could thus make millions in minutes by buying dollars cheaply and selling them expensively on the black market to businessmen who needed them. Now, although the naira is not yet fully convertible, its rate is set daily at more or less market levels, and oil companies are allowed to sell dollars direct to anyone who wants to buy them. So the gulf between the official and the black-market exchange rate has all but vanished, and with it the opportunity for arbitrage. Mr Obasanjo has also ended the scam whereby officials deliberately created petroleum shortages to drive up the black-market price, thus enabling them to make a huge profit on reselling fuel bought at low official prices. The price at the pumps is still fixed by the government, but no longer at absurdly low levels. 9 Likes |

iamord: Nigeria is the only west African country that has not agreed to the agreement and because of that our products have been taxed at European ports. Nigerian cocoa-processing companies say the cost of exporting their products to Europe has been inflated by 30 percent because of a stalemate in agreeing new trade terms with the European Union. Nigerian cocoa butter and cake exports are charged from 4.2 percent to 6.1 percent of freight-on-board values as taxes at EU ports without an agreement, Felix Oladunjoye, executive secretary of the Cocoa Processors Association of Nigeria, or Copan, said in a phone interview today from Lagos, the commercial capital. aresa: show me Donald dukes achievements in this thread. and again village roads are a good thing. A responsible government never negelects her rural dwellers. plus providing drinking water to RURAL TOWNS AND VILLAGES is easily one of the greatest achievements in this country to date. How many state governors even remember their rural citizens. The days of our people going to streams to fetch water is over. Now the water board has laid pipes and connected them to the residents of various communities. This is what development is about. Cross river states developments might not be flashy but I can assure you they are making a far greater impact on the lives of the citizens when compared to other governments. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/potable-water-for-cross-river-communities/182926/ In each community with water project visited, excitement was on the faces of the natives. They literarily rolled out the drums in celebration. At Itigidi, a man, John Eja said: “We are delighted that our children will no longer die as a result of waterborne diseases. The time spent travelling to fetch water that is not safe can be used for something profitable by our children and wives. This is a policy that has direct bearing on the lives of the people and it should be commended by everyone. This is a wonderful project for us. For years we have stayed without water and our people fetched from well, river or contaminated streams. We thank Governor Imoke for this gesture because this will help us a lot as water was our main problem. We pray that God bless him for us.”
