Next is the calabar specialist Hospital.
Due for commission march 2015

[img]A consortium comprising Utopian Healthcare Consulting, SIMED (the Netherlands), Cure Healthcare Management Services (Hong Kong), CCP (Nigeria), Healthfore (India), and ITB (Nigeria) has recent signed of a public-private partnership agreement with the Cross River State government for the development and operations of a new 105 bed referral hospital in Calabar, Nigeria.
AIH-Calabar-Arial250.jpg
The hospital is expected to provide high quality advanced secondary clinical and diagnostic services to the 500,000 citizens of the greater Calabar area as well as all citizens of Cross River State.
The project will span 10 years, including 2 years for construction and 8 years for operation, and is anticipated to be operational in 2015. The construction and equipment expenditures of the project will be financed by the government.
The consortium will bear some project development costs, deliver a turnkey hospital, and will then be responsible for running the hospital operations under the terms defined in the PPP agreement.
IFC was the lead transaction advisor to the government of Cross River State in this transaction. The project received support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Netherlands-IFC Partnership Program (NIPP), the South Africa’s technical assistance trust fund, and HANSHEP, a group of development agencies and countries, seeking to improve the performance of the non-state sector in delivering better healthcare to the poor.[/img]

first is the cross rievr waterboard.

The cross river water board was established long before Liyel Imokes administration, but the board suffered a lot of neglect and never functioned at full capacity. Now with the intervention from the past and current state governments and the world bank the cross river water board supplies safe drinking water to calabar, ikom, ogoja, calabar south, akampka, yakurr, abi, obudu and many other areas.

http://allafrica.com/stories/201407080463.html
Undeniably, Governor Liyel Imoke keeps telling those who care to know that his investment in water provision is deliberate in a state that is a tourism hub and among the states with the fastest growing economy in the country.

And with more investors setting up in Cross River State in recent times, the governor does not want factories to lack water for production, just as he's committed to ensuring that citizens have access to safe drinking water.

Indeed, water provision in Cross River has become a case study in the country and many state governments have continued to visit Cross River State to understudy its example. To be sure, the states that have approached ADB for similar loans are first referred to Cross River State.

Through this tour, it was revealed that 86 communities in the state have been provided with water valued at N12.5 billion. This is strictly by the Imoke government. These communities cut across the length and breadth of the state. More are billed to benefit from the next phase of the project according to the government officials who guided journalists during the tour.

A breakdown of these communities shows that 16 are benefiting in Yala, 20 in Obubra, 14 in Itigidi (Abi) phase II, 12 in Obubra, 13 in Ogoja, 9 in Ikom, 2 in Ikom phase 2 and one in Itigidi phase I. The second phase will focus on those local government areas that are yet to benefit from the water provision programme of the government.

Yep. Cross river state is no more an oil producing state. So the government has had to work towards establishing alternative streams of income.

Plus the state has a lot of debt due to the tinapa project from the previous administration.

I have always seen fashola's government as a bit overrated and elitist. The fact that he is being touted as the best leader Nigeria has to offer really shows you that Nigeria still has major mountains to climb. Hopefully the next governor of lagos whether (APC or PDP) governs the state better than fashola.

sidenote: One underrated governor in my opinion is Liyel Imoke. The work he has been doing in cross river state with the limited resources and the debt he inherited from his predecessor has been encouraging. I am especially impressed with the rural road and water projects, smart city initiative and the land reform project of his administration.

wow you mean nigerians are the one now making that stuff? That's cool. Hmm the whole thing look big and smart, only smart people can make it and we in Nigeria we are very smart.

yes its a great achievement. There are a lot of other manufacturing feats going on in the oil sector of Nigeria today due to the local content policy. its sad that our media does not really cover them.

here is another great achievement

2700-tonne Made-in-Nigeria CPF Modules Unveiled

Daewoo Nigeria Limited (DNL) has completed the fabrication of the first Nigerian 2,700-tonne Central Processing Facility (CPF) Modules. The project, which forms part of the engineering procurement component of Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC) Otumara Associated Gas Solution (AGS) awarded in 2011, was recently unveiled in Warri, Delta State.

The project, which has been lauded by sectoral players, gives fillip to the Nigerian local content policy in the oil and gas sector.

Managing director of DNL, Mr. P.S. Lim, stated this much at the unveiling ceremony, when he said that the project was fully realised in Nigeria with productive cooperation from key contributors involving major and sub-contractors including NETCO, AMAZON, NIGERCHIN, DORMAN LONG, PI-MOFF partnering DNL to meet completion.

“The Otumara CPF Modules completion has contributed significantly in pushing Nigeria towards becoming the undisputed hub of oil and gas development in Africa,” said Lim.

“The joy for Daewoo is in being an agent for practically demonstrating the spirit of the Nigerian Content Act which translated into provision of several direct and indirect jobs, discouraging capital flight, and boosting local capacity in course of the project.”

For his part, managing director of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and country chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mutiu Sunmonu, has said that the Otumara Associated Gas Solution Project would also generate six megawatts daily.

“Today, we are all witnesses to the completion of the fabrication and integration of Otumara AGS Central Processing Facilities (CPF); the part of the gas plant where a nominal 20 million standard cubic feet (20mmscf) of gas will be compressed and six megawatts (6MW) of electricity generated daily,” said Sunmonu, who was represented by the general manager, Toyin Olagunju, at the modules completion ceremony yesterday

“A few weeks from now, these CPF components made up of the gas compression, gas conditioning/processing and the power generation modules will be transported to the project site for installation on specially constructed pile beam foundations.”

Dr. David Ige, who represented the group managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum orporation (NNPC), said the project also secured 60,000 bpd of oil.

“It is a big boost towards ending gas flares in Nigeria. It demonstrates that day after day we are setting new standards and when we set our hearts to it, we can end gas flaring in Nigeria,” Ige said.

Executive director, Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Engineer Ernest Nwapa, agreed that the project was a validation of the Nigerian Content Act.

+$4.5Million Investment in GE's Onne facility in River State
All-Nigerian Subsea Wellheads Fabrication Team of Leaders and Engineers
Assembly Operation Creating Business Development Opportunities for Local Suppliers

GE Oil and Gas Commence Fabrication of Subsea Wellheads in Nigeria

After nearly 4 years of planning, and over $4.5 million investment in facilities, recruitment and training, GE has announced that it now has the capability to fabricate subsea wellheads in Nigeria for its Oil and Gas customers. The announcement was made in Lagos by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of GE Oil and Gas, Uzo Nwagwu.

This is a major milestone for GE Oil & Gas in efforts to substantially increase the local capabilities of its operations in Nigeria through ambitious technology programs and human capacity development. With this achievement, GE's customers operating in Nigeria no longer need to import these fabricated wellheads, thereby reducing costs and improving delivery time.

The developments at GE's Onne facility in River State align with the Nigerian Federal Government's local content law and desire for increased manufacturing capacity, skill acquisition and technology transfer. However, for GE, this milestone represents a lot more than complying with the laws on local content.

"GE Oil & Gas have a vision to 'Fuel the Future' by delivering cost-effective customer solutions on-time wherever they are needed across the globe," explained Uzo Nwagwu. "By investing now in the development of our people and facilities we are able to localize subsea wellhead assembly and partner with local suppliers to create a sustainable business for Nigeria." Nwagwu referred to the establishment of the Subsea wellhead fabrication capabilities in Onne as "a true win-win proposition for the indigenous industry and the Nigerian Content agenda."

The Onne facility in River State has been operating since 2002. This purpose-built facility is the first and only quayside facility of its calibre in Nigeria and employees over 200 people. It has an exceptional safety record, and is a cornerstone in GE's commitment to the country's Oil & Gas industry. With continually expanding capabilities, the site provides complete assembly, testing and life cycle service for subsea tree systems, subsea control modules, specialty connectors and pipe. It also includes a dedicated on-site training center and offers broad business development opportunities for local suppliers.

Politics / Flour Mills Inaugurates N5b Ultra-modern Feed Plant In Calabar by davitogreat(m): 6:24pm On Nov 08, 2014

The Eastern Premier Feed Mills Company Limited, a subsidiary of Flour Mills of Nigeria, on Monday inaugurated its N5bn ultra-modern integrated feed mill in Calabar.

Managing Director of the company, Mr Rolf Burchardt, said the mill with a total installed capacity of 370, 000 metric tons per annum is the biggest single ultra-modern automated animal feed in sub-Saharan Africa.

He said the plant would serve farmers in the South-South, South-East and North-Central regions of the country.

He said the Cross River State capital was the ideal location for the $30m investment.

He said the development was also to further promote the agricultural transformation agenda of the Federal Government.

Burchardt said they will keep investing in new opportunities.

Chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr John Coumantaros, said Calabar was a good place to do business.

He said the mill would provide 1, 000 direct jobs and 5, 000 more through generation of other businesses.

Minister of Trade and Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Olusegun Aganga, said the company’s investment of N5bn was a clear statement of the level of confidence it has in the economy.

He said seventy per cent of raw materials for the mill will be sourced locally.

Aganga said the country can no longer depend on oil hence the Federal Government was pursuing the diversification of the economy through its Industrial Development Plan.

He lauded Flour Mills for keying into the plan.

Also speaking, Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, said the development was a celebration of confidence in the economy of Nigeria.

He assured the company of government’s support, emphasising that there was need to grow an economy not sustained by proceeds of oil.

Politics / NHIS Takes Health Insurance To Grassroots by davitogreat(m): 5:56pm On Nov 08, 2014
In thirty days, hundreds of thousands of Nigerians across the six geo-political zones of the country had a feel of the essence of a health insurance plan.

The eight-city experiential campaign train which took the form of village square meetings, road shows and market storms, by the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, was taken to the doorstep of the people at the grassroots, was to sensitisation campaign programme designed to increase mass awareness in the bid to open up avenues for better healthcare provision for the populace.
It began in the South West from Lagos to Oyo, then to the South East through Asaba, Onitsha and Enugu. From there, the train moved to the North East through Bauchi, Kaduna and Kano in the North West, before culminating in Abuja in the North Central zone.
The health insurance platforms range from the National Mobile Health Insurance Programme, NMHIP; Public Primary Schools Health Insurance Programme, PPSHIP,; tertiary Institution Social Health Insurance Programme, TISHIP, and Community Based Social Health Insurance Programme, CBSHIP, were targetted to specifically offer access to a comprehensive array of healthcare services.
They include pediatric/antenatal care, minor surgeries, treatment for malaria, typhoid and minor infections, HIV/AIDS and STD Management, eye care, Family Planning and much more.
In Lagos, the campaign took off from Ikeja ending with a village square meeting at Tabon-Tabon community in Agege Local Government Area, where community leaders were educated on how to register and benefit from NHIS programmes. NHIS Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs. Evelyn Olokun represented by Senior Manager, Chika Amahalu noted: “The Community based Programme is the one that will serve the community people more.
The good thing about this is that the Community chooses the hospital to use, and manage their contributions by themselves through a 7-man Board of 7-man Board of Trustees that will be formed to oversee the programme for the community.
And because the money is collectively paid, it runs into a “pool” of funds that will enhance the capacity of the community to take advantage of the NHIS Community-Based Social Insurance Programme”.
In Kaduna, at the popular Kawo Park, Chairman of the Kawo NURTW, Ahaji Adamu Mohammed Abaji, remarked: “We are happy to hear the good news from NHIS today.
In the past we thought government was deceiving us. Most of us never believe in the programme. But with what we are witnessing in Kaduna today, we would have a change of mind. We are going to set in motion necessary machinery to ensure all our members across Kaduna State are registered with the scheme.”
Earlier, Head, Contribution Management, NHIS Kaduna Zonal office, Nasiru Yakubu reiterated determination to make healthcare affordable to the less-privileged. “The new management of NHIS is poised to register a minimum of 30 million lives by the end of 2015. We are committed to achieving this goal, and even surpassing it. That is why this campaign train is in Kaduna today.”

America and the other developed countries are great today because ordinary citizens moan and complain for the government to be better. Silence in the face of societal ill is the worst disease.

Americans and other citizens of developed countries complain but at least they contribute their quota to the development of their country and when the situation arises they will defend their country's with their lives.

Many africans on the other hand don't do shyt. they only know how to cry and complain and hide in foreign lands, but guess what... While africans are b.itching and hiding in foreign lands, foreigners like the chinesse, Indians, Europeans and Arabs are doing thier research and making inroads into the african continent and establishing businesses and acquiring wealth.

Let me tell you. Forget the nigerian government for a minute. Right now there are so much opportunities in nigeria. If only privileged Nigerians like the thread starter could have thier eyes opened to it.

After all the CEO and founder of interswitch Mitchell elegbe is someone who schooled and lived in America, but unlike thread starter he saw the opportunities in nigeria and decided to return to the country and with his limited business knowledge he established interswitch ltd which contributes to the nations economy and employs thousands of Nigerians.

The truth is my anger is more focused towards the privileged Nigerians like the thread starter. If a poor nigerian man hawking on the street, or a market woman struggling to survive said this I would not blame them, but when someone who is privileged and educated like the thread starter begins to think like this considering the wealth of knowledge he has available then something is wrong.

Let's live the man out of this. Two wrongs can never make a right. Since the woman left office, our airports have started failing. Her crime was 250m. Then what about the governor of Abia or Enugu who sacked his deputy to having a poultry farm or the Gov Amaechi who spent 1.04b on Ebola or Gov fashola who is building a rail line that is 3times costlier than the a rail line of longer distance built in Abuja or almost all the Governors in the country whom on a monthly base embezzle the LG allocations of their states or the National Assembly that take 1/3 of the national budget or the civil service who even aid this corruption. looking at the majority of the comments in this thread. You can tell why Nigeria is the way it is today. A bunch of degree carrying illiterates.

Plus there was never any outright purchase of bullet proof cars done by stella. There was only a lease finance arrangement.

http://allafrica.com/stories/201310290267.html

Also, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has insisted it has "no documents for the purchase of bulletproof cars" for minister of aviation Princess Stella Oduah but has documents for "the lease finance arrangement".

According toNCAA's spokesman Mr Fan Ndubuoke, "NCAA has documents relating to the Lease Finance arrangement for the procurement of Operational, Security and Safety Vehicles for the use of the Authority as provided for in its 2013 Appropriation".

Ndubuokewas reacting to reports that the agency failed to supply any document to the Freedom of Information Act request made by civil rights lawyer Mr Femi Falana (SAN). Ndubuokesaid the reports are misleading.

He said: "It is pertinent to re-state here that NCAA indeed has no documents for the purchase of bulletproof cars for the honourable minister of aviation as demanded by the Lagos Lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, (SAN).

"Instead, NCAA has documents relating to the Lease Finance arrangement for the procurement of Operational, Security and Safety Vehicles for the use of the Authority as provided for in its 2013 appropriation.

"All these documents are already in the public domain and have also been deposited with the various committees looking into the matter. The public is hereby enjoined to discountenance the innuendoes which tended to suggest that NCAA does not have documents at all regarding the bulletproof vehicles.

"It must be made clear here that Mr Femi Falana (SAN) specifically requested documents for the procurement of vehicles for the honourable minister of aviation."

Now since the lease arrangements are available to the public to purchase, the court was right to dismiss the suit.

The grounds on which General Buhari is being promoted as the alternative choice are … not only shaky, but pitifully naive. History matters. Records are not kept simply to assist the weakness of memory, but to operate as guides to the future. Of course, we know that human beings change. What the claims of personality change or transformation impose on us is a rigorous inspection of the evidence, not wishful speculation or behind-the- scenes assurances. Public offence, crimes against a polity, must be answered in the public space, not in caucuses of bargaining. In Buhari, we have been offered no evidence of the sheerest prospect of change. On the contrary, all evident suggests that this is one individual who remains convinced that this is one ex-ruler that the nation cannot call to order.Buhari ? need one remind anyone - was one of the generals who treated a Commission of Enquiry, the Oputa Panel, with unconcealed disdain. Like Babangida and Abdusalami, he refused to put in appearance even though complaints that were tabled against him involved a career of gross abuses of power and blatant assault on the fundamental human rights of the Nigerian citizenry.Prominent against these charges was an act that amounted to nothing less than judicial murder, the execution of a citizen under a retroactive decree.Does Decree 20 ring a bell? If not, then, perhaps the names of three youths - Lawal Ojuolape (30), Bernard Ogedengbe (29) and Bartholomew Owoh (26) do. To put it quite plainly, one of those three Ogedengbe - was executed for a crime that did not carry a capital forfeit at the time it was committed. This was an unconscionable crime, carried out in defiance of the pleas and protests of nearly every sector of the Nigerian and international community religious, civil rights, political, trade unions etc.Buhari and his sidekick and his partner-in-crime, Tunde Idiagbon persisted in this inhuman act for one reason and one reason only: to place Nigerians on notice that they were now under an iron, inflexible rule, under governance by fear. The execution of that youthful innocent for so he was, since the punishment did not exist at the time of commission - was nothing short of premeditated murder, for which the perpetrators should normally stand trial upon their loss of immunity. Are we truly expected to forget this violation of our entitlement to security as provided under existing laws? And even if our sensibilities have become blunted by succeeding seasons of cruelty and brutality, if power itself had so coarsened the sensibilities also of rulers and corrupted their judgment, what should one rightly expect after they have been rescued from the snare of power. At the very least, a revaluation, leading hopefully to remorse, and its expression to a wronged society. At the very least, such a revaluation should engender reticence, silence. In the case of Buhari, it was the opposite. Since leaving office he has declared in the most categorical terms that he had no regrets over this murder and would do so again.Human life is inviolate. The right to life is the uniquely fundamental right on which all other rights are based. The crime that General Buhari committed against the entire nation went further however, inconceivable as it might first appear. That crime is one of the most profound negations of civic being. Not content with hammering down the freedom of expression in general terms, Buhari specifically forbade all public discussion of a return to civilian, democratic rule. Let us constantly applaud our media those battle scarred professionals did not completely knuckle down. They resorted to cartoons and oblique, elliptical references to sustain the people's campaign for a time-table to democratic rule. Overt agitation for a democratic time table however remained rigorously suppressed military dictatorship, and a specifically incorporated in Buhari and Idiagbon was here to stay. To deprive a people of volition in their own political direction is to turn a nation into a colony of slaves. Buhari enslaved the nation. He gloated and gloried in a master-slave relation to the millions of its inhabitants. It is astonishing to find that the same former slaves, now free of their chains, should clamour to be ruled by one who not only turned their nation into a slave plantation, but forbade them any discussion of their condition. So Tai Solarin is already forgotten? Tai who stood at street corners, fearlessly distributing leaflets that took up the gauntlet where the media had dropped it. Tai who was incarcerated by that regime and denied even the medication for his asthmatic condition? Tai did not ask to be sent for treatment overseas; all he asked was his traditional medicine that had proved so effective after years of struggle with asthma!Nor must we omit the manner of Buhari coming to power and the pattern of his corrective rule.Shagari's NPN had already run out of steam and was near universally detested except of course by the handful that still benefited from that regime of profligacy and rabid fascism.Responsibility for the national condition lay squarely at the door of the ruling party, obviously, but against whom was Buharis coup staged? Judging by the conduct of that regime, it was not against Shagaris government but against the opposition. The head of government, on whom primary responsibility lay, was Shehu Shagari. Yet that individual was kept in cozy house detention in Ikoyi while his powerless deputy, Alex Ekwueme, was locked up in Kiri-kiri prisons. Such was the Buhari notion ofequitable apportionment of guilt and/or responsibility. And then the cascade of escapes of the wanted, and culpable politicians. Manhunts across the length and breadth of the nation, roadblocks everywhere and borders tight as steel zip locks. Lo and behold, the chairman of the party, Chief Akinloye, strolled out coolly across the border. Richard Akinjide, Legal Protector of the ruling party, slipped out with equal ease. The Rice Minister, Umaru Dikko, who declared that Nigerians were yet to eat f'rom dustbins - escaped through the same airtight dragnet. The clumsy attempt to crate him home was punishment for his ingratitude, since he went berserk when, after waiting in vain, he concluded that the coup had not been staged, after all, for the immediate consolidation of the party of extreme right-wing vultures, but for the military hyenas. The case of the overbearing Secretary-General of the party, Uba Ahmed, was even more noxious. Uba Ahmed was out of the country at the time. Despite the closure of the Nigerian airspace, he compelled the pilot of his plane to demand special landing permission, since his passenger load included the almighty Uba Ahmed. Of course, he had not known of the change in his status since he was airborne. The delighted airport commandant, realizing that he had a much valued fish swimming willingly into a waiting net, approved the request. Uba Ahmed disembarked into the arms of a military guard and was promptly clamped in detention.Incredibly, he vanished a few days after and reappeared in safety overseas. Those whose memories have become calcified should explore the media coverage of that saga. Buhari was asked to explain the vanished act of this much prized quarry and his response was one of the most arrogant levity. Coming from one who had shot his way into power on the slogan of discipline, it was nothing short of impudent.Shall we revisit the tragicomic series of trials that landed several politicians several lifetimes in prison? Recall, if you please, the judicial processes undergone by the septuagenarian Chief Adekunle Ajasin. He was arraigned and tried before Buhari's punitive tribunal but acquitted. Dissatisfied, Buhari ordered his re-trial. Again, the Tribunal could not find this man guilty of a single crime, so once again he was returned for trial, only to be acquitted of all charges of corruption or abuse of office. Was Chief Ajasin thereby released? No! He was ordered detained indefinitely, simply for the crime of winning an election and refusing to knuckle under Shagari's reign of terror. The conduct of the Buhari regime after his coup was not merely one of double, triple, multiple standards but a cynical travesty of justice. Audu Ogbeh, currently chairman of the Action Congress was one of the few figures of rectitude within the NPN. Just as he has done in recent times with the PDP, he played the role of an internal critic and reformer, warning, dissenting, and setting an example of probity within his ministry. For that crime he spent months in unjust incarceration.Guilty by association? Well, if that was the motivating yardstick of the administration of the Buhari justice, then it was most selectively applied. The utmost severity of the Buhari-Idiagbon justice was especially reserved either for the opposition in general, or for those within the ruling party who had showed the sheerest sense of responsibility and patriotism.Shall I remind this nation of Buhari's deliberate humiliating treatment of the Emir of Kano and the Oni of Ife over their visit to the state of Israel? I hold no brief for traditional rulers and their relationship with governments, but insist on regarding them as entitled to all the rights, privileges and responsibilities of any Nigerian citizen. This royal duo went to Israel on their private steam and private business.Simply because the Buhari regime was pursuing some antagonistic foreign policy towards Israel, a policy of which these traditional rulers were not a part, they were subjected on their return to a treatment that could only be described as a head masterly chastisement of errant pupils. Since when, may one ask, did a free citizen of the Nigerian nation require the permission of a head of state to visit a foreign nation that was willing to offer that tourist a visa.?One is only too aware that some Nigerians love to point to Buhari's agenda of discipline as the shining jewel in his scrap-iron crown. To inculcate discipline however, one must lead by example, obeying laws set down as guides to public probity.Example speaks louder than declarations, and rulers cannot exempt themselves from the disciplinary structures imposed on the overall polity, especially on any issue that seeks to establish a policy for public well-being. The story of the thirty something suitcases it would appear that they were even closer to fifty - found unavoidable mention in my recent memoirs, YOU MUST SET FORTH AT DOWN, written long before Buhari became spoken of as a credible candidate. For the exercise of a changeover of the national currency, the Nigerian borders air, sea and land had been shut tight.Nothing was supposed to move in or out, not even cattle egrets.Yet a prominent camel was allowed through that needles eye. Not only did Buhari dispatch his aide-de-camp, Jokolo later to become an emir- to facilitate the entry of those cases, he ordered the redeployment as I later discovered - of the Customs Officer who stood firmly against the entry of the contravening baggage. That officer, the incumbent Vice-president is now a rival candidate to Buhari, but has somehow, in the meantime, earned a reputation that totally contradicts his conduct at the time. Wherever the truth lies, it does not redound to the credibility of the dictator of that time, General Buhari whose word was law, but whose allegiances were clearly negotiable. On the theme of double, triple, multiple standards in the enforcement of the law, and indeed of the decrees passed by the Buhari regime at the time, let us recall the notorious case of Triple Alhaji Alhaji Alhaji, then Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. Who was caught, literally, with his pants down in distant Austria. That was not the crime however, and private conduct should always remain restricted to the domain of private censure. There was no decree against civil servants proving just as hormone driven as anyone else, especially outside the nation's borders. However, there was a clear decree against the keeping of foreign accounts, and this was what emerged from the Austrian escapade. Alhaji Alhaji kept, not one, but several undeclared foreign accounts, and he had no business being in possession of the large amount of foreign currency of which he was robbed by his overnight companion. The media screamed for an even application of the law, but Buhari had turned suddenly deaf.By contrast, Fela Anikulapo languished in goal for years, sentenced under that very draconian decree. His crime was being in possession of foreign exchange that he had legitimately received for the immediate upkeep of his band as they set off for an international engagement. A vicious sentence was slapped down on Fela by a judge who later became so remorse stricken at least after Buhari's overthrow that he went to the King of Afro-beat and apologized.Lesser known was the traumatic experience of the director of an international communication agency, an affiliate of UNESCO. Akin Fatoyinbo arrived at the airport in complete ignorance of the new currency decree. He was thrown in gaol in especially brutal condition, an experience from which he never fully recovered. It took several months of high-level intervention before that innocent man was eventually freed. These were not exceptional but mere sample cases from among hundreds of others, victims of a decree that was selectively applied, a decree that routinely penalized innocents and ruined the careers and businesses of many. What else? What does one choose to include or leave out? What precisely was Ebenezer Babatope's crime that he should have spent the entire tenure of General Buhari in detention?Nothing beyond the fact that he once warned in the media that Buhari was an ambitious soldier who would bear watching through the lenses of a coup-detat. Babatope's father died while he was in Buhari's custody, the dictator remained deaf to every plea that he be at least released to attend his father's funeral, even under guard. I wrote an article at the time, denouncing this pointless insensitivity. So little to demand by a man who was never accused of, nor tried for any crime, much less found guilty. Such a load of vindictiveness that smothered all traces of basic human compassion deserves no further comment in a nation that values its traditions. But then, speaking the truth was not what Buhari, as a self-imposed leader, was especially enamoured of enquire of Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor both of whom, faithful to their journalistic calling, published nothing but the truth, yet ended up sentenced under Buhari's decree. Mind you, no one can say that Buhari was not true to his word. Shall tamper with the freedom of the press swore the dictator immediately on grabbing office, and this was exactly what he did. And so on, and on, and on

Thanks for the pics op.

I am looking forward to the completion of the port harcourt maiduguri line. It will really open up the east.
On top of that the east west road which connects all niger delta states is also due for commissioning before the end of the year.
The economic benefits of these 2 projects to the north east, eastern and south south regions will be immense.

Only eternal fools will accept such. Even during abacha period, there was high level of infrastructural construction that came in ptf projects.
We are talking of corrupt thieves here.
Infact, jonaadaft corruption is remarkable considering the fact that he started it from his bayelsa days when the fool did nothing throughout as governor. The drunkard shared money throughout. Anyone justifying jonaadaft corruption because of previous leaders acts deserves death.

What high level construction went on during abachas time? What did the abacha petroleum fund do for nigeria?

Again you have failed. There is a difference between 'your' and 'you are'.

When basic and simple English writing is beyond your intellectual acumen and grasp, why should I bother engaging you in a discourse? I lose the appetite in any argument, if the dude on the other side of the discourse cannot write in simple clear English. It smacks of a person who is intellectually challenged.

Cheap cop out by a wannabe intellectual.

Thinks critiquing grammatical errors on the internet makes your baseless points valid...

Internet grammar nazis...

Let me tell u ignoramus how he made it worse: please tell me one corrupt individual or organisation that has been prosecuted, he said and promised that if we let him remove subsidy nigeria will change like new refineries, hospitals, schools, roads etc. Under him two major criminals were pardoned none was ever arrested. And u are there asking how he made it worse. Please dont be stupid ur an adult and u are clearly nit gaining anything from him. Help ur children's future and vote right.

you do know new refinery's are being built by private companies like dangote and aiteo right? plus SURE-P funds have also been used to construct roads like the east west road and the eastern rail line that runs from portharcourt to maiduguri. Also money has been sent out to our tertiary institutions earlier this year to upgrade their facilities.
Plus Jonathan has no power to nullify the decision of the judiciary in Nigeria. That is against our constitution and it is undemocratic. The judges who presided over those 2 cases are the people that should be scrutinized by the nigerian media. The only thing Jonathan could have done in that situation is make a statement. WELCOME TO DEMOCRACY.

Again how did he make Nigeria worse than it always has been?
Corruption has always plagued Nigeria... The only reason you guys are even talking about corruption now is because of the freedom of information bill Jonathan signed into law in 2010. The same bill that obasanjor repeatedly rejected and the same bill that no single state government including Fashola have signed for their states.
Again the only reason there is great focus on corruption today is due to that bill jonathan signed.

I wonder how much went missing during Obasanjor's regime? I am also wondering how much has been stolen by the state governments presently? Ofcourse if we had a freedom of information bill to preside over these administrations we would have a better idea on how much goes missing.

The fact that Jonathan signed the bill proves the man does care about curtailing corruption in the country and makes him different from other leaders who just play lip service.
