Politics / Re: A Nurse As Minister Of Health: Nma's Petition Disregarded. by Davo09: 1:08pm On Apr 07, 2010
What does a Minister of health do? He doesn't attend to patients, He needs not attend to patients like medical Doctors or babysit any patient like the nurses.
His work is pure management; any experienced Staff with little Hospital experience can perform if He is naturally endow with enough wisdom to put in place all necessary programs to move the health sectors forward. We do not need any Big headed medical doctor who has cram all the anatomy for this position, and i think this doctor should stop displaying their cheap ego in public; who told them they are better than other health practitioners? is time all this arcane thinking and outdated professionals stop displaying their inferiority.

Stop doomsday prediction
Nairaland / General / Re: 7 Reasons The World Would End In 2012 by Davo09: 1:41pm On Mar 24, 2010
Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could a phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

"There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there, "
- Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientist Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.

Earth, as seen in the Blue Marble: Next Generation collection of images, showing the color of the planet's surface in high resolution. This image shows South America from September 2004. Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?
A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

Becomrich/:

I am an electrical engineer. Who worked in Nigeria. It is only a mad man that would want a Nuclear Power in Nigeria.  Can everybody write down todays date. You would be back to say Adesegun warn you. I have lived in Canada for a very long time. I know the different between Nigeria and canada. And I believe I know what is best and in my judgement. I see God asking me, what did I do. History would have it on record. When it happened.

We dont need pessimist at this moment; those that have gone round the world thinking we here in nigeria can't do all what they see, we have the right brains, the resources, we only need commitment from our Government. With nuclear the problem of power failure will be over.
Health / Re: Acid Rain Forecast In Parts Of Nigeria by Davo09: 5:22pm On Mar 23, 2010
Acid Rain
Acids form when certain atmospheric gases (primarily carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides) come in contact with water in the atmosphere or on the ground and are chemically converted to acidic substances. Oxidants play a major role in several of these acid-forming processes. Carbon dioxide dissolved in rain is converted to a weak acid (carbonic acid). Other gases, primarily oxides of sulfur and nitrogen, are converted to strong acids (sulfuric and nitric acids). Although rain is naturally slightly acidic because of carbon dioxide, natural emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides, and certain organic acids, human activities can make it much more acidic. Occasional pH readings of well below 2.4 (the acidity of inegar) have been reported in industrialized areas. The principal natural phenomena that contribute acid-producing gases to the atmosphere are emissions from volcanoes and from biological processes that occur on the land, in wetlands, and in the oceans. The effects of acidic deposits have been detected in glacial ice thousands of years old in remote parts of the lobe. Principal human sources are industrial and power-generating plants and transportation vehicles. The gases may be carried hundreds of miles in the atmosphere before they are converted to acids and deposited. Since the industrial revolution, emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides to the atmosphere have increased. Industrial and energy-generating facilities hat burn fossil fuels, primarily coal, are the principal sources of increased sulfur oxides. These sources, plus the transportation sector, are the major originators of increased nitrogen oxides.

So do not fear anything,
Health / Re: Hazy Air In Your Area? Dust Storm? by Davo09: 10:21am On Mar 23, 2010
The fog/smog we are experiencing in Nigeria presently is as a result of adversion, as seun has said, the upper air is hotter than the lower air, this is preventing the dust suspended in the air from moving up. The immediate effect of this is on people with respiratory problems, i advice they stay indoor, also if the condition persist in your area, this can lead to episode, a situation which prevent the movement of polluted air prom a particular area, it has kill many in UK before, i think our Government should learn from this. Just dont allow ur kids outside for long if is not compulsory.

Politics / Nigeria 10,000 March Against Epileptic Power Supply by Davo09: 1:43pm On Oct 20, 2009
Frustrated by deepening power crisis, about 10,000 people yesterday stormed the streets of Lagos, calling on the Government of the Federation to put an end to the crisis of epileptic power supply in the country.
Senior Pastor, Daystar Christian Centre (DCC), Reverend Sam Adeyemi, led the peaceful protest to the office of Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) in Ikeja, where a protest letter was submitted to President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua through the governor.
Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Ajayi accepted the letter on behalf of Fashola who was at the state council meeting and promised to deliver the letter to the governor.
Speaking at the State Secretariat yesterday, the senior pastor asked the federal government to break the monopoly of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria and allow private investors and state governments to generate and distribute electricity.
He also sought an end to all forms of deal-cutting in the award and execution of contracts, which he described as the bane of socio-economic and political development in the country after 49 years of her political independence.
Adeyemi condemned the vandalisation and theft of power cable and transformers, dishonesty and the greedy acquisition of money taking place in government ministries, departments and agencies in all states of the federation.
He said such practice might attract curses on individuals and the nation, adding that “to prosper as a nation, corruption cannot be an option for us. Let us seize this opportunity to develop alternative sources of energy, tapping into our God-given resources like coal, wind and solar energy among others.
“We call on the Federal Government to break the monopoly of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and allow private investors and state governments to generate and distribute electricity. The strategy that worked for telecommunications should be made to work for power supply,” he said.
Harping on the impact of epileptic power supply on individual lives and corporate organisations, Adeyemi explained that the crisis of irregular power supply “is impoverishing us as individual, as organisations and as a nation. “Precious lives have been lost to explosion caused by kerosene and petrol. Whole families have died in their sleep because of fumes from power generating sets.
Small and large businesses have folded up because of their inability to sustain the high cost of production. The list of woes goes on and on,” he added.
He, therefore, asked the federal government to deregulate the power sector to allow private power-generating companies, adding that it had proved effective in the telecommunications sector.
According to him, “if there is no limit on the number of phone lines a telecommunications company should generate, there should be no limit on the volume of power a company should generate and distribute around the country. “States in the Niger Delta region who have gas flared in their backyards should generate, distribute and sell electricity locally and nationally. This will result in job creation in almost all facets of life in our nation,” the pastor explained.
Speaking on behalf of Fashola after receiving the protest letter from the senior pastor, Ajayi, agreed that regular electric supply was crucial to the survival of individual lives, corporate organisations and government ministries, departments and agencies in different levels.
According to her, if we have light, there will be development in the country. We are in support of regular power supply because it will catalyse economic growth and development. I will deliver the protest letter to the governor who will relay the objective of the 10,000-man protest to President Yar’Adua.
