Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has recommended former CBN Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and ex-Vice-President of World Bank (Africa Region), Dr. Oby Ezekwesili as possible replacements for embattled CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, The Guardian is reporting. Investigations into how $2.1 billion meant for the procurement of arms was squandered, the report says, may lead to the premature exit of Emefiele. According to media reports, the circumstances that surrounded the appointment of Emefiele, including recent revelations about movement of the funds, and his involvement in the unexplained presence of two former heads of commercial banks, when President Buhari hosted members of the international business community in London, are being counted against the governor. “Already,” the source said, “a small team of legal and financial experts has been directed to weigh the various implications the removal of the CBN chief could trigger, especially to prevent a similar backlash, as when the past government engineered the untimely retirement of former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi”, a source told Nigeria’s Guardian newspaper. The source explained that the team was set up to examine all sides to the issue, adding that the presidency is worried that such enormous amounts of money were carted away from CBN as if “it was in Idi Amin’s era.” “One thing you should known about Buhari is that before he takes a crucial decision that involves prominent appointees, he sets up a small committee to investigate the issues and report back to him” The source said the embarrassing presence of the two top bankers at the London meeting infuriated the President to the extent he approached the duo, asking how they were invited, and informing them that he personally handled the selection of who attended. “Checks revealed the possibility that since the well known bankers added their voices in recommending Emefiele for the CBN job, he (Emefiele) might have hinted the two, convinced their clout would open doors for them. “There is also information that the current CBN governor is remotely related to the immediate past Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy (CME) in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.” Another source disclosed that should the plan to have the CBN governor resign sail through, a replacement might be sought from the South East or South South geopolitical zones to avoid outrage and cries of marginalisation by the present administration. “We cannot speculate on the possible candidates but former President Olusegun Obasanjo is believed to have dropped some hints to President Buhari about the right calibre of persons, including Professor Chukwuma Soludo and Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili.” Former Director of Finance in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Shuaibu Salisu, recently made shocking revelations about how $47m was removed from the CBN in 11 suitcases, adding that though he signed for the withdrawal, he was, as a civil servant, only obeying the directives of former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki. Salisu also told investigators at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) how another sum of N10bn was taken from the CBN to support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections. He said payment of the N10bn was authorised by the former finance minister, pointing out that he did not get any share but instead forwarded the money to Dasuki in the suitcases. The sources said it was the belief in presidency circles that since the former CME may be invited to shed light on whether the manner of releasing the huge sums followed due process, the need to re-examine the continued stay of Emefiele at the apex bank is also being weighed. Meanwhile, former Internal Affairs and Education Minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, has said he does not deal in arms procurement and could not have collected monies from the federal government to buy military weapons and equipment. Ayu is alleged to have collected the sum of N345m from the office of Dasuki. Reacting to the report, in a statement he personally signed, yesterday, in Abuja, he explained that any funds from the office of the NSA, remitted to Starbriid Limited, a company he confirmed he has interest in, were solely for the provision of consultancy services on security and electoral matters. Charges against Dasuki by the EFCC included approval of the transfer of “an aggregate sum of N345m, being part of the funds in the account of the ONSA with the CBN, to the account of Starbriid Limited.” Ayu, a Senate President in the short-lived Third Republic, noted that neither Starbriid nor himself deal in satellites and security equipment as alleged by the report, which quoted the EFCC. He said, “To the best of my knowledge, neither the company or I deal in satellites and security equipment.” “However, when I served on the National Security Council as Minister of Internal Affairs, I got educated that various aspects of security work could be pushed under different classifications. Any funds remitted to the company were for consultancies on security related and electoral matters,” Ayu added. The former President of the Senate further explained that he was approached at some point by the former NSA to provide requisite advice and consultancy on difficult issues, adding, “When Colonel Sambo Dasuki assumed duty in June 2012, he approached me for assistance, based on my background as a social scientist, and my previous involvement in government. “Understandably, I provided the requisite advice whenever consulted on difficult issues. It is also public knowledge that I have considerable knowledge of Nigerian politics and skills about competitive political organisation.” Ayu continued, “This is why in 1999, General Olusegun Obasanjo appointed me as Director-General of his campaign. Similarly, in 2007, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar turned to me to assist him in the same capacity. “Not surprisingly, I was approached in 2014 if I could coordinate former President Jonathan’s 2015 campaign. I politely declined by offering advisory services.” Ayu said he is proud of his unblemished service to Nigeria in the various capacities he served, noting, “If I didn’t deem it necessary to abuse such public trust, there is no justification for jettisoning my fundamental beliefs after 10 years in private life.” http://www.signalng.com/obasanjo-recommends-ezekwesili-soludo-to-replace-emefiele-as-cbn-governor/ |

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, which comprises members of the Shi’ite ideology, has given insight into how a suicide bomber disguised as one of its members and blew himself up during a procession in Kano, killing 20 people. Members of the group were on their annual Arba’een symbolic trek from Kano to Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah ground in Zaria, Kaduna State, when the bomber struck. The media team leader of the 2015 Arba’een symbolic trek, Ibrahim Usman, in a statement, said the incident occurred at Dakasoye village area of Garun Mallam local goverment Kano state on Friday, at around 2:30pm. Mr. Usman said 20 people died from the blast, while several others were injured. In a separate statement posted on the website of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Mr. Usman said there were two bombers in the midst of the trekkers, but one was apprehended before he could detonate his explosive vest. “Sign of the incident was first reported when a suspected bomber was arrested with a round of bomb belt tied to his waist in Kura town,” the statement said. He said upon interrogation, the arrested bomber confessed that two of them were sent from Mubi in Adamawa State to Sambisa and finally Gwammaja Quarters in Kano on a suicide mission to kill Shi’ites during the Arba’een trek. “While manhunt for the second bomber on the loose was going on, the bomber detonated the bomb among the trekkers. “Scores of Brothers and Sister, including children were killed. Among the dead was the bomber whose only remain was his chest and head,” the statement said. The statement added that two leaders of the movement Muhammad Turi and Sayyed Mustapha who arrived the scene, ordered evacuation of the dead and injured to ease traffic congestion. The statement added that the symbolic trek had since continued as normal. Witnesses had earlier told our reporter that 10 persons died and 27 others were injured. Giving further insight on why members of the Shiite group undertook the symbolic trek, Mr. Usman said the procession is carried out annually to commemorate the 40th day of Ashura, as a mark of mourning the killing of Imam Husain, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, by the army of Yazid, son of Mu’awiyyah in 61 AH. He said the trekkers would finally converge at Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah in Zaria on December 3 for the grand Arba’een lecture by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky. Meanwhile, the Kano State leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Muhammad Turi, has ordered the continuation of the procession, saying that no amount of threat would deter them. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/194021-how-suicide-bomber-disguised-as-shiite-muslim-before-killing-20-in-kano.html |

Another Boko Haram attack ![]() |
Anonymous group has declared cyberwar against the so-called Islamic State in retaliation for the Paris terrorist attacks, the question becomes: What can the hacker group actually do? Taking over and shutting down Twitter accounts is a logical first step. But the real prize, experts say, is in fundamentally disrupting the militant group's recruiting mechanism. ISIS pitches its radical Islamist message through e-mail, Web chat, Skype calls and YouTube videos, and more recently it promoted a mobile messaging app called Telegram. An Anonymous spokesman in a trademark Guy Fawkes mask said in a still unverified YouTube clip that the group "will launch the biggest ever operation" against ISIS, according to transcripts of the French video. Anonymous, a 12-year-old virtual community that's been linked to hacks on everything from the government of Zimbabwe and Bay Area Rapid Transit to Visa, MasterCard and the Federal Reserve, has proven plenty capable of following through with its threats. After Anonymous, UK threatens ISIS with cyberattack One approach Anonymous could take is to shut down online accounts and thus undermine ISIS' recruiting tools. Another is to embarrass ISIS by publishing evidence of the hypocrisy among its leaders, said Jonathan Sander, vice president of product strategy at cybersecurity company Lieberman Software. "When they go recruit, they're hugely dependent on their online presence," Sander said of ISIS. "If Anonymous takes all that out, it's like capping the revenue of a company. They trade in the lives of poor misguided people." The U.K.'s Independent reported that Anonymous has already started leaking information about ISIS members, and the publication said it's seen one post that includes the address of a recruiter in Europe. Using the Twitter handle @opparisofficial, Anonymous said on Tuesday that more than 5,500 Twitter accounts for ISIS are down. ISIS claimed responsibility for Friday's attacks across Paris, which killed 129 people and injured hundreds of others. It's the second time this year the French capital has suffered a deadly terrorist attack. Anonymous vowed to strike online accounts of Islamist extremists immediately after the January attacks on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket, and subsequently claimed to have brought down a jihadist website. Assuming its latest communication is credible, Anonymous has grander plans this time, and said on Twitter that "#Anonymous is at war with #Daesh." (Daesh is another name for ISIS.) Anonymous appears to already be hacking ISIS-related websites, documenting the process on Twitter with the hashtags #TangoDown, #OpParis and #OpISIS, though none of the Twitter accounts involved is verified. Beyond going after its recruiting tools, Anonymous can look to expose the terrorist group's finances, communications and logistics as well as intelligence information gathered by various government organizations, said Paula Long, CEO of DataGravity, a developer of secured storage technology. Governments that have had sites hacked by Anonymous in recent years include Canada, Australia, Tunisia and Turkey. "ISIS should have high respect for their abilities," said Long. "Anything with a digital fingerprint these guys can find." http://www.cnbc.com/2015/11/18/what-can-anonymous-really-do-to-isis.html

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Chief Olajide Awe, has said the role of the Army during the June 22 governorship election in Ekiti State was “better imagined than experienced”. He and 14 others yesterday testified before the Army panel of inquiry investigating the involvement of its officers and soldiers in the 2014/2015 governorship and presidential elections in Ekiti, Osun, Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states. It was gathered that Army officers and personnel, including the famous Capt. Sagir Koli, who released the voice clip which alleged that former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musliu Obanikoro, rigged the election in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had last week appeared before the panel. The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Mechanised Division, Kaduna, who is also the President of the panel, Maj-Gen. Adeninyi Oyebade, had on November 9, inaugurated the panel on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai. Gen Oyebade said the Army was deeply concerned about the alleged misconduct of its officers and men before, during and after the elections. Testifying yesterday, Awe told the panel that the role of soldiers in the June 2014 governorship election in Ekiti was better imagined because according to him, it was more of a battle field between the soldiers and voters. He alleged that before the election, party bigwigs, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, were prevented from entering the state for the party’s rally. Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole was grounded in Benin on the orders of the power-that-be. The APC chairman said over N30 million meant for party agents and election works were confiscated by some soldiers, whose identity, particularly their name tags, were concealed with black bands. Awe said 36,000 security personnel, including soldiers, invaded the state on the eve of the election, harassed and arrested party leaders, members and supporters. He added that he received phone calls from party loyalists on election day, alleging the maltreatment soldiers were meting out to them. The APC chairman said the whereabouts of the Director-General of the Fayemi Campaign Organisation, Bimbo Daramola, who escaped arrest in Ire, was still unknown even after the election. Awe told the panel that there was no election in the state, noting that former Governor Kayode Fayemi accepted the outcome of that election for peace to reign in the state. He said while he objected, Fayemi replied that “look if we say we cannot accept the election result, we will put the lives of our people in danger”. The APC leader added that “Fayemi accepted the result in the name of peace. Some of this did not go down well with our people. We took the decision to accept the result for the sake of peace in the state.” Asked by Gen. Oyebade if there was a report of killing during the election, Awe said there was none. He, however, said that in his village, several houses were razed, 15 vehicles destroyed and several people kidnapped. “Some of these kidnapped victims were later found at Sagamu, Ogun State, with bruises on their bodies. “Sir, there was no reports of anybody killed, but of robbery, harassment and intimidation,” Awe added. The APC chieftain also fingered operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police in the party’s misfortunes, saying that the “DSS did a lot havoc because its officials were close to the people”. He explained that while the DSS officials wore hoods, the soldiers covered their name tags. His words: “Prior to the June 22, 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State, we were excited when told that the Army will be involved in maintaining peace. A week or so after the soldiers arrived, our expectation was short-lived. “On Wednesday, we started seeing that things were not as we thought. Thursday, we had a rally where most of our guests, especially party bigwigs were prevented from coming into the state. “Nearly all major roads in Ekiti were blocked by the military. The stop and search was beyond what it should be. Money meant for the party agents and other logistics were taken by the soldiers.” He urged the panel to allow him file photo evidence of his claim. Gen Oyebade granted Awe’s prayer and asked him to submit the evidence within 48 hours. When it was the turn of the Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, to testify, he pleaded to be heard behind camera. The panel members obliged him for security reasons. http://abusidiqu.com/ekiti-polls-capt-koli-13-others-testify-before-panel-reveals-how-military-dss-caged-apc/?UA-34095171-2= |
