The Nigerian Army on Monday said it has uncovered a factory in Bama, Borno state, where the extremist Boko Haram sect manufactures rockets and Improvised Explosives Devices. The spokesperson for the Army, Sani Usman, who make the disclosure in a statement, also said “troops of the Seventh Division Garrison of the Nigerian Army engaged in Operation Lafiya Dole on Sunday made remarkable progress by arresting a Boko Haram terrorist kingpin, John Trankil, at Kasuwar Shanu in Maiduguri metropolis”. Mr. Usman, a colonel, also said by arresting Mr. Trankil, the troops averted what would have been multiple bombings in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. The statement said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect said that nine of them were sneaked into the Maiduguri armed with AK 47 assault rifle each and a Hilux vehicle laden with 20 Improvised Explosive Devices meant to be detonated at some selected targets in the city. “The Theatre Commander operation LAFIYA DOLE, Major General Yusha’u Mahmood Abubakar, commended the efforts of the troops and renewed calls for troops and the public to be more vigilant and security conscious particularly at all check points, markets, worship centres, motor parks and schools. “In a related development, troops of 21 Brigade Nigerian Army, while on offensive operations on Boko Haram terrorists location, with the support from the Nigerian Airforce discovered and destroyed the terrorists’ Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and Rocket making factory along Bama-Gonin Kurmi within the outskirts of Bama town, Borno State. “The items recovered includes gas cylinders, welding machine, pipes and poles. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has identified the use of text message symbols as part of the “general weaknesses of candidates in the various subjects” of the Council’s examinations. This was contained in a communiqué issued at the weekend by the Public Affairs Officer of the Council, Mr Demianus Ojijeogu, after the 60th Meeting of the Nigeria Examinations Committee, the Council’s highest decision-making organ in Nigeria. It said: “General weaknesses of candidates in the various subjects as outlined in the Reports include poor command of language, indiscriminate lifting of portions of set passages as answers and use of text message abbreviation “u” for “you” in English Language.” According to the statement, “appropriate sanctions” were also recommended for candidates, schools and supervisors who were indicted in the various reports submitted to the Committee for consideration, in a bid to reduce the rate of examination malpractice: “The Committee endorsed appropriate sanctions in all established cases of malpractice as prescribed by the Rules and Regulations governing the conduct of the Council’s examinations after diligent deliberations. It approved that the entire results of candidates involved in proven cases, which attract cancellation of entire results (CER) be cancelled, while subject results of those involved in cases which attract cancellation of subject results (CSR) be similarly cancelled.” Subjects in which the performance of candidates was said to be good included: Shorthand, Financial Accounting, Commerce, Typewriting, Storekeeping, Bookkeeping, Office Practice, Store Management and Physics 2. The Committee’s 60th Meeting considered reports emanating from the conduct of November/December 2014 and May/June 2015 examinations. http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/candidates-now-write-“you”-as-“u”-in-exams-–-waec |

Students of Kogi State University, Anyigba took-over the Ankpa-Anyigba road to protest the alleged murder of a final year student of the university (names withheld) by a Federal Road Safety Officer along Ankpa road. Eyewitness account had it that the student was allegedly beaten to death for his failure to bribe the officer. According to the eyewitness, trouble started when the officer stopped the student and after interrogation, demanded for a bribe of 100 naira. The late student was said to have refused to part with the sum, leading to a heated argument between the duo. The Road Safety Corp was said to have thereafter descended on the student, leading to the latter’s death. When the news filtered into the campus, thousands of students besieged the Streets and later stormed the Road Safety Office in the town. Vanguard was reliably informed that the officer was whisked away to safety by his colleagues. When Vanguard visited the University community, bonfires were seen on the road. The police were seen battling to restore order to the town. Some of the students who spoke to our reporters expressed grief at the death of the final year student, threatening to fight on until justice is done. When the Sector Commander of the Corps was contacted, he refused to pick his calls nor reply the various messages sent to his mobile lines. However, a Senior Officer in the sector who crave anonymity confirmed the incident. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/frsc-officer-allegedly-killed-final-year-student-over-n100-bribe/ |

The National Orientation Agency, NOA, on Thursday warned of planned terror attacks in the South-West region by Boko Haram. Consequently, NOA, has advised schools, churches and mosques, among other usually crowded places, on the need to put measures in place to arrest any possible attack. A statement released in Ado-Ekiti by the state Director of NOA, Mr. Dayo Famosaya, said the alarm had become necessary because of the need to be security conscious and watch out for strangers in their neighbourhood. Famosaya, in the statement entitled Public information on security consciousness and awareness, said Boko Haram fighters may have infiltrated the South-western part of the country, going by the content of security agents reports. He said: “They have threatened to deploy cluster bombs in the zone. These cluster bombs are usually housed in discarded metallic materials such as cans of beverages and soft drinks. “The bombs may be concealed in bags and for it to have more grievous effect, they have planned to deploy these bombs in crowded places such as schools, markets, stadia, churches and mosques.” It warned the public to watch out for people wearing flowing apparel, as it was the type of cloth they wear to hide their weapons. http://dailypost.ng/2015/11/13/boko-haram-planning-to-bomb-south-west-noa-raises-alarm/ |
