CrimePoliceman Arrested For Heading A Robbery Gang by dayo23(op): 7:48pm On Jul 13, 2015
A policeman, Sergeant Joseph Okweke, has been arrested for heading a robbery gang. Okweke, who is from Obuluku in Delta state, used to go for robbery operations with his police uniform, Eagle online reports.
Attached to the Area ‘A’ Police Command, Lion Building, Campbell, Lagos Island, Lagos, Okweke revealed that wearing his uniform, makes it easier for him and his gang during their operations as people will naturally think that he is a law abiding officer.
Okweke led a five-man gang of robbers, which specialised in attacking warehouses after overpowering the security guards. They were nabbed after they went for an operation at Ogudu area of Lagos state.

While two members of the gang escaped, Okweke and two others were arrested.

Two members of the gang were arrested alongside the police sergeant. They have been simply identified as Gbenga and Orobo, while the remaining two escaped.

Orobo also revealed that he is dismissed army officer but refused to say why or when he was dismissed from the force.
A police source said: “The gang specialised in robbing ware houses. The sergeant used to operate in his police uniform. Once he and his gang stormed a warehouse, Okweke would use his pump action gun to threaten the guards. They would tie the guards. His men would start loading their vehicles with the goods from the warehouse.

“A few hours after leaving the scene of the robbery, the sergeant would take the goods to Onitsha in Anambra State to sell to a buyer called Benjamin Osuozu. He used to escort the goods wearing his uniform. This will make policemen on the road not to flag him down to ask questions about the goods. We discovered that the gang also used to snatch cars, which they sell at Onitsha.”

Just three days back, police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ogun state Command, Deputy Suprintendent of Police, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, while delivering lecture to about 953 trainees on Corporal to Sergeant promotion course advised the new intakes to respect people’s fundamental human rights, ensure professionalism and have respect for the general public.

PoliticsBuhari Approves N160 To $1 For Christian Pilgrims by dayo23(op): 7:29pm On Jul 13, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a special exchange rate for this year’s Christian pilgrimage to Israel.

The Executive Secretary, the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, Mr. John Kennedy-Opara, disclosed this to State House correspondents shortly after briefing the President of the commission’s activities inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Kennedy-Opara said Buhari has approved the rate of N160 to $1 for those who will take part in the exercise.

He said, “The President has approved $1 to N160 for the conventional exchange rate for this pilgrimage operation and he also agreed that he will continue to encourage us particularly as we drive to ensure self-sustenance, to make sure that the pilgrims are able to pay for the pilgrimages after removing government sponsorship.

“This is a journey and we are sure that we are going to succeed. So the President was very happy with the entire process.

“We are praying that God will help us to be a source of strength to Mr. President, so that the Federal government and states will spend the necessary resources on other things while the pilgrimage is self-funding as time goes on.”

Kennedy-Opara said the President was happy with commission after his presentation.

He said the commission was already running four different kinds of pilgrimages in one year.

He listed them to include Easter pilgrimage; the youth pilgrimage tagged “Operation catch them young”; the family pilgrimage and the main pilgrimage.

He said those going to Israel for the 11 days trip will pay N379,840, while the youth pilgrimage will cost N357,000.

“The beauty of what we are doing is that we have added skill acquisition. In other words, people who go on pilgrimage can undergo the skill acquisition programme organised by the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission and Ministry of Agriculture, Israel to train our people in the area of agriculture.

“We are also introducing the pilgrimage pilot lottery scheme that will enable people who are lucky to be able to go on this trip without much dependence on the state and the Federal Government,” he added.

PoliticsICPC To Arraign Aminu, Leader Of Goodluck Support Group For Extortion, Blackmail by dayo23(op): 3:14pm On Jul 13, 2015
Justice Ishaq Bello of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted leave to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to arraign for trial Aminu Abubakar, Chairman of the Goodluck Support Group and Okechukwu Geoffrey for extortion and blackmail. The accused persons were earlier granted bail in the sum of N15million and two sureties in like sum. The duo were alleged to have been in possession of some documents relating to some officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, with the intent to implicate them by publishing and threatening them, if they do not part with the sum of N50million. At the last adjourned hearing on an application filed by the counsel to the accused persons, contesting the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the suit, the trial judge in his ruling averred that through out the submission of the defense counsel, there was no basis for the charges to be quashed as the prosecution diligently linked them to the offenses committed. ICPC prosecuting counsel George Lawal in his submission argued that, for the application seeking to quash charges to be considered, the suspects must have been linked with the alleged offences. “The charge clearly shows where the first accussed had a meeting with the officials of the petroleum ministry, where he demanded for the sum of N50million and even went ahead with threats, and even went into a meeting where he collected the sum of N5million, even writing an undertaking therefore, the issue of quashing the charge was not acceptable,” he argued. Having listened to the various submissions, Justice Bello adjourned the matter to October 21, 2015 for trial. The accused persons will appear before the court on a 3 count charge under the penal code, for extortion and conspiracy to extort on October 21.

PoliticsBomb  explosion Hits Military Checkpoint In Maiduguri - PremiumTimes by dayo23(op): 2:29pm On Jul 13, 2015
Some members of the Civilian-JTF escaped death narrowly on Monday when an explosive device believed to have been hidden very close to a checkpoint exploded injuring a number of them.

A witness said the blast occurred at Njimtilo, a village few kilometres to the gate of Maiduguri, where soldiers, customs and immigration officers, police and members of the Civilian-JTF mount one of  the biggest checkpoints in the city.

“The blast occurred at 12:30pm at the Njimtilo checkpoint; no one was reported dead but some Civilian-JTF members were injured,” said a plain clothes police officer, whose name cannot be mentioned as he was not officially cleared to speak. “It was not a suicide bomb from what I observed. I guess the bomb was either buried or dropped near the place.”

As at the time of filing this report, emergency aide workers, including NEMA had arrived the spot to evacuate the injured to the hospital.
