Boko Haram will free more than 200 young women and girls kidnapped from a boarding school in the town of Chibok last April in exchange for the release of militant leaders held by the government, The Associated Press has reported. The agency said the claim was made by Fred Eno, an apolitical Nigerian who has been negotiating with Boko Haram for more than a year. “The new initiative reopens an offer made last year to the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan to release the 219 students in exchange for 16 Boko Haram detainees,” the activist said. Fred Eno (possibly a pseudonym) who was involved in negotiations with Boko Haram last year and is close to current negotiators, told the AP that “another window of opportunity opened” in the last few days, though he could not discuss details. He said the recent bombings that have killed over 350 people killed in the past nine days was meant to force government to hold negotiations. Eno said the 5-week-old administration of President Muhammadu Buhari offers “a clean slate” to bring the militants back to negotiations that had become poisoned by the different security agencies and their advice to Jonathan. Two months of talks last year led government representatives and Eno to travel in September to a northeastern town where the prisoner exchange was to take place, only to be stymied by the Department for State Service, DSS, the activist said. At the last minute, the agency said it was holding only four of the militants sought by Boko Haram, the activist said. The activist said the DSS continues to hold suspects illegally because it does not have enough evidence for a conviction, and any court would free them. Nigerian law requires charges be brought after 48 hours. Amnesty International alleges that 8,000 detainees have died in military custody. Boko Haram has not shown them since a May 2014 video in which its leader, Abubakar Shekau warned: “You won’t see the girls again unless you release our brothers you have captured.” In the video, nearly 100 of the girls, who have been identified by their parents, were shown wearing Islamic hijab and reciting the Quran. One of them said they had converted to Islam. The presidency through Mr. Femi Adesina had said on Saturday that government was ready to hold talks with Boko Haram to stop the incessant killings. http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/09/boko-haram-wants-16-detained-leaders-in-exchange-for-chibok-girls-negotiator/?wt=3

ABUJA — Sources close to the leadership of the Boko Haram insurgents have told Vanguard that the group might have agreed to hold talks with the new leadership in Nigeria with the aim of ending the six-year-old insurgency in the country. One of the sources which had been involved in previous attempts to broker peace between the Federal Government and the terrorists group confirmed to Vanguard last night that there were some level of discussions between the group and the government but that the “government does not want to be seen to be negotiating with the terrorists.” The source, who works with an international agency with some presence in Nigeria, said: “I can tell you that there is some behind-the-scene informal discussion with certain segments of the Buhari administration, going on in Nigeria. “But the truth is that the government does not want to be seen to be talking with the group apparently because of the failure of all previous efforts to dialogue with the Boko Haram men in and outside Nigeria under the previous administration. “The aim of the renewed effort is to resuscitate the discussions from where we ended abruptly under the Jonathan administration and take it forward from there since there is a new government in place in Nigeria. “The true position is that some of those with contacts with the leadership of the Boko Haram have gone back to assure them that there is a new government in place and that things can be done differently from what it was in the past when they were dribbled over and over again by top government officials who wanted to make quick gains under the guise of negotiating with the militants.” The source said the militant leaders had been assured that the Buhari government was more open and ready to negotiate with them. “Indeed, we have begun the peace process from the Boko Haram side and that may signal a new hope for the release of the missing Chibok girls,” the source said. It will be recalled that the Presidency had hinted last week that it might negotiate with the dreaded Boko Haram leadership in order to end the cycle of violence that has wreaked havoc in Nigeria in the last six years. Presidential spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, who gave the hint, did not, however, give a timeline when the negotiation would start and who the government intended to deal with in carrying out the assignment. Boko Haram is said to be offering to free more than 200 young women and girls kidnapped from a boarding school in the town of Chibok in exchange for the release of militant leaders held by the government. An Associated Press quoted an unnamed activist as saying that Boko Haram’s current offer is limited to the Chibok girls who were taken in April 2014. “The new initiative reopens an offer made last year to the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan to release the 219 students in exchange for 16 Boko Haram detainees,” the activist said. He said the five-week-old administration of President Muhammadu Buhari offers “a clean slate” to bring the militants back to negotiations that had become poisoned by the different security agencies and their advice to Jonathan. The President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Dr. Felix Omobude, says over 850 churches have been destroyed, with many people killed and injured through the activities terror sect Boko Haram in the northern part of the country. Omobude stated this on Tuesday during a visit to the Oyo State chapter of the association, at the Rehoboth Cathedral, Oluyole Estate, Ibadan. He was assisted during the visit by the founder of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Bishop Wale Oke; Oyo State chairman of PFN, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun (of Victory International Church) and other clergies. Condemning the renewed suicide bombings and other attacks by the sect, coupled with the heavy casualties being recorded, Omobude urged the Federal Government to rise up to the task of defending the citizens from the Islamic fundamentalists. He explained that peace would reign in the country when people live together without the fear of being attacked by a set of individuals. He however aligned with the approach of the Federal Government to the dialogue with the sect, if they were ready to embrace peace. He said, “By my understanding of the government’s position, it is not that the government is going to beg the insurgents. The war against them will continue. If they say they want to talk, no government will turn deaf ears to them. “We are appealing to our people as well as our leaders to come together and treat the insurgents as criminals, which they are truly because nobody can justify the dastardly act of bombing places of worship. “The PFN condemns the atrocities of the Islamic sect in all ramifications. We acknowledge the efforts of the security agencies, especially since the inauguration of the new government and we appeal to the government to make the security agents comfortable so as to be able to concentrate on the task at hand.” Omobude also appealed to Nigerians to accept displaced victims of the sect or those who were rescued by security forces back into the society. He added that the fellowship, in its effort to assist the victims of Boko Haram across all religious divides, set up an appeal fund. He said so far, over N40m have been spent on the rehabilitation of the people. “I urge everybody around the victims to be their brothers’ keepers, by giving them any assistance necessary,” he said. He also appealed to Nigerians to be patient with the new government and pray for its success. The Nigerian military has explained how the suspected mastermind of the Jos and Zaria bombings was arrested. The defence headquarters had earlier tweeted that the unnamed suspect was taken into custody in Gombe after organising the two attacks that killed 70 people between Sunday and Tuesday. The spokesperson for the Army, Sani Usman, has given further details on the arrest: “Please recall that on Sunday 5th July 2015, suspected Boko Haram terrorists carried out coordinated bomb and gun attacks on worshippers at Ýan Taya mosque, Dillimi Street, off Bauchi Road, Jos where the holy month of Ramadan tafsir was holding, and Shagalinku Restaurant, along Bauchi Road, Jos, Plateau State which led to death of over 48 persons, injuring several other persons and destruction of property. “Similarly, the terrorists carried out another bomb attack on hapless workers undergoing verification exercise at Sabon Gari Local Government Secretariat, Zaria Kaduna State which resulted in the death of over 25 people including a two-year-old child and destruction of property. “Consequently, security cordon was established in the general areas especially along Bauchi, Gombe and the North Eastern part of the country by troops of 3 Division and Special Task Force, as well as the Department of State Services. This culminated in the successful arrest of the mastermind of the heinous terrorist acts and two of his accomplices at a checkpoint in Dadin Kowa, Gombe State. The terrorist kingpin and his colleagues who disguised in a trailer while trying to evade checks were fished out by troops of Nigerian Army. “The arrested terrorists are currently being processed for further action and would soon face the full wrath of the law. “The general public are hereby please requested to be more vigilant, security conscious and report any suspicious persons, movements, and facilities to the security agencies.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/186325-how-mastermind-of-jos-zaria-bombings-was-arrested-military.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter
