Vickybee: That's the fact. One of my classmate in secondary speaks plain English and can switch to English/British accent perfectly.
When he tried mimicking Igbo, yoruba and Hausa accent, he failed woefully except trying a bit in Hausa.
P.S - He's Delta Igbo and currently studying in Caleb University Lagos. Thank you.. I am glad you got the message |

Darkrebel666: ~ There's nothing like plain accent. You have to belong to a tribe or region and speak like where you come from. No matter what you do in trying to get rid of it, there would still be a trace of it staining your voice box.. The best you can do is Float. Floating is when you switch from American accent to British to Nigerian when talking.
~Yorubas are known for their H-factor and Ibos for their L and R pronunciation problem like you said, but even Yorubas and Ibos that don't have this problem don't speak plainly like you termed it .There's still a trace of their Native accent in their speech.
~Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor are perfect examples. Nope.. You are wrong at bolded.. I have seen cases where i had my guess games gone wrong and i just had to ask the person where he or she is from.. Can you go and see that half of a yellow sun¿ the behind the scenes? Chiwetel said it wasnt quite difficult not to make use of his brits accent but it was quite stressful switching to his Igbo accent.. I dunno about Lupita |

Darkrebel666: • I still don't understand what you mean by Plain accent babe..
~ Wole Soyinka speaks in a British accent mixed with a little bit of Nigerian accent (Yoruba ) same with omotola... you can't completely eradicate your native accent.. maybe you should tell me what Plain accent is? Plain accent is making the right pronounciations.. Devoid of dialetical intonations .. You cant tell me that a yoruba man saying eat as heat is right?? Or an Igbo man saying please as prease is right?? |

Darkrebel666: •No they don't ... Even in England there are different accents. A Londoner has a different accent from a Man or woman from Southampton or Manchester. Slight differences. In America too... A New Yorker speaks differently from a man from Texas I am talking about the plain english here.. Right pronounciations.. He was trying to say that Nigerian's speak with their dialectical intonation.. And that is so not true in some cases! |

Darkrebel666: • Omotola Jolade • Ibrahim Babangida • Wole Soyinka • Norbert Young • Joke Silva • King Sunny Ade
The way these people speak is the way all Nigerians should at least. Correct Pronunciation of words, right intonation mixed with native Nigerian ad libs. the plain Nigerian accent is not good enough. These peeeps you just mentioned talk with the plain accent, no mixup with their dialects whatsoever. That is the message i was tryna pass across.. |

ronald4lif: Well there's an exaggeration there but I can tell atleast (or about) 6 in 10 Nigerian tribe from their accent, particularly Igbos and Yoruba. I do that all the time in my mind like when I'm in a bus or train and they speak english, then coincidentally when they take a call they speak in their dialect and it clicks with my suspicions. I have gotten it wrong few times too.
I learnt Igbo during my four years stay in the east, Enugu.
You sef how you take learn igbo Lol You are right tho. i do that guess work too and it rhymes sometimes But you just cant get it right with this new generation .. Me?? i be Igbo girl na. how i no go learn |

ronald4lif: Your dad case is very rare then, coz I can easily tell what tribe a nigerian hails from by how they speak, their accent, especially the over 50year olds. Not the ones who are less than 40. If e like make e be say the person don live abroad for 30years their accent no dey hide.
I don't have one, I have never lived in Nigeria for more than six years so I couldn't have developed one. But I love it and wouldn't mind having one as well. Lol @ bolded.. i just want to take that as an exagerration So howcome you speak Igbo so well?? |
Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 11:17pm On Mar 18, 2015 |
ronald4lif: That's true though. But a lot of them fall into the category of who the OP is talking about.
When you listen to Nkem Owoh speak, there's this Igbotic accent that goes with it. When you also listen to actors like Jide Kisoko, you notice this Yoruba accent when he pronounced words. These are the people who are true to their natural accent, it's hereditary. But a lot of the young actors are speaking with a total different tone which was unheard of about say 30-50 years ago. That is also not the case with Genevieve and Rita back then too.. They acted and are still acting with plain English. All i am saying is that the Nigerian accent has evolved.. Hereditary?? my dad speaks plain English and he was brought up by his father, who ofcourse can be categorized into the old generation, how he managed to curb out the igbotic accent whatever i cant tell. Do you have an igbotic accent?? |
Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 10:43pm On Mar 18, 2015 |
ronald4lif: Hmmm, I am not sure if Nigeria has a common accent though. Thought each ethnic nationality have theirs, unique to them. They do.. You cant tell me that our Nollywood actors use their different ethnic accent when acting out a script?? |
