ronald4lif: I am not talking about Scottish accent sis, I don't even understand most of their pronounciation. Never been to Scotland either.
Were there a means to enable a voice group conversation this argument would have been more comprehending. So far with my direction of argument and that of others, without any strong practical evidence to back it up apart from mainly anecdotal evidences, I will draw a line at this point. I only brought up the Scottish accent cause you laid much emphasis on the brit English accent being so much of a nutcracker If you then think the English accent is that much of a big deal to deal with, what would you say about the scotts, mind you, this is a rhetorical question!! Anecdotal evidences can also be considered as some generalized claims, which most times can be hasty |
Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 11:28pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif: I didn't say one must only be born in the UK to have the Brit accent, I said it's either they are born in the UK, or moved to the UK at a very young, prolly teen years or early adult (youthful years) before they can fully adopt the Brit accent. Most of the people who can pronounce or make a statement or short speech with a Brit accent will fail woefully if given an essay to read it out in Brit accent. They will end up mixing different accent together. Stop contradicting yourself..Unless you are talking about the Scottish accent and the rest .. And here a british thinks the English accent can be gotten with perfection under a year If you started words with their English accent, why cant you finish it up without mixing it up?? damn!! |

AirborneLacer: This is only a cheap generalization.
Firstly, Not every one that speaks with a foreign accent is 'forming' as you asserted.
I for one, don't feel too comfortable speaking with the Nigerian accent - this doesn't make me less of a patriot.
I tend to express myself more when I switch to my prefered British accent.
You don't have to blame me for this really. As a lad, I attended a seminary school that had English folks as teachers.
At a very tender age, I was encouraged to speak the British way by the school. It was hardly boring and I so much loved the experience.
Secondly, one doesn't necessarily have to travel out of the country to acquire a foreign accent.
If this is some kind of notion, then it has to be dismissed.
You can learn a foreign accent by mere watching foreign movies, attending a Nigerian school that recognises a foreign curriculum, engaging in conversations with foreigners etc.
It's that simple. God bless you plenty!!! |

ronald4lif: Sorry, I may have missed your point there. I thought you were trying to say that for the fact that Chiwetel lived in the East and his parents thought them their language while growing up, he should have equally adopted the Igbo accent just like he did adopt that of Britain. Or you may want to rephrase your question again, sorry. You know its actually funny how the brits think their English accent is quite easy to pick up with. And somewhere in the world, someone else thinks one need to be born in the uk for him/her to get the english accent |
Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 11:10pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
Brandnew2: Nobody says Wole Soyinka speaks exactly like the British. What I believe Dechandel is trying to say is that he's got a fusion of british in the way he speaks and she's right. That's why they call it Queens English. They thought us and we blended it with out own natural tongue to produce that unique type of English. You know i had to check references to back up my point and this accent wahala isn't even british. what the normal Londoner speak is pure english this is what i just saw on an "English website" They claim the main brits accent is welsh, Scottish and the rest of them.. And they said the most simple accent to adopt is the English accent of which many peeps concurred to this!! Do you get my point?? |
Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 11:02pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif: Lol! At the age of 9 and 13 one is still a teen, and that was still what I said at the onset, that unless you were born or spent your teen or youthful years in the UK, you can hardly adopt the Brit accent. Only 2 in 10 does so successfully in their early adult years like I also pointed out in my earlier comment.
There are many Nigerian born kids, especially Yorubas, whose parents sent them to Nigeria to live for some years before they come back to Britain. They learnt Yoruba and Nigerian pidgin during their stay in Nigeria. But they never lost touch of their Brit accent, because they were born in the UK and that was the ever first language they adopted in life. I hope this answer the question. I don't agree with your last statement and i am saying so out of experience.. You don't get my point as much as i don't get yours You are just misquoting my comment(s) |
Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 10:38pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif: Your examples of Chuka Umanna and Chiwetel falls in line with my argument. They were born and/or grew up in the UK. I would never cite such examples as a reference to this debate.
Learning a language is different from having an accent. I said I lived in the East and learnt Igbo, and I also said I don't have the igbotic accent. There's a difference between learning a language and adopting an accent. Or you could correct me if I am wrong. Chiwetel Ejiofor came down to Nigeria at the age of 9 and left again at the age of 13, he was in Enugu at that time.. And also during one of his interviews, he said his parents made sure he was being brought up with his language, this was in answer to how he could speak Igbo that much.. Now you stay with some certain peeps with different language and certain differences, biko will there be a change or not?? this is not adopting accents or whatever, but its the natural law and answer my question o |

Romance › Re: Naija Guyz And Foreign Accent What For? by dechandel(f): 10:23pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
ronald4lif: When it comes to differentiating vowels sound in writing that's not my thing but I am reasonably good at knowing the difference of consonants.
There are many videos on YouTube of Brits whose accent one can never match as same with Soyinka's. Please for starters, take some time out again and listen to Soyinka's videos again on the net and compare with that of Tinie Tempah, Cameron, Boris Johnson etc and see if you can boldly say Soyinka's got Brit's accent. I know you here Brits talk everyday as well in person or you may even have the Brits accent yourself, you really think Soyinka's accent is same with what you here on the streets daily?
Based on the argument on immigrants who migrated to Britain at an adult age with pure British accent that's one fact I won't also want to be engage on. Mixing up words like Jim Iyke did in the past in movies is not American accent but many people thought it was then and still is now. I have had this same argument many times with guys who almost 95% of people in Naija thinks their accent is Brits but admits theirs and the Brits born is largely different.
When you attend an office where a registration is made, and passports or biometric checks is required to run some checks. No matter how British is your accent if you weren't born or spend teenage and relative young years in the UK, the question of where are you originally from will always pops up, if you like have a red passport. But when they here proper Brit accent, such a question hardly surfaces. And it has nothing to do with skin colour, same treatment goes to white (EU citizens) and blacks (African kids but or who spent their youthful age here). Such question comes up because the Brits knows and can differentiate their accent from that of copy-cats. Pardon any typo, busy with other stuffs while typing. I don't understand this post at all you will soon come and say that Chuka Umunna's accent isn't british or that Chiwetel Ejiofor fakes his accent I have seen videos of Wole Soyinka a couple of times and yes his words have connections to the british accent.. Copy cats?? I wouldn't say that cause there is no way you would spend much years with people and wouldn't get a hint or rather learn their language, this doesn't apply to the british accent alone.. You were in the east for four years and learnt how to speak their Igbo, so how is this different for someone who has been in the united kingdom for four years and wouldn't grab the accent |

ronald4lif: Who do I even quote and leave the other. A lot of mix up here.
I have watched Soyinka speak severally and I couldn't find any trace of British accent from the way he speak. Na wa ohh.
Fact is, if you weren't born in Britain or spent your childhood years there your British accent is likely a fake. A lot of people just rap words thinking that's how Brits speak. I laugh. Only about 2 in 10 of those who have migrated and living permanently for years in the UK has the British accent, though not even perfect. Needless to say tourists who just visit on holidays or rap words thinking they have British accent.
If them no born you for UK, or you spent your childhood and teenage years in Britain your British accent is most likely fake.
Quote me with Nigerians who weren't born or grew up here with British accent let's compare their accent to Brits, with available videos on YouTube. Haa.. I don't agree with this your post o.. nah.. you got it wrong this time!! One; I have seen Soyinka talk before and yes he has the brits accent.. Two; I have seen peeps who migrated here in their early 20's and the rest, been here for a very long time. and when they talk you'd think they were born here. do you know background influences a lot?? And please how do you spot a fake brit accent?? teach me, since you know a lot about the fake accent |

D1ck: Dechandel.... Oyinbo pepper; darkrebel666, can you actually believe that some peeps are envious of this princess.... You are completely personified... Whenever I stare at your pix, you make my whole body frail and the energy is gonna garner to a certain place. Fine girl no pimples, you've got no dimple yet you're still beautimple. Everything about you reeks of embellishment in my own cognition. I want to turn to your bra so that I can hold those b00bs all day... I wish to become that chair you're sitting on.. You are a woman of virtue and high prestige. The mere sight of you can make Jesus drink himself to stupor. I'll gladly succumb to your love if you offer it. With you I feel my rapture, and I'll chatter for months and even years if that's gonna secure a place for me in your heart. I promise to handle your love painstakingly.
