20 Newborns Feared Dead, As Striking JOHESU Members Attack FMC Owerri

OWERRI – Fresh tension erupted in the Federal Medical Centre Owerri as the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) members Thursday attacked the health facility, allegedly leading to the death of over 20 newborn babies.
It was also gathered that the FMC Public Relations Officer, Secretary to the Medical Director, the police officer posted to the hospital and other medical personnel were terribly battered by the angry staff.
Investigation by the DAILY INDEPENDENT revealed that trouble started when the JOHESU group in a bid to prevent the health workers from performing their usual official duties as result of their ongoing strike angrily moved to the Special Intensive Care Unit (SICU) where they suspected that some medical doctors were attending to newborn babies.
They angry medical personnel were said to have quickly dismantled all the electrical appliances and destroyed all the sockets in which the oxygen cables and incubators were fixed, an action that reportedly led to the death of some newborn babies (premature) said to have cardiac or respiratory problems in the early hours of the day.
Our correspondent also gathered that Mrs. Jacinta Achonu, the FMC Public Relation Officer, as well as Mrs. Christiana Emeto, Secretary to the Medical Director of FMC, were battered seriously both of who are now receiving treatment in one of the hospitals in Imo State.
Besides, Mr. Omini Ebiri, an inspector of police, was reportedly heavily assaulted, punched down with his gun and mercilessly beaten.
It was learnt that when he got up he used his radio message to alert police who rushed to rescue him.
The embattled police officer who was posted to the FMC before 2015 did not retaliate or make any comment, it was also gathered.
An eyewitness who pleaded not to be mentioned told our correspondent that the striking JOHESU members who were over 50 in number went to Ward 7, abused and beat up one of the renowned medical practitioners, Dr. Egeukwu Chimaraoke, who was attending to patients in critical conditions in the hospital.
When journalists disguised themselves and enquired from them why they unleashed mayhem to staff of the health institution, they stated that they were acting on instruction from the National Chairman of JOHESU nationwide.
In the same vein, Mike Okonkwo who was sighted in the FMC and who was very angry about the devastating situation in the FMC, alleged that the JOHESU members in Imo State took it so personal because of the hatred, strong animosity and acrimony they have against the people of the state.
He said that JOHESU had demonstrated tribal sentiment, marginalisation, parochial and misconception towards Igbo man.
“This is highly political but they used strike as a camouflage.”

“I am going to appeal against this wanton destruction of lives and property to Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) and Okoro-Nkwonta Christopher and Christiana Adimora must be arrested and tried for murdering over 20 newly born babies in FMC. The attack was unprovoked, unnecessary and regarded as direct assault to the people of Imo State,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) Andrew Enwerem (DSP) said that police were aware of the situation in FMC and beating and wounding of the police officer posted in the health institution.

He further stated that some of the JOHESU members had been arrested and had made useful statements. He said, “Nigeria Law stated that any citizen has the right to protest or stay at home but would not use it to infringe on the right of others.”

PERHAPS, due to his strong opposition to President Buhari administration, some members of his constituency under the aegis of Coalition of Abia South Senatorial Movement, CASSM, have vowed to recall their Senator, Chief Enyinnaya Abaribe, saying he has woefully failed them. To show their seriousness, the group  on Tuesday, in Aba, commenced the distribution of recall forms to the six council areas that make up the zone for collection of signatures. Addressing journalists at the venue where recall forms were distributed, the leader of the group, Prince Paul Ikonne said that Senator Abaribe has “woefully failed us”. One of the Speakers, Mr. Daniel Nwaeze, a lawyer, specifically accused Abaribe of “unleashing many attacks” on President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari “We have gone far in his recall process. He is not performing. What he is doing at the National Assembly is not what we sent him to do. We never sent him there to go and insult the President even when he has not attracted any dividend of democracy to the constituency,” Nwaeze said. According to Ikonne, “we are here to commence the recall of  Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe because he has failed woefully, enough is enough. “We sent him to National Assembly to get projects and make good laws but the reverse is the case. He has failed woefully. Let him come home. We have our PVCs and with our PVCs we are going to recall him. The process starts now. “It is not a political party affair. I am of APC. We have APGA, APDA, PDP and other parties. It is about Abia South Senatorial zone. We are distributing recall forms to the six Local Government Areas that make up the district. “The six council areas are fully represented. We will gather again in the next 14 days to compile the result and take the forms to INEC,” Ikonne said.

The Nigeria police has made a breakthrough in the fight against herdsmen - Men of the Ebonyi state police command intercepted a Toyota Hummer bus along the Abakaliki-Ogoja federal highway - Firearms and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the bus .
Men of the Ebonyi state police command today, Saturday, April 21 seized firearms and several rounds of ammunition when they intercepted a Toyota Hummer bus along the Abakaliki-Ogoja federal highway. According to Daily Trust, the incident happened which before Onu-Ebonyi bridge Nwaezeyi, in Izzi local government of Ebonyi state, came after one month a herder attacked and killed three persons in Onunwakpu community close to the scene of the arrest. Nigeria police officers continue to distinguish themselves in the face of limited resources and bad working conditions. The bus was bearing the inscription Taraba Express and was intercepted by policemen on stop and search duty before the bridge along that axis of the federal highway. During the arrest, 7 Fulani people were said to have been in bus which had Lagos state registration plate number. “It was the policemen on Safer Highway Operations that stopped the bus and as normal with their usual stop and search operation they found firearms and army uniforms stocked in three big sacks. “Also found were uncountable ammunition, rifles which is above 16 in number including explosives, local charm,” an unnamed source quoted in the report said. The source added that weapons such as rifles were hidden in big sack bags while the others were in cartons. The Ebonyi state police command are yet to disclose where the bus took off from and its destination. The bus is presently in the custody of the state police command headquarters, Abakaliki.

Lassa fever: Ebonyi doctors blame death of colleagues on non functionality of virology centre

Doctors in Ebonyi State on Tuesday protested along the major street of Abakaliki over the non functionality of the virology centre in the state.

Recall that the virology centre was built and equipped by the state government with over N350million and handed over to the federal government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.

However, the doctors who are majorly the staff of federal teaching hospital Abakaliki, blamed President Buhari for allowing the centre to be lying waste.

Breifing Journalists at the front of government house Abakaliki, the leader of the protesters, Dr Onwe Oliva Mbam lamented that it was as a result of the non functionality of the centre that caused the death of their 2 colleagues.

He noted that the 3 lassa fever victims were first admitted for 4 days at the FATHA virology centre before they were taken to Irua specialist centre in Edo state.

“As we pray for our lost colleagues, we believe we attract the sympathy of the public and the federal government and anybody that can help us, to put pressure on the President to fulfill the promise he made to the governor of Ebonyi state and to Ebonyians that he will make the virology centre to be functional instead of paying him (Umahi) back the money he used to build the centre. That’s why we are here”, he stated.

In a swift reaction, the governor of Ebonyi state Chief David Umahi also regretted that the virology centre has not been operational since the state handed over the centre to the federal government.

He said: “I was told that the lassa fever emanated from trying to save the life of somebody who sojourned from outside the state to Hausa quarters in Ebonyi state and that’s how the incident started.

“But the annoying thing is that since we handed over the lassa fever centre to the federal government, they have not fully taken it over.

“It is not fully functional. It is very annoying that the committee we set up to build the place and equip it did not tell us that the supplier of the equipment has not fully installed it. Nobody told us and that is very very sad. We had several meetings since yesterday and today. We have agreed to release 5 million for them to source for expert from Lagos.

“I have also called the minister of health and he has also sent expert here. N5 million is to activate the place fully and get expert to start training. We are committed to spending more funds as needs arises.

“In our meeting with NMA and CMD this morning also, we agreed to release the sum of 2 million.

“What we have agreed is to get 3 names from NMA to be members of the lassa fever committee and get a sub committee out of that, so that they will be a kind of monitoring, they will be in 3 groups, one will be at the land of Hausa, Mata hospital and FATHA 1 & 2.

“All the relatives of the victims must be put on close monitoring, temperature taken at morning and evening for 21 days. We will also assist the NMA to bury the dead by giving them small cash to assist the family of the deceased.

“I ask you to tell your family members and the public to minimize the shaking of hands and anybody that has higher fever that lasts for 2 days should report. We will increase an awareness campaign for people to stop eating of rats, bush meat and wash hands properly. One of us, My SA on special duties lost one of her sisters”, he stressed.

This is barely 48 hours since the ugly incidence of the death of two doctors Dr.Ali Felix and Dr.Abel Sunday from LASSA fever in Federal Teaching Hospital,Abakaliki (FETHA),Ebonyi State Yesterday another health worker, nurse Iwe Innocent died from the same disease.A house officer is also battling to survive from the same viral disease . All these are avoidable death .
How long will this continue?Doctors and other health workers are dying from this avoidable malady.Due to government nonchalant and lackadaisical approach to plight of doctors. An edifice called Virology Centre built by the state governor has not been put to use due to politics.
Today,Nigeria Medical Association(NMA) Ebonyi state chapter took to street protesting, asking government to come to their aid and stop the spread of this disease.Hence put the Virology centre to work.
Doctors took oath to save life and not to die why saving life.
