No less than 31 lawyers have expressed their interest in defending a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, suspended in connection with a $1.1m scam involving a self-confessed fraudster, Ramon Abbas a.k.a Hushpuppi.


Barrister Bappah Salisu, who spoke for the group of lawyers drawn from the 19 Northern states in the country, disclosed this on Wednesday in a statement issued in Abuja.

The legal practitioners said their decision to offer free legal services to Kyari was in response to the recent call by the Coalition of Northern Groups for the preservation of his fundamental rights following an indictment by a court in the United States of America.

According to him, there were several procedural lapses bordering on breaches of international protocol in the FBI attempt to have Kyari, a former Commander of the Police Intelligence Response Team, extradited to the U.S. to face criminal charges.

Kathy Hochul: Who is New York's first female governor?

Kathy Hochul is to become the first female governor of New York, after Andrew Cuomo resigned over sexual harassment allegations - which he denies.
Ms Hochul will take over as the top politician in the fourth most populous US state in just two weeks' time.

But who is she?

Described by her predecessor as "smart and competent", the 62-year-old is a centrist Democrat from the Buffalo area of New York state.
She joined the governor's team in 2014, and has held the largely ceremonial role of lieutenant governor.
Ms Hochul is from a family of steelworkers, and her grandparents fled poverty in Ireland before making New York their home.
One of six children, she gained an undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, and a law degree from Catholic University of America. From there, she started off working as an aide on Capitol Hill and worked in local positions before being elected to Congress.
Ms Hochul has been an advocate for women facing domestic and sexual violence throughout her career. She led Mr Cuomo's "Enough is Enough" campaign to fight sexual assault on college campuses.
In 2006 she also established the Kathleen Mary House, a transitional home for victims of domestic violence, with her mother and aunt.
In 2008, the governor-to-be caused controversy when serving as the Eerie county clerk, after she opposed then-governor Eliot Spitzer's plan to give drivers' licences to undocumented immigrants. She walked back on the comments 10 years later, stating, "it is a whole different era out there".
Ms Hochul had joined the chorus of politicians denouncing Andrew Cuomo last week, and said his resignation on Tuesday was the "right thing to do".
The investigation into Mr Cuomo "documented repulsive & unlawful behaviour by the Governor towards multiple women", she tweeted.

An independent investigation by the New York Attorney General's office found that Mr Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women, including state employees.
Women alleged that he made sexual comments, inappropriately touched or groped them, and kissed them without consent.

It's unclear whether Ms Hochul will seek a full term in the 2022 election.

The cleric, as gathered, dropped the name of Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to win the confidence of the hoteliers.

Apastor, Eli Dilli has allegedly absconded with N518,000 hotel bill in Yola, Adamawa state.
Dilli, who is the district pastor of Lutheran Church of Christ (LCCN), Jalingo, Taraba state was said to have lodged at Tufini Hotel, Yola, Adamawa state, but allegedly absconded without settling bills to the tune N518,000.
The cleric, as gathered, dropped the name of Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to win the confidence of the hotelier.
He was said to have lodged in the hotel between November 2018 and April 2019, spanning a period of six months.
During the period, the clergyman incurred a bill of N518,000, covering accommodation and feeding.
The pastor, however, fled without settling his bills, according to the manager of hotel, James Joshua.
He was arrested on March 8, 2021 and charged to Upper Area Court I on Tuesday, August 10, 2021.
At the hearing, the First Information Report (FIR) containing the charge bordering on cheating as filed by the prosecutor, Sergeant Sawe Nicholas, was read to the defendant and he pleaded "not guilty".
In his ruling, the judge, Aliyu Bawuro, ordered that the cleric be remanded in prison custody until April 16, 2021 when the prosecution team will present their witnesses.
