There was strong evidence that physical activity protects against colon cancer. “Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers, yet this report demonstrates there is a lot people can do to dramatically lower their risk,” said Edward L. Giovannucci, MD, ScD, lead author of the report and professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. “The findings from this comprehensive report are robust and clear: Diet and lifestyle have a major role in colorectal cancer.” The new report evaluated the scientific research worldwide on how diet, weight and physical activity affect colorectal cancer risk. The report analyzed 99 studies, including data on 29 million people, of whom over a quarter of a million were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Other factors found to increase colorectal cancer include: Eating high amounts of red meat (above 500 grams cooked weight a week), such as beef or porkBeing overweight or obeseConsuming two or more daily alcoholic drinks (30 grams of alcohol), such as wine or beer Read more http://candourgist.com/2017/10/05/processed-meats-increase-colorectal-cancer-risk-whole-grains-decrease-risk/ |

More than 40,000 women will be killed by breast cancer this year in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Women face a one-in-37 chance of dying from the disease, which according to the ACS is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women behind lung cancer. Read on to learn about symptoms of the disease. What are some breast cancer signs to be aware of? Many women are diagnosed during a routine mammogram without exhibiting any symptoms, according to Dr. Laura Spring, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. However, some warning signs include a lump, persistent pain in one area that doesn’t go away, and hardening or thickening around the breast and armpit, Spring explained. “What’s most important is for women to know what’s normal for them and to be aware of changes in the breast,” she said Stanford University Medical Center professor Dr. Douglas Blayney said patients may experience bone pain and have weakened bones and fractures if the cancer has already spread. What else should I know? Read more http://candourgist.com/2017/09/30/symptoms-breast-cancer-look/ |

HEALTH BENEFITS OF GINGER Andy | September 19, 2017 | Health | No Comments Consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions. However, some herbs and spices may offer additional health benefits. One of these is ginger. Scientific analysis shows that ginger contains hundreds of compounds and metabolites, some of which may contribute to health and healing. Of these, the gingerols and shogaols have been most extensively researched. 1. Digestion The phenolic compounds in ginger are known to help relieve gastrointestinal (GI) irritation, stimulate saliva and bile production, and suppress gastric contractions as food and fluids move through the GI tract. At the same time, ginger also appears to have beneficial effects on the enzymes trypsin and pancreatic lipase, and to increase motility through the digestive tract. This suggests ginger could help prevent colon cancer and constipation. Read on http://candourgist.com/2017/09/19/health-benefits-ginger/ |

Lutein and Zeaxanthin Technically two different nutrients, both lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids (plant pigments with strong antioxidant properties) that have been found to support memory, improve processing speed and efficiency and perhaps even impact academic performance – especially when consumed together, Kuchan says. For example, one study from the Center for Nutrition Learning and Memory found that increasing intake of lutein and zeaxanthin significantly improves young adults’ visual processing speeds. The best sources for kids: While dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale are great sources of lutein, they aren’t always the most palatable to children. Try integrating them into fan favorites like baked spaghetti. Fortunately, tomatoes are rich in lutein, too. Meanwhile, eggs, corn, kiwi, grapes, oranges and zucchini pack plenty of both lutein and zeaxanthin. Make produce fun with zucchini noodles called zoodles, frozen grapes and chocolate-covered orange slices. Read on >>>> http://candourgist.com/2017/09/12/5-nutrients-improve-kids-brain-health/ |

Youth empowerment have been given a better definition under the APC government, many of us may not like this government, but I score them high in area of youth development, the Buhari government currently have about 200,000 youths under the npower program while another batch is been prepared. In September the government will employ another 300,000 youths under the technical program. One thing I appreciate this government for is that the process have been stressfree and Nigerian youth have not been rediculed like under the previous govt. I can remember vividly the immigration job scam, the SURE P program how Nigerian youths were dehumanised and many died, Only for some people to cart away billions of naira, I remember seeing youth in the morning doing all sorts of rubish physical exercises with no clear cut program for them under the SERE P program , heard many had to bribe their way in and were not even paid at the end of the day.
