Immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh Thursday confessed that when he assumed office as the CDS, he headed a armed forces that lacked the relevant equipment and motivation to fight an enemy (Boko Haram terrorists) that was invisible and embedded with the local populace. Badeh made the confession just as he pointed out that the decision of certain countries (which he did not name), to deny Nigeria weapons to prosecute the war against Boko Haram, added to the challenges the military faced. Delivering his valedictory speech at his pulling out ceremony in Abuja Thursday, Badeh said, “Notwithstanding the modest successes we recorded in the fight against terror, I must say that the task or coordinating the military and other security agencies in the fight against the insurgents, is perhaps the most complex and challenging assignment I have had in my 38 years in service”. Other challenges he said he faced included “the exploitation of a serious national security issue by a section of the media and the political class to gain political mileage”. “Furthermore, the activities of fifth columnists in the military and other security agencies who leaked operational plans and other sensitive military information to the terrorists, combined to make the fight against the insurgents particularly difficult”. Continuing he said, “The activities of these unpatriotic members of the military not only blunted the effectiveness of the fight, but also led to the needless deaths of numerous officers and men who unwittingly fell into ambushes prepared by terrorists who had advanced warning of the approach of such troops”. “Permit me to also add here, that nation’s militaries are equipped and trained in peace time, for the conflicts they expect to confront in the future. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience as a nation. Over the years, the military was neglected and under-equipped to ensure the survival of certain regimes, while other regimes, based on advice from some foreign nations deliberately reduced the size of the military and underfunded it”. “Unfortunately, our past leaders accepted such recommendations without appreciating our peculiarities as a third world military which does not have the technological advantage that could serve as force multipliers and compensate for reduced strength”. “Accordingly, when faced with the crises in the North East and other parts of the country, the military was overstretched and had to embark on emergency recruitments and trainings, which were not adequate to prepare troops for the kind of situation we found ourselves in”. “It is important therefore for the government to decide on the kind of military force it needs by carrying out a comprehensive review of the nation’s military force structure to determine the size, capability and equipment holding required to effectively defend the nation and provide needed security” Badeh said. “Despite these challenges, I am glad to note that a lot was achieved during our time in the fight against terror. The achievements are largely due to the commitment, patriotism, and fighting spirit of our men and women in uniform who saw the fight against terror as a task that must be accomplished no matter the odds and in spite of the campaign of calumny against the military by a section of the media and their foreign collaborators” he noted. Expressing happiness with “the teeming populace that have continued to stand behind their military”, Badeh said, “Our true friends who stood by us in our time of need and provided us the weapons we are now using to conduct the operations will always have a special place in our hearts. I must also mention the support and cooperation we have continued to enjoy from our neighbouring countries”. On his advice to the nation, the former CDS said, “I want to state emphatically that no nation can achieve its full potentials by totally depending on other nations for its Defence needs. The lessons of the civil war and ongoing war against terror where certain countries frustrated our attempts to procure much needed weapons are very instructive”. “Again, as I always said, when the nation is at war, it is not the military alone that is at war, it is the entire nation. Accordingly, every segment of society must see itself contributing to the overall war effort by presenting a united front against a common enemy”. “Therefore, I appeal to the relevant agencies of government to mobilize the huge human and material resources we have in this country towards the development of vibrant Defence Industrial Complex that would contribute to meeting our critical arms and equipment needs. This is crucial if we must reduce our total dependence on foreign sources of supply for critically needed arms”. President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party to come together to work to build a stronger party that would retain power in subsequent elections. He spoke at the presiddential Villa while receiving the PDP Presidential Campaign Organization’s (PCO) report from its Director General, Ahmadu Ali. While warning members of the party who are defecting to other parties that they would be worse off, president Jonathan noted that despite losing the presidential, the PDP still remains a formidable party. He said though he did not consult anybody before calling General Buhari to concede defeat, the president said he did so on behalf of all members of the party. “I still believe though we have lost presidential elections, some national assembly elections, governorship elections especially in the north, PDP is still the dominant party. Let us not judge PDP by the result of the elections for the presidential elections.” “Our duty is to go back and identify areas of challenges so that the party will come up strong and play the role as a very strong party. PDP is still the most organized party, is still the party that is not owned by anybody, is still the party that whatever you are you can get to any level with your competences and so on.” “So I encourage members of our party to remain loyal to the party, not to be so disillusioned because we lost presidential election and decide to go where they think they will fill their stomachs or something. Is not easy I have been here for five years plus, you hardly satisfy even 15 perent of those who work for you. “Those people running and those already cross-carpeting, they will come back on an empty stomach because they will touch the primary members of their party, before they get to you, they know you are coming because you are hungry, before it will get to you the food will be gone.” While stressing that the PDP remains a formidable party, president Jonathan insinuated that even in those areas thatb “If you look at the result, the difference is just 2.5 million votes and if you look at the areas where it is perceived that PDP scored so low, PDP couldn’t have gotten those kinds of scores but the elections are over, the country first.” “It is not as if Jonathan alone made the sacrifice it’s all of us. I made the pronouncement but some of us are paying the prize. Some people pay more prize than I do, I know how some of you are already being persecuted and the kind of situation facing you. The key thing is that we must continue to unite, as a party we must continue to work hard so that as we go into subsequentelections 2019, 2023 and so on and so forth, PDP will continue to come up strong. Even in the interest of the nation, we need PDP.” He said He urged the members to be committed to the party so that they can jointly face the challenges ahead of the party. Justice Mohammed Idris, in a judgment delivered on Monday, held that such restriction of movement, in the name of sanitation, amounted to a violation of the citizens’ right to personal liberty and freedom of movement protected by sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution. He therefore voided the power of the Lagos State Government and its agent to arrest any citizen found moving between 7am and 10am on the last Saturday of every month when the enviromental sanitation exercise is observed. All of creation goes back to the Creator Who created all things. No one created Him; He created everything other than Himself. This is what makes sense and is logical. This Creator is Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted. With regard to what our religion tells us, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us about this question, where it comes from, and how to respond to it. Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “People will keep on asking questions until someone will say, ‘Allaah created the universe, but who created Allaah?’ Whoever encounters anything like that, let him say, ‘Amantu Billaah (I believe in Allaah).’” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Shaytaan will come to one of you and say, ‘Who created the heaven? Who created the earth?’ He will say, ‘Allaah’” – then he mentioned something similar (to the previous report), and added, “And His Messengers.” [i.e., amantu Billaah wa Rusulihi = I believe in Allaah and His Messengers] The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Shaytaan will come to one of you and say, ‘Who created such and such?’ until he says to him, ‘Who created your Lord?’ When it reaches that stage, let him seek refuge with Allaah [say A’oodhu Billaahi min ash-shaytaan ir-rajeem = I seek refuge with Allaah from the accursed Shaytaan] and stop thinking about it.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The Shaytaan will come to a person and say, ‘Who created such and such…’” and he narrated the whole report. (Imaam Muslim, 134). In these ahaadeeth (Prophetic narrations) we see: Where this question comes from – from the Shaytaan; How to deal with it, which is: to stop pursuing these thoughts and these tricks of the Shaytaan to say, “I believe in Allaah and His Messengers” to seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan. It was also reported that one should spit drily three times to one’s left, and recite Qul Huwa Allaahu ahad. (See "Problems and Solutions" in the Shaykh’s Books section of this website). 3. With regard to the prior existence of Allaah, our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has told us about this, for example: He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O Allaah, You are the First and there is nothing before You; O Allaah, You are the Last and there is nothing after You.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2713) He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah existed when there was nothing apart from Him.” According to another report: “There was nothing before Him.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari; the first report 3020; the second report 6982). This is in addition to what is stated in the aayaat (verses) of the Qur’aan. The believer believes without a doubt, the non Muslim denies and the munaafiq (hypocrite) doubts. We ask Allaah to grant us sincere and certain faith with no doubts. And Allaah is the Source of strength. |
