wytecat: Nice! I was surprised to see any part of ondo on biafra map until yesterday, Now I know. Biafra is still being pushed, no one knows the way it's going but we have seen the maps, and if what I've read here is anything to go by, when nigeria splits ilaje of ondo will be in the republic of niger delta if they don't go with biafra. That's important for we Yoruba to know now because non Yoruba must not be allowed in the new Yoruba country. A united oduduwa republic will consist of all who have ties and history with oduduwa That means the likes of Benin empire of old will be in that map Benin Empire consists of present day South Ogun, Ondo some parts of delta |

oluamid: We all know that the term 'Yoruba' is relatively new and loosely used to describe the peoples who live in south western Nigeria. The real question is: Do the Ilaje trace their history to Ife (the ancestral home of the Yorubas) or not? That, I think, will put paid to the issue once and for all. Yes ilajes traced their history to ife Who created ife? |

wytecat: You must be living in a lala land to not have seen or heard about artifacts of Yoruba culture. The museum of natural history in Atlanta held a Yoruba festival with display of hundreds of artifacts but we are yet to see one held for bini, that's because bini don't have enough to put on display and whatever bini have was not originally theirs, and museum had to go to the source. What do they mean in your language?
iyasere = is a female/mother title 'Iogbosere' this spelling is not clear enough but anything ogboni is Yoruba Olisa = lower king, we still have olisa of ijebu ode.
I'm not saying ilaje are Yoruba, you saw me asked ilaje44, and he couldn't say yes or no, this explains the reason some biafra maps have ondo as part of their territory, and I've just learnt something new. I call people what they want to be called. Yasere - king spokesperson/second in command Logbosere - kingmaker Oliha - chief priest NB: as an ijebu person that you are we have no qualms with you people as we r one One love @ the bolded ilaje was and has never been part of biafra...it's a fictional map...though ilaje was under Benin Kingdom back then. Was there anything like biafra in the 19th century? I doubt |

wytecat: Talking about what you don't know is almost sinful. You just don't know what you just said. There's no difference in the monarchical heritage among Yoruba. Every family in Yorubaland has a tradition of worshipping one of the gods. In my family it's ogun(and I'm sure most of my sisters, brothers and cousins don't know this but, because I was raised by my grandmother and regarded as omo agba I had some information about them)while the next door neighbor was Ayelala. Go to interior part of ogun and see families that worship Olokun, every family has orisa, though many are moving away from them in big cities but many go to the villages to worship them secretly. In small towns you would see imale/oro families, mention the orisa and you will find the worshippers in Yoruba land. Do you know that we even have witches festival? You have to be in the rural areas to see it. All the orisa you worship are from Yoruba.
You want me to google what happened in 14th to 19th century? Sorry google is not credible enough for that, just about anything can be found on google. You can only speak for your tribe and not Yoruba.
There was never an empire close to Oyo in all of the south of Nigeria, and you don't need google to tell you that if you can see clearly. There should be a kind of backup to your claims that there were great empires in yorubaland. Things like historical texts and artifacts Should give proof just like the Great Benin Empire. At least they have backup of their historical claim. The iyoba artifact comes to mind. Also their historical texts can be found in the British museum. Like I said earlier the only close group to ours in SW are the ijebus and our ondo brothers. I will like to know the meaning of the following monarchical title in yoruba: -yasere? -logbosere? -oliha? Please enlighten me to know which dialect in yorubaland bears these titles apart from ilajes |

wytecat: I know it was niger delta lovefest, but the moment Yoruba was mentioned in it, we had to set the record straight.
You still cannot speak for all Yoruba dialect especially when it took others to correct you about ijebu. Ijebu has it, Egba do and I still believe other Yoruba dialects have it but we just have to hear others to know who is right about that.
And where exactly did you say the ijebu dialect falls again?
You should have just said Ilajes are Yoruba or they are NOT instead of the defense route you took. I have my reason for asking and I know what I have believed all along but, wanted to hear from you since we all know how some claim Yoruba when it's convenient and distant themselves when it's not or how some are neither here nor there. The first few posts even suggested Ilaje is different from Yoruba and I didn't see you correct that. In my opinion yoruba is more like a group of people with mutual relationship that have lived together for a long time in peace and harmony. In other words you cannot call yoruba a tribe. This is because most of these clans do not have common cultural and monarchial heritage. I haven't come across anywhere in yorubaland where they celebrate Aiyelala or umale or umalokun festival as it's being celebrated here in ilaje. Same also lies to other dialects such as Owo Ikale and so on. The only thing you can celebrate general is the Ogun festival which is also celebrated in Benin. For the monarchical System, the ilaje System was derived from benin Kingdom. The same applies t ikales. Why didn't we hear of a dominant yoruba Empire in the 14th century up till 19th century? Even the Oyo empire we hear of had its boundaries and territories(google it) it didn't extend to the eastern parts such as ijebus Owos ilajes ikales etc |

Goodboiyy: Was thinking of Some connection b/w Ilaje and Itsekiri this morning , Although I see so many Similarities but I still see some Differences between them.
Itsekiri Itsekiri are people of The Niger Delta , They speak a language very similar to Ilaje and Yoruba , Making them one of the key branch of the Yoruboid language. The Itsekiri presently number just over a million people and live mainly in the Warri South , Warri North and Warri South West local government districts of Delta State on the Atlantic Coast of Nigeria . Significant communities of Itsekiris can be found in parts of Edo and Ondo states.
Ilaje
The Ilajes are a distinguished, distinct linguistic group of Yoruba peoples made up of four geo-political entities namely Ugbo, Mahin, Etikan and Aheri.
below are some Similarities and Differences b/w Ilaje And Itsekiri
Similarities
1. Language : The Ilaje Unlike other Yoruba Ethnic group speak almost the same language with Itsekiri, If an Itsekiri man speaks someone from Ogun or Lagos won't understand but An Ilaje man Will Understand Fully.. Let's take this As an example.. An Itsekiri man will say Omi Iwerre Dede' o why An Ilaje man will Say Oma Ilaje Dede' Lookin at both sentence you can See The Great Similarities b/w them but The Yoruba will say Omo Yoruba Fefe
2 Occupation : The major Occupation of The Ilaje/Itsekiri people re mostly fishing , but due to heavy oil exploitation in there land They no longer Make use of there water Bodies (All Thanks To The Nigeria Government)
3. Wealth : The Ilaje and Itsekiri people are very rich because of the oil being found in There land.. itsekiri account for about 70% of oil Production in Delta State why Ilaje Account for about 96% of Oil production in On do
3. Accommodating : The Ilaje and Itsekiri people are very very accommodating. I remember my mom always telling me How Accommodating they her..
4. Intelligent : Most of the Big names and Professor in Ondo state are mostly From Ilaje Extraction. Similarly the Itsekiri's re well educated and Also Brilliant.
Differences
1. Culture : The Itsekiri culture is totally diff from The Ilaje Ethnic group, Although Some itsekiri communities share alot of Things with them but Majority of Itsekiri's culture are mostly Edo.. Be it Food, marriage, burial e.tc
2. Itsekiri's are more connected to Urhobo, so they act like The Urhobo People
3. The Itsekiri Think Differently from Ilaje ..
written by Ayo Goodboiyy that loyal Urhobo boiyy Nice one @OP f recognising the ilaje nation In terms of relationship ilajes and itsekiris marry themselves a lot. And our offsprings are dope. A notable mention is oritsefemi(itsekiri/ilaje). I even heard that Ayiri's mum is ilaje |

fratermathy: Goodboiyy, I always love your threads because you advocate for unity in spite of the massive tribalism on nairaland. I just hope some bigots won't come and derail this thread. As for Lalasticlala, better do what is needed.
To add to this thread: Differences
Itsekiris have a wider range of words borrowed from alot of languages unlike Ilaje whose words are still mainly Yoruba. Itsekiris practise the Edo system of monarchy but Ilajes follow suit with their Yoruba brothers. Itsekiris have a different cuisine which are more like Urhobo and Ijaw cuisines. Itsekiris eat Starch and Owho soup which is similar to the Urhobos. Ilajes, on the other hand, draw their cuisine from Yoruba with some Ijaw influence in adjoining areas. Itsekiris dress differently from Ilajes. Itsekiri dressing is similar to that of Urhobo people while Ilajes mostly dress as Yorubas do.
******* This comment may be edited to add more facts. I can help you do some additions: Oma ilaje Omuro mo gha rin oh....ilepete re se Ile ba mi Monarchy: ilajes practice the edo(benin) system of monarchy: Olu - the royal throne Oliha/Asogbon - the chief priest Yasere - the king spokesperson...and so on CUISINE: The ilajes stand out from the yorubas in terms of cuisine. Our major food is pupuru(more like fufu but u pound it) with orugbo(black soup). We also have what we call ogolale- a special delicacy made from unripe plantain and yam in the form of porridge. I'll add some other details later #elclasico mode |
