Turkish siblings moving on all fours, baffle scientists Turkish siblings moving on all fours, baffle scientists Walking on all fours might be fun for some, but for the members of one Turkish family, it’s the only way to move around, according to the BBC. Five siblings of the 19-member Ulas family, from Hatay Province, suffer from a rare disability – they lack the balance and stability required to stand up straight, forcing them to move on all four limbs. The family, who were first discovered in 2005, featured in a BBC documentary film the following year. The film revealed that of the five siblings, two sisters and a brother have only walked on all fours since birth. Another brother and sister sometimes manage to walk upright. “It’s amazing as an example of a strange, strange aberration of human development,” said Professor Nicholas Humphrey, who visited the family twice during the documentary. “But their interest is how they can live in the modern world.” As a result of the disorder, the siblings are often ridiculed. However, the family has found a way round their ordeal by letting the sisters remain indoors most of the time, spending their time crocheting. One of the brothers, on the other hand, is more adventurous – he travels to the local village and interacts with other people. According to the film, a popular explanation for their unusual walk – similar to the movement of primates – was ‘reverse evolution’. Many scientists believed that the siblings were living proof that it is possible for humans to devolve. “I do not think they were destined to be quadrupeds by their genes, but their unique genetic make-up allowed them to be.” said Professor Humphrey. “It has produced an extraordinary window on our past. It is physically possible, which no one would have guessed from the modern human skeleton. So scientists now believe that the gait could be a byproduct of a hereditary condition that causes cerebellar hypoplasia, which disturbs their sense of balance. The siblings may have developed quadrupedalism in order to adapt to the rare condition known as Uner Tan syndrome, named after the Turkish evolutionary biologist who first studied them. Well, it seems that while scientists are busy finding theories to explain the rare condition, there is no real cure in sight. The Ulas siblings will probably have to walk this way for the rest of their lives. It has been revealed through a military source that some of the explosives used recently by the Boko Haram female suicide bombers have been traced to a Chinese factory which was seized some weeks ago by the sect, the Nation had reported. Other findings have equally showed that some of the teenage bombers were not told they were on a suicide mission. The military source who spoke on trust revealed that the military and other security agencies have started probing the sudden rise in suicide bombings across major parts of the north by Boko Haram, disclosing that most of the Improvised Explosive Devices were mainly remote controlled. The source claimed that the military in its investigation has traced the explosives to a Chinese plant which was attacked by Boko Haram in May. DailyPost recalls that Boko Haram had launched an attack on a quarry plant of a Chinese road construction firm in Northern Cameroon near Waza town, a few kilometres from the Sambisa Forest. The military source said: “”The military and security agencies have started probing how the insurgents came about the massive IEDs being deployed to attack various institutions and locations. “We have done analysis of some samples of the fragments of the IEDs used to attack some of these places. “The second leg of the ongoing probe borders on the need to find out whether some of the IEDs also came from some of the allies of the sect in other countries like the Taliban, Al-Qaeda in the Maghreb and others. “But certainly investigation is in progress in order to nip the spate of suicide bombings in the bud.” Revealing further, he said: “Findings also confirmed that some of the female suicide bombers were innocently conscripted to run errands they were not aware of. “Once the girls were sent on errands, the sect members used to stay somewhere to use remote control to detonate the IEDs. “This development does not rule out the possibility of the training of some of the female bombers for the missions. “We are studying all bends to the new tricks of bombing before it assumes a large scale dimension. On the December deadline given by the National Council of State to end the insurgency in the North, the source added: “We are working to address the security challenges before the timeline. “The deadline presupposes that we will wage a full- scale battle against the insurgents without minding the collateral damage. “Once the presidency gives the directive, the military will have no option than to launch an outright war against the insurgents in Sambisa Forest or wherever is their base. “I think we have reached a stage to either address the insurgency or allow the situation to degenerate’’ xxxxxxx www.dailypost.ng/2014/08/02/boko-haram-explosives-used-female-suicide-bombers-traced-chinese-factory/

The US House of Representatives is set to pass legislation authorising it to sue President Barack Obama for what Republican leaders describe as his overreach of authority. The resolution is expected to pass the Republican- controlled chamber in a party line vote on Wednesday. Its sponsors say Obama exceeded his powers when he delayed an insurance deadline in his healthcare law. The president’s aides say the prospective suit is a political stunt. Obama’s Democratic allies say it is legally groundless and will cost taxpayers millions of dollars, and has only been devised to rally the Obama-hating Republican base ahead of the November mid-term elections. The White House says the president has acted within his constitutional authority as chief executive of the US government, and Democrats have sought to raise money off the issue by warning that the suit is a prelude to impeachment proceedings. “This lawsuit is frivolous on steroids,” Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings of Florida said on Tuesday at a preliminary committee meeting. “It’s absolutely insane what you all are doing.” Republicans in Congress have complained that Obama has exceeded his constitutional authority on numerous occasions, in order to bypass Congress by issuing executive orders. They object, for instance, to his order unilaterally easing deportations of some young illegal immigrants, and the prison exchange that won the release of a US soldier held captive for five years by the Taliban. Specifically at issue in the resolution, which was sponsored by Congressman Pete Sessions of Texas with the full backing of House Speaker John Boehner, was Obama’s decision to twice delay requirements in his 2010 healthcare overhaul that businesses over a certain size provide their workers with health insurance. Obama has been forthright about his intentions to circumvent the gridlocked Congress when possible, noting frequently that the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has declined even to hold votes on Senate-passed bills on topics from immigration reform to gay rights. As far back as January, White House aides began referring to the president’s “pen and phone” strategy – using his telephone to convene meetings at the White House and his pen to sign executive orders and changes to federal regulations. Every US president since George Washington has issued executive orders, and Obama has not stood out in the modern era for the number he has signed. In his six years in office Obama has issued 183 executive orders, compared to 291 across George W Bush’s eight years and 381 for Ronald Reagan, according to a study by the American Presidency Project at the University of California-Santa Barbara. But Republicans insist Obama has selectively enforced laws duly passed by Congress, upsetting the balance of powers written into the constitution. “Such a shift in power should alarm members of both political parties because it threatens the very institution of the Congress,” the Republicans wrote in report accompanying the House legislation. |

jerseyboy: Education is the one easily measurable achievement using waec, jamb etc. it is where gimmicks are soon easily exposed. Here with hi spoon imo Oshun state declined badly and with no gimmicks Peter Obi's Anambra went to number one in waec jamb unity school admissions and kings college admissions. My advise. If you are looking for cheap gimmicks avoid education as you would be exposed very quickly and easily.clear point made |
We are vindicated —PDP Ahead of the August 9, governorship poll in Osun, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Integration, Mr Ajibola Bashiru, on Thursday, in Osogbo, defended the withdrawal of the learning tablets otherwise known as “Opon Imo” from students of public high schools. Fielding questions from newsmen at a forum organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State chapter, he asserted that on the purported “arrest of students who refused to submit their Opon Imo by the security agents, is it right for students to steal the learning device? Apparently reacting to the statement issued by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s standard bearer, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who on Wednesday accused the state government of withdrawing the learning tablets to allegedly cover up errors, Bashiru contended that Senator Iyiola Omisore and his spokesman, Diran Odeyemi are “pathological liars”. “They first claimed that we distributed only 200 learning tablets. Now that they are aggrieved, they said we are withdrawing Opon Imo. We distributed Opon Imo to SSS3 students, who were writing WASCE examination. The government did not say Opon Imon is given out for keeps to the students”, he remarked. But, Omisore’s director of media and strategy, Mr Diran Odeyemi, insisted that “with the position of Bashiru, we have been vindicated by the admittance of guilt, dearth of ICT knowledge and lack of coordination on the part of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.” He stated, “apart from retrieving the learning tablets from students without intimating them about such action at the onset of distribution, it is absurd and inhuman to hound underage students with police over such device”. “Their defence is not only weak, but it also lacks substance because they cannot controvert the fact that there are errors in their deceitful Opon Imo. The Commissioner for Information, Sunday Akere, had spoken the truth that they are effecting some modifications on the learning tablets”, Odeyemi submitted. ..........after all the media hype, if this is true then the PDP people would really have scored a huge and made a campaign point on opon imo. Because I really love the idea of students owning their own computer tablets "oppon imo" in Osun state. www.tribune.com.ng/news/top-stories/item/11687-osun-decides-opon-imo-controversy-why-we-used-police-to-retrieve-device-from-students-govt-we-are-vindicated-pdp

The Lagos State Government said on Monday that it had identified no fewer than 59 people who had contacts with the Liberian who died of Ebola Virus in the state, Mr Patrick Sawyer. Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said at a news conference in Ikeja that the contact tracing became imperative to ascertain any possible transmission of the virus by the victim. Idris said the identified contacts comprised 44 hospital and 15 airport contacts, including the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia. He said 20 of the contacts had been screened and that none of them had so far been found to be infected with the virus. He, however, said the contacts did not include those he might have been with on his flight to Nigeria on July 20, as the airline had yet to release the passenger manifest for investigation. He said, “The airline manifest has not been provided by the airline as at the time of this report and therefore, the precise number of passenger contacts is yet to be ascertained, especially as two flights were involved (Monrovia-Lome and Lome-Lagos).” He urged Nigerians not to entertain fears about Sawyer’s case as the state and Federal Governments were doing everything possible to prevent any outbreak in the country. Idris said the deceased’s body had been decontaminated, using 10 per cent sodium hypochlorite and cremated with the permission of the Government of Liberia. He said, “A cremation urn has been prepared for dispatch to the family. The vehicle containing the remains have also been decontaminated while the hospital in which he died on July 25 has been demobilised .” Idris said the state Ministry of Health had designated an isolation ward at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, for case management, adding three other centres were under way. The commissioner urged residents to report people with abnormal cases of bleeding and fever to the appropriate authorities for intervention, as high fever with bleeding from all body openings were symptoms of the disease. Idris also urged residents to always keep their environments clean and maintain good personal hygiene as Ebola virus spreads easily in dirty environments. Also speaking, the Director, National Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Abdul-Salami Nasidi, warned against the consumption of bats and monkeys as these animals had been established to be the original sources of Ebola. He said, “This is time for those bat-eating and monkey-eating communities to be careful now. Ebola started from the eating of chimpanzees. How the virus got to the monkey, nobody knows yet. “But this is the time to be careful about the eating of monkeys and bats. The Ebola threat is high in West Africa and people should start taking precautions.” President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, also warned Nigerians against the unsupervised burial of people who died from suspected Ebola case. He said 40 per cent of cases in high risk countries were transmitted from victims bodies, stressing that an Ebola corpse was deadlier than the patient. Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Mrs Yewande Adeshina, urged traditional healers to collaborate with the government in checking Ebola threats by reporting suspicious cases for the right intervention. www.punchng.com/news/ebola-envoy-58-persons-had-contacts-with-dead-liberian/ |
