sorry for the batch B of 2014 |
Against the backdrop of the presidential pronouncement that all schools in the country should not reopen until October 13, 2014 due to the current measures to contain the Ebola Virus Disease, the directorate of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has indicated that graduates participating in the 2014 Batch B orientation course would spend between one and two days on the course, as against the normal 21-day programme. The NYSC management made this known in an advertorial published in a national daily on Saturday. According to the advertorial, the abridged version of the 2014 Batch B orientation course will run between September 1 and 8, 2014. It added that prospective corps members deployed to the affected states scheduled for the exercise are to report at the designated orientation camps reflected in their call-up letters for registration. The affected states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Lagos, Osun and Yobe. The NYSC stated that “in order to ensure a seamless exercise, prospective corps members are advised to report on the dates indicated in the timetable presented hereunder. “The grouping is in accordance with the geopolitical zones where the corps members come from. “Prospective corps members are to report within the dates indicated against their geopolitical zones for documentation, registration and collection of kit items only. “Thereafter, they are to proceed immediately to their states of deployment or relocation as the case may be for the completion of the remaining formalities.” The NYSC did not however indicate what the said remaining formalities would entail. The abridged course means that the propsective corps members would miss the traditional rigorous activities on the NYSC camp, including the physical training, lectures, endurance trek, camp fire night and others. .. www.tribune.com.ng/news/news-headlines/item/14779-ebola-nysc-reduces-orientation-course-to-one-day-cancels-typical-exercises

Following the declaration of GWOZA town in the troubled northeastern state of Borno as an Islamic Caliphate and the recent takeover of Madagali by the Boko Haram insurgents, the extremists have reportedly beheaded every Christian man available in the areas, while their wives have been forced into Islam and given out in marriage to the sect members. The Director, Social Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, gave this revelation on Thursday, in an electronic statement to Journalists in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. According to the statements, the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram has advanced greatly in their rampage and killings, to the extent of declaring a Caliphate in Gwoza LGA of Borno State, a town bordering Borno and Adamawa states. “As it is well known, the catholic diocese of Maiduguri covers the whole of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa States, the three states under strict emergency rule. Apart from the churches within Maiduguri that have great share of such attacks by the terrorists group, all the churches on the major road linking maiduguri and Adamawa state have been shut down due to activities of the insurgents.” The statement reads. It further stated that, “St Timothy’s Bama has been under siege since last year. The Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Timothy Cosmas had long been relocated to a different Parish. At the early part of this year, St. Peter’s Pulka was badly attacked. Thanks to God that, Fr. James John was luckily unavailable. The terrorists searched and wanted to kill the holy Priest of God. “Lately, precisely on Friday, Augustn 22, 2014, the dreaded group had moved steadily and yet more boldly into Gwoza which is in Borno state and the neighboring Madagali LGA in Adamawa State, declaring a caliphate. “The assisting Priest of St. Denis Madagali, Fr. Aiden Ibrahim fled the Parish with some of his parishioners to the mountains, upon hearing serious fire battle from the terrorists. “Since the curfew declared was dusk to dawn, they had to travel on foot through the mountains until they got to Michika, a neighboring LGA where movement was free. Since then, Madagali and Gwoza have been under siege and strictly controlled by the Boko Haram sects.” Giving the current situation in Madagali, the statement stated: “Madagali is a local government that borders Borno and Adamawa states, the closest town to Gwoza . It has a large number of Catholics, and members of other Christian denominations, and a good number of Muslims. “It is quite clear that terrorism has no friend, but it is abundantly clear that the Christians are worst hit. It might surprise you to know that no one knows the state of affairs in this terrorist zone. “Reports reaching the Director Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Gideon Obasogie in Maiduguri has it that the Whole town and the Parish rectory have been occupied by the terrorists, so many structures and items have been vandalized. “Dozens have been killed and a lot of church structures have been burnt down. Christians in the town are really in a terrible situation; a moment of great persecution. “Christian men were caught and beheaded, the women were forced to become Muslims and were taken as wives to the terrorists. “The houses of Christians that have fled are now occupied by the Haramists . “Their cars are used by the terrorists. Some Boko Haram sympathizers around the town showed the terrorists Christian homes, and Christians hiding were also identified and killed. “Strict Sharia Law has been promulgated, as observed by a woman who luckily escaped from the dead zone. “The situation as it is now has really and truly gone out of control. People are finding it really hard, citizens are being killed in their numbers. “We hope Nigeria would be real in handling the dwindling state of insecurity that has enveloped the entire North east.” ... www.dailypost.ng/2014/08/28/boko-haram-declare-full-sharia-beheads-christian-men-forces-women-marry-gwoza-madagali/ |
Elder statesman and a former Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clark, has warned the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party against granting waiver to a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. Clark, at an ongoing press conference at his residence in Abuja on Thursday, said Ribadu would be used to betray President Goodluck Jonathan at the end. He said the former anti- corruption crusader was known for raising false alarm against governors elected on the platform of the party in the past while serving as the chairman of the EFCC.He said Ribadu was also involved in the impeachment of unnamed governor of the party in the past. He said, even when the President saved him from public disgrace by converting his dismissal to retirement as assistant inspector general of police, Ribadu has refused to show gratitude to the President. He therefore warned the leadership of the party against granting Ribadu any waiver to enable him contest the party’s governorship primary of the party in Adamawa State. beginning to think that Gen Ihejirika (rtd) was more of a military commander than Minimah going by the current BH activities. At least during Ihejirika's there was period we experienced a lull in BH terrorism for weeks and months without a single gunshot from these bastards. |
are these BH people day-dreaming or hallucinating for them to even contemplate this? You declare and yet you the leader are always on the run? Better wise up and lay down your bloody arms and embrace dialogue and PEACE. |
KANO ( AFP) – Boko Haram’s leader said he has created an Islamic caliphate in a northeast Nigeria town seized by the insurgents earlier this month, in a video obtained by AFP on Sunday. “Thanks be to Allah who gave victory to our brethren in (the town of) Gwoza and made it part of the Islamic caliphate,” Abubakar Shekau said in the 52-minute video. He declared that Gwoza, in Borno state, now has “nothing to do with Nigeria”. “By the grace of Allah we will not leave the town. We have come to stay,” said Shekau, who has been designated a global terrorist by the United States and sanctioned by the UN Security Council. The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) earlier this month confirmed reports that Gwoza was under rebel control. Boko Haram is also believed to be in control of other areas near Gwoza in southern Borno, as well as large swathes of territory in northern Borno and at least one town in neighbouring Yobe state. Mapping the precise areas which have fallen into Islamist hands is nearly impossible. There are few humanitarian workers on the ground in the northeast, travel is dangerous and the region, which has been under a state of emergency since May of last year, has poor mobile phone coverage. Experts have described Boko Haram’s gains in recent weeks as unprecedented, saying the group was closer than ever to achieving its goal of carving out a strict Islamic state across northern Nigeria. But many analysts believe the military has the capacity to reverse the insurgents’ advance. Soldiers this week refused to deploy to Gwoza without better weapons in an apparent mutiny. ... www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/boko-haram-leader-proclaims-islamic-caliphate-nigeria/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan leaves Abuja early Friday morning on a “private visit” to Germany, an Aso Rock statement announced on Thursday. “The President will be accompanied on the trip by some of his principal aides. “He is expected back in Abuja early next week”, said the statement issued by presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati. Although the President fully performed an official function in Abuja on Thursday, the tone of the statement raises concerns his state of health. Besides, the terse statement implied that the President would not be accompanied by his wife, Patience, as is usual with many of his foreign trips. The last time Jonathan paid a private visit to Germany was when Patience was hospitalised there for an undisclosed ailment that nearly took her life. The Aso Rock statement was issued shortly after Jonathan received a report of the 2014 National Conference at the National Judicial Institute (NJI). Efforts to get other details of the visit did not yield results as at press time. .... www.dailyindependentnig.com/2014/08/jonathan-private-visit-germany/

culled from Ribadu's facebook page READ MR. RIBADU’S FULL STATEMENT BELOW: My good friends, I know how difficult it may be for you to come to terms with my defection to another party. But I must assure you that it’s a carefully considered decision for which I do not wish to hurt anyone’s feeling. I’ll not embark on a needless animosity with my good friends, irrespective of political, religious, regional and ethnic affiliations. Let me quickly make it known that I did not issue a statement disparaging APC and its members, including Governors Amaechi, Kwankwaso… These were clearly fabricated, expected backlash, by mischievous characters interested in misleading the public and drawing a picture of non-existent feuds between me and my good friends. My defection shouldn’t be seen as an initiation of political antagonism with my good friends in another party. I still hold them in high esteem, and even where there are marked differences, I believe there are decorous and honorable ways of resolving them. So, kindly disregard any statement said to be by me attacking the personality of any politician since my defection. I’ll never allow myself to be drawn into such disrespectful exchange. As for my next step in this political struggle, this would be made known in due time. For now, I wish to assure you that my defection is in pursuit of a good cause, and never out of any selfish interests as portrayed by a section. Thanks for bearing with me on this decision, and for those who have been in solidarity with my struggles and still giving me the benefits of the doubt, I’m most grateful. I’ll never let you down on this new path. Thank you! Nuhu Ribadu .... https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/166977-ribadu-speaks-at-last-why-i-defected.html |

A heavy rainfall late Monday night helped hundreds of residents of Gwoza, Borno State, who had been trapped on the mountains to escape to a safe haven, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. Two of the escapees included the Emir of Gwoza, Muhammed Timta, and a district head in the town, Hakimi Ibrahim. The residents had been trapped on the mountain since Wednesday when Boko Haram insurgents ran over the town, killing scores of people and burning virtually every building including the police station, the local government secretariat, and the emir’s palace. Hundreds of those that escaped managed to climb the rocky mountain that borders Cameroon and Adamawa, with many killed by the insurgents while trying to climb the mountain. The Boko Haram sect has since taken over Gwoza, and foiled at least two attempts by Nigerian soldiers to retake the town. They also surrounded the foot of the mountain to prevent those trapped from escaping. The trapped residents however took advantage of the heavy rainfall on Monday night, which had made their attackers scamper to covered areas. The residents escaped from the mountains to nearby Madagali Local Government in Adamawa State. A family member of one of the escapees, Hajia Amina, told PREMIUM TIMES that the residents, including the Emir of Gwoza, were as at Tuesday morning being moved to a refugee camp in Uba, a border community between Adamawa and Borno. The immediate past Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in Borno (the state executive council was dissolved last week), Asabe Vilita, also confirmed the escape of some of the trapped Gwoza residents to PREMIUM TIMES. The immediate past Emir of Gwoza, Mr. Timta’s father, was in May killed by the Boko Haram sect which has killed over 13,000 people in northern Nigeria since its insurgency. . .. . https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/166567-breaking-heavy-rainfall-helps-trapped-emir-of-gwoza-others-to-escape-from-boko-haram.html |
demand1982: Speaking at the opening session of the Interfaith Summit in Abuja, President Jonathan wondered why any reasonable politician would condemn the deployment of security personnel for elections in the country.whoever wants an honest assessment to this security deployment during elections should ask parents and siblings of those 10 NYSC corps members that were murdered after the 2011 elections for serving Nigeria. |
Speaking at the opening session of the Interfaith Summit in Abuja, President Jonathan wondered why any reasonable politician would condemn the deployment of security personnel for elections in the country. The President expressed surprise that “some political parties are advocating that government should withdraw security during and after election” adding that “what surprises me most is that even some labour leaders are advocating that government should not secure people during election”, wondering “how short human memories are”. The President went back memory lane to recount the ordeal of Nigerians and particularly youth corp members who lost their lives as a result of crisis that erupted from the 2011 general elections. He also recalled the loss of property worth millions of naira in Kano, maintaining that “some of the people have not built back their houses. “We know what happened in Akwa Ibom where some criminals had to sever the genital organ of some men in the name of politics; demons who want to hold political offices. “In that kind of a situation, how will somebody who calls himself labour leader come publicly to say government should not secure people. President Jonathan, insisting that he does not agree with the call, reiterated the clarity of his promise to give Nigerians a free and fair election. “All governorship elections that have been conducted so far; you can agree with me that they have been free and fair”, he said He also debunked claims that he uses his might as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to skew elections in favour of candidates of the party; “PDP have lost elections in Edo State, we lost election in Anambra State, we lost election in Ondo State; of course only two days back we have lost elections in Osun State,” he said. He promised to ensure that Nigerians no longer have the kind of elections that caused crisis in the Western Region and threatened the sovereignty of the country in the 1960s. He called on religious leaders to use their platforms to educate Nigerians on the need to be their brothers’ keepers. The Sultan of Sokoto, Mohhamadu Saad Abubakar, who was one of the distinguished Nigerians from all walks of life, who gathered at the Interfaith Conference, reiterated the unity of Christians and Muslims in one country. According to him, steps must be taken to fight the common enemy, which he said, was poverty. While the Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, pointed at politics as being responsible for the vices that exist in the country, he stated that Nigerians need a turnaround of the negative image and practice responsible politics. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, also described Nigeria as a complex society and added that the conference, which came at a time Nigeria is said to be in dire need of peace more than ever before, was needed to iron out the differences. .... www.channelstv.com/2014/08/11/osun-election-jonathan-defends-deployment-of-security/

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, said its leader, Kayode Obembe, on Friday withdrew his resignation letter, hours after he tendered it. Obembe had on Thursday announced the suspension of the strike action embarked upon by the union following the appeal by the government sequel to the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country. In his letter, he noted that, “There has been a request for clarification about the two postings from the NMA secretariat on the NMA blog. I want to make it categorically clear that I stand by the very letter of the document that I signed – THAT THE STRIKE WAS SUSPENDED. “And since upon my INTEGRITY AND HONOUR, I cannot continue to drive the doctrine that ‘STRIKE CONTINUES’, I hereby tender my letter of resignation as NMA President”. Confirming the latest development, the NMA Friday night wrote on its twitter handle (@nmanigeria): “In the wake of incessant controversial reports flying around on the purported resignation of the NMA President and suspension of #NMAstrike…We wish to state unequivocally that the said letter has since been WITHDRAWN and the substantive President of NMA is still Dr Kayode Obembe.” On reports that the doctors had suspended their strike, based on a letter by Mr. Obembe, the union said “It’s also apt to state that the on-going Industrial Action by Nigerian Doctors has NOT been called off. Not until the FG heeds our demands. “Consultations are still on-going and we shall update you with progress reports. To all concerned Doctors and members of the public, THANK YOU”. ... ... www.dailypost.ng/2014/08/09/doctors-strike-nma-says-president-withdrawn-resignation-letter/ |

Borno state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, yesterday shocked his political aides when he announced the total dissolution of his cabinet for the first since since assuming office in 2011. This came at a time some of Shettima’s political appointees were tendering their resignations amidst the simmering political controversy between himself and his former godfather, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff. Sheriff and Shettima had recently clash over who calls the shot in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in Borno state. According to sources close to the Government House Maiduguri, the sack of the cabinet members, especially the Commissioners was “a welcomed development which was long over due”. The news about the sack had triggered jubilation in Maiduguri as many politicians believe the governor was working with a team that are more of a liability to him than asset. “We believe the next cabinet would be constituted in such a manner that it would right the governor’s act towards a successful 2015 re-election”, said an APC chieftain who spoke off the record. According to the statement issued and signed by the Secretary to the state government, Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, the governor had approved the immediate dissolution with effect from Friday 8th August. The statement reads “The executive Governor of Borno State, Hon. Kashim Shettima, has approved the immediate dissolution of the state executive council comprising all commissioners. . www.leadership.ng/news/380474/borno-gov-shettima-dissolves-cabinet

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, aborted moves by the ousted deputy governor of Adamawa state, Mr. Bala James Ngilari, to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from conducting a bye-election to replace the impeached governor of the state, Admiral . Murtala Nyako. In a ruling yesterday, Justice Ademola Adeniyi rejected Ngilari’s ex-parte application seeking for an interim order to restrain INEC from going ahead with the planned election, pending the determination of a suit challenging his removal from office. Ngilari had through his lawyer Mr. Festus Keyamo, approached the High Court, asking it to declare him governor. He specifically urged the court to among other things, declare that by virtue of Section 191 (c) of the constitution. 191(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), after the impeachment of Nyako (5th Defendant) as Governor of Adamawa State, he ought to have been sworn in as the substantive governor of the state. He prayed the court to hold that by the combined provisions of Section 191(1) and 306 (1), (2) and (5) of the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the swearing-in of the 3rd Defendant (Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru) as Acting Governor of Adamawa State on July 15, 2014, was illegal and unconstitutional. Besides, Ngilari sought for a declaration that by the combined provisions of Section 306 (1), (2) and (5) of the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, he, as Deputy Governor of Adamawa State, he did not resign his office by addressing a letter of resignation dated July 15, 2014 to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, who he joined as the 1st defendant in the matter. However, Justice Adeniyi declined to grant any of his prayers, rather the court directed that he should go back and put INEC on notice by serving it with all the necessary court processes. The court slated next Tuesday to hear the motion on notice. The court okayed prayer by Ngilari to be allowed to serve the defendants via substituted means, to wit, by publishing the processes in Newspapers. Ngilari, whose office was declared vacant on July 15 by the state’s lawmakers following Nyako’s impeachment, in an affidavit he personally deposed before the court, averred that at all times material to the action, “I was the Deputy Governor of Adamawa State until the 15th of July, 2014, when the 1st and 2nd Defendants purportedly declared my office vacant. . www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/adamawa-nyakos-deputy-ngilari-loses-bid-stop-bye-election/ |
The Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro has taken to twitter to mock Lagos state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, for his recent slashing the school fees of # LASU students. According to him, the move could be a pre- political gimmick ahead of the 2015 election. He added that #Fashola should not only apologize to the students whom he has deprived education in the last 3 years, but should also ask God for forgiveness. "Lagos State Government for the rich suddenly realized there are economic hardships." "How does one describe Governor Fashola’s reversal of LASU tuition fees other than a Greek gift to LASUites and their parents? How does my brother Fashola intend to make up for LASUites who were denied access to education in the last 3 years?" "An apology from Fashola to LASUites and their parents is not enough. He should actually seek the face of God for forgiveness!" Do you agree with Obanikoro on this matter?
