What is a business grant? ¤ A sum of money given for a specific project or purpose that a business doesn't need to pay back (unless it breaks the conditions of receiving it). ¤ The main organisations offering grants are the European Union (mainly through the European Commission), the government, Regional Development Agencies in England, the Welsh Development Agency, Scottish Enterprise, Invest Northern Ireland, local authorities and certain charitable organisations. ¤ There are around 6,000 grants available to UK businesses. Each has its own criteria and purpose, depending on the awarding body's aims. The benefits of a business grant ¤ Money. A non-repayable sum of anything from several hundred pounds to hundreds of thousands to help with a specific project of aspect of growth. ¤ You don't have to give up any equity or compromise your plans with shareholders. ¤ Winning a grant gives confidence to investors and banks. ¤ Validation. A large organisation has thoroughly examined your project and ideas and has decided they are sound enough to warrant much-coveted funding. ¤ Certain organisations offering R& grants will do your patent search for you, saving you loads of time and money.¤ Structure to your work. You have to have detailed plans, deliver punctually and report on progress regularly¤ Once you have one grant, it becomes much easier to get another one. You have contacts at a funding organisation and you're familiar with the process. Your relationship with the provider means they'll be more likely to recommend other schemes to you when you ask. The disadvantages of a business grant ¤ Most government grants expect you to come up with some of the money for the project yourself. That percentage will depend on the grant, but 50% is a fairly reasonable rule of thumb. You often only get the money once work is completed (or a segment of work) so you also need enough in the bank to cover costs until then. ¤ The money has to be used for a specific project rather than spread around different parts of your business. ¤ Researching which grant you are eligible for is likely to take a good few working days (although you can ask your local Business Link advisor for free help, or pay a consultant). ¤ The application can take anything from hours to months to complete (ask the provider for an estimate). You can pay for a consultant's help. Application forms are anything from a couple of pages long to hundreds of pages. ¤ It can be very difficult to know how to phrase things and how much to quantify and describe in the application form, although the Resources listed below should help with that. ¤ Competition can be fierce and criteria very exacting. ¤ You often to have to demonstrate a benefit to the wider geographical or business community in your application, whether economical, social, environmental or otherwise. This can be a challenge, although things such as providing employment opportunity through growth often qualify. ¤ Failure to stick to the plans you laid out once you've been awarded a grant can mean it gets revoked and you pay back anything you've been given so far. ¤ You have less flexibility as you have to stick to your original plans. ¤ You have to stick to deadlines. ¤ You don't get the hands-on advice you would from a private investor. ¤ Government grants are also usually only for projects that haven't yet started. www.smarta.com/advice/business-finance/small-business-grants/how-a-grant-could-help-your-business |

Without breaking a single law of reasoning or common sense, it's now obvious that our leaders have taken corruption to another level by pulling wool over our eyes. Stella Oduah, from her brainpower, thought she could play smart by ordering the NCAA DG to do the Needful. What did she mean by 'Needful'. To do the Needful to fulfill her own personal interest at the detriment of the taxpayers money. To cruise the town with 2 armoured cars at the same time. As expectations are high to bring to book all the culprits involved in this shady dealings, the National Assembly and the committee set-up to investigate into the matter should make sure justice and fairness are restored into our judiciary system. When culprits are not brought to book and left unpunished, our government are directly for indirectly teaching the youth immoral acts that corruption is a thing you can do and go scout free without being punished. This will pave way for increase in corruption in our system. The story so far has left us on an ambiguous stance as to whether d alleged corruption is pointing to fact that a whoopful large sum of N225 was spent to acquire the two aure car or process for acquiring them are not duely follow. But the still question remain; why N225 million Is spent on cars amidst several basic and important issues that need to be taken into consideration. The minister said the cars were not meant for her, d NCAA DG exempt himself that he was not In-charge at NCAA when the order was given for the purchase. The PS claiming that he was not available at the time everything happened . The acting DG said he did the due diligence but he had a mindset that they were within the budget limit and thought since the agency had got the approval of the National Assembly there was no need for such diligence. Now that nobody wants to claim responsibility for the cars, Who is Guilty? |
:. Nigeria Mantra has changed gear from My Oga @ d Top 2 Do d Needful Since 2 armoured cars of N225 can be NEEDFULL to Minister in Nigeria amidst ASUU strike, Insurgency in the North, Kidnapping in the South-South, increase numbers of rape victims in the South-West and rise in numbers of money ritual victim in the South-East. Almighty GOD in heaven, provide us with all our NEEDFULL regardless of how magnificent and glorious they are in face of all Haters. |

Of the numerous challenges facing the country and begging for urgent attention, the Federal Government in 2012 chose to focus on a non-pressing matter by awarding a N2.2bn contract for the building of a new banquet hall in the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Muhammed, announced that the Federal Executive Council approved the contract sum during its meeting held on November 28. Wikipedia defines a banquet hall as a room or building for the purpose of hosting a party, reception, or other social events. The hall would be built in addition to an existing hall in the Villa, where national events are held. The proposed 150-capacity hall would have walk ways, security post, hall, conveniences, technical and press briefing rooms “that are more and more enhanced, so that national broadcast can be done from there,” said the minister. Defending the expenditure, Muhammed told State House correspondents that the council awarded the contract because smaller countries had befitting banquet halls in their seats of power. He said, “The second project approved by council is the building of a 150-seater banquet hall in the Presidential Villa. “We noticed that it (existing hall) is inconveniencing; it is not in tandem with what is outside the country. Even smaller countries have better banquet halls near their Presidential residences. “The contract was awarded in the sum of N2.2bn to Julius Berger because they are more familiar with the terrain in the Presidential Villa and for security reasons.” Reacting to the news, the defunct opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria and the Transition Monitoring Group criticised the government for not getting its priorities right. The then National Publicity Secretary, ACN (now All Progressives Congress), Lai Mohammed, had said, “It is interesting that a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is comparing the country with smaller countries when it comes to justifying a project that will only benefit a few elite. Does the minister know that the citizens of the so-called smaller countries enjoy uninterrupted electricity supply?” Similarly, Chairman, TMG, Ibrahim Zikirullahi, had said it was imperative for the government to be more concerned with poverty alleviation and citizen empowerment, rather than be bothered with “trivial matters like the proposed multi-billion naira budget for the completion of the vice-president’s lodge and another presidential banquet hall.” He added, “It is saddening and pathetic to see the way and manner public funds are being wasted under President Jonathan administration. We, therefore, call on President Jonathan to be methodological in his fight against corruption by coming up with strategies that will bring about lasting solutions to the plethora of insecurity, as witnessed in recent times in Nigeria.” The banquet hall contract is one of the numerous jaw-breaking contracts awarded by the FEC for diverse projects almost every week, be they necessary or not. For instance, the information The PUNCH obtained from the website of the Bureau of Public Procurement, as published in the December 31, 2012 edition, showed that the Federal Government awarded contracts worth about N1.187tn between August 10, 2011 and November 28, 2012. The figure represented the total value of over 140 contracts spread across various sectors of the economy. A breakdown of the contracts showed that between August 10 and February 15, the FG awarded contracts worth N700bn; while in the months from May 30 to November 28, it awarded contracts in excess of N400bn. Apparently worried by what many see as a waste of national resources, the Senate had, in February 2012, questioned the legality of such contracts. It described the FEC’s action as a “sheer illegality.” The upper legislative chamber alleged that the council had usurped the powers of the National Council on Public Procurement Act 2007. Faulting the boycott of the NCPP, the Senate President, David Mark, had said, “there is sheer illegality here and the earlier it is corrected, the better for everybody.” Observers have said the problem is not just about the irrational awards of the contracts but the inflation and abuse of contracts, slow pace of implementation and eventual abandonment of some of them. The Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Dr. Bright Okogu, had also expressed concerns about abandoned projects, scarcity of funds and contract abuses by Ministries, Departments and Agencies. He had hinted that new projects might be outlawed in the 2013 budget. However, more multi-billion naira contracts are still being awarded regularly |

By Babajide Komolafe Some people want to invest in shares for a very long time. You can decide to save and invest periodically, quarterly or every six months. It could be for retirement or for a major project like children’s university education or to build your own house. This means a period of more than ten years. What are the shares you should buy? Buy the shares of conglomerates producing and selling essentials. A conglomerate is a company that has many subsidiaries or produces so many things. Most of the time, they produce essential goods that people will always need and consume. Think of Nestle, Unilever, PZ Nigeria Plc, First Bank Holdings etc. Why should you focus on such companies? The possibility that such companies will collapse or fold up is very slim. The rate of failure of such companies is very low. Yes, like other businesses and the economy in general, these companies do have their good and bad times when they would barely make profit either due to decline in sales or rising costs. But fold up, liquidated is not likely at all. Such companies could be acquired, merged with another company but not collapse. For example, during the global financial crises between 2008 and 2010, many businesses collapsed or just closed shop, the biggest being Lehman Brothers. What happened to most conglomerates was declining sales, which made profit to drop. Many of them that should have collapsed were either bailed-out by government and the regulators or were acquired by competitors or new investors. An example in Nigeria is Union Bank, former Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic Bank. Yes, the value of what people invested dropped but over time, they will regain the value. Why is it important that you buy the stock of such companies? You are saving and investing for the long term; the safety of your investment should be your first consideration when you are making this kind of investment. You need to ask, “Which company should I invest in today that would still be in existence and performing in 10 years or 20 years when I am going to need the money? This is important because you must avoid a situation whereby, when you retire and you need the money or when you need it to fund your children’s education, the company has folded up or closed, and you have lost your investment. That is why, while making profit on your investment is desirable, it should not be the number one criteria in this instance. Otherwise, your case may be like that of people that collected their retirement benefits and used them to speculate in unknown companies and investment schemes. So you’ve secured a new role ina new company? Now what? Before you get too comfortable, you should know that your biggest challenge still lies ahead: making the role a success. The firstsix monthsof a new role are critical. This is when you set the expectations for the rest of your tenure and when people will be keen to know what you have to offer. Here are the three things I advise when starting a new job: 1. Asking questions and making change At the start of any new management role it is essential to get the balance right between questions and action. This isn’t easy: too many questions can lead to accusations of not getting anything done, and too much action can be seen as not giving people a chance to impress. The reality is, any new role will involve a lot of learning about the company, the people and the working practices, so asking the right questions is the key. Focus on giving your direct staff the opportunity to demonstrate their credibility and ability in their roles. Then, you should focus on demonstrating that you have linked action to the evidence gathered—this should help to demonstrate that you have struck the right balance between questioning and being decisive. A new manager should not be afraid to make changes early in a role. However, these changes should be based on objective evidence that you’ve gathered. This allows you to justify the needforchange and gives you a better chance of gaining their buy-in. 2. Building relationships Relationships are a key ingredient to getting results from your people, so it is essential that you understand the individual personalities that work with you. This might mean giving a little more (or less) personal information depending on the natural style of the person you are dealing with. Some people want to talk about their personal life, some want to keep things purely about business and getting the job done. Neither situation is right or wrong, but an important skill of any manager is to be able to deal with both situations naturally and in a way that all parties get what they need from the relationship. It is essential that you build solid working relationships across the entire team, but most importantly with the person who exercises the greatest influence. It isn’t always easy to determine who this is at first glance—it takes time and plenty of observation of the relationships within your team to figure out where your energy and influence is best applied. It is also essential that at an early stage you understand how you will be measured by your boss and what success in the role looks like. Delivering to those measures and demonstrating your progress are key ingredients in developing that relationship on a professional level. 3. Be focused Success does come with hard work, but hard work that is focused. As a manager, you must have a vision of where you want to take your team and then have a plan to deliver that vision. This means ensuring that everyone understands what their role is,and what is expected of them. Then, the hard work (and fun) can begin. http://www.kellyocg.com/Knowledge/KellyOCG_Blog/The_first_six_months_-_3_things_to_consider_in_your_new_job/ |

Nigeria Thursday was elected to a non permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. Nigeria attained the feat with a total vote of 186 out of a possible 193 votes. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in a statement signed by Reuben Abati, his Adviser on Media and Publicity, thanked all member countries of the UN that supported Nigeria to attain the feat for the fourth time since independence. “On behalf of the Federal Government and people of Nigeria, President Jonathan wishes to convey his sincere appreciation of the support of all member- countries of the United Nations who voted for Nigeria’s election to the Security Council, the statement said. It went further to say that: “The President believes that today’s endorsement of Nigeria’s candidature for the Security Council seat by the vast majority of member-countries is a glowing expression of support and encouragement for Nigeria’s active participation in the promotion of peace, security and political stability in Africa and other parts of the world. “This is the fourth time since it became independent in 1960 that Nigeria is being elected to the UN Security Council. It is also the second time (2010-2011 and 2014-2015) that Nigeria will be elected to the Council under the Jonathan Presidency. “The President is particularly delighted by this historic victory and assures the global community that Nigeria, under his leadership, will continue to make very significant contributions towards the achievement and sustenance of global peace and security.” http://thewillnigeria.com/news/nigeria-elected-to-non-permanent-seat-at-un-security-council/ |
