The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has said Nigerians need no ’marking scheme’ to assess the Jonathan Administration or any administration at all, noting that the people know when a government has impacted positively on their lives. In a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party also reminded President Jonathan that it is not the business of the opposition to spoon-feed his Administration on how to govern, even though the party has, time and again, gone out of its way to proffer solutions to the myriad of problems facing the nation, out of sheer patriotism. ”Needless to say that such suggestions from us and other well-meaning groups and individuals have been so arrogantly ignored by the administration,” it said. ACN wondered why President Jonathan is suddenly irritated that Nigerians have not given his administration a pass mark, after about three years in the saddle and two years since he was elected. ”Mr. President, Nigerians need no marking scheme to know that the rate of unemployment went up, under your watch, to an unprecedented 23.9% by December 2011, according to figures given by the National Bureau of Statistics. Today, the figure must be hovering above the 50% mark! ”Mr. President, Nigerians need no marking scheme to know that under your watch, security of lives and property, as well as the welfare of the citizens – the raison d’etre of any government – are at the lowest ebb. A day before you demanded a marking scheme from Nigerians instead of giving them better life, a popular musician was attacked by a nine-man gang that snatched his car and deprived him of his money in the country’s economic capital city - the fate being suffered daily by millions of your compatriots! ”Mr. President, what marking scheme does one need to know that despite the seemingly impressive economic figures being reeled out by your administration, the average Nigerian is worse off today than he or she was before you assumed office? What we are seeing is growth without development. The so-called 6.5% economic growth announced by your Finance Minister is meaningful only on paper. How does that help the thousands of university graduates who are scrambling to work as truck drivers? How does it make Lagos-Ibadan expressway or the East-West road safer for Nigerians? ”Mr. President, what has been the impact for Nigerians of the high foreign reserves figure and the stable exchange rates for the naira reeled out by your Finance Minister? Is it not a cruel irony that as Mr. President was luxuriating in phantom economic indices on the second anniversary of his administration, Nigerians across the land could not even watch him on television because the power situation has been exceptionally poor in recent times? ”And in case Mr. President thinks it is only the opposition and the media – his administration’s favourite whipping boys – that are scoring his administration low, the Washington-based global advocacy and campaigning organization, ONE, was listing Nigeria – under President Jonathan’s watch – and DR Congo among ”laggard countries” pulling Africa back from reaching the MDG goals by 2015? Surely, this global body did not use any ’Jonathan- style marking scheme’ to name Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, Ghana and Ethiopia as the top performing countries in Africa (on the MDGs), even when they are less endowed than Nigeria?” ACN queried. The party said it would not have wasted its energy on commenting on the mid-term performance record of the Jonathan Administration, had the President not disingenuously decided to blame imaginary enemies of his administration for his token achievements in the face of mounting challenges facing the country. It urged President Jonathan to shut his ears to praise-singers, especially those of the pig-at- the-trough hue from across the Atlantic who have never seen an African government, no matter its governance record, that is unworthy of their association, as they hunt for cheap funds from despotic governments across the continent to rehabilitate themselves back home. ”Mr. President, it is never too late for you to put your shoulder to the wheel, shun the political jobbers around you, reinvigorate your cabinet by chasing away the deadwood there – though some of them come highly recommended on paper – and giving Nigerians a more purposeful governance. ”When that happens, Mr. President, you will not need to waste valuable time on lecturing your much-sapped compatriots on how to assess your administration, and you would have succeeded in rending those seemingly implacable critics of yours in the media and the opposition jobless,” ACN said. |
KANO—Director of Department of State Services, DSS, in Kano, Mr. Bassey Etang, has said the weapons of mass destruction discovered in a bunker at a Lebanese residence in Kano, Tuesday, belong to international terrorist organisation, Hezbollah. Etang spoke to newsmen in Kano, during a joint conference with the Commandant of the 3 Motorised Division in Kano, Brigadier-General Iliyasu Abba, at the scene of the discovery in Bompai area of the Kano metropolis. He said: “The weapons were brought in by an international terrorist organisation, Hezbollah, to attack Israeli and Western interest in Nigeria. “On May 28, a combined team of the JTF involving the army of the 3 Brigade in Kano and the Kano state DSS conducted a thorough search on this house located at No 3 Gaya Road, off Bompai Road, Kano, belonging to one Abdul Hassan Taher Fadlalla, a Lebanese, who is currently out of the country. “After painstakingly searching the premises, the search team uncovered an underground bunker in the master bed room, where a large quantity of assorted weapons of different types and caliber were recovered. The bunker was specially constructed for this purpose.” Taking stock On his part, the Commandant, Brigadier Abba, said the weapons of mass destruction include 11, 50mm anti-tank weapons, two 122mm artillery gun ammunition, four anti-tank landmines, 21 rocket-propelled grenades, RPG, 16 rocket- propelled grenades charger, one rocket- propelled grenade tube and 76 military grenade. Others are one SMG rifle, nine pistols, 17 AK-47 rifles, 44 magazines, 11,433 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 103 packet of slap TNT. Brigadier Abba further revealed that “investigation also confirms the existence of a Hezbollah Foreign Terrorist Cell in Nigeria. Arrest On May 16, DSS arrested one Mustapha Fawaz the co-owner of the popular Amigo Supermarket and Wonderland Amusement Park, all in Abuja. His arrest and confession unveiled other members of the foreign terrorists network, which led to the interception of one member of the syndicate named Abdullah Tahini, a Lebanese, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with undeclared 60,000 United States Dollars on him en-route Beirut. Thereafter, on May 26 one Talal Roda, also a Lebanese with Nigerian passport, was arrested in this same house. According to the Brigade Commander, all the arrested suspects have confessed to have undergone Hezbollah terrorist training and further implicated one Fauzi Fawad, also a co- owner of Amigo Supermarket and Wonderland Amusement Park. He said: “The fellow is now at large. The arms and ammunition were targeted at facilities of Israel and Western interest in Nigeria. “However, the security agencies are making efforts to unveil the true situation. At the end of investigation, all those involved will be prosecuted.” |
JOSE MOURINHO is Chelsea’s new boss — and that’s official! The Special One sealed a spectacular £40million four-year deal on Tuesday night. A senior Blues source revealed: “It’s official — Jose is a Chelsea man again! Everyone is delighted he’s coming back — the club, the players and the fans. “We are already looking forward to next season — we are sure it’s going to be very exciting.” Jose Mourinho Jose Mourinho finally put pen to paper during a two-day trip to London this week. His cover story was attending the Crystal Palace-Watford play-off final at Wembley on Monday and visiting friends in the capital. But the real purpose of the visit was to seal an emotional return to his beloved Blues along with right-hand man Rui Faria. Now it is expected he will be unveiled next week in a blaze of publicity by the Europa League champions. That is after he has taken charge of Real’s final game at home to Osasuna on Saturday, which will bring to an end his controversial three-year reign at the Bernabeu. About 250 aliens were, yesterday, arrested by a combined security operatives comprising the Military, Police and Department of State Security, DSS, in Lagos, as part of strategy to nip in the bud infiltration of terrorists into the state. The raid, as gathered, was carried out at Gatangowa market at Abulegba, along the Lagos/Abeokuta expressway between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Vanguard gathered that the Lagos State government had charged security agencies in the state to go back to the drawing boards and map out strategies that would check excesses of terrorists as well as beef up their operational might Sources at the DSS told Vanguard that the arrested aliens were discovered to have entered the country without the necessary papers. Sources further informed that although that was not enough to libel them terrorists, it was just a measure put in place to check the influx of likely terrorists into Lagos State. Although DSS sources did not disclosed whether any explosive was recovered from the arrested persons but informed that they would be repatriated to their respective countries, with a stern warning never to return without proper documentation. “ This is a collaborative effort by men of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy , Police and our men. This is just the beginning. It is an ongoing raid and we will not relent until we are satisfied with our intelligence report”,DSS sources said. |

Shekau Releases Audio Dismisses Amnesty, Says It Is FG That Should Seek Amnesty From Boko Haram Leader of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lid Da’awati wal Jihad, Ibrahim Shekau, yesterday released an audio clip in which he dismissed the reported moves by the Federal Government to consider granting amnesty to the sect. In the 30-minute recording, Shekau, who spoke in Hausa, Arabic and English, said it was the government that should be seeking for amnesty of his group, which is also known as Boko Haram, and not the other way round. But he said even though the sect is the one wronged and the one that should be asked for amnesty it, it was not ready to grant any pardon to the government. “We are surprise that today it is the Federal Government saying it will grant us amnesty. Oh God, is it we who will grant you amnesty or you are the one to grant us amnesty? “What have we done? If there is room for forgiveness, we are not going to do it until God give us permission to do it. Have you forgotten your sin, have you forgotten what you have done to us in Plateau the state you called Jos,” he said. Shekau was reacting to the reported setting up of a committee last week by the National Security and Defence Council to consider the possibility of granting amnesty to Boko Haram. The committee is due to present its report to the council next week. Government’s moves came in the wake of widespread calls for amnesty to the sect, coming after Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar urged President Jonathan to consider making a declaration to that effect when he visited Maiduguri last month. source: http://www.naijapundit.com/news/shekau-releases-audio-dismisses-amnesty-says-it-is-fg-that-should-seek-amnesty-from-boko-haram |
