Few weeks before the All Progressive Congress, APC, holds its presidential primaries, below is a cursory look at five politicians that are most likely to emerge as the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition party:

1. Governor Babatunde Fashola:

Arguably, he has the brightest chance among the lot. His greatest undoing would be if a Muslim presidential candidate emerges (which is most likely anyway), but the APC might ignore the warnings from different quarters not to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket and go ahead to draft Fashola into the race because of his popularity across the nation despite the recent denial by one of Buhari spokespersons.

2. Governor Adams Oshiomole:

The comrade governor as he is fondly called, is no doubt a leading candidate to emerge in this race. The former labour leader is well-known across the nation and he is generally seen as a man who is close to the people despite the PR disaster that led to the ‘Go and Die’ scenario. His boldness and oratorical skills cannot also be ignored. His national appeal will be an asset to whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the John Odigie Oyegun led party.

3. Governor Rotimi Amaechi:

Ignore him at your own peril. An emerging political colossus, Amaechi is one politician that has fought so many political battles since he joined active politics and he always comes out victorious. His emergence as the vice-presidential candidate in the APC will no doubt give the PDP top-shots sleepless nights. He is sure to deliver millions of votes for the APC in his home-state just like he did for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 presidential elections.

4. Governor Rochas Okorocha:

Although, he has declared his interest to contest in the APC’s presidential primaries, the Imo governor will at best get the vice-presidential ticket as the APC leadership seem to have zoned the presidential ticket to the north. A rallying figure for the APC in the South-East, Okorocha’s national connections puts him in good stead if the party decides to look the way of the Igbos for the VP ticket

5. Dr. Chris Ngige:

A former governor and currently a serving senator representing Anambra central in the upper chamber of the national assembly, Dr. Ngige has seen it all in Nigeria politics.  His perceived closeness to Tinubu will no doubt give him the edge if the APC leaders decide to zone the ticket  to the South-East. Not to mention his loyalty to the party for close to a decade now. He also has a cult-like following in the South-East especially in his home-sate of Anambra.


6. Dr. Kayode Fayemi:

A shinning light amongst his peers, the 49-year old former governor of Ekiti state is one of the few decent Nigerians  that has graced the Nigeria political scene. Armed with a doctorate in War Studies from the prestigious King’s College, University of London, Fayemi represents the generational change that Nigerians have been yearning for in leadership positions. He stands a bright chance of getting the ticket if the APC zones the ticket to the South-West. And unlike Fashola, he is  a christian.

In 2002, he and a few others of like minds and tendencies formed The Buhari Organisation (TBO) to promote General Muhammadu Buhari’s aspiration to the presidency and he was appointed deputy director-general. He is also the Jakadan Potiskum, a title conferred on him by the Mai Potiskum, Alhaji Umar Ibn Bubaram. In 2013, he was conferred with Ugwumba Ndigbo by the Igbo community in Abuja. He has received the Nupe Kingdom Lifetime Achievement Award for Entrepreneurship.

Sam Nda-Isaiah is a senior member of the International Praise Cathedral and he was a founder of the Praise Business Fellowship. In 1995, he delivered the first keynote address at the launch of the School of Church Growth and Practical Ministry (SOCAP) of the International Praise Cathedral, Kaduna. In 2013, he presented the Review of the Synod Presidential Address delivered by Bishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon at the 19th Synod of the Anglican Communion in Kaduna. He also delivered the Professor Marquis Annual Lecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University in May 2013 and was conferred with the Grand Commander of Great Ife, the highest honour conferred by the Ife Alumni on its members; there are fewer than 20 such recipients in the world today. He is a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN).

you are right! This nepotism became worse during President Obasanjo era. Before then, the Military "beg" people to join its service but since the return of democracy it has moved from bad to worse. President Obasanjo, President Yar Adua and President Jonathan should share the blame on the basis of 30%, 30% and 40% respectively. Reason is it has become worse under this government. Like I said, we need holistic review of our hiring process in all the security agencies and military. Same goes to the State's Civil Service

While it is easy to blame the Government for the dearth of the Military, it will also be wise to look at this holistically.
Joining the Military through the NDA and SSC over ther years have been a thing of Man-know-man and not on the basis of passion, intelligence, ruggedity and patriotism. Most of our Officers were brought into the military on a platter of Gold, while the committed and passionate ones were/are shut out because they don't have "Oga at the top". The resultant effect is a "fine" boy and ajebutter army that are only but a glorified Man O'War, whose militarisation is only deployed to intimidate civilians and prosecute election, but are being ridiculed by a rag-tag group. The same rag tag BH that succumb to the ill equipped but patriotic civilian JTF are the people ambushing and killing our military in their numbers. What a shame!
As a country, we need to go back to the drawing board and review the hiring policy of the Military otherwise, the nation may go into a state of complete comatose(God forbid).
