The United States has urged the Federal Government and its citizens to do everything possible to ensure the safe return of the more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from their school hostel in Chibok, Borno State. The Nigerian Military had on Thursday, stated that it would not be in a hurry to rescue the Chibok girls who were abducted in April 2014. The Acting Director, Defence Information, Military Headquarters, Col. Rabe Abubakar, said that while it was of utmost concern to the military to rescue the girls, the operation required adequate patience and planning. According to the US acting Consul General, Dehab Ghebreab, who spoke at the red-carpet première of the Hollywood crime-drama thriller, ‘Captive’, in Lagos State recently, the US government would stand against individuals and groups, who target people for violence, persecution or discrimination based on their religion. She said, “Nigeria has its share of humanitarian problems with Internally Displaced People due to the vicious atrocities of Boko Haram. In 2014, the United States provided about $11 million for humanitarian assistance to Nigeria and we continue to support Nigeria to crush Boko Haram. On this day (Thursday), the Chibok girls have been missing for 535 days. Everything humanly possible must bedone to ‘Bring Back the Girls’.” She also expressed the US’ commitment to end extreme poverty in Nigeria and other African countries. The consul general noted that the US had the knowledge and technology necessary to end extreme poverty within two decades. “There is progress upon which to build; aggregate poverty rates are now falling for every region of the world, and there are 700 million fewer people living in extreme povertytoday than in 1990. However, even with this progress, 1.2 billion people are still living in extreme poverty and the majority live in Africa,” the US diplomat added. Source : www.punchng.com

Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Ad-hoc committee on screening of nominees for commissioners and special advisers, Hon. Wasiu Eshilokun, has assured that the screening exercise would be thorough and devoid of any witch-hunt. Eshilokun, who is also the Deputy Speaker, gave this assurance at a press conference organised by the committee members to shed more light on why the House opted for a screening committee first before the open screening on the floor of the House. While denying that the House was in the know of the press release from the governor’s office to the effect that the commissioners and special advisers will be sworn-in on October 5, Eshinlokun said there was no rift between the legislature and the executive on the screening of the nominees. According to him, though the screening is a new development, it is within the constitutional powers of the House as stipulated in Section 103(1) of the Nigerian constitution. He said: “It is in furtherance of this that the Lagos State House of Assembly appointed this committee to screen the nominees for the post of commissioners and special advisers, which was sent to it by the governor.” Ehinlokun noted that setting up the screening committee is in the spirit of change mantra of the All Progressives Congress- (APC) government. He however added that any nominee found to have presented fake certificate would be automatically disqualified.

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) has disclosed that investigation into activities of Nigeria’s former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, started back in 2013. The past minister was arrested on October 2 in London over bribery and corruption allegations and was further that day released on bail. Diezani was obligated to return to the Charing Cross police station on Monday for further questioning. On Saturday the Agency provided some more details on the matter. The statement on the NCA website reads: “On Friday 2nd October, the National Crime Agency’s recently formed International Corruption Unit arrested five people across London as part of an investigation into suspected bribery and money laundering offences. “All five people arrested were released on conditional police bail later that evening, pending further investigation both in the UK and overseas. “The investigation commenced in 2013 under the Proceeds of Corruption Unit, and transferred to the NCA earlier this year.” Premium Times has learnt that Diezani’s travelling documents, so as the ones of four other Nigerians arrested alongside, were seized. It should be recalled that hours after the reported arrest the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission raided her Abuja house and sealed the property. Source : www.naij.com |
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said his appearance before the Code of Conduct Tribunal today has further demonstrate his belief in the rule of law and respect for the judiciary of the country. His media office on Monday, September 21, said the country’s number three citizen would attend his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal today (September 22) , In a personal message signed by Saraki and made available to Naij.com, the embattled senate president if he were to be a Senator, nobody will be interested in the asset declaration form he filled over twelve years ago. “Today, I appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the commencement of my trial in a case concerning the asset declaration form I filled in 2003 after I have explored the opportunity to defend myfundamental human rights in other courts. “My appearance in court today once again demonstrates my belief in the rule of law and respect for the judiciary of our country. “As I stated while taking the plea in the case, I reiterate my belief that the only reason while I am going through this trial is because I am Senate President. If I were to be just a Senator, I doubt if anybody will be interested in the asset declaration form I filled over twelve years ago. “This belief stems from the fact that Section 3 (d) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act provides that If there is a breach or non-compliance with any section of the law, the person involved should be given the opportunity to either admit or deny and that in the case of a written admission, no reference to the Tribunal shall be necessary. So, If the CCB had followed the guidelines, procedure or the due process provided in its own law, we won’t behaving this trial. “It is my humble opinion that this case is a vivid example that there is still flagrant disregard for due process in our polity. This trial is not only being observed by Nigerians alone, the international community is watching because Nigeria is a key member of this community. So, the executive, legislature and judiciary should do the right thing that will truly demonstrate that we have imbibed the spirit of positive change. “It is however necessary for me to thank my colleagues in the Senate for the solid support and solidarity they demonstrated for me. I also thank my counsel for the brilliance they have shown in presenting our case and the supporters who were present in the Tribunal in their hundreds. I want to assure you that I am innocent of all the charges and will clear my name in due course,” Saraki wrote. Recall that the CCT ordered the arrest of Saraki yesterday, September 21, for failing to appear at the tribunal court to stand trial for a 13-count charge of corruption levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau following his asset declaration.
