group of young professionals and artisans in Ekiti State, Ekiti Youth Vanguard, has tasked Governor Ayo Fayose to declare his assets in order to demonstrate openness, transparency and accountability. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Charles Fakunle, on Wednesday, the group challenged Fayose to emulate his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, by making a public declaration of his assets within his first month in office. The EYV recalled that Fayemi deposed to the Assets Declaration Form for Public Officers at the registry of the State High Court, Ado-Ekiti, barely a month after assuming power. “Fayemi is the first chief executive of the state to have made public his worth in cash and assets. “It is high time we started holding our leaders accountable in this country that is ridden with corruption. So, if our governor could come out boldly to say ‘these are my assets and when I leave office, I will declare again and you will see that I have lived a straightforward life,’ that would be very encouraging,” the group said. According to Fakunle, “Fayose had accused Fayemi of extravagance, in the light of this, we challenge the governor to make a public declaration of how little or how much he had acquired. Such a move by Fayose would not only reveal the true position of his assets, but also debunk rumors that he has acquired properties in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan and Ado Ekiti. “Declaration of asset at assumption of office and at leaving office is an essential tool for addressing corruption in public office.” Meanwhile, Fayose has appointed Mr. Dipo Anisulowo as Chief of Staff, and Chief Bisi Kolawole as Special Assistant on Environment. A press statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, on Wednesday said the appointments took immediate effect. Meanwhile, the Governor has promised to overhaul facilities and provide the needed manpower at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, to make it a world-class. Fayose, who decried the current state of facilities at the hospital in another statement by Adelusi, said he had been foretold of the problems by members of his Transition Committee before his inauguration. He lamented that the hospital had only one functional ambulance to handle emergency cases. “A situation whereby a teaching hospital has only one functional ambulance is uncalled for. What happens if there are more than one emergency case to handle at the same time? “Also, the X-ray machine there has broken down. Patients have to go to private facilities to have x-ray photographs taken and that is a shame. The wards are also not fixed with fans. “Patients are not treated in a comfortable atmosphere and we are not only going to ensure that the place is provided with the necessary facilities, we are going to provide the workers with the tools they need to work with and motivate them appropriately. “Medical students there have nothing to fear. The Fayose administration, during the first term, started the process of establishing the College of Medicine and it is unfortunate that eight years after, the medical college is yet to be accredited. “All efforts to get the College of Medicine run smoothly will be taken and done. Medical students in the hospital have nothing to fear. Our administration will not let them down.” The governor advised the management of the hospital to also make judicious use of available resources. http://www.punchng.com/politics/declare-your-assets-now-ekiti-group-tells-fayose/ |
The Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr. Campbell Umeh-Nzekwe, has told the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party that it will fail to win Lagos State next year if it relies on President Goodluck Jonathan for support. The APGA boss said if former President Olusegun Obasanjo- who is a Yoruba man- could not help the PDP win Lagos during his tenure, then it would be impossible for Jonathan, who is an Ijaw man, to do so. Umeh-Nzekwe, who was the first organising secretary of the Lagos PDP in 1998, said this during an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday. He said the PDP should forget about winning Lagos. He, however, advised the PDP to support an APGA governorship candidate since APGA was a more formidable threat to the All Progressives Congress. The APGA chairman said the major personalities in the PDP were not good options because they were former allies of former Governor Bola Tinubu, who is an APC leader. He said, “The PDP should stop heating up the political situation in Lagos State because they don’t have the structure; they don’t have the financial capacity to win election in Lagos. As I am talking to you, some of them (aspirants) don’t know their ward chairmen. “They are just gathering to negotiate national cake, not to win election. It has been their system since 1999. The PDP has only won a House of Assembly seat in Lagos since 1999. “Their leader, Bode George, has never won his polling unit before and the PDP is his empire. The current chairman, Tunji Shelle, is not a politician. He was George’s subordinate in the navy. There is no way they can win election. “So, the PDP is just making a noise. Their hope is that Jonathan will help them but if Obasanjo, a son of the soil, could not win Lagos State, it would be naïve to think that Jonathan, an Ijaw man, can win it for them.” http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-cant-win-lagos-for-pdp-apga/ |
By Jaiyeola Andrews in Abuja Diplomacy will be employed to escape FIFA's ban, the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick assured Nigerians yesterday in Abuja. FIFA has given Nigeria until midday Friday, October 31 to put its house in order or risks a lengthy ban that will knock off the Super Eagles from defending the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations next year in Morocco. A Jos high Court judgment had sacked the Pinnick-led NFF board before FIFA issued the fresh ultimatum on Tuesday. While fielding questions from State House correspondents when the Super Falcons presented the African Women Championship trophy to President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa yesterday, Pinnick hinted that his board has appealed to Chris Giwa to withdraw the case from court. "The country is very passionate about football development. So we will do our best in making sure that we do the right thing, we do our best, taking all interests into cognizance to ensure that this does not repeat itself. "It is not every four years we should keep having crisis in the NFF. We’ll perfect the legislations, the NFF Act which also says that we shouldn’t go to court, we should go to CAS if you have cases, and so on and so forth. Those are the things we are setting out to achieve. "Normally, you are not supposed to go to ordinary court for football matters but you can go if you wish because the Nigerian law is supreme. There is no way you will relegate the Nigerian law. But because we have signed on to FIFA you are meant to respect FIFA legislations. "If we had not signed on to FIFA we would say go to hell, but we have signed on to FIFA and CAF. It’s like an association you have signed on to and therefore you need to respect its laws, but not at the detriment of your own law which of course is supreme and that is why you exist. "So, it is a situation that you have to manage tactfully and that is what we are doing; not wanting to say Nigerian laws are not important in this regard, they are. But you should look at the bigger picture. "But then, I believe Giwa will see reasons why he should withdraw the case and concentrate on the one in CAS. If the one in CAS favours him, it’s his luck, but if it doesn’t then he should work with us. That was what I told him yesterday," Pinnick stressed. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/pinnick-nigeria-will-escape-fifa-ban/192636/ |
