hn Shiklam, in Kaduna, writes on the attempt by All Progressives Congress to find a compromise presidential candidate following the zoning of the position to the region Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in the North are trying to get a consensus candidate from among the four major presidential aspirants from the zone. But it appears their effort is not yielding much, as the aspirants and their supporters are not budging on their presidential aspirations. Pressure The four main presidential aspirants from the region are former military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and publisher of Leadership newspaper, Mr Sam Nda-Isaiah. Pressure is being mounted on the aspirants by some prominent northern leaders to reach a consensus with a view to picking one of them and joining forces with him to ensure that the North produces the president of the country in the next general elections. Difficulty However, the move to get a compromise APC candidate in the North appears to be up against a brick wall. Securing buy-in from the main aspirants has proved very difficult. Those advocating for a consensus candidate have expressed fears that the conduct of primaries for the presidency may cause serious divisions in the party and possibly undermined its electoral fortunes during the general elections. The major problem, according to party sources, is with Buhari and Atiku, who are widely believed to be the top contenders for the APC presidential ticket. Many believe that unless the cooperation of both men is secured regarding to whatever system that would be used in selecting the APC presidential candidate, the chances of the party in the elections may be jeopardised. Speculated Withdrawal Speculations were rife that the Kano State governor had stepped down for Buhari. But Kwankwaso has since denied stepping down for anybody, adding that nobody is putting pressure on him to step down. Kwankwaso, in an interview with journalists, said he was in favour of the conduct of primaries, alleging that those who are used to small parties are the ones advocating a consensus candidate because they are used to handpicking anybody as candidate without primary elections. The governor said, “Many people were used to either small parties or let me say medium-sized parties where people sit down and choose somebody in a room. Now we are talking about APC mega party, which is not ANPP, CPC, APGA, or ACN. “It’s a collection of all and we always tell people to look at the example of PDP. From 1999 to 2011, each election, they had to go for primary elections, not arranged election, but real elections. “Even when we had sitting presidents in 2003 and 2011, there were elections, serious elections. And that’s why the PDP has been winning all along and all others who are making arranged elections are losing elections. “As you can see, as fate would have it, now PDP has decided to do their own primary in the Villa and the APC is going to the field. That shows us clearly that APC will win elections and the PDP will lose election in 2015.” Kwankwaso added, “We have always been consistent, but you see many people who are soliciting a president from this consensus, many of them are having in mind that when people go and sit down they will give it to their candidate. That’s consensus to them, that’s the main issue. “I believe that since this party is very strong, all candidates should go round the country and campaign, bring in more hands, more people, and that is exactly what we are doing. In the last few weeks many people joined APC because of me and they will continue to join, especially, if I have a ticket.” The governor expressed the confidence that the party will remain united after the primaries and pledged to support any candidate who got the presidential ticket. Brainstorming Recently, northern APC stakeholders met in Kaduna for an interactive meeting to discuss and resolve the logjam over the presidential candidate and other challenges facing the party ahead of the next general elections. Many of the attendees believed there was need for a consensus candidate. The four main APC presidential aspirants from the North and their supporters were at the meeting, in addition to the governors of Borno, Yobe and Zamfara states as well as APC lawmakers in the National Assembly, state Houses of Assembly, and other prominent party leaders. Convener of the meeting and APC’s National Vice Chairman, North, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, did not mince words about the problems within the party. Shuaibu said APC was facing serious challenges and there was need for stakeholders, particularly in the North, to meet and determine how to resolve the issues. He regretted that since after the election of the national officers of APC, the party had been faced with a number of challenges, ranging from post-congress petitions to serious offensives launched against it by the Peoples Democratic Party government at the centre. Shuaibu noted especially the Adamawa State impeachment saga, which started barely a day after the party’s convention and culminated in the removal of APC’s Murtala Nyako from office, and the attempted impeachment of another APC governor, Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, which followed almost immediately after the Adamawa incident. He also mentioned the impeachment attempts against APC’s Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State. Shuaibu warned against the pitfalls of the past where, according to him, in spite of the guidelines and the constitution, what should have ordinarily passed as a smooth and guided exercise, turned out to be acrimonious, thereby adversely affecting the electoral fortunes of the party and its candidates, He told the stakeholders, “As northern political elite, we have the responsibility to salvage our primary constituency. The APC has given us this golden chance to install the requisite leadership to right the wrongs and we must not blow this rare opportunity. “Posterity will never forgive us should we fail to rise to the occasion, summon the courage and make necessary sacrifices to collectively salvage the North and fix our great country.” Expressing similar concerns, the Bono State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, cautioned northerners against fighting each other over elective offices. Shittima, who spoke on behalf of the APC governors, urged those aspiring for elective positions not to jeopardise the collective interest of the party and the nation. “We must not fight over political offices within the party. We must not allow our aspirations as individuals to jeopardise our collective resolve to salvage the country. We have the number and we are in the position to make or mar the future of the generations yet unborn in this country,” the governor stressed. A chieftain of the party who pleaded for anonymity said the party was trying to handle the situation as amicably as it could to ensure unity among members after the emergence of a presidential candidate. He said, “There is no doubt that the major contenders in the contest are Atiku and General Buhari who enjoy large followership among party members. That is not to say other aspirants have no followership. Therefore, wisdom is required in adopting the method of selecting a flag bearer to avoid any rancour or ill-feelings that could undermine the party. Buhari Versus Atiku Supporters of Buhari believe that his candidature would guarantee vast support for APC in the North-west, North-east and other parts of the country because most people in the North, specially the masses, see him as the defender of the downtrodden. An ardent supporter of Buhari, Alhaji Yahaya Abdullahi, maintained that the former Head of State was one of the few sincere Nigerians with integrity and the only one that has the capacity to defeat PDP in the presidential election. Abdullahi said, “The masses of this country and those who want positive change in this country want Buhari as president in 2015. He is the only person that can tackle corruption and poverty and fix this country. He is a man with impeccable track record and he is the best candidate for the APC.” However, supporters of Atiku say, having served as vice president for eight years, he is the most qualified candidate for the APC ticket. A staunch supporter of the former vice president, Murtala Abubakar, said among all the aspirants, Atiku was the only one whose support base cut across all sections of the country. According to Abubakar, “For me, the person that can easily be acceptable to all sections of Nigeria is Atiku Abubakar. He is a democrat, a detribilised Nigerian who is at home with every section of the country. “He was a vice president for eight years, has the experience of governance in a democratic set up and understands the dynamics of Nigerian politics. He is the best bet for the APC, and we are working hard to see to his emergence as the flag bearer of the party. At this critical moment of the country, Atiku is a kind of equilibrium for the nation.” Many believe APC’s performance at the presidential election next year would depend greatly on its ability to secure the mutual consent of its major aspirants regarding the person that would hold the party’s tickethttp://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/apc-s-northern-zone-at-the-crossroads-over-choice-of-presidential-candidate/192297/ |
State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong By Okon Bassey in Uyo At attempt by aggrieved militants to blow up the major bridge that links Akwa Ibom and Cross River States has been foiled by security operatives in Akwa Ibom State. The bridge links Itu and Odukpani local government areas of Akwa Ibom and Cross River State respectively and is popularly called Calabar-Itu Head Bridge. Three suspects have been arrested and items recovered from them included six super power 90 explosives, five blasting laps, three rolls of detonating cords, one bundle of extra detonating cord, and one Honda Accord 1997 model. Those arrested in connection with the planned bombing of the bridge were Boronyefa Olorogun alias General Bofa from Rivers State; Samuel Coleman Yaw, a Ghanaian resident in Bakassi LGA of Cross River State, and Monday Anthony of Ikang village still in Bakassi LGA. ![]() The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong, who paraded the suspects at the State Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan-abia, said the arrest was made possible through intelligence report received on plans by the aggrieved militants to blow up the bridge. Describing the incident as an attempted terrorist attack, the Police Commissioner revealed that on September 20, the State Police Command received information that a group of aggrieved militants planned to blow up the Calabar/Itu bridge. According to him, upon thorough and intensive surveillance, on October 5, two suspects were arrested after being trailed from Odukpani, Cross River State axis to the Calabar-Itu bridge while the mastermind escaped. Achong explained that for three weeks a combined team of the Army, Police and SSS had maintained surveillance on the bridge until the suspects were arrested when coming to finally plant the explosive. "he mastermind, Boronyefa Olorogun alias General Bofa escaped but after a thorough and rigorous search by combined team of Police and Directorate of State Service (DSS), the suspect was traced and arrested in Yanagoa, Beyelsa state on October 17,” he said. Stressing the need for members of the public to volunteer useful information on crime prevention and detection in the society, the State Police Boss said without the information earlier given to security operative it would have been another thing if the militants had succeeded in blowing up the bridge. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/alleged-terrorist-attempt-to-blow-up-calabar-itu-head-bridge-foiled/192256/ |
Dare-devil pirates operating along the creeks and waterways of the Niger delta over the weekend kidnapped 12 persons including six policemen in separate operations in Embe area of Bayelsa. The pirates, in one of the operations, also made away with a gunboat belonging to the police. Not surprisingly, the attack on the police occurred in broad daylight, at about 1.30pm last Friday. The gunboat was said to be escorting a barge owned by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) when it came under attack. It was gathered that the hoodlums, who operated on a speedboat, laid ambush for the gunboat and opened fire on the policemen. They were said to have overpowered the policemen and later took control of the gunboat along Santa Barbara and Nembe waterways, causing panic among travellers. All efforts to confirm the incident from the police proved abortive as the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said he was in Abuja for a programme. Also, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Valentine Ntomchukwu, sent a message claiming to be in a meeting.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/pirates-kidnap-6-policemen-steal-gunboat-in-bayelsa-/192205/ |

For a while now, former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has kept mum despite abuses heaped on him by his former party members over his defection to the PDP earlier in the month. Not until recently did the governor speak on this matter. Despite accusations that the former governor’s act was a show of betrayal to the late Biafran warlord, Odumegwu Ojukwu, Obi maintains that he remains loyal to his late mentor. It would be recalled that the governor shared a strong bond with the deceased. In fact, the father and son relationship that existed between them was enviable. Obi pledged an unwavering support to his late leader who intervened on many issues that affected the party. His authority was not questioned as he was almost seen as the successor to late Ojukwu. To say his abrupt defection was shocking is an understatement. All manner of reports were released to drag his name into the hall of shame, but somehow the politician did not lose sleep over it. Of all, the wife of the late warlord, Bianca Ojukwu is most pained by his decision. She described Obi as the proverbial Peter of the party. She was so pained that she allegedly cut all ties with him. However, the ex- governor doused any hope of returning to his former party when he recently exposed the alleged rot in the party. He accused APGA of violating the principles of their late leader with impunity, thus he cannot belong to a party “where self- interests matter most.” He decamped to PDP because he couldn’t stomach “the impropriety of the party members.” Obi reiterated that his loyalty was to Ojukwu and not to the party. He predicted that it won’t be long before the party’s can of worms was prised open. He claimed that he would never stop propagating the principles of his mentor and that his former party members should consider his move similar to that of his late mentor who refused to ally with any party that spells mediocrity during his lifetime.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/peter-obi-still-loyal-to-late-ojukwu/192157/ |
“I must tell you today that I apologise to PDP and the entire Imo people for bringing in the man I did not know too well to govern the state. Today you can see that he had failed Imo people”, -Agbaso ![]() |
Former leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Imo State, Chief Martin Agbaso has formerly returned to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with a vow to deploy all within his reach to ensure victory for President Goodluck Jonathan who he described as having performed so well for the country. Agbaso who was the winner of the 2007 annulled governorship election in the state, however declared formally, his intention to run for the governorship of the state under the umbrella of the PDP in 2015. At the official ceremony marking his return to the party at the crowded PDP State Secretariat along Okigwe road, Owerri yesterday, Agbaso expressed gratitude to the leadership of the party at the national and state levels for moving the party to greater height through the many transformational projects embarked upon by the various PDP led states and at the national level. He noted that it was through the party that he could realise his ambition, stressing that the role he played in 2011 governorship election by championing the victory of the incumbent Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha was indeed very regrettable. “I must tell you today that I apologise to PDP and the entire Imo people for bringing in the man I did not know too well to govern the state. Today you can see that he had failed Imo people”, he said. Agbaso who was a foundation member of the PDP stated that he remained humbled by the reception accorded him by all major stakeholders of the party and promised to live up to their expectations through deploying his weight to bring victory to the party in 2015 in the state. While declaring to run for the governorship of the state, he expressed dismay over what he described as leadership ineptitude in the state and promised to liberate the state by attracting over 120 manufacturing small and medium scale industries that would give jobs to thousands of Imo youths, alleviate the sufferings Imo people, provision of adequate security and creation of agricultural settlements across the state. According to him, I owe a lot of gratitude to the masses for believing in me and I promise that I will continue to play that role as you have ascribed me. Welcoming him back to the party, the National Vice Chairman (South East) Col Austin Akobundu (rtd) described Agbaso as a political iroko that could not be left behind, as he said that his happiness knew no bounds for the return of Agbaso. Akobundu disclosed that Agbaso had been given all the necessary waiver, rights and privileges to repossess all he left behind. “You are coming back to repossess you possession. You have not missed anything. We still keep you seat vacant and today we are happy to welcome you and give you back your position. “It is noteworthy that the National Working Committee (NWC) of our party has graciously granted your request for waiver and you are free to aspire to any position you want in the party”, he said. In his remarks, the State chairman of PDP, Mr. Nnamdi Anyaehie said that the return of Agbaso to PDP ended the long search for prominent persons in the state to join, adding that he could then go to sleep since the party had not left anybody behind. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu described Agbaso’s come back as a good thing to happen to the state PDP and promised victory for the party in 2015.www.thisdaylive.com/articles/2015-agbaso-returns-to-pdp-declares-for-imo-governorship/192171/ |

Justice Gabriel Kolawole of a federal high court sitting in Abuja on Friday ordered that the trial of Senator Mohammed Aliyu Ndume, who is standing trial for terrorism related charges, would no longer be conducted in public. The trial was temporarily halted last Tuesday following an application moved by the Department of State Security Services, DSS, where it sought amongst others, the non disclosure of the identities of its witnesses. The prosecution had urged the court to exclude persons other than the accused and his team of lawyers as well as accredited journalists from the proceedings in view of the nature of the charges and the need to protect witnesses who are security operatives as well other individuals.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/court-grants-prosecutions-request-to-shut-out-public-from-ndumes-trial/192134/ |
Former deputy National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (South), Senator Annie Okonkwo has rejoined his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Okonkwo in statement made available to THISDAY after he was given waiver by the PDP to run for Senate, said he left APC because the platform did not observe internal democracy. Okonkwo who represented Anambra Central senatorial under PDP between 2007 and 2011 after taking his seat in the Senate, was appointed to committees on Upstream Petroleum Resources, Police Affairs, Environment (vice- chairman) and Agriculture. According to him, “I am now a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, the platform where I was elected to represent the people of Anambra Central senatorial district in 2007 and I am also contesting the senatorial election on the platform.” Indigenes of Dunukofia, Anaocha and Awka North Local Government Areas all in Anambra Central senatorial district, had unanimously endorsed the reelection bid of Okonkwo to represent the zone in the Senate. A stakeholder of the party in the district, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the council, Mr. Okechukwu Ekemezie, who said they decided to adopt Okonkwo because he distinguished himself among others vying for the position in the zone even before his election into the Senate in 2007. And because of Okonkwho’s achievement while in the Senate, Ekemezie said the 19 wards chairmen in Anaocha Local Government Area, Adazi-Ani I, Adazi- Ani II, Adazi-Enu I, Adazi-Enu II, Adazi-Nnukwu I, Adazi-Nnukwu II, Agulu I, Agulu II, Agulu III, Agulu IV, Aguluzigbo I, Akwaeze I, Ichida I, Ichida II, Neni I, Neni II, Nri I, Nri II, Obeledu I and others stakeholders reached an agreement of adopting Okonkwo as the candidate of the party.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/okonkwo-rejoins-pdp/192166/ |
