Lack of exposure is the cause! Education is therefore the key here. Majority of our people don't know anything about websites let alone what a good website should be. Given the level of unemployment, youngsters take a two weeks crash course on FrontPage and dash out to town looking for website jobs. When the designer have no idea and does not take time to research and learn, he is bound to come up short all the time. The business owner is even less informed. Issues of content, usability, target audience, accessibility and interactivity are Latin or Greek to both. Another issue is that of attitude of both the designers and the business owners. The business owners do not take time to prepare or do any kind of research about putting their business on the Internet. They just want to have a website. You get calls like "In need a website how much will it cost?" or "Give us a proposal on n-page website". Then you have the boss who just contract and build a business website without consulting any of his/her employees. The designers sometimes are extremes- too needy or too greedy. The needy ones accept website project without analyzing the project in terms of fixed cost. You may see one accepting a website job for 7,000.00 Naira including domain name registration, design and development and hosting. The greedy ones charge plenty Naira and put up a FrontPage website with broken links. Both may abandon the project and run. The end result is the mom and pop websites that populate the webspace for Nigeria. Interactivity = animated gif floating left, right and center all over the web page. There is hope though we are improving everyday! Devine R. |

You guys are not kidding! You are expecting too much from Nigeria. The internet is too new in Nigeria and people are yet to understand the value. Most people are putting up websites just because their friend or competitor has one without clearly articulating the purpose or function of the website. Nigeria, a country where some businesses spend over 1 million Naira to decorate their offices and expect to pay 25,000.00 for a website, if they actually need one! Talk about lack of understanding! It will take a paradigm shift before we come up to the class of CNN, BBC and others. What about the hidden agenda of the person in charge of the website? Devine R. |
Web designers using Microsoft(MS) FrontPage will have to sing a different tune in the new future since MS depricated FrontPage in 2006. What happened to FrontPage? After nine years of being an award-winning Web authoring tool, FrontPage will be discontinued in late 2006. We will continue to serve the diverse needs of our existing FrontPage customers with the introduction of these three brand-new application building and Web authoring tools using the latest technologies, Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Designer 2007 for the enterprise information workers, Microsoft® Expression™ Web for the professional Web designer and Microsoft® Visual Studio 2005 for the Web developer. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/frontpage/HA101205221033.aspx Devine R. |
What is Phishing and Pharming? Phishing attacks use both social engineering and technical subterfuge to steal consumers' personal identity data and financial account credentials. Social-engineering schemes use 'spoofed' e-mails to lead consumers to counterfeit websites designed to trick recipients into divulging financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames, passwords and social security numbers. Hijacking brand names of banks, e-retailers and credit card companies, phishers often convince recipients to respond. Technical subterfuge schemes plant crimeware onto PCs to steal credentials directly, often using Trojan keylogger spyware. Pharming crimeware misdirects users to fraudulent sites or proxy servers, typically through DNS hijacking or poisoning. - Source:http://www.antiphishing.org/ With regards to phishing on the Internet any organization can be spoofed - Banks, Ebay, Pay Pal, Amazon.com , you name it. Yes even Bank of America. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing or http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/p/phishing.html for more information. Why are intelligent people engaging in illegal activity instead of channeling their creativity into thing that will benefit them and others. I have been on this job for less than a day and I have already found 3 fake banks. Modus: 1) They register a domain name .com, .net, .org, .biz or .info. 2) On the home page post nothing or simple "Site under Construction" 3) Create a sub domain and copy a bank website and post is there. Now send millions of email to people all over the world telling them that their bank account has been compromise and needs revalidation. http://nabisng.com/ and http://swiftfh.org/uk/home/ Signonafrica will start handing over these criminals to the EFCC in Nigeria.
